When we interviewed Marty for our documentary 10 years ago he told this story almost word for word as he did in this interview with Hannible. Marty's version is the truth
@Robert Johnson most wrestler's lie to make themselves look good and can't admit to certain things. Marty always tells it how it is even if it makes him look bad at times
I think I remember seeing a trailer for that documentary years ago. Was that the "Lost Rocker" movie where Marty was talking to these young kids about the Rockers and they had absolutely NO idea who he was? It was rather sad. What ever became of that movie?
Having met Marty personally and hearing him speak, I have to credit him for this: he sticks to his story and doesn't change nor edit it for his benefit. A friend of mine said she refused to read part of Bret Hart's book "because I don't want my pristine image of him to be tarnished by what I might read." The reason I mention this is because as admirers(I hate the word fan), we were given such messages that the wrestlers were super human and perfection defined...meanwhile when I sat in the first row(sometimes)at the shows, seeing the wrestlers LITERALLY fall on their heads, I'd think, "I really don't believe that they're NOT getting hurt." From listening to Marty, he reminds me that he's a human being which I think the wrestling world tended to(and still sometimes)conveniently forget.
Marty’s version is much more detailed. Shawn’s version comes from his RF shoot, which was done around 99-2000, and 70% of that shoot was Shawn spewing bullshit.
All these years i always thought Marty was a sleaze ball but he really seems like a genuine good man. Everyone knows shawn is a sleazeball. Marty has lived a good life with tons of awesome stories. Hope he is happy
@@brianezell5790 I understood everything he said here. I've heard Marty speak with garbled speech; that's when I can't understand what he says...but I'm not going to argue about this.
Just to play devil's advocate, Vince brought Marty back several times after this incident and Marty was the one who messed it up each time. Shawn is an easy punching bag in shoot interviews, but The Rockers break-up angle would have made them BOTH big stars. It was one of the most diligently produced TV storylines back then, the barber shop scene and the montages they played still hold up in terms of production value.
I forgot how on fire the crowd was for that one promo with Sherri holding the mirror for Shawn and seeing Marty’s reflection making his return. That angle was so awesome but unfortunately ruined by Shawn’s out of control ego and Marty’s demons.
nilanniruthan finally someone with some sense. The barber shop angle was supposed to culminate in a huge match between the two at WrestleMania. But of course, Marty gets arrested for coke possession right after the angle, and he loses his spot.
@@dantegood2195 Thank You! we all know about the politics and the crap HBK pulled back then, but to say that Marty was just an innocent victim of said politics is not true at all. Can't blame absolutely everything on Shawn.
They way I understand this is that Shawn didn't think Vince would let them quit, and they could use it as leverage. Shawn was really surprised when Vince called their bluff.
Yeah word for word I remember shawn talking about this in his shoot interview. But shawn said that Marty was hot about. I didnt know shawn was hot about to. But I met Marty a couple of years ago and everything that I brought up him about his shoot interview was true he told me the hole story just cause I was a huge fan of him Marty was a good guy and funny as hell too. Even all the guys including Bret even said that Marty was just as good as shawn and should been on his level
I think Marty would have been good in WCW if they would have put him in a tag team or mentor like storylines. Or perhaps if he joined up in a group such as the Filthy Animals. He could have been tweener or heelish but realistic. He wouldn't have been relied on to be the main interviewer and could be in tag or six man matches. Honestly his gimmick was stale in WCW. He never devolped. A new finisher or move set would have done wonders. I'm not saying drop his moves, just adjust or add on to them.
It was SummerSlam 90 at the Philadelphia Spectrum, that's the night Shawn couldn't work do to the leg injury. Hercules clipped him with the chain and Marty worked the match and took the PowerPlex for the loss.
@@ChrisHonowayOFFICIAL yes it nice. People don't realize what a great athlete Paul Roma was. How he run up the turnbuckles, his leap onto the ring apron, I could go on. It's definitely worth a watch.
Last time I checked, Shawn was supposedly a good, charitable Christian man. So, how about a little help for a guy who helped make you in the business? Funny how he doesn’t help Marty with his injuries. Marty is an effed up mess... no doubt... but at least he is honest.
Marty janetty was the best rocker in my opinion Shawn comes across as fake wear as marty tells u straight if I had 40 grand to give Ild give it 2 marty to sort out his foot
Probably just has unruly hair...Or he didn't feel like fixing it...Some guys hide their baldness under hats but a good number do it for convience also...
First off HBK in his prime (1995-98) was the greatest wrestler/entertainer of all time. He was able to combine his talent, athleticism and charisma into one of the greatest ever. Go watch some of his first matches and then watch a few in his prime and you'll see what i mean. Now on the flip side he let his EGO and love for the almighty dollar outweigh his loyalty to friends, co workers and whoever the hell else crossed his path. The problem is in the wrestling business you have to outshine your peers in order to rise up the ranks. Being friends with the Boss is also a no brainer. The wrestling business as a whole is structured in a way that forces you shit on the next guy to get on top. You can play nice and Job for others or be a Jobber. But where's that going to get you in the long run. Marty played it safe and look where it got him. The most underrated, underpaid superstar of all time. Shawn was a better wrestler and entertainer but he also new how to play politics. And now he's known as THE ICON, THE MAIN EVENT AND THE SHOWSTOPPER.
Marty jannetty should be in the WWE Hall of Fame

