I love the character of the 600 cc inline-4 engines. But my bike is a V-twin.
Nothing can match the power of an inline-4, they are awesome engines, but the drawbacks (purchase price, insurance cost, comfort) led me to buy a V-twin from the 650 class.
Still, if you asked me what my dream bike would be, it's either an inline-4, or a triple like the 675.
Practical considerations led me elsewhere but that doesn't change how awesome those bikes are.

In fact you can get the tension near spot on factory spec by using a 5mm hex wrench LOL..these engine are just all that. I have to say owning a 2005 Daytona 955i which was purchased off Ebay purely to flip and make cash was shockingly great. These inline 4, triples, etc will be around...the market is not what it was, but for used in lines it's strong. Newbies grow rapidly tired on parallel twins and want more power ..Want something 'insurable' super fast, great sound 'triple howl' less than 998cc buy a used low mileage Daytona 955i for a couple grand and surprise yourself ..

I love the MT07 but quickly wished I had listened to the sales guy that tried to tell me to buy a MT09 based upon my riding experience at that time. I’ve progressed a ton with the MT07 and refined my riding skills faster with it than maybe would have with the MT09. This proclamation is spoken like a true “noob.”
First of all, in-line fours do not have to be high-revving screamers to achieve decent torque/hp rates. Take the Bandit series with the 1200 that makes 106hp at a paltry 8000rpm and 71 ftlbs of torque at 6000 rpm (with much of that torque 3/4 of the way there at 3000 rpm.) Why do you think they are a favorite of drag racers?
Meanwhile, take a spin on the new GXS-1000GT sport tourer and call me in the morning.
Second, the notion that in-line fours (and sport bikes in general) will fall by the way-side is strictly based on the current ADV fad.
All I have to do is look out in the office parking lot to know where this is going…there’s the totally tricked out BMW GS-1250 parked next to the Desert Eagle Hummer, neither of which has seen so much as a gravel driveway.
Lastly, MotoGP has about 113 million fans that also disagree with your lame prediction.
We’re you at Laguna Seca this month? Which was more exciting/popular? Battle of the Twins or the Superbike race?
    I rest my case.

Manufacturers are realizing that they don't need 4 cylinders to make a bike that is smooth and powerful. This is why 4 cylinder track bikes are still being produced but a lot less street bikes are 4 cylinders. There is a bigger possible profit margin when making a 2 cylinder bike vs 4 cylinders. There are a lot less parts to manufacture

No wanky electroics, no compromises and no excuses on power. In the low ranges it doesnt scare the shit out of you like the 1299 paigale which was barely sensible power on the track , let alone on public Rd, ANYONE can get on the 2007 blade and feel safe provided they dont wind it open. Doing so you exparience a brutal non linear power delievery that you can actually avoid if you want for round town riding .. unlike the 1299 especially. I got my first four cyl in 1978 (a GS-1000 Zuki). Pretty much every bike I've owned since then has been a four, at least up to about three or four years ago. When I came to Spain I got to rethinking my motorcycling needs. First I got a R1150 GS (that I could restrict for an A2 license). I tried to like it. I really did. I spent money on it. But within days of getting my A license I plopped €20k down for a new 1290 Super Adventure S. Then I traded the 1150 for a K1200 GT with a friend for Sunday rides with my wife.
A couple weeks ago I was putting down some miles (or kilometers) on the freeway (or autopisa) and I realized that I'd while the Super Adventure is a great bike I don't really like the vibration of a twin, even with counterbalancing. So I took the BMW out and yeah, even though it's fifteen years old it runs smoother and is more comfortable when cruising. Possibly not as smooth as my old Ninja 14 but pretty smooth. (Why they didn't give it an overdrive sixth gear I haven't a clue but that's another subject.)
Yeah, sure you can make better peak power with a four than an engine with fewer cylinders but that's not always what's important. Inline fours have other desirable features than just peak power.
So now I'm putting a little time and elbow grease into the BMW. Who knows, I might take it out for rides on days other than Sundays and without my wife on back. It's old and it's heavy, but it's comfortable too.
It's great that we have more engine layout choices and the twin in my KTM sounds great with a PipeWerx can. But I don't see the inline four dying just yet.

