      @stephen2624 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Tek Yumi Then why doesn't GT change it's review score and re-review XIII if that's the case? Or at least admit Square-Enix bribed them or something. It's sad knowing that any good opinions about XIII that are lies. Why didn't GT defend it's score all those years ago?

    • @thirdeyekaii32
      @thirdeyekaii32 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stephen Mc Devitt because if they had really paid for it then it's their score, you can't just change it later on them......but that doesn't mean they can't go bash it years later lol

    • @stephen2624
      @stephen2624 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      THiRD EYE KAii But still... It's really jarring that they won't even owe up to their previous opinions but most likely Square-Enix will only allow it just in time to get people to buy their next game.

      Sanger Zonvolt Which is why I liked it a lot as I am not one to favor turn-based combat, because it's boring to me. But I still appreciated the lore and stories of each FF game, the combat is what kept me from getting in immersed in it fully.

      Though i do like this game, the release day was rushed.sadly some of the best missions occurred after you beat the game ,found in the extras 100 kills with magic and so on. These mission's were originally intended for the main game play and would have provided a more open world fell.

  • @Aezelll
    @Aezelll 10 ปีที่แล้ว +97

    I have played almost everything ever called Final Fantasy from the very beginning, and saying FFXIII is on the top 10 worst list is laughable.
    It wasn't one of the strongest entries sure. If you just played the storyline it was fairly short and pretty easy. However if you did all the side bosses/quests it had all the specialized grinding for armors/weapons/stats requiring well executed strategies. The combat system was also very decent compared to other crap on the market at the time. People just didn't like it because their expectations were ridiculously high for the first HD game and instead the game was just an averagely good game.

    • @NoctLightCloud
      @NoctLightCloud 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      agree!! I found XIII to be an extremely challenging game if you wanted to complete every side quest^^

    • @metae.4256
      @metae.4256 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      By the time I reached the end of the story, I just wanted the game to be over. Aside from that, I do agree about people having expectations way too high. The only thing really that bothered me was hallway syndrome. Otherwise, the other complaints do not apply to me. I think most people hate it just because it's cool to hate it.

    • @NoctLightCloud
      @NoctLightCloud 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +corronchilejano I found it good from the very beginning. I don't know, I still enjoyed FF13 more than many other "popular" game like Deus Ex, CoD, Atelier Rorona, Bravely Default, Smash Bros., Devil May Cry, Fifa, Far Cry, Blur.... I tried them all - games from various genres, but still find games like FF and KH the best (no matter the age) - just my own personal taste. So I couldn't care less about the "people don't like that", the gamer-community can surely make gaming less fun... :-/

    Not going to lie: I like Final Fantasy XIII, and Dirge of Cerberus.
    Final Fantasy XIII introduced me to the franchise, so I kind of enjoyed it, even if it's definitely one of the weaker entries I've played.
    Dirge of Cerberus was kind of a cool third person action game, I mean it's no where near as good as some action games, but at the same time it was still a enjoyable game that was good for wasting a few hours.

    I dont care what people say about Final fantasy 13 and Dirge of Cerburus. I love those 2 games to death. D.O.C was a really good way to fill some blanks for the FF7 story, and Final fantasy 13 part 1 was the hardest from all the lightning games which was a true challenge and that made me love the game. Also the storyline felt true to its core and managed to let the player make a connection to all characters not just 1 or 2.The other two games (part 2 and lightning returns) Felt Easy while still great but easy. Lightning is my bae :3

      +Chris Atlas Jimenez I am opposed in principle to some action shooter game adding story to a Final Fantasy game.

    • @RISSITECH
      @RISSITECH 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Chris Atlas Jimenez in my opinion, FFXIII lacks some things that made its predecessors some really very enjoyable games.... And yeah, in FFXIII it was really a pain in the ass to have all the greatest weapons and to finish all its "sidequests" because of that. There's almost no way to get easy money or any kind of hidden tricks so that you can quickly upgrade, the only way are some foes that you don't encounter anymore after you beat the game, if you beat the game without taking advantage of that enemy the rest of the possibilities takes just too much time and gets too much repetitive, if not frustrating. For me all other FFs that I played before was better in almost every aspect, FFXIII for me was great at graphics, but not soo great at the story as it should be, and instead of FFXIII-2 (that made some improvements) square could just make some Chrono series game, that is stuck on Chrono Cross (PS1), at least it's what FFXIII-2 fells like, a Chrono series game with a really messed up story, with just two playable characters with almost zero charisma, and a really really bad end, some Chrono game maybe could be better. Hope Square could be more like it was before changing to Square-Enix.

      Not going to judge since I can see how people would like FFXIII, but the problem for me is some of the choices made in the game's creation. Whether if it is the long hallway, simplistic combat system, meaningless rating system, confusing as all hell weapon progression, and... that train wreck of story... I'm sorry, but as soon as I beat the game, I had to trade it back in since it was almost like it was mocking me for trying to finish the game towards the end.

      chris batchelder I agree 12 had a meh combat system (personally i love that change from turnbased) but if you can get past it that game is a masterpiece truely. The story is amazing and it stays true to the ways of FF. Even the combat system for being so different is pretty perfect. All of the bosses can be extremely challenging and even if youre higher leveled and geared out right those strong bosses are still really strong. The final boss fight is grueling and lackluster but its a great great story. Personally FF12 and FFDD are my 2 all time favorite FF games because of how perfect the stories are. One last thing oh thank god nobody has had anything bad to say about FFDD yet XD.

