roller bearing on that application seems wierd, most boats have plain bearings? bound to fail prematurely with out fresh grease

Its low speed moderately high loads and subject to the sort of forces you get on bycle and Motorcycle stearing head bearings encounter.. ie twisting ..pull push and turn ...so its cheap and cost effective .. A pair of Taper needle rollers would be optimal location and rotational wise.. but an oolitic bronze bush would also worl as long as its large enough and well greased.
Basicly 6 monthly or yearly greasing by injection or repacking any bearings. Lithium boat grease... boat trailer Axel grease also works. 😊

That bearing housing should have a grease zerk installed so that fresh grease can always be applied flushing out the old grease and giving the bearing 4 x the life.

To preserve the bearings again I think you need to put Zinc on the dry post part above the bearings to help preserve the bearings. May need Zinc below the water line too.

I remember installing my rudder on the way to launching after doing a refit in the boatyard in Ventura. Things do get hectic especially on a Friday afternoon! I forgot to seal the rudder mounting plate to the keel, just bolted it in place. When under way the stern dug in and the sea water came in at an alarming rate. Once I cleared the harbor entrance I pointed her down wind and shut off the engine. The stern came up a bit and I was able to remove the 4 bolts holding the mounting plate and get sealant applied to the top of the keel. Bolted the plate back in place and the sealant oozed out all the way around. No leaks!

Nice to have a proper rudder bearing but with no way to remove what a pain. If you can find the waterproof grease it really works and does not get washed out ! If not a grease nipple in the top cap with a relief port 180 deg away might allow occasional greasing!
Glad to see Karl getting done love , now we just need some for you❤❤❤

Based on the appearance of that dry rudder bearing, I would put in a Zerk fitting and grease it often. You may never have to change it again. It might take 30 minutes to do.

Hi Nike. just a little tip for you. Bearings are made from very hard material and can sometimes shatter when hit. I noticed at 3.32 that you didn't have any safety glasses on. I could be wrong but that bearing appears to be a taper-loc type with a taper on the shaft sleeve that matches a taper on the inside of the bearing. I was taught the easiest way to remove them is to loosen the retaining nut till the end of the nut is level with the end of the taper and then hit the nut toward the bearing. If there isn't already a grease nipple on the bearing support, It would be worth putting one there while it is apart so you can clean any drill shavings out. Also when looking for a non fluffy paint roller if you ask for one with a short "nap" pronounced nape in most English speaking places. I believe it is "der Flor" in German. It is great to see you making the effort to do a job properly.

Here's my two cents: Karl can't take care of himself so he needs the makeover. You on the other hand are a different story. Your combination of self-confidence + independence + salt air + sunshine + exercise + natural beauty + wonderful attitude toward life bump you quite a ways up the beauty chart. You smile is always a plus (and lights up your videos) and I'd be more than happy to buy you dinner someday should our paths ever cross. But not mentioned is your shorts; now THEY really need a makeover! Do you ever accidently put your foot through the wrong hole when getting dressed? Big hug from Texas!

You, like Karl never ask for some pampering and a bit of good loving care. Allow me to be a bit forward. You need to soak in a tub drawn for you with some epsom salts and it needs to be warm when you get in, but it has to grow hotter. It needs bubbles. This is important and if it's fragrant, that's good. When you get out, you need someone to wrap a terry towel bathrobe around you, and whisper in your ear, "you are loved". Then gently guided to the table where you can lay down with a nice crisp white sheet over you and just breathe for a few minutes. Roll over and find the place where you face can rest as the sheet is drawn down to your hips. A moment, then the warm hands covered in oil touch you back. Slowly moving up to your neck, the strong hands move your muscles to and fro in a gentle release and you let out a sigh. Over your shoulders, your lats, pushing up from your hips, each caress brings relief to the pains you didn't even know about. Then the sheet is withdrawn completely and you starle, but then you feel the massage moving up your legs, over the calf, up each thigh and all the trepidation falls away with the sheer warm comfort that flows from hands to body. You feel the sheet move up your body and a very gentle kiss, just on the nape of your neck, lets you know it's time to rest and then, get up to work on the next show.

Closest you get to a makeover is a wet sponge............and none the worse for it. Those bearings shouldnt fail like that, what if any type of grease was used, or is it the same old problem of dissimilar metals in contact with each other, in an electrolyte? Karl looking better for some TLC.
