    the reason it’s taking GRRM so long to write is for each book he has to write two versions: one for the general public and its companion ‘book ‘that is completely unspoken, composed purely of subtext, and only capable of being translated by Preston reading between the lines.

    • @millibillionth
      @millibillionth 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I don't think George plans on simply giving away the answers, because that would negate all the trouble he had concocting these careful narratives that read mostly like harmless expositions with odd, unexpected turns, and yet have in them the necessary elements for you to make the connections and piece the events together.
      He also probably intentionally makes it so the events could have multiple causes. It seems to me that there is nor will there ever be a definitive answer to them - leaving the intriguing possibilities open forever, which might be more interesting to him as an author of a fantasy drama as it instigates the imagination and leaves you wondering about the story, forever unable to pin down the limits of the narrative he created.

    Huh, I'm gonna be honest, I never thought about the drugging of Jon bit, I distinctly remember reading the pages Jon was stabbed, being struck dumb, then instantly trying to remember if I'd even read a mention of Jon stretching his hand, I thought he was clumsy due to his hand growing stiff without stretching, but now the idea he was drunk and half asleep explains more than everything that was strange in the chapter

    • @winterthekid
      @winterthekid 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      the stiffness is brought on by the quick blood loss! It's all there in the text, just the previous paragraph; I don't understand the necessity to look elsewhere! GRRM can be specific and precise in very few words; I don't think he's trying to mislead us!

      @ exactly! being that the neck is a very delicate part of the body and that the arteries pass trough it just under the skin, it's more than likely that Wick's dagger caught him good!
      If it were only a surface wound the blood wouldn't flow that quickly trough his fingers when he touches the neck! Unfortunately it seems it is truly a bad situation!
      Anyways, the description of how Jon loses his ability to move quickly is consistent with blood loss; if you ever cut yourself and lost some blood you know that it's true!

    One very minor correction Preston: despite what video games would have us believe, spider webs are not particularly flammable normally. Easily destroyed by flames, yes, but feeding the flames? Not so much. The exception would be that it is possible for dust gathered on old webs, as one would expect cobwebs to have, can be flammable. So you're not necessarily wrong in your conclusion, but in the way you stated the support.

      “Fire & Blood: Volume I” is available November 20. It will cover roughly the first 100 years of Targaryen rule in a lot more depth. Preston has already gotten a good amount of material from other prequel novels like the Dunk & Egg novellas, The Rogue Prince, The Princess & The Queen, and The World of Ice & Fire. I’m sure he will get some stuff from F&B as well.
      I listened to a reading of a pre-released excerpt (read on TH-cam by Rawrist) about good Queen Alysanne. That one small sample has already revealed that dragons either can’t or won’t fly beyond the Wall. Either that or it’s just Alysanne’s dragon, Silverwing, but I highly doubt it.

    The Freys were not outnumbered nearly that much at the Red Wedding. Per the wiki, the Bolton and Karstark forces alone equaled the number of Northerners and Rivermen loyal to Robb, and that is before you consider the Freys.

  • @psevdhome
    @psevdhome 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    The parallel between Jon's and Robb's death made me think of Ned's death. Jon and Robb had direwolves that they bonded with that were from a pack of pups whose mother was killed by a stag. Now it made me wonder if the father of those pups is still alive. Now granted, the mother wolf is dead to symbolize the Starks being harmed by the stags of Baratheon so the mother wolf isn't that important and the father is not mentioned at all. But still it makes me think maybe in the end Ned's ghost is put to rest if his spirit has become a restless ghost. Symbolically he already is as his spirit is never laid to rest at Winterfell but it makes me wonder if his spirit is also still out there.
    To make a different point, we all make a big deal about how Robert caused the death of Ned, but we can't exclude the other Baratheon brothers from the equation. It was Stannis' investigation with Jon Arryn that caused Ned to discover the Lannister treachery and it was Renly who suggested the coup (to benefit himself, well his Tyrell allies, I've come to view Renly as the Tyrell's patsy, since the real plotter was Loras). So Ned interacted (directly or indirectly) with all the Baratheons.

