Allegedly, Ed Annunziata made the game extremely difficult because he was worried about renters finishing it too quickly. I'm guessing they were able to back off on the difficulty for the JP-export since game rental is more or less illegal there.
Japanese games tended to be easier because renting games was illegal in Japan, so most people who were playing the game had purchased the game. North American games were harder because game companies knew that most people would either start out or _only_ rent games, so they made them harder to ensure they would have to rent them more than once.
@@Mia-dt3gl hahaha yeah I realize that now. I think this whole myth of Japanese versions being harder started with the original Super Mario Bros 2 not being released outside of Japan until it's appearance on the SNES Super Mario Allstars cartridge.
@@joeyjo-joshabadu9636 Apparently the story behind that is that when Nintendo of America got the 2nd Mario game the guy who tested the game legitimately got angry with the game and rage-quit it. Apparently this caused Nintendo to panic because this guy LOVED video games, and they felt his reaction to the game would be mimicked in multiple households across North America. And since Nintendo had just single-handedly saved the video game market in North America, this wasn’t a risk they were willing to take by releasing the game. So they took Doki Doki Panic, swapped out sprites, and released that instead.
Wait, I'm confused. At the end when you get yourself eaten a few times, it sends you straight back to the Vortex Queen level. Why isn't it sending you back to the Stomach level?
Maybe the Vortex Queen’s body is the entirety of the machine. Part organism, part machine. It would explain why her head is the only thing we see of her.
So unfair... in the American release when you get eaten by the Vortex Queen you have to redo "Welcome to the Machine" which is a much longer level. >_
probably is the stomach of a robot
@@reinaroja7326I think you meant to reply this to the other comment speculating this was inside the Vortex Queen.
This is the Vortex Queen's stomach?? Weird... Well, at least it ain't an auto-scroller.
I don't know how man times I tried to find footage of this level, thanks you... I just eliesed the video is 12 years old
Wait a minute, the Japanese version of the hardest game ever made was actually easier than the North American one?
There are many examples like that were either the Japanese version was easier or the US version was easier.

The Stomach is in the Japanese versión.
Cool music.

I think he escaped a fraction of a second before losing the rest of his health
Obviously way easier than Welcome to the Machine. Also obviously way less dope of a level.
So... There's no stomach
Weird. Why is her stomach mechanical?

Probably influenced by HR Giger, who popularized the concept of Bio-Mechanical aliens
im glad i never mades it to this level woulda had nightmares for dayss
Dude I’ve never made it to this level and this game still gave me the heebie jeebies