    • @asimplecartoonist3898
      @asimplecartoonist3898 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dman41000 you know what? ill agree with you on 12's combat system. while it pisses me off and makes progress slow, it is still a breath of fresh air from turnbase. and the story (exceot pennelo, god i hate her) is really good

    • @Dman41000
      @Dman41000 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pennelo was XD. I do remember that my main team was Basch (2h Sword) Ashe (Sword Shield Magic Espers) and Pennelo (Sword Shield Magic Espers). But 12 is on the must play list for people who havent played it and the cinematics for it were like on par with early ps3 games cinematics.

    I'm sorry, but Final Fantasy XIII is not THAT bad, it wasn't the gem that the other Final Fantasy games were but it wasn't a "bad" game overall.

    • @linkno1
      @linkno1 11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It wasn't 'that good' either.
      It was the most linear FF game by far, the combat was mostly "mash X" until you got to the last few bosses where you suddenly needed to use paradigm shifts to win, the story wasn't great, the characters are pretty bland and the players unput into combat and leveling was pretty minimal.
      It ditches most of the stuff you expect to find in a direct FF sequel.
      It would have probably been better received if it wasn't a numbered sequel and was just an FF spinoff, or even a different title entirely but compared to other games, it was just bad.
      You could also say the same about XI and XIV being too different from other numbered sequels but, I've always thought they should have been named Final Fantasy Online rather than a direct numbered sequel. At least they are good though.

    • @youngsexynerd1
      @youngsexynerd1 11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      linkno1 I hate the argument of "it was just mash X the whole game" Ummmm news flash, almost every Final Fantasy is like that, and almost EVERY FF was just as linear, only disguised it better! In FF13 all you had to do was to go to the option menu and change the default battle command to set it on abilities instead of auto battle... then BAM, simple as that! But all the other stuff I can agree with, but it still was not a bad game, just different, I would compare it to FF8. And I would score it a 8 out of 10!

    • @linkno1
      @linkno1 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      youngsexynerd1 Even if you disabled auto attack, every battle option was under abilities and it was just as effective to use the first option in abilities (which was either 'attack' or 'ruin') for 95% of the game meaning you could still mash 'X' and see the end of it.
      I also wouldn't say it's as linear as the other FF games at all. I can't even think of what other FF game to compare it to because non of them have you crawling down a corridor for 20 hours.
      Hid it better? Sure they did, through overall better game design.

      dertien vijfenvijftig The band abilities and Cecil's Riku-like character development really sell that game for me. Also, the amount of optional characters, spells, areas, and countless other things you can do in that game just make it one of the most wonderful FF experiences for me. They took a world that they had made and expanded upon it, and they're awesome for that.

    The FFXIII Saga was actually quite brilliant and Vanille is arguably the most redeemable character. She was a nice contrast to Lightning, but also faced her inner demons because everything was basically her fault. By the end of Lightning Returns, I'd say she's definitely one of the best characters from XIII.

      OperationDEEZ The most interesting thing about Final Fantasy II is how many staples of the series first appeared in that game (chocobos, Leviathan, some dude named Cid, characters with unique names and personalities).As an artifact of video gaming history, it's sort of interesting, but as an actual game it's rotten. The stat progression system was already hinted at in the video, but let's go into it, and other problems, deeper:
      1) Stat Progression
      Increasing your stats comes from using your equipment. So to increase your Strength, you make an attack. To increase you HP, you take damage. To increase your Magic, you cast spells. You also cast spells to level them up. Every spell you acquire starts out at level 1, and must be raised to at least 4 or 5 to be useful in the later parts of the game. You must cast the spells hundreds of times, and you have a few charges each between inn rests. And you must do this for every spell. Did I mention yet that as physical stats go up, magic ones go down? In addition, to increase your Dexterity, you successfully dodge (hope you are using shields for this, which decrease your offensive stats). You want high Dexterity because it governs how easily you can run from encounters. But even with your dexterity and evade maxed out there are a large number of enemy formations it's impossible to run away from.
      2) Empty rooms
      Most dungeons in Final Fantasy games have side rooms that you want to explore because you will find treasures like weapons and armor that are immensely useful. Final Fantasy II does the opposite. It has a huge number of dungeons with tons of doors that lead to nothing. And it puts you in the middle of the room about six steps away from the door. In a game where every step is a possible random encounter that you probably cannot flee from, this is crossing the line into trolling.
      3) Worthless party members
      Firion, Maria, and Guy stay with you through the entire game. The fourth spot is filled by a different person as the plot demands. Most of the time it will be filled by someone who has horrible stats and no skills (I'm looking at you, Gordon), requiring you to stop the game and spend an hour or two grinding them up to acceptable levels.
      4) Tiny inventory
      This game gives you a single inventory panel that holds exactly 32 unique items, and every single thing you ever get goes in there. By the end of the game, about a third of it is filled with quest items that you used once and do nothing but take up space. They even drop Richard's dragon in there, again presumably just to troll you.
      Yes it's neat to read about its influence on the series, but never think for a moment that you should actually sit down and play this game. Go watch some Let's Play videos or something.

