  • 🥳💡 KICKING OFF THE BATTLE OF THE T5 GROW LIGHTS!!! How will TWO 54watt Fluorescent Grow Lights compare against THREE 20watt LED Shop Lights for growing Kale Microgreens?!
    ➡️For this experiment, we tried to keep the PAR (light intensity) as close as possible to make this a solid test!! 🤓 This video is one of many in our series on Microgreen Lighting - and will hopefully help you with making a choice on which lights work best for growing the crops you need them too! Below we have the lights and sprayer we used for watering linked
    Hope y'all enjoy the video!👩‍🌾👨‍

    Great work as always. I'm new, so perhaps I simply don't understand, but I was curious as to why your comparison used three T5 LEDs against two T5 fluorescents. I'm assuming these are each 48" lights. Just wondered why the two fluo were centered over the crop versus the three LEDs spaced evenly across the shelf. Thanks very much.

      We run our lights on a 17hours ON and 7 hours OFF schedule and have had great success with that over the past year and a half! We suggest using Three 20watt T5 LED’s per shelf. Great side by side testing! I got confused about some of the stats. I am most concerned about heat output because my grow room is naturally warm due to the furnace that’s in the same room. Which light runs hottest?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Fluorescent is definitely the one that runs hotter. The LEDs aren't bad at all on temperature.

    Awesome experiment! Question! What's the temperature in your grow room? I'm curious, since you mentioned how fast these kales germinated. I've been struggling with germination time so I'm trying to figure out a way to reach that 3 day sweet spot.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      🙂Hello theHyper Painter ! Our space stays between 75-80F degrees in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 67-73F in Winter and our humidity around 50% or under. We also have one large fan that circulates the majority of the air and small computer fans on each shelf of each rack. All fans are running for 24 hours of the day. We do not pump carbon-dioxide in the space and the space only exchanges air when we open the door a few times throughout the day.

    • @ArmageddonAfterparty
      @ArmageddonAfterparty ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@OnTheGrow 23.8 °C to 26.6°C in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 19.4 °C to 22.7 °C in Winter. For all those slightly irritated by this Fahrenheit nonsense. Like me.

      A seedling heat mat is a game changer. The soil will always stay 15ish degrees cooler than the air temp because of the moisture in the soil. Water is a naturally cooing. A seedling heat mat heats to 15 degrees warmer than the air temp to worm the soil. An inexpensive tool that last for many years.

    I have been researching what lights to go with so this is very timely and thank your for all the videos! One thing I noticed was the Sunblasters are rated for 10,000 hours and can not find anything from Barrina that lists the hours except for an Amazon Q&A where someone states they are 50,000. Can you confirm this? This is an important factor to consider as it puts the lifetime of the Sunblasters at a 1.14 years vs. 5.7 years for the Barrina's - @On The Grow would you have a good lifetime number for the Barrina's and would you agree with the lifetime consideration?

    I grow bedding plants for my outdoor vegetable garden, was using T-12 fluorescent shop lights 6500K. Purchased some full spectrum white LED grow lights, a basic light meter shows the LED light is brighter but the plants don't seem to grow as well and a total loss this year as compared to past years.. I'm not sold on LED grow lights, paid $80/4 4ft lamps, after 2 months still have small seedlings, not RTU bedding plants.

      A little late. You do not want plants under the lights to long if you are transplanting outside. when grown inside the plants get very weak and will need stakes if it goes out side and maybe even tying branches.
      Keep them short inside they grow fast as soon as you get into the sun.

      Just use 2ft LEDs! Anything around 18 watts, use three per shelf. If you can get around 24-36watt you only need two per level. Aim to get them in the 5000k-6500k in temperature will work great!

    Also I'm unnecessarily bothered that you couldn't average 295 and 305 without a calculator.

  • @jamescampbell1060
    @jamescampbell1060 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video, but some slight scientific vocabulary correction. PAR has no units of Intensity but refers only to Photosynthetic Active Radiation [400 to 700nm] PBAR is Photosynthetic Biologically Active Radiation. You are thinking Photonsynthic Photon Flux Density [the umols per second the light source emits sort of similar to Lumens in a sense] or PPFD which is the density of the PPF at any measured point. PPFD is the number displaying on your PAR meter and not PAR
    Also your FL T5s were not Full Spectrum but 6400k often called daylight bulbs but are actually bluer than cool whites. Your LED T5s were 5500k also bluish but warmer or redder than your 6400k bulbs. Bluish light is probably excellent for sprouting since blue limits stretching.
    Your decision to equivocate the light by average PPFD was a good way to make the comparison more equivalent. Seems that your LEDs had a PPFD average of 75 compared to 65-70 ish for the T5 so the LED were more uniform in coverage and slightly brighter for a lot less of an operating cost.

      If it’s kept away from light and excessive heat and it’s kept in an enclosed bottle, it can last a few weeks, possibly a month or more... I use diluted peroxide often, in a spray bottle and I’ve had cuts in my hand and used it after not adding any solution again after it sat in the bottle in a dark cupboard and it did its thing on my cuts. I know for a fact, light will weaken it... but I’m only guessing about the heat.

    If you wanna be "average" go with the led. Oompf costs $$. If you want to stand out above the rest you gotta pony up. Would like to see the test with the reflectors on the Fluorescents. Sun blaster is not the most affordable or best option for Fluorescents. Great Test!!

      Do you have some other Fluorescents you could recommend from Amazon? Makes it easier for me to share with everyone if it is from a big source like that. I haven't looked into fluorescent lighting in so long :)
