  • From the moment we set foot on stage at the start of 2020, our mission was simple: to share music with a point to make about the world around us with audiences across the UK.
As a community of young people, we wanted to educate ourselves and open our ears and hearts in support of social justice and racial equality, understanding there is work to be done, but knowing that as individual musicians playing our part in a collective orchestral whole, every person has the power and responsibility to make a difference.
This magnificent orchestral piece, Mighty River, by Belize-born British composer, Errollyn Wallen was our musical starting point. Exploring the history of the slave trade in Britain, it has spirituals and gospel music at its core. Alongside musical learning, we took part in a series of eye-opening webinars with expert guest speakers to learn more widely about Black musicians in our art-form and racial justice initiatives emerging in classical music. Find out more about the project here: www.nyo.org.uk/mighty-river
Can you help us to keep delivering inspirational orchestral experiences to musicians who need them? NYO is a charity, and we are doing our best to continue to be a musical community at this time, powered by incredible teenagers who are dedicated to inspiring others through music. If you feel able to support NYO financially, we would be extremely grateful: www.bit.ly/PleaseDonate_NYO

That was wonderful! The music was gorgeous, and the video so brilliantly picked out the musicians one by one. Thank you for a great experience.

Heard a snatch of this on BBC Radio 3 in the car this afternoon, was impressed, and wondered what it was. On returning home, I checked it out and discovered this amazing composer Errollyn Wallen. Listening to the whole piece here on TH-cam, I think it is wonderful, a strange blend of more traditional symphonic music with arresting new harmonies and melodies. It also has a wonderful onward rhythmic drive, lyrical and giving prominence to solo parts in the overall ensemble. Fantastic. (and thanks again to BBC for introducing me to this - just what public service radio is meant to do)

I am a trumpet player, but I had never heard of this piece, nor the composer, until I heard it on the radio station WFMT in Chicago today. Brilliant writing on the part of the composer!!! Magnificent execution of the piece by the NYO as well!!! Awesome the way ALL the musicians are showcased in the video too!!!

The music is well written but mixing it with political views does nobody any favours.

@@helendavies1326 I'm afraid so. Music and politics normally finishes up in tears. Thanks for asking. 🙂