    I think its dumb to include FF13 and Dirge of Cerberus on this list... Sure FF13 didn't live up to its hype but that's not the games fault, its everyone else's for expecting the game to be something its not! If you put your nostalgia on the back burner and play FF13 for what it is, you find its actually a pretty fun game, with some good ideas and very technically solid! Although they could lose about 90% of the soap opera, melodrama, at least when the melodrama is not happening every 5 minutes I find my self really, REALLY enjoying it! Also props for putting FF2 ahead of FF13, that's always a point a bring up when people act like FF13 is the worst main title, its like people completely forgot about the first 3 FFs, and some can argue FF5 is worse also!

    The hate on FFXIII for linear gameplay is tragically hilarious. FFX was just as linear if not more so since random encounters were scaled back and the end game becomes so painfully apparent of what you should be doing that the creators even give you Auto-Life for the final battle. If that's not hand holding, then I don't know what is.
    Why does no one ever bring up FFXII and it's horribly crippled storyline, unimaginative characters and side quests that were so immersive it took away from the storyline and you'd just get lost going from Hunt to Hunt? How about that miserable boss fight at the end? The useless helpers? The miserable bootleg summons?
    Even if there's enough people to defend FFXII...I dare you to defend FFXII-2: Revanent Wings...THAT was the worst game with Final Fantasy ever attached to it.

      Notice how I don't talk about 7 being a good game? I just like to point out the fact that people hate blindly on one or two without noticing the painful shortcomings of the others.
      Last fight in 7 was also 1 attack, not a whole build up going from beating your father, to killing your aeons that ends in a wet fart. Almost as bad of a final boss battle as the garbage that was Necros at the end of 9.

    • @mr_selfdestrukt
      @mr_selfdestrukt 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Balaz The Omni Slash attack on Sephiroth wasn't the "last fight", it was basicly just an interactive cut scene.
      Aside from that though, there is nothing blind about my own dislike for FFXIII. What killed it for me was the characters, if I am going to put hours upon hours into a game, I have to at least "like" the characters in said game, though I personally disliked almost each and everyone of them in FFXIII.

      I rather enjoyed FFXII and it's universe. The summons didn't bother me at all because they were trying to build a new pantheon associated with Ivalice. The story didn't feel crippled to me at all because the story was very straight forward and more time was focused on the journey than plot development. FFXII had my favorite combat system and I almost never got bored of grinding and exploring. Bosses were challenging if you didn't use a certain spell that reversed damage and you had free reign to craft archetypes onto any of your PCs. Also: Japanese Starwars.

      @SaberRexZealot 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Basically. They praise it when it comes out because they don't take the time to actually examine the game to know whether or not it's actually good. XIII isn't a bad game; just very average and disappoints on nearly every facet the previous games banked on.

      owlflame That's why linear games that follow traditional values like Uncharted and BioShock get a lot of praise from journalists. They're linear, relatively short and straightforward games that don't require any extra effort from the player (No disrespect to those games as they're not really trying anything unique and different to begin with). Practically a journalist's paradise so that they can get the review out as quick as possible; hence the positive FFXIII scores initially. Nobody wanted to admit just how disappointing it was until after the honeymoon period.

    I'm sorry, but calling Final Fantasy XIII a "bad game" is just dishonest. Is it flawed? Absolutely! The story was weak, the narrative relies on the player to read the datalog to know what's going on, and some characters made the characters in Transformers 2 tolerable in comparison, so I'm not going to say it's one of the best FF games.
    But the linearity wasn't THAT restrictive, the combat (while limiting to only 1 character at a time) was exhilarating with the paradigm shifts, and the soundtrack and cinematics were GORGEOUS!
    I mean, for fuck's sake, they gave the game an 8.6 when it was released. And they call it a "bad game?" I don't think so…

    • @TheGrimSmile
      @TheGrimSmile 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest flaw I saw with FFXIII was that as soon as the world opened up, the story dwindled to practically nothing for everyone except Fang and Vanille. This is clear from the fact that in the little story summary available in XIII-2, of the 13 chapters, 10 of them take place during the first half of the game.
      I've heard that this is due to the fact that the focus was shifted late in production to focus on Lightning rather than Vanille and Fang, which would make a lot of sense. As it is, I found the characters' stories gripping for as long as they lasted, but they became so bland as each of their arcs were tied up.
      That being said, I loved the characters of XIII and loved pretty much everything about XIII-2. I look forward to eventually getting Lightning's Return,despite the poor reviews. Even with all the flaws in various games, SquareEnix has always managed to make me care about the characters.

