  • Marty Jannetty on Chuck Austin Paralyzation Incident
    WWE Legend and one half of the legendary "Rockers" Tag Team Marty Jannetty talks about the infamous situation where WWE enhancement "extra" talent Chuck Austin was paralyzed due to taking a "Rocker Dropper" from Marty wrong due to not being properly trained to wrestle which led to a major lawsuit against the WWE & Jannetty where Austin was awarded $26.7 million of which Jannetty reportedly had to pay $500,000. The WWF reportedly appealed the ruling and eventually settled out of court for $10 million.

      @janesmith7676 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could've kept rooting for Marty too - Shawn was always a better worker with more natural charisma, but Marty wasn't far behind early on. But he opted not to take his career seriously, and not embark on that next step he should've taken in a breakout singles career. He kept living like it was 1989, and made no serious effort to be more professionally focused and more of an adult. That's terribly sad for a guy with great talent and potential in his rather short-lived hey day.
      Ricky and Robert from RnR Express had very similar problems. They are basically what the Rockers would've been if Shawn too, lacked ambition/focus. The minds of many of these men never truly evolved past the 1980s, youthful party life. They really believed the ride would never end.

      But with all that said, I can completely understand the obligatory "Marty>Shawn" comments that show up in virtually every discussion about him. It just makes SO much sense to be preferential toward the guy who still hasn't cleaned up his act, and amounted to very little in his career and life (does he even have a family?). Right on.

    He speaks the truth. Marty was never to blame for this. His only responsibility was to know the guy he was about to wrestle, and had never met before, was qualified. But Chuck way overstated his ability to everyone, and the WWF didn't screen him or check him out. They also failed to have enough medical crew on standby to get Chuck help sooner, as he laid on the mat for some 20 minutes.

    I watched the clip back and Marty was right. You can see how when Marty jumped, the guy held Marty in the air for an extra 2 seconds and instead of immediately pancaking, he dropped his head literally almost like he was taking a DDT. Almost looked like he hesitated taking Marty’s move. You can pause that clip and edit in Jake Roberts in the DDT position,and that guy would be in perfect position for the DDT.

  • @leomdk939
    @leomdk939 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    OK, but Marty stopped the story before he got to the part where he does share some of the blame. Yes, it was Chuck Austin's fault he broke his neck because he lied and took the move wrong. Definitely. Notice this is where Jannetty stops the story - but watch the video itself, there's a bit more. After Austin broke his own neck, Marty Jannetty then rolled him over while Chuck Austin was telling him his neck was broken and he couldn't move. They guy was clearly dead weight, but Jannetty horsed him over anyway. Then Jannetty tagged Michaels in to jump on him and pin him. It was mostly Austin's fault, but you can't just ignore the part where Jannetty was negligent and moved a guy with a broken neck and cared more about getting the finishing move in than minimizing the most serious injury a person could have.

    The WWE flushed millions down the toilet with stupid business ventures, they were stupid enough to not pay for this dude's hospital bills so he sued them...wich was way more expensive for them, and everyone who asks nice gets a few rehabs. But they can't pay a few thousand bucks for people who worked their asses off for them and need surgery like Marty here. 40.000, that's peanuts for the WWE. And even if they would pay all the medical bills for ALL former employees, that still would be peanuts for them...
    Yes, they do something for a good cause every now and then, like Make A Wish. But they could to way more than that, especially for former employees.

    • @BEEyonced
      @BEEyonced 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference is Marty was devastated financially for life because of this accident he had least control over! Whenever he earns a few buck most all get transferred to Chuck Austin. I think it were 5 million. Marty earning 100.000 a year in his best years minus tax, living and travelling. Not more than 10.000 over at the end of the year. And the system would try to pull 40.000 out of you until your last breath honoring the Law Verdict. It makes no sense to work. If you don't work you on food stamps 3rd World Living condition. For what being an athlete, entertaining kids, this Chuck dude himself wasn't well enough trained to wrestle.
      The court verdict was as ridiculous just as locking Marty up for 20 yrs! Actually Marty would have been better off in jail and afterwards could somewhat rebounce even in a Security Job / Fast Food Job not going after each Penny you earn anymore.
      The worst you can ruin one's soul is totally unfair ruining a person financially after working maaany yrs his ass off! You get delusional as there is no way out. If you have no loving supporting family you're doomed! It's a wonder he's even alive. No way has he deserved this destiny.
      Marty was drinking like pretty much ANY man does.
      Shawn was mad lucky to get fully away from this incompetent jury. And not be ordered to pay half Marty's: 2.5 million. Shawn couldn't give that amount away neither even if his career had skyrocketed the same afterwards for 15 more years! But of course it wouldn't have cause this shit is ruining your thoughts permanently. No way he could have pulled it off! However to still go on with this in the back of your mind shows you the entire crazyness of this bizz! These guys have little escape options just as Military veterans returning from War ending up homeless in the street. No-one gives a fukk!
      The 28 million was a major verdict to pay for WWF back then to not struggle to bankrupcy, 3 million would have been fair enough. If Chuck had been paralyzed by some car accident from someone just not getting 500 bucks out of it'll be like that as well.
      As addicted as he is and often hard to understand his mumbling (esp for Non-English Native Speakers!) he nails it 1000% crystal clear what most don't understand what the law system is about and at the very end of the clip how unfair WWF has not covered his million percentage from this fukk verdict as well.
      Most esp with Vince's recent sexual misconduct settlements! How can Stephanie even appear in public? It would at least now be chump change giving Marty 5 million for the shit that ruined him for half his life and they are most responsible for... so that he even has a chance to rebounce in Pension life bis Last few years, not worrying foreclosure and homeless on the streets on the daily! One of the unsung tragedies ppl most marks are not even aware of cheaply dissing Marty. And for the record from start I was a Shawn fan. I started watching WWF late 1991!

      @BEEyonced ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@darrylskylar8757 I got news for you (in Shawn's TM phrase): EVERY Wrestler had... that's the fukkery of this industry!
      In NFL it took 50 yrs to detect smth like Brain Concussion Aftermath Damage. Now compare to Wrestling bumping their bodies/heads on the daily without any protection. At steel cages, metal stairs, through commentary table, TV cameras and all. Maybe not with full speed but still overall way more brutal!
      Now who are the dead wrestlers Iike British Bulldog and Ultimate Warrior while Marty and Shawn are at least alive. The image narrative is so ridiculous one sided, it shows the real parrot IQ of common ppl!
      Having a financial 'incident' which is and will remain you broke for the remainder of your life will fukk any soul. Even with no drug issues ever before.

    The scandal wasn’t the botched move. It was how The Rockers treated the guy after he was injured. He told Marty that he had a broken neck and they needed to stop the match - but because he was just a jobber, they ignored him, so they could get a clean finish. Which is ultimately what led to his paralysis. They were rolling him around and jumping on a guy with a broken neck

What is described is not a safe work environment and in my view the disclaimer deservedly means nothing. A dangerous move like that should have been practiced before the show, WWE should have checked Austin’s skills, there should have been doctor on site, there should have been a tap out signal etc. I don’t think Marty deserves the blame but he should be more understanding and sympathetic of what happened to Austin.
