- River I and stumbled upon this #chukar land while exploring North Central Oregon. We were excited, as the forecast was for snow...outta bed early and on the road trying to beat the rest of you to the field....we were disappointed at first by the sheet of ice covering the land. It warmed up , the fog rolled in and my #SmallMunsterlander Pointer found the birds! #uplandbirdhunting

Nice work! Sometime I’m going to try chukar hunting.
Great video!
Than you sir! Happy New Year!
oh you absolutely should
Well that's an odd felling. I've hunted that ground for a long time, you stumbled on a great piece of property!
You saying you've hunted this exact piece of property? I've driven past it many times on my way to a public piece I really like, often there are hunters on scene. This time I again drove past it, on my way elsewhere...but the spot I wanted to hunt (for pheasant) was waay too wet (lots of new beaver damns).
Great hunt! Great work by River.
Awesome video. well done.
Thanks! We had a good time, Pew Pew…
Great video, looks like some nice chukar country!
Yeah I was happy to find it full of birds! Normally I look in rockier areas but I'm wondering now if that has been a mistake on my part.
Doesn't get any better than Oregon gorge.
Nice work great video there’s nothing better than the Oregon high plains
Happy new year 🎊
It really doesn't get any better!
@@Betterdayswest wait….i thought you said waterfowl was better! 🤣
HAHAHA they are but Im starting to like upland more and more. @@SaltWaterSalmon
I love chukar hunting!
Me too bro!😎
Its because its the second only to waterfowl hahaha
@@Betterdayswest pretty tough to beat when the birds come to you! 😃
Hey my River is tearing it up. Got perfect score in Navhda NA test.
Yo, That’s awesome!😎 well done River!!!
Nice video. Happy new year buddy!
Happy New Year Thomasito!
Great video
Thank you Sir!
Cool video. I'm hunting N. NV. I just picked up a Benelli Ethos. I don't think it has the high shooting issue.
Good Luck in Nevada! I've heard you folks have good bird numbers out there! Yeah, those Ethos get great reviews!
Dope you get out and shoot much yet?
Nice video man.
Glad you enjoyed it. This was my first chukar limit in Oregon or Washington. I've run into several , just worked out good this day.
What ammo do you use? I heard you say 4 and 6 shot is it steel or lead?
Hi! I’m using steel. I grew up using lead but the movement away from it is all but complete. I know there are places we can still use lead but I don’t want it in my bag because I hunt places I can’t use it and don’t want a ticket for having it. Full disclosure though…I still have some but try not to buy more…
Working my way through a couple cases of Browning Wicked Wing XD #4’s in 3” carrying 1.25 oz of shot. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the fast response. I live west of you in Oregon and just got into upland hunting. I can’t find any steel shot that’s not duck loads so I gotta order some.
@@orBMW yes, I had to do the same! I bought mine from Gunbrokers.com
Love the question
Great hunt! Does River point?
The short answer is yes. BUT….due to my poor training skills, she seldom does and when she does she is not inclined to wait for me to arrive in a timely manner 🤦🏻♂️🤣😭. I really have to keep her close, otherwise the birds flush out of range…
It’s totally my fault!
@@SaltWaterSalmon I have 2 SMs. My older female is very steady on point. My younger male required more work - he wants to push in quickly but a little electricity corrects him. I have a few of my videos loaded - I also put a GoPro on one of the dogs.
@@zackmay925 Yeah River gets toned a lot. No need for electricity these days unless we see a snake/porcupine or too close to the road... She'll be 10 y/o in a little over a month!
let me know when you want to have a buddy to hunt with I'm in the area.
Man I want to go now but this weather…these roads, these crazy drivers! 😵💫
I meant to say “SM” . I have 1 LM now.
Nice, I’ve never seen a LM in person…
I have had 2LM‘s in the past and have hunted chukars in Hell’s canyon. Why no expectations for your dog to point? I will say, however, if you do not expect her to point, she does work nice and close as a flushing dog for you.
Well I did a pretty poor job with training. Trained her myself, read books about it but in the end I kept shooting birds she bumped…in the end she became a flusher! We do just fine but on these chukar hunts it would be nice to let her go and for her to hold point 10 minutes +/- while I get to her… Not complaining or wishing for something different, just noticing my shortcomings as a 1st time trainer!
Great video! We seem to have a lot in common. I have a 3 year old SM, live in Alaska, former commercial fisherman, and love to bird hunt. Where did you get River from?
Hey! Did we perhaps meet in Sportsman’s Warehouse in Vancouver WA? I met a pilot (cub jockey) there who had a young SM! Anyway, we found River through Herz Gun Dogs in Powell Butte Oregon. Sadly Melissa Herz passed away several years ago 👎🏼
what choke?
I use my modified for upland….
inertia or gas?
which one a best?
@@user-hr5tu6mf6u uff da! I don’t know the answer to that!!! 😝
Is this UCAP land?
Yes, it sure is! Just a spot I found while driving around the middle of nowhere looking for access to public land...
I went duck hunting with a guy on Sauvie who had two small munsterlander.
I've seen more of them around the past couple years. Was in Vancouver at Sportsman's and there were 3 of us there with our SM's...we had a mini-convention in aisle 5. Lol.
@@SaltWaterSalmon while not nearly as uncommon as your SM, I get what you're saying as a wirehaired pointing griffon owner. Best dog I've ever had on the mountain quail, not worth a damn in the water though. I know some are but mine hates it....had to get a another lab. hard to beat in water and ease of training.
@@duckkillerclydeclyde I WANTED A GRIFF! My GF put the kibash on that! River didn’t like the water either at first. She does great now (she’s almost 10) BUT she’s no Labrador!
@@SaltWaterSalmon I've only had labrdors and the one griff. The griff is by far the most affectionate dog I've ever had. Not sure if it's the breed or just him. He's a lot more mischievous than a labrador too. Fun dog. I'll get another when this one is done.
@@duckkillerclydeclyde gotta have a spare! 🤣