      I mean if you used Auto-Battle sure. But if you start using abilities, it makes it feel more natural. Not a lot different than spamming Attack in previous FF's honestly.
      I'm a fan of every FF though. I like that they can change some features of it. ATB is fun sure, but it gets boring being in all of them. ADB wasn't the best, but I appreciate they tried that with XIII. I actually wouldn't mind seeing something like LR:XIII gameplay in the future.
      XV I hope keeps the series roots, but is different enough to stand out on it's own.

    • @BrentJohn

    • @BrentJohn
      @BrentJohn 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Again, I disagree. I feel that while the story was weak and required a datalog to understand it at all, the world was rich and rather intriguing. The battle system, while limited, allowed for character to move around the battle field freely instead of sticking to a single line in previous games, which is an improvement. It also allowed to switch roles when fighting with certain enemies and tactics.
      Yes, the first 10 chapters were a tutorial and were very linear. I'm not going to sit here and say the game is amazing because it's not. I just feel that it deserves a lot more credit than a lot of people give it.

      FF IV here, never played 13 so can't talk about that, FF IV for me was an average FF was not the best sure (hard to beat VI and VII)but definitely not a bad game, it have a neat combat, the introduction of augments and nice characters, i was disappointed that i couldn't choose my party but in the end i never struggled because of that, the party that the game forms are well balanced and make great sense in the plot, no sense in letting someone standing still in the ship while they have a kingdom to take care of, they have others tasks beyond being hanging around the 3 airships. The augments was the begining to the materia system, yang was nice but in combat i "always" could teach kain or edge how to kick.

      Entropian2012 Well, I know people complain about the draw system. About how you can't just replenish MP and go on casting the same way. But that just tells me they didn't make proper use of the *refining* system, because you can acquire magic rather easily as you acquire GFs and teach them to refine items into spells.
      And they also cannot wrap their heads around why Squall is the way he is, which annoys me to no end! The game makes it a point to explain that, in flashbacks to his childhood.

    I would defend Final Fantasy XIII as not being too bad, but if you wanna tack it on at Number 10, that's fair, it definitely has problems.
    But Final Fantasy II gets a lot of unjustified hate. Yeah, the battle system is lame. But you know what, it tried to be different and unique compared to other RPGs at the time. And it introduced a lot of Final Fantasy staple concepts like Chocobos, Cid, Ultima, and compared to the first game it actually tried to have a developed story and characters.
    It's not a gem of the series, but one of the worst there is? Cut it some slack. I've got it for PSP and I enjoy replaying it now and then for it's non-linear world allowing me to explore freely if I've the balls to brave the higher-level enemies (or the skill to grind up to their level).

      Ok, I've actually played ffii this time, the ORIGINAL version, and I have to say: this is several thousand times more likable than ffi. The game is playable, the enemies don't pwn you with magic, and you get a feeling of actual PROGRESSION. It's like Pokémon, except you have infinite EV's.

      SuperStachey eightnineeightnine Yup. And in the PSP release the bonus dungeons are accessible first thing in the game; in fact you have to enter them as early as recruiting Minwu to get his ultimate weapon from them. And the dungeon is unlocked by using the Key Words you learn, letting you access more floors as the game goes on and manipulate the content of the floors if you know the connection between them. FF2 for PSP is a game made for players who love to level grind and sequence break, and give them incentive to do so.

    The fact that FFXIII somehow garnered high scores upon release from almost every major reviewer and publication is proof at how ridiculous video game journalism is. I'd almost say politics are less corrupted. All we really get upon the release of game in a major series is a slew of advertisements masquerading as "reviews." It only takes a few months for the same publications to change their tune and acknowledge what a pile of shit games like FFXIII are. It's embarrassing. I know there are people that like it, and you're entitled to your opinion. But I feel sorry for you. The graphics and a few cool moments with Lightning are this game's only redeeming qualities. It's an annoying, convoluted, ridiculously linear, mess of a game that essentially plays itself.

    • @j800r
      @j800r 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reviewers don't agree with you so they must be shit and corrupt. Well guess what. Not everybody agrees with your jaded opinion. To me, XIII is far superior to XII (even though XII has far more replay value) and XI and XIV don't count cause main FF titles aren't supposed to be MMOs.
      Not everyone shares your opinion so get your head outta your ass and accept others or shut the hell up.

      ***** You have problems. Both in the fact that you're an angry little man, as well as you're a braindead fool who actually enjoys FFXIII. What kind of hypocritical douchebag blasts someone's opinion by telling them "not everybody agrees with you." The fact that the narrator even points out that GT has changed their opinion on the game illustrates my point. And it is WIDELY known that many "reviews" are simply paid advertising for newly released games. This isn't my opinion. This is a fact. I am truly sorry that you do not understand how the world works, as well as that you are a apparently an overly aggressive, mouth-breathing simpleton who believes FFXIII has any value whatsoever..

      Calm down, man. FFXIII was pretty entertaining. I liked it much more than IX, X, and XII personally... good music, fun gameplay, a few interesting characters (I wish that Hope died in a car fire at the beginning of the game, though, instead of being a playable character). I can agree that "reviewing" companies like IGN and their ilk are simply propaganda/advertising machines, though. You'll get much more objective reviews from independent sources.

