Never actually reached this level naturally, when I was a kid. My friend and I were messing with the password screen and put in all "N"s, and that brought us to The Machine. It was NUTS, especially considering we never got far enough to learn anything about the aliens. We just thought it was a game about swimming in the ocean, and then THIS.
Yeah, it's absolutely brutal. This level beat me as a kid. After months of trying, I just sat and kept brute forcing random level code attempts until I chanced upon the one for the final level. I still haven't beaten it legitimately.

I would really, really liked to know what the f the devs were thinking about. :D Actually Ecco would have been a really good game if it was a tad easier. The insane difficulty just kills every fun part of it, I think. Maybe it would have been too short then, but most of the players never got past the Undercaves anyway. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were only a tutorial to this game (I have finished both). I have finally reached this level, and currently banging my head against it.
This level was always horrible, but I loved it for it's difficulty, look, and music. When I was little, it was the biggest achievement for me to have beaten it. Now, all these years later on the 360 and emulator (no clue what came of my Genesis) it's still difficult, but just as awesome.

I was stuck again on the last prehistoric level for a couple years (kept trying occasionally until I figured it out). I'm glad they made it as difficult as they did; I needed a good challenge. Currently playing again on an emulator and avoiding the temptation to use save states!
I payed this game on Mega CD when I was 12 thinking it was going to be easier than Ecco 2, which I already beated when I was 9. Good lord Jesus, this machine is a way worse than the new machine on Ecco 2, and the music in the Mega CD version is awesome but fucking god it made you so tense.
Tim de schipper OMG, have you played the Sega Gamegear version? This level is even harder in that one! I never beat it, I just fiddled with the level codes until I accidentally entered one that took me straight to the Vortex Queen. XD
you evil cheater! all the horrors when i wuzz a kid... i skipped school for this :D (thats not true) i know a guy who had the GG version, i wuzz like: NEVER lol just give me the power to see me trough the day, thank you oh lord jezus! did i wasted my youth on this game? a solid YES
This does look a lot like his style : ) The xenomorph like aliens, the mechanical background (like the cover for Brain Salad Surgery) etc. The music is atmospheric and ambient. Kinda like Pink Floyd in their space rock/psychadellic days.
To this day I've never beaten this level XD urgh so close to finishing the game! Doesn't help my mega drive controllers are barely functional these days. :(
Just sheer endurance, 4:10 is a severe brown trousers moment and I don't get the transition to the final boss area but this whole game was a bit... WUH??! :P
Sega CD version has checkpoints and new levels. try that one. and i got to the lagoon till the sea leeches scared me so bad i didnt play the game for a year as a kid XD i did beat this game at 7 though :3

Trust me, my friend. Even if 8 years has passed... What you are seeing is an already broken man that has burned The Machine onto his retinas, onto his corneas, onto his brain stem, all the way to his very soul. A perfect run like this will take you hours and hours of failures until you can consistently do it in a one sitting. Talking out of experience, because I had the displeasure to complete this game.

Around 2:40, from a non-gameplay point of view, there's just this dolphin lasering the fuck out of EVERYTHING. The Vortex guys must be terrified.

One of the hardest games I ever played. Just BRUTAL in places, with an awesome memorable and haunting soundtrack.
5:48 is an unexpected jump-scare. It’s like The Machine tried to quickly crush you before you could escape.