Shawn Michaels was a worthless lying sack of shit back then from what I can see

I believe Marty's version of events.
Yeah. Dude comes across as a pretty straight shooter.
His timeline is off by about a year. Shawn's knee injury was summer 1990, the commercial shoot would've been summer 1991.
Yes I believe Marty .Shawn was always A SNEAK !
I believe Marty as well. Shawn Michaels behavior backstage over the years lets me know Marty isn't lying.
Marty deserves more credit. He was a great worker even though he had his demons.
Who doesn’t?
He was a good worker in the ring, but greatly lacked charisma. It also doesn’t help the way he constantly smiles when he’s not supposed to be smiling.
That Patterson impression though
His Vince is pretty good to.

He doesn’t sound crystal clear here. He sounds garbled.

Knowing about Shawn and Vince's relationship now, he probably took that like a shot to the heart
My kind of history I love hearing the stories
The biggest thing I got out of this was Marty does a pretty damn good Patterson!

Marty should have been pushed way more then shawn !! He carried the team yeah I got
loves martys interviews, i always wondered why shawn was hurt as summerslam 1990. marty said survivor series, hes done so many shows. awsome dude

Martys one cool dude i met a bunch in kc after matches he carried the rockers no sellout

HAPPY 59TH BIRTHDAY FREDRICK MARTIN JANNETTY !!!!
Marty is really good to listen to even though he's got some side effects from partying too hard
I thought it was the ice cream bars
Marty got Ned Starked. That's when an honest man who values loyalty and expects the same of everyone else gets you shafted in the end.

As a kid I always thought Marty Jeannette was a better wrestler than Shawn Michaels.
Are the young bucks mentioned here at all?
Hannibal The Animal Has to join AEW!!
I think if marty would've added a lucha dor style (not overly do it) and got rid of the rocker gimmick he would've been an awesome wrestler.

Marty looks like Tom Wopat.=)
Vince called their bluff.😂
Sounds just like Sawer Brown
I never liked that fruitcake Shawn.
There’s always 3 sides to a story
Tell that to Mark, Mathew, Luke and John
I still believe Marty over Shawn
I find the more successful a person is, the less their word can actually be trusted.
Marty sounds like Buffalo Bill
He should have just let Michaels talk to Vince himself pass the phone to him. This is a bunch of he say she say nonsense
9:12 Sean said he was married???
The context is different than how some may take it. He meant he would be out of work and Shawn would be stuck with them. Easy mistake to make.
Yes it's true Shawn Michaels was married back then but him marriage didn't last long.
