Small fun story time. As a transformers loving kid I found the original astromegazord toy and just assumed it must be like some Japan based character like Star Saber. Thus began the legend of Astro SpaceKnight. A Galaxy defending chad of space and time who fought brave battles on the kitchen counter and the evil frogs in the garden. My absolute favorite toy as a child. This is absolutely a masterpiece Astro SpaceKnight back from my childhood to once again defend us from whatever evil dare step up.
I had many of the original Megazords and I certainly enjoyed this one. I I remember correctly, the original could hide its hands with sliding feature. The figure could merge with the Delta Megazord to make even a bigger Megazord. A really nice toy. Still one of my favorites. I even enjoyed the Jumbo Astro Megazord. Yes it was a "disassemble and reassemble transformation," but is was a great design.
Absolutely respect the willingness to buy a figure based on it just hitting that “it’s cool” spot. Even if it doesn’t get me into the shows, it still opens up a whole new fandom of toys that could speak to me, and that is never bad. Great review as always….the child! Great seeing Repugnus get to be an evil little gremlin.
You could sneak this guy onto the Ultra Magnus shelf and nobody would even notice. Well I mean, we would, because we're a bunch of hopeless turbo-dorks, but normal people wouldn't.
The reason there's a big red 'M' on the chest, and another that looks like an envelope on the shield is that the orginal Japanese series (that the suit and robot footage was taken from) was called Denji Sentai Megaranger (Electronics Task Force Megaranger). It was the second Super Sentai series to feature a core team that was all high school students. (The six ranger was a guy in his 20s who worked on the suits, used a prototype suit, and was awol from his job on the moon because he wanted to slack off and occasionally cook) Their individual suits had motifs based on then high tech items, like wireless phones and the internet. I think that the villains were digitised, and may have been like Lord Dread from Captain Power was trying to digitise the world. Even if you"re not interested in watching any iteration of these series, it is entertaining to see the differences between the originals and the Power Rangers versions.
I'm rewatching this because I finally have this Rocket Man in my collection. I couldn't help but notice you call everyone at the beginning "Mega Dorks". This could potentially be a reference to the original Japanese sentai series, "Megaranger", where Power Rangers in Space gets its footage. I adored in space and have been waiting with bated breath to find a good deal on the guy since i never got the original. This video just sealed it for me that this is needed on my already cramped shelves ♥
I'm genuinely so jealous of this video. Finding this guy has been a struggle. At this stage, my best bet is to order one overseas and pay for postage that's higher than the price of the toy itself. But watching this review is almost like owning the toy myself! Almost! ...not really, but still a good video!
"I cannot imagine anyone likes having a big bag of hands somewhere in their house, it's creepy!" *Laughs in Yoshikage Kira* But yeah, I kinda feel like that about tokusatsu stuff in general, too: checking out a clip or two every once in a while is neat, but it's rare I actually bother checking out full episodes, let alone watching an entire series. That said, I recall enjoying a few Kamen Riders shows, like Agito, Kuuga or Amazons. Garou has some fancy looking costumes too.
I’ve always found that the Megazords that are formed from one thing (Dragon, White Tiger, Astro, etc…) are better looking than their gestalt counterparts. (I am in no way hating on the other Megazords. I just like these more.)
I wish I had the money for this thing, coz It does look amazingly huge. I'm still happy with my old one, but this thing IS impressive! And it only clicked with me now that it's a Headmaster. Anyway, after the Red Dragon Thunderzord, this is probably my favorite non-combining Megazord. Coz SPACESHIP! And as the expanded universe shows, the best spaceship in the franchise. The top standard!
Not sure if they released the Delta Megazord in this line yet. If they did you might want to get it. It combines with the Astro Megazord and it's pretty great.
I don't think so. Considering the QC issues the ZAP Astro Megazord had (which, oddly, Gavin here didn't mention... or come across, hmmm), Hasbro may have backed-off to address those. I also know the Astro Megazord is one of the bigger Megazords at 1/60 scale (according to canon), so integrating the Delta Megazord- and then tacking-on the weight of the combined Astro-Delta Megazord- may have caused additional delays. They may still be chewing on it now, but that said I doubt this will go the way of Bandai America's Legacy Shogun Megazord... which was strongly hinted at but ultimately never released.
I had the original deluxe Astro Megazord as a kid, despite not being a PR fan at all. Beautiful thing. The accessories were short on detail, but it was a big blue robot with chromed bits all over and a space shuttle hat and buttons on its chest to make lights and sounds and when you connected the head it went WORRR-CHEYEWWWWW
I hope your copy won’t have QC issues where the clips snap or the ratchets break. I ordered mine during Hasbro’s Black Friday sale and heard nothing but QC issues, but for $100 I guess I can risk it.
That is exactly my stance on power rangers. A touch too old to watch it back then, but it didn't stop me. I'd eyeball the toys in the store but I told myself I value articulation too much to get into those bricks. Still love the look of them.

