Thank you for the great lecture! This is the explanation I was looking for. I've been trying to figure out how to control some parts of Reaper through a couple of M-audio midi keyboards.
kenny is there a way to make reaper ignore some specific note offs? i have a few transport buttons that are getting triggered twice so i can't asign it to play/pause for example cause it plays when i press it then pauses when i let go
Nice thanks for very good tutorial! But do you need to repeat the process when you turned off the laptop and move into a new venue? I mean every time you restart the laptop you need to remap the MIDI controls?
How to adjust an effect automation? Ex, a song that ends with a big reverb, the reverb only applies on the last 3 seconds of the song and gets bigger so the song "woush" into fade.
I put midi input on channel 1 and assigned sliders as you demonstrated (assigned to channel 2 and set the midi controller to channel 2) but instead of track volume, the pitch of the track is changed when I move the slider
I have a problem where my midi keyboard notes will trigger functions in my DAW (Reaper) like the pause button or the metronome, but I checked the actions and (while it looked like a few were there) not all of the things that the keyboard is triggering are in the list. I am quite confused. This hasn't happened to me before in my few years of owning Reaper.
Thanks for all the useful shortcut ideas! What I'm wondering is how you remember all these once you've created them. label your buttons? It seems like a controller with customizable screens per button would be ideal. More expensive though...
I think of shortcuts like learning an instrument. You need to 1) write it down somewhere handy like a desktop Tricks.txt notepad file/piece of paper, and 2) practice using it in a real work setting, so it becomes a neural pathway. Cant do too many at once. Just add them like this over time and you'll have dozens and dozens of epic shortcuts wired into your brain for fast work :)
Wow this is awesome thanks! When you set it up is it per project or can it be the default for any new/current projects? Is there no way to map your controller’s faders to 8 tracks, and then move left to right to the group of 8? Almost like octaves on a keyboard
Hey. This was very helpful but i still got a question. Is there an action to turn on/off repeat on the transport? I only found a toggle option and i dont wanna hold down the button all the time when wanting to to have the project repeat.
Hello Kenny ! Great tutorial ! Question to get the next level please. I have a M32 NI keyboard and because of how it is built, I use keys to « go to next/previous » track (and solo/mute selected track). Unfortunately, with this, I can’t play it (piano, drums…) without activating those actions. I tried something with Exclusive toggle, but doesn’t work. Any tips ?
great video. is there a way to save that mapping configuration in order to be the default? so i dont have to map all that again in every new project thanks
This can get confusing real quick, for one, you have to remember all theses settings which is not possible , so less is best imho. Another thing is, youll never know what "action" word to look up (aside from pan, volume etc) ..not realistic but the idea can be usefull in a limited situation
Hi, Kenny! Firstly, thanks for the lessons! Question: I'm setting shortcuts for live-looping purposes. That said, I would like to mute the pads in a way they don't play notes when I press them... Is there any way I can mute the pads so that they just make the action I assigned, without hitting any notes?
Is there also a way to set up the pads on a controller to control the Transport functions? I want to to start & stop recording, eg, using a pad when I’m playing guitar.
I love this! But is there a way to program an action to move when I play a specific note on the controller? I'd love to program Reaper to play or move to a specific marker when I play a specific note. Right now, it just sets to "MIDI Chan 1 Pitch," and the action engages no matter what note I play.
You can assign midi commands to actions in the actions menu. The same way you would change a keyboard shortcut. There’s an option in that pop up for midi learn.
Excellent tutorial. How does Reaper remember all the midi parameters that I taught it to learn. Does it remember every time that particular controller is hooked up?
Kenny, this might be a ridiculous thing to ask, but would you consider a video on optimizing your desk space for all these great controller options available today? I wish I had some way to keep a few of my surfaces & stream deck closer to my hands on the keyboard, rather than all over the desk.
This is mostly great, and mostly works, but for me, when I try to map the rotaries of a korg nano, no matter how I set it, it only goes on or off. Figuring on finding a used Nektar now
Those problems not because of the OS but your hardware . And yeah I'm using several apps and external controllers and not noticing real issues with latency
@@morizanova which hardware are you referring to? I have run my Motif ES7 direct usb to my PC/DAW and through a focusrite 6i6 with midi i/o and they both have about the same latency regardless of any settings or offset I employ. THe CPU may be the problem beinga 2010 Dell quad core i5-3330 cpu.
I just got my novation launchcontrolXL and am pretty happy with it. I was stuck until I added Device+Control in preferences and then everything worked as explained in this video.
hello , i struggle with the switch midi channel thing, i have a keylab essential mk3 and i know how to switch midi channel on the keyboard(midi ch button + keynote) but when i'm in the midi channel 3 on the keyboard and try to change my action list on reaper, it said midi chan 1 . So i don't know if it's my keyboard or my reaper but if someone can help me !
Some controllers need adjustment in their software editor . Not on the fly like arturia beatstep. Try and check if you can assign different midi channel for each bank in your editor
@@EricGoetzMusic perhaps, but it does not work very well, it only rewinds and does not stop until the end of the track or jumps 4 bars in one go. but thanks!
@@fishn2693 Ah bummer! Yeah, there's a lot about how actions and MIDI CC / Mouse gestures / Scroll wheels that I find very confusing. Man, the things in these videos are good... but the breaks in sentences really fucks with my ability to understand what's being taught. Like. I don't need. You to pause. So much.

I've watched almost 2 hours of tutorials but this is the first one that's shown me what I needed in less than 5 mins thanks!
1:45 for me! nice.
This is so useful. midi controls look confusing at first, but once you handle them, everything gets faster and easier.
This is SO USEFUL. Thanks for making it seem so straightforward.
Thank You for a clear, concise, accurate, no-filler-dialog tutorial!
Man, this video has just opened some serious doors to efficient workflow in Reaper for me. Much thanks.
The fact that you took the time to animate the reference graphics. Amazing.
This is amazing video also in that regard, that you show us what are actually important features to have an easy access to 🔥
Thank you Kenny.
Long overdue video imo. Needed to see this.
i was confused about how to do this and u made it really clear thanks

Thank you so much for this!! I was looking around FOREVER for a tutorial on setting up the custom knob/pad functions.
Este video vale su peso en oro
This video worth a million!
Thanks a million!!!!
Thanks for a great lesson!
Great video Kenny. How would I assign a knob on my midi keyboard to adjust (up and down) the volume of a selected item. Not the whole track.
Extremely useful, great lecture - thank you very much.
Thank you for relieving me of my confusion time and time again. I have no idea what I'd do without you kenny!
Wow, I had no idea you could do this. This will change my workflow immensely! Thanks!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much! Def the best explanation i´ve found! Clear and concise.
Rock and roll for everyone!!!
This will be a life-saver! You're the best Kenny!
I am learning so much from your channel. Thank you !!! !
Super useful video, thanks so much!
Good one! Is there a way to map knobs to draw envelopes? That would be a game-changer for me.

Hi Kenny, just to be sure: There is no parameter feedback to the controller, right? Meaning, I have to tick "soft takeover"?
Thanks!
How would this work with switching tracks of ampsims with a footswitch midi
What about using Bluecat Control? How would it be possible to use such a plugin within Reaper?

You should be able to either unmap or mute that control in whatever VST you're using.
Will this work with Akai MPC Studio MK2? Mpc Software is trash

It's saved with the Actions. It will be there even if you change controllers.
i believe it stores them in one of the .ini files in its resource directory, probably reaper-midihw.ini