In line 4s are honestly my favorite bikes. High speed track riding with my 2004 R6 I fixed up is the most fun I've had on 2 wheels. But it cost $200 for a day and doesn't even include the rubber I burn.
It feels like I could either go on track once a month or once a year fly to Japan and rent a fun motorcycle for a week.
If track days were cheaper I'd fix up an R1, but it's just so damn expensive to ride the thing properly on weekends. Just wish track days were cheaper.

I truly love my two V4 motorcycles by Honda. I’ve been riding since the early sixties and have never bought a motorcycle for transportation. They have always been used as a toy. I did ride the motorcycle to work as well but was I really saving money with my cars sitting at home? I just love the feeling of being out in the elements and an adrenaline junkie. Being a pilot I’ve always said, riding a motorcycle is the closest thing to flying without leaving the ground. Ride on!

Sure, there were some adrenaline junkies, but most riders I know did it because a car was too expensive to buy and own. I'm surprised you didn't mention emission regulations... ah well... I guess being in USA you don't have as strict emissions regulations as the EU's Euro standards, so it's understandable.
Long story short, when the Euro 5 standard got introduced, it required a ~41% reduction in Unburnt Hydrocarbons (UHC) emissions, which come mainly from trapped fuel around the piston head gaskets, so if you have more pistons => more unburnt fuel on the exhaust. This was a huge limiting factor for making a road legal bike for the EU market.
This is why instead of having sport engines with 4 cylinders they went to sport models with 2 but with bigger bores, the overall surface reduction from less number of pistons meant a lot less unburnt fuel. But there was a problem, Inline 2s, the 180/360 degree ones back in the day, were ok, but for lower CC applications, once they started replacing higher CC 4 piston engines with Inline 2s, they had a big problem with secondary imbalances of the engine.
This why in 2015 manufacturers developed the new 270 crossplane crankshaft, which became standard issue, because it fixed secondary imbalances of the engine thus allowing higher CC engines to be made, which would produce less emissions, and thus be able to replace the Inline 4s of the time.
Now that being said in 2024, out of 16 Honda models on their site, 10 of them are Parallel twins, and only 6 are still with 4 cylinders.
The iconic Honda Hornet series they reintroduced in 2023.... is a 750cc, 270 Parallel twin, lower revving SOHC!, when for 20+ years that series and the CB series were always Inline 4s, higher revving DOHC... Hopefully this doesn't mean the CB series is going the twin piston route..... but when looking at the overall picture.... I don't know what to say :(.

It's hilarious how this video came out when I was shopping for a replacement for my second car. Coming from cruisers, (Harley Davidson) I knew little about metrics. A buddy immediately pointed me toward an FZ-07 and it clearly makes sense why. I've had it for about a month and I can't stay away from the sound of the CP2 and the full Yoshimura exhaust.

The four cylinder Gilera predates the MV Augusta by a few years. The late 1940s saw development of the poor handling in line fours. The Benelli followed in the 1960s.

Gr8 topic. Sport bikes never made much sense but in the 90's and 2000's it was supposed to mean you were a "real rider" that was skilled enough to handle "power". The 1929 V-twin Indian for $278 is about $4,700 in 2022. Prices have gotten out of hand. I've been rockin' an NC700X with 48 bhp stock. Smooth and a good on gas and capable in the corners with good ergos.

It pains me, but I agree. I just bought my dream bike, 2003 Hayabusa and wouldn’t trade it for ANYTHING in the world. But I recognize that my taste is sentimental and very different from the average rider. I recognize that it has way more power than I’ll ever use and it’s not comfortable for more than a few hours at a time. But it’s my “preference” and more people are going for comfort and looks. While I think the Busa looks unique and damn beautiful, a LOOOT of people disagree. And that’s fine. But I’m kind of afraid once this one dies, I’ll have a hard time finding another one cuz they’ll eventually get discontinued.

Although I would hate to see the inline fours go (I have an old Kawasaki police bike), I can understand why they may be going away.
Engine design and manufacturing have gotten to the place where a parallel twin (or three-cylinder) can put out enough horsepower and torque to rival--if not surpass--the inline fours from "back in the day". However, just like cars where V8s just seems natural, I feel that way about an inline four on a Japanese bike; you kind of expect it.
If I had to replace my bike with a new bike, I probably would go for the Kawasaki Z900.