    • @frozenaorta
      @frozenaorta 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cody Guadagnoli FFXIII is better than FFIX??? Wow. Well, again, you must understand you're in the minority here. If XIII were a stand-alone, original title, it'd be different. But the flames it constantly attracts are deserving, because it has really become the embodying peak of what all core fans of the FF series have come to despise. The linearity. The convoluted leveling system that implies customization, but is really just tedious busy work. The annoying characters and cliched enemies. The reason it's often referred to as "Final Hallway" is a testament to its ridiculous gameplay mechanic in a series that once was revered for its open exploration and customizeable playstyle. It's a game that nearly plays itself, which renders it inevitably into a movie. I don't need to go into much detail as to why the game has been blasted ad nauseum, but my point is the hypocritical nature of sites like IGN who claim they're reviewing games, when they're actually just advertising them. There aren't nearly enough independent sources for solid reviews of games (in comparison to the cynical film reviewing community), which is why so many people have to look for self-produced reviews like Angry Joe's to actually find a fair evaluation of a newly released title.

    • @capeda9942
      @capeda9942 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      frozenaorta I wasn't impressed by IX. I liked the art style, but the story was ludicrous and the battle system was a joke following VIII's Junction/Draw/Eidolon system. The only character's I marginally liked were Vivi and Steiner, and they were about as one-dimensional as you can get.
      I could rant on about IX, but this is about XIII. Yeah, it was on rails. And to be perfectly frank, the entire series has been pretty linear. XIII just wears it on its sleeve. The franchise has usually boasted an open world, but there are fairly limited sidequests and other avenues of exploration in comparison to rival RPGs. Final Fantasy has pretty much been about turn based combat, fleshed out characters, and epic plots since FFIV. Play the old games again... there's honestly only an illusion of open exploration. It's always optional, limited in scope, and has no effect on the main gameplay other than to trivialize combat. MMOs and open world games like Skyrim are much better for the purpose of sandbox style exploration. I'll tell you right now with near complete certainty that the main FF franchise will never have more than a slight focus on that aspect from this point on (aside from in their own MMOs, since that entire stye is pretty much based around doing your own thing).
      As far as independent reviews... youtube, amazon, and gamefaqs.com tend to have a plethora of that stuff. I wouldn't trust a magazine or gaming website to tell me what to spend my money on in this day and age.

      x is linear thru the story for the most part. you can backtrack but there really isnnt any reason to and its also a pain without the airship. sidequest and backtracking are clearly designed for llate to post game here just like 13
      13 is leaner up to the point you reach gran pulse where you can do cieth missions and explore optional areas
      also, there is just more stuff to do in 13 compared to x. in terms of content, it had more optional areas, cieth missions> monster arena, etc.
      dont get me wrong, i love ffx and think its the better game, im just pointing out that saying final fantasy 13 is a bad game because its linear is unfair

      I can see why people don't like it, I think the story is ok, but not great and the characters are rather bland with only Sazh and maybe fang being interesting and not annoying(Vanille's voice pitch is way too high). Other than that, they made changes to the battle system, which were ok, but changed where the tactical aspect of ff games came from, switching it from party composition and abilities to switching paradigms.
      Overall, I didn't really like it, but I don't think it deserves as much hate as it got/gets.
      On the other hand, a lot of people say FFXII sucks but is one of my favorites even though it does have some flaws, I just really liked what they did with the combat system and most of the characters were interesting(except Vaan).

    I can't with the people who say that if you like 13 you don't care about the plot or have never played any other final fantasy. Final fantasy XIII has one of the most intricate lores of all the saga, (yes, more than FFVII), and of you think the battle system is just pressing "X" you haven't been playing attention.
    Yes, some characters are irritating (Snow is just the worst, to be honest). Yes, paths are too linear, even though i feel like that is a part to the plot (you see, for most of the time you're just doing a mission and obeying in order to don't become a monster, but then when you get to chapter eleven and you diverge from your path, you find yourself in an extensive open world full of possibilities).
    So yeah it's not one of the best final fantasy games ever but not at all one of the worst. You didn't even include revenant wings xD

  • @taylormatlock2407
    @taylormatlock2407 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Alright. The bashing on Final Fantasy XIII should really stop... Yes, I know it was very hyped up and tons of people were disappointed that it wasn't the end-all game that mankind had always dreamed of. Nothing will ever be that great. But this reviewer and many others have no idea what they were talking about when it comes to the story and its characters. Yes, the linearity is a bit absurd, but guess what! It makes perfect sense with the story and the fact that the game becomes huge when they travel to Gran Pulse is almost a beautiful artistic statement. Now, the characters... If people would just look past Vanille's voice (even though I've heard WAY worse), she has the potential to be one of the emotionally deepest characters in the entirety of Final Fantasy. So shut up about her and the rest of the characters! I don't hear ANYONE complaining about how awfully dull and predictable Cloud Strife and Sephiroth were. Focus your frustrations about characterization on something else because Vanille (and Snow. Seriously, reviewer?) doesn't deserve it. Far from it. Honestly, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy VI, and Final Fantasy XIII are my favorites, but that's only because I can actually appreciate deep storylines with deeply affected characters. People let too many things come between them and a good game and Final Fantasy XIII is the best example that I can think of. Sorry that everybody got butt-hurt that it wasn't as mind-blowing as they wanted it to be, but oh well. It's still a great game. I'd bet, oh how I'd bet, if Square Enix ever did publish a Final Fantasy VII HD Remake, everybody would be disappointed and it would be the worst game EVERRRRR. ...And if they didn't change the story, character development, and script of the original to the remake, the public would actually be right for once!