As is the lack of storage for the sword, for better or worse. Usually when a Megazord had a sword, it wasn't kept anywhere on the mech's body, they just summoned it from the sky to deliver the finishing blow.
I’d forgotten just how cool non Transformers robots can be. I had this big blue thing who’d yell “ENEMY DETECTED, ATTACK!” and riddle the poor guy with way more fire than he deserved.
Its like how I have one big power rangers guy. For me it is the clawzord, from samurai. Definitely the most ostentatious thing on The Lobster Shelf. Id love to display it in the lobster mode but it is so big and ridiculous I just do not have the space.
Me: I'm getting G12 Formation because it's incredible but this is the ONLY Sentai thing I want, NO MORE. Me, ten ultrazords later: You know I really should save up for the limited edition BLACK Ultimate Daibouken...
I wouldn't bet on that "ONLY ONE". the serie had 2 more bots. one is ugly and dumb and it's worth to be forgotten, while the other is basically the companion piece of this. a slick heavy-weapon spaceship that transforms into a fat chested bot which combines with minimal take-apart into a massive bot with massive firepower, that with updated tech will still be able to move and since is not the main bot, it will likely hit the discount sale price fast. just those two tho. there are a bunch of cool robots in the 45/20 years of the mythos, but none is really worthy or transformers-y enough (or won't be made because, holy crap, some of those would be titan scale and non-transformers fan don't have that kind of buying power), so only this and his companion one
I can go on and on about the history of Tokusatsu, Power Ranger's original source material is Super Sentai! A Japanese series and there are so many more concepts that have been done over there in Live Action like guys bonding with aliens to grow gigantic (Ultraman) or Cyborg Karate Bugmen riding motorcycles to fight the neo nazi organization who made them and several other abominations like Spider Man.

Kinda, if the head had a vehicle mode instead of a robot mode. This was the first primary Megazord they had that was more clearly inspired by the Transformers/Machine Robo style of transforming robot than the more prevalent Voltron-styled ones made out of a squad of combining mechs. The partsforming is also show-accurate, as the shuttlle was made on Earth while the larger spaceship was made on an alien planet, and the two put together unlocked the Megazord mode.
Too far, or not far enough? THE WORLD MAY NEVER KN... nah, it's definitely too far. I got the original White Tiger Zord for the same reason, and it lead me to getting the original MMPR Megazord, but the all black and gold version. And now I have the reissued one. Get out while you still can.
I hope you keep your promise and not buy another Power Rangers thing. I dunno if I could recommend you Power Rangers as something you might like, with how often it tries to take itself seriously using footage from Super Sentai shows that know they're made for children and have fun with the silliness on hand. If you enjoy something like Doctor Who, you might prefer Kamen Rider or Ultraman more, in the sense that they can sometime be as scary as they are silly. (Or avoid those if you don't want to buy any more toys. They're very toyetic!)

It is a great zord that one. Real classic mecha vibes. Hits me in the same place X-Bomber does from Starfleet.
