Only just discovered this! How extraordinary it is! If that was 3 years ago why have we not heard it performed elsewhere - in City Halls for example? So exciting to know we have a Scottish-based composer who writes music of such quality, yet so interesting and - dare one say it - beautiful.
She grew up in the time when Boulez and all the Darmstadt minions were controlling things .That group held a vise on music most music in this cenury.Egon Wellescz has influenced many we are lucky that she also had Robin Holloway . She has her own voice and its just full of light, jazz and great ideas .The harmony will not scare anyone . I'm overjoyed to finally be hearing her works .Wonderful to hear her talk about the path of composing !
Astounding! The piece is open-hearted and so eloquent..As always, at a first hearing, the connections to other familiar works or styles will dominate ( I am hearing shadows of Elgar, Tippitt, Shostokovich... ), but the piece makes its own world with total assurance and persuasivness, full of feeling and without surplus trickery or bombast The soloist - who is this musician? Close your eyes and you are listening to Rostropovich in his prime. I have never ever heard such a beautiful cello sound in my life.... To all involved - so many thanks, you're all Totally Fab !
I'm amazed the opening cello solo entrance is 21minutes. Gorgeous glissandos in 27th minute! I must use this idea! Does the listener remember what the opening motif is? It makes me want to start a 7th cello concerto [Yes ,I've written 6 ]and piano and violin are my instruments !for only percussion(what I wanted to hear in the opening ) and winds no strings or brass . I'll call it an invention . It wont be 3 movements or will it be a full-fledged concerto. I better go and formally study with some knowledgable composers to take my work further ...