      ***** Whether or not you believe that *Gran Pulse is large and beautiful, doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things since the story line still demands a certain amount of linearity for realism and cohesive storytelling. Yes, this turned a lot of people away from the game. But linearity does not make a bad game. In fact, it's usually the strictly linear games that end up having the best stories and characters as they're developed in a way as if you are reading a book and books are never open-world. Not enough people have the attention span nowadays to enjoy a good story and that is how Final Fantasy XIII came under so much fire. Maybe today's society can't deal with games like that, but that may be because today's society can't deal with reading books either because it's just too hard to keep their attention on any one thing for a set period of time. They need "mini-games" consistently because they just can't handle themselves, which is truly pathetic.

      ***** The story was explained as perfectly as it needed to be. It was built to make you think. It didn't need any more narration than it had. The datalog was only there to help and provide deeper insight on the mythology working behind the scenes in the game. But yes, some games do want you to read a little bit. Is that really so hard? If you really enjoyed reading as much as you say that you do, I wouldn't think it would be so difficult to take a little time to read up on some vocabulary if you didn't understand it. Especially if you actually wanted to make the tiniest effort to enjoy the game. Honestly, the two sequels actually are crap and were only created to milk the mythology out of the story, but XIII alone was a stand-alone and fantastically moving story with twists and turns every which way. People just fail to understand it. Kind of like how some people manage to fail to understand the Leonardo DiCaprio film, Inception. Weak example, I know, but lots of people hate it because they don't understand it. By the way, great counter. "Downright stupid," huh? I dare you to build a story half as great.

      I liked it quite a bit too, but I can see why so many hates it so much. The pacing is atrocious and the first seven hours or so are both extremely tedious and very confusing and their storytelling methods are just uninspired, as if they wanted to make a movie of even a book instead of a game. Topping that with Vanille, Hope and Snow being absolutely gratingly annoying until they get some character development later on, it leads to an incredibly unforgiving entry threshold. As long as you have enough patience and forgiveness, you will eventually see the gem beneath all the grime, but in the end, I can fully understand why so few bother to dig that deeply.

      To be fair, I rate FF8 myself as a low point in the games as a whole, but I do it because of the tedious nature of drawing magic, coupled with a general feeling to max out the spells drawn in case of needing them (or to upgrade later), not because it was a bad game per se. The same can be said of grinding for spells/abilities in most of the other games in the series, too, though; 8 just gets ragged on because you're doing it typically in the same fight, not spread out across hundreds of fights.

      I think XIII falls into the same category as II: a failed experiment. I appreciate the streamlining they tried. I also thought the characters had potential, but in the end the execution wasn't on par with the concept and we ended up with a game that was boring and repetetive and a story many people simply couldn't relate to. What really brings the shame on square enix is that they extended xiii into an awful trilogy with two games that much like the original had good ideas and concept but just an awful execution. I never thought, I'd ever find a moogle annoying, but Xiii-2 managed me to do that in just a couple of minutes! And LR treats its idea of an open world as somewhat revolutionary when we have all the gtas assassins creeds elder scrolls and even final fantasy onlines out there!

      +PSspecialist You really think that Yoshinori Kitase would sit down with his fellows and be like: "Hey folks, let's make a real BAD game, so people have a reason to hate us!" ?
      He would never, in fact Squenix is keen on doing a better fan service with each game they produce, what's quite plausible in my view. While doing research on our interests and preferences nowadays, they might could be off beam sometimes and fail our expectations. The result is a game, that's not real good, like All The Bravest. But I simply refuse to call a game completely bad and slag it in an almost subconscious level because after all it's been made for us: The Final Fantasy fans =)

    • @Highwaysonyfan87
      @Highwaysonyfan87 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Okay and? Uncharted Golden Abyss was made for Uncharted fans. I am an Uncharted fan. Golden Abyss was trash. I'm a fan of jrpg's in general. I'm a Tales of fan for example. I love the Tales series. It's one of my favorite RPG franchises, but I still think Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Hearts R are very weak games. They have some good in them for sure, but are overall poor games to me. It doesn't matter what the intent is. It doesn't matter how much work is out into it. At the end of the day, if the game is good, the game is good. If it's bad, it's bad.

    • @KittyCate105
      @KittyCate105 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +David Restrepo "If a game is bad, it's bad" now that's a real primitive way of thinking...you couldn't be more subjective. Be careful, i didn't call each game great just because of the effort of Squenix, I said some more some less. What I was trying to say is that it's not that simple to judge unsubtle over a game because they're ALWAYS good and bad points. If you say that a game is bad you gotta explain yourself, especially out of an objective point of view. If you personally don't like it that's okay. But nobody gives a shit as long as don't got specific (comprehensible) reasons to it.

