😯Extremely Complicated! The Shoulder Fired Mortar of the 1700s 🇺🇸

  • A Revolutionary War living historian demonstrates how a Soldier would have used the shoulder fired mortar.
This shoulder fired flintlock mortar or Hand mortar was the predecessor to the modern day grenade launcher. It fired a small explosive shell that was filled with black powder and projectiles. It took a two man team to opperate and had a tendency to prematurity detonate. Must be scary to be the users of this 😯💥

I think that still goes to the multiple curved barrel rifles made to shoot around corners.
When they worked they had little to no accuracy and when they didn’t they just exploded.
It was a cool idea though that if effective could have saved the lives of so many

Hahaha yeah but that's an extreme case. More common, at least with me, to end up with some units still as swordsmen while early musketry is being adopted, which is realistic since it takes time to standardize on new technology.
If Fire and Sword is AT ALL realistic, even in the 1600s there were lots of soldiers and mercenaries armed with spears. Especially before bayonets were perfected because spears are inherently VERY useful against cavalry but swordsmen and musketeers with no spear were vulnerable ESPECIALLY when out in the open which is a cavalryman's dream. The environment they're best in, a field. If there's no square formation, or no formation at all, anyone in the open is easy pickings without a spear.
And if order is broken and they're routed and scatter, not even line-formation which is still dangerous because they're easily flanked with the speed of a horse, that's time when they can to some degree decide if they want to clean house. To let them mercifully escape, or... pursue and absolutely devastate them with injuries and fatalities. Given the time, I think the latter was chosen more often than I'd like to imagine.
That's Hell, being in a field in scattered formation with cavalry charging at you while merely on foot. Vulnerability doesn't begin to describe it. If you can only fire one shot every 30-60 seconds, get attacked by two cavalrymen at once, and either miss both or even manage to shoot ONE, and you're all alone in no formation at all, and you have no spear or sufficiently long bayonet, your life is forfeight to their will if they are at all effective cavalrymen.
But anyhow, back to leaving units un-upgraded, it is commonplace for 2nd line units or support units or what not to be issued old and arguably or literally outdated equipment. In some cases, people had to fight in WWI to my knowledge with Martini-Henry rifles because they didn't expect combat but it happened and that's all they had available to use, allegedly. And in WWII, I don't know if it saw combat, but some soldiers probably carried Lebel rifles from 1886, 53 years before the start of WWII in 1939, and yeah some MAY have had to be shouldered and used against the Germans in France! It's possible!
And that was basically replaced during or before WWI! It was the best rifle on the planet initially for a couple short years but quickly was outclassed by other nations adopting superior repeating bolt-action technology that can be reloaded with more than one round at a time.

It can happen in Civilization, but the thing is... there's professional reenactments done from time to time with actual period-correct weaponry and uniforms. Like the tatoo, I think it's called, at Signal Hill in St. John's, NL where weapons/uniforms of roughly I think the 18th OR 19th century, and WWI. Possibly another period, too? I can't recall, but they blank-fire a literal muzzle-loading cannon that MIGHT be fully functional though I don't know for sure, probably not I guess, sadly, being Canada, but also blank-firing from rifles and muskets to demonstrate some doctrine of local Military history. Might even be wearing the 'blue puttees' they were known for and named after, 'The Blue Puttees,' but I don't recall. Might be late-WWI era when I think they might have been replaced.
Very interesting stuff, and yeah, they're acting as soldiers was allegedly trained to fight for their time periods. So it's kinda not unrealistic to leave a certain unit under-trained compared to more modern units to leave them as, basically, reenactors but could still be upgraded to more modern weaponry which would in effect be recruiting the reenactors voluntarily in the Military. Or maybe the reenactors are actually members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, I don't know. But I saw that 'tattoo' thing one time and it was very exciting to witness and experience.
The fife and drums, ah, always lovely and morale-uplifting. A happy whistle and a steady rhythm. I love Military history, and if I can ever afford it I might actually become one. I'd enjoy that, maybe even work on my British accent and volunteer as a relatively authentic-sounding Brit at least by American standards who may struggle to replicate it. But I'm pretty decent at it, at times anyhow, if I'm into it. I love America but wouldn't mind portraying some 'sneering imperialist' to quote an unlockable perk in FallOut: New Vegas set in Nevada around 2281 or so in a nuclear post-apocalyptic wasteland caused Chinese nukes in October 2077 over 200 years earlier.
I kinda like that game, in case you didn't catch on. A lot :)

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.
