Maybe you are unaware but Sitka has many rain gear for many different scenarios. Their quiet jackets are the downpour and thunderhead. Those are quiet but aren’t for crazy relentless rain. The dew point is only made for pack ability and lightweight but isn’t the best. The best rain gear they sell is the cold front and storm front. These two are the same jackets on the outside except the cold front has an insulation liner that’s going to help keep you warmer. But these are their heavy duty rain jacket that’s suppose to be for rainstorms etc.
Thanks, John. Interesting info. I’m a wildlife photographer and am often out in fairly havy rain for hurs at a time. Have you used these items in those conditions and kept dry? I’m looking for a camo pattern rain jacket that’s quiet and super waterproof. Cheers
Thunderhead from Sitka is very quiet but isn’t the best for relentless rain. Any gear that is made to be quiet, will wet out in the long run. Anything that will be super waterproof, will be noisy cuss it’s gotta be more plastic. You just gotta choose what you need, the super quiet or super dry. You can’t have both. You can have little more towards each direction, which a lot of these companies make jackets that fill that gap. But even the best jackets from Sitka, isn’t going to be super quiet and super dry. Their $700 jacket is kind of quiet and super dry, but it’s still a little noisy just not as noisy as a plain plastic jacket.
Yep. They all wet out in the end. But some that do well in rain are better than others on the quiet front. The rubber poncho is super quiet and 100% waterproof, but I wouldn’t want to wear a jacket made of it due to breathability. Cheers
@@00ninja00 Yes, Sitka has some great gear, but I expect more at that price point. The NewView rain jacket performed pretty well at a much lower price than the Sitka Gear. I'm not saying that it is just as good, but it seems like Sitka should be ten times better if it is 10 times the price. The happy medium is the Cabelas MT050.
Kuiu Chugach TR on sale I was able to ge the jacket and pants for around $450 to my door. Expensive YES but this is something like a good scope or good Bino's a buy once cry once thing. If you spend a little $$$ one time you will save your money in long run if you take care of your stuff. I've run Cabela's rain gear in various iterations for many years and its worked great until it doesn't. I have found spending a little more money for initial investment will save me money in long run. The Kuiu on sale was almost same price as the Cabela's stuff so spent about $50 more for the Kuiu. Also one thing you can do to help extend the life of your rain gear is first NEVER put it in the dryer but also once a year I wash it in Nikwax specialty wash which puts the DWR treatment back on the rain gear. If your breathable rain gear wets out then your DWR is gone and your rain gear isn't working anymore. Use this wash and it costs about $25 for the specialty wash and the treatment well worth the money to maintain your rain gear.
Ya it is important to me too but sometimes you have to sacrifice some noise for total waterproof stuff. I have the Cabelas gear you showed and it worked great but now stitching is letting go. The Chugach TR is noisier the MT050 but much quieter then Sitka. Now there are different kinds of options for Kuiu stuff and some are extremely noisy but that stuff is made for extreme Mt hunting not stand sits for white tails. My issue is I use mine for Turkey, deer, bear and moose here in Maine and also our woods are brutal on clothing so need a little more rugged stuff. I trade a bit of noise for more durable and also high end stuff has heat dumps which becomes invaluable when tracking for miles if I’m not just setting rain gear aside and getting wet but staying warm with all wool clothing.
👍 Yes. I’ve looked at the Kuiu gear. I run a Kuiu 7800 Pro backpack to carry my camera gear when on the trail unsupported and it doubles as a kayak pack and checked luggage on international trips. Great pack. So I trust the Kuiu stuff. For absolute waterproofness in hours of torrential BC rain, I have a super lightweight rubber poncho. It’s quiet and you can just lift it for a few seconds to get rid of moisture. Cheers T.
Yes the MT050 stuff is quietER, the problem is, that the outer shell is "fleece-like" and it holds the water and gets soaked, and then it "leaks" So, it's not, imo very good "rain gear" It will work when it's lightly sprinkling, but as soon as the rain becomes miserable, your Cabelas MT050 jacket will give out on you, and you'll have a long wet and cold hike back to the truck ... cussing that D**N jacket the whole way.

Yes I have. For quiet, I use the Cabelas MT050. There is a link below the video.
Thanks, John. 👍

Excellent advice! For me, the most important thing for hunting rain gear, next to it being waterproof, is that it is quiet!

Sounds really swishy/rustly from the video like any other rainjacket.... I thought it was supposed to be quiet?
Yes, the Sitka Dewpoint is very noisy. The Cabela's MT050 is very quiet.
@@Deerhuntingguide Oh my mistake, I can hear the difference @3:00 ! I got them mixed up. I'm definitely getting the MT050 then