    • @Highwaysonyfan87
      @Highwaysonyfan87 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could explain why a game is bad if I wanted to though??? But unless there's a really in depth discussion going on or I'm doing a review, it's unecessary to go into detail. If a game is bad, it's bad. People can pour their hearts into something that is ultimately bad. Hard work does not equal a good product. They are not directly related like that.

      The second best installment is XIV a realm reborn and Heavensward. Third would be 4 or 6. Crisis Core is also underrated.

    FF 13 Sure had it's flaws, but i don't think this game should be on the top 10 worst FF Games. And about the game's Linear level design, I don't think many people understands why this game was so linear to begin with. Sure it would be nice if we could go and explore towns and other locations, but characters were on the run from the PSICOM, so it is only logical that returning and derping around previously visited locations would be a bad idea.

      Guypersonmanthing3 RPG's are supposed to be linear if their more story focused, a lot of the final fantasy are linear, and don't compare sonic to final fantasy, there different genres, and ff13 isn't like sonic 06, ff13 gameplay was nice, while sonic 06 was glitchy. FF9 is worse than FF13.

      FINAL FANTASY IX is NOT worse than XIII at all. Better characters, better exploration, better gameplay, better story. The only flaw the game has is its graphics.
      Don't you ever say something like that again. Though I don't like XIII or that trilogy, I still played the first 2 and IX is not worse at all.

    • @bcohen5702
      @bcohen5702 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are way wrong. Plus I used Sonic 06 to compare for levels of awfulness. Sure, lots of JRPGs are linear, but the really good ones are still open ended, and can tell a great story, without HAVING YOU STUCK IN A HALLWAY! Western rpgs aren't linear (well the really good ones aren't), and I don't mean by just hallway stuff, I mean in dialogue choices, pathways you take, how you fight, etc. Hey, Final Fantasy VII, a really good JRPG is like that! Hey, Skyrim, an open-ended sandbox western RPG got a 40/40 from Fitmitsu, japans #1 gaming magazine. Plus in story shitness, Sonic 06 is just as bad as FFXIII. For different reasons (though sometimes similar reasons), but they are both equally bad.

      10 and 8 are good games... only problems i see on 8 are the battle system employed pretty much made noobs cry and the unrewarding grind.... the story is also too vague for shallow people who cant read between the lines....
      X-2 and XIII-2 however are justified and both should be put on the top 5 of this list with X-2 being no 2 or 1

      8 is my fave. The story line is great, the characters in it are great and the Graphics are also good for PS1.
      X is the first and the best FF game on the PS2.
      X-2: You play with 3 hot chiçks what more do you want?
      XIII is on place 10 and XIII-2 is better so should not be in the list, hands down.

    quite misleading review on both FF2 & FFL/SaGa series. FF2 was actually adapted on how western RPG gameplay back then, and the review seems didn't consider current gaming at the time. In fact, core of FF2 gameplay was later survived and adapted into it's own series, the SaGa/FFL line-ups. And I do like SaGa series as well. The series wasn't probably meant for everyone since the series itself was dubbed hardcore-JRPG.
    In fact, I still highly regard both FF2 & SaGa, at least way better than FF7 (yes, the main game, not the spin-offs). Perhaps that's also why FF13 also bad, becoz main protagonist is essentially Cloud-female version. lol

      I agree, not sure why FF2 is hated on so much. Final Fantasy II definitely does not deserve to be anywhere near as high on this list at all. At worst it should be number 10, but I think it is better than a lot of other FF games out there. I think its hard to argue that FF2 doesn't have the most productive villain in all of the FF series. Managing to conquer the planet, Hell, and Heaven throughout the game. Even Kefka only managed to ravage a section of the world. FF2 also had some insanely good music. Castle Pandemonium's theme is still one of my favorite FF songs of all time. The sped up melody from the overworld theme gives you the feeling of "this is what I've worked for, its all led to this." Haven't had the feeling from almost any other Final Fantasy game. (I actually Liked FFTA a lot, but would totally be on board with FFTA2 being on the list.)

    It's interesting to see that the FFXIII fans are butthurt over this. I enjoyed Dirge of Cerb. and FFII, heck FFXIV even had it's perks and so did The After Years and All The Bravest. The majority of FFXIII fans haven't played other FF games and if they had they would understand how disappointing the game was as a part of the franchise. That doesn't make it a bad game, it's just not as great as others and this list is listing the worst games out of a stellar franchise. Heck, being the worst in this franchise is still good considering the giants they are up against (FFVII, FFVIII, FFX...)

    • @iiixySaTnAfLaNiF
      @iiixySaTnAfLaNiF 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Would it be any different if, for whatever reason, Final Fantasy VII was placed in this list?

    • @gavrilapolovinkin3682
      @gavrilapolovinkin3682 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honey, let me reiterate what I said - Final Fantasy is a great franchise, saying that FF13 is one of the worst is not really a bad thing. It's like having a box of chocolates and saying one of them is one of the worst, but it's chocolate - all chocolate is good. FFVII slays FF13 any day - it had more going for it, a better more organised storyline that was well presented, characters that were fully-fleshed and had personalities. FF13 for many was a let down, it had so much potential, but it wasn't quite getting there.

    • @iiixySaTnAfLaNiF
      @iiixySaTnAfLaNiF 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @gavrilapolovinkin3682
      @gavrilapolovinkin3682 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is...you just need to play FFVII to understand. All FFXIII has going for it is good graphics. It's a let down, it's not bad, it's a let down.
      As a disclaimer I've played every FF game to date. FFXIII was so bad it needed a sequel and a sequel to that to compensate for how poorly it was received.

    • @iiixySaTnAfLaNiF
      @iiixySaTnAfLaNiF 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have played FFVII. I once adored FFVII, but I also have found many faults with it. It is not a perfect game in my opinion and neither is FFXIII. To compare the two is a stale and boring argument, especially when one states their opinion as fact.

  • @garnet1223
    @garnet1223 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Well I actually really loved FF13 and all of it's sequels. It definitely comes to one of the most legendary games I've ever played. I feel that only the people who grew up with the old final fantasy games are the ones who criticize 13 so much. They are used to the old way it was played and they like the nostalgia - that part is understandable. As for A Realm Reborn well, it's one of the most popular MMOs out there(after some rework) I can't even put my opinion in this one, FF14 is inargueably a great game. Dirge of Cerberus is also pretty cool but I'm not going to make this comment last forever so I'll cut it short. This video was pretty inaccurate. I see other people in the comments also point out some of the other mislabled "bad FF games"

      I wouldn't know about favorite for those types of mmos but the Witcher series would probably be my favorite lore/story telling wise.. Or maybe it's because I'm playing that right now not sure if its worthy of being a favorite.
      But I also enjoy the Tales series. I've played every one from Innocence on. Persona is mentionable.. love those games a ton. There is also the Aveyond series(starting with Rhen's Quest) That game is more of a less popular (2D) game though. Aveyond deserves all the hype that all the old(2D) FF games did imo.

    • @valypaly3
      @valypaly3 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually not as true as you would think. FFXIII was the very first Final Fantasy game that I had ever played and is the one that introduced me to the series. I also hadn't played any old school JRPG's in general so I really wasn't comparing it to anything like that. Yet I still wasn't crazy about it even when I first played it, though that doesn't mean I hated it. Even after playing and enjoying many older FF games since then I still find things to like in XIII (other than the obvious graphics). I did have a lot of fun with the gameplay and battle system and I do feel like the story had a lot of potential.
      My problem with the story comes down to it's presentation which we can really blame the directing for. It was all shown in such a backwards way with those 13 day segments, and they weren't even shown in order to make matters worse. The characters I also just felt struggled with proper development and even pacing when development happened. For example Fang having a meltdown quite literally out of the blue just to add character development for her and to get her Eidolen. It was over so quick and seemed very random, things like this just kept happening constantly throughout the game without the proper buildup.
      They also do little to explain much of the lore and terminology so I found myself frequently going to the catalog for answers. This should never be necessary in any game, for most people who played it was all very confusing and nonsensical. And as if it couldn't get any worse in it's sequel they through time travel into the mix. Just an all around horrible decision. Time travel is rarely ever pulled off well and they don't have a good track record as it is with it being a mess as well in FFVIII, in my opinion. I was actually very happy with XIII's ending, it made me smile and was one of my favorite things about the game. Then XIII-2 completely discarded it. Lightning Returns I enjoyed for its gameplay and return to towns and npc's. So all in all, story presentation was my big issue with XIII and then just the story in general with the last two. But again I still found some enjoyment in them, mainly the first, and I'm very thankful for it because it introduced me to an amazing series.
      People often refer to one of my favorite games, Lost Odyssey, as the real Final Fantasy XIII since they are the only games really like that for the PS3/360 generation. It was actually made by Mistwalker, a company that consists of mostly former Square employees including its founder. The Final Fantasy games are best known for having memorable and very compelling stories and these guys really bring that to the table. Even if you love FFXIII, when looking at it objectively I would think you could see it's short comings with how it showed its story throughout the game and things that could have been done better. I know I might sound a bit harsh but that's just because it frustrates me with how much of a difference the presentation and pacing would have made. It has potential, and there are things to enjoy with the story for those who care to put in the extra work themselves to look a bit deeper. Some characters were also very unappealing to many, namely Vanille and Snow, and I can definitely see why so maybe some reworking on them as well could have gone a long ways. Anyway, all kinds of people like and dislike this game, and there's also others who fall more in between like me.

      If it were fanservice for the male audience it wouldn't so wholeheartedly homage such blatantly feminine things as Magical Girl shows and japanese pop music. X-2 is a fantastic game and while there is some fanservice, it's all goodhearted. It's so irritating how people never gets the plethora of things X-2 is referencing and homaging... As a kid who grew up on Sailor Moon and j-pop music videos, X-2 just homages so many things I love.