  • @daimengwang768

    Thanks Preston for this amazing theory.
    A few questions:
    1. How does it go with your pink letter theory videos? In those videos you theorize that Mance Rayder sent the pink letter as a signal to Tormund. Mance's plan is to blow the horn of winter and "awaken" all giants to allow a wildling/giant takeover of the wall. (part of the reason why Wun Wun went nuts) So we have two master plans on a collision course? Who do you think has the upper hand in this case, Mance or Bowen?
    2. How come Melisandre knows nothing about this? I know she can be imprecise from time to time. But I find it hard to believe that she knows nothing about a red wedding 2.0 happening under her nose.

    • @williamjameshoffer4405

      One thing I enjoy about Preston's vids is how he brings to attention multiple conspiracies tend to be Afoot simultaneously in The Song and how those conspiracies can work in concert... or in opposition.
      Plus that whole "regicide vs assassination" theme that keeps happening. I think, in the chaos of Wun Wun, it would be fairly easy to have Selyse believe that Jon's death was intended for HER and thus set the Queen's Men against the Northmen and Free Folk, in addition to everyone reacting to the attack on Jon by The Watch.

    One thing I have always enjoyed about your videos and theories, is how you put forward very rational possibilities, but on the other side of the coin, if you do provide something that's more of a 'crackpot' theory, you give evidence as to why it *could* be a possibility, while also acknowledging that it's also not all that rational. I leave most of these videos convinced that this is really what's going to happen, and there are also some instances where I too have made the joke that I'm going to need to put on my tinfoil hat, if the video in particular really is out there, but you never just blindly state that this is fact, or going to happen, that's why I love coming and watching these videos and theorising and looking deeper into the story, it's kinda like we're all just in it together, just waiting for those last two books to see what the hell we were missing, and what we (I say we, you, Preston) noticed and guessed right. Thank you for the videos, man, they really do make my evenings when I get to watch them, with a fresh supply of tinfoil juuust within reach, just in case I need it.

    Is there any possibility that Stannis will take the Iron Throne? One reason, Stannis seems more likely than Cersei to not only burn the Sept of Baelor, but not have any outcry against Cersei over it. Another reason, Stannis' lack of heirs, Shireen's poor health, the Florents' or the combination of any those factors would force him to legitimize Robert's bastards paralleling Aegon IV legitimizing his bastards and George did say in an interview that all of Robert's bastards will try to claim the throne. The third reason, Stannis' arc seems to parallel Richard III, an unpopular prince who has his nephew declared bastards, brings order to the North and is killed at the field of battle--Stannis has already done the first two things.

    • @Vossenator

    That was pretty convincing overall. I was just gonna point that the Wun Wun part was a flaw, but if the other part covers it, I'll wait and see. Another thing is that the Shieldhall strikes me as damp and not flammable AT ALL, in spite of the cobwebs (which are not all that flammable as you make them to be).

Now I get the feeling it'll be the aftermath of a massacre. And I have never been more pumped for Jon's resurrection. If he does become a crueler man in a similar manner to Lady Stoneheart, finding out just how in depth his betrayal was could drive him to be extremely vengeful.

    When you brought up Mance listening in on Bowen's conversation and Bowen's reaction to it I had a bit of a personal revelation. So I have always believed that Mance wrote the pink letter, but his reasons for doing so did not fully make sense. I am beginning to believe that Mance DID overhear something about Bowen's conspiracy and that the pink letter was written specifically to push Bowen over the edge. I'm sure that everyone else already knew this, but hey, pretty cool nonetheless.

    I'm sure you've already heard this but silk isn't actually that flammable, compared to other fabrics it's among the most flame resistant. It's like hair, it will burn if you throw it in a already burning fire, but it isn't very combustible. Also spiders web isn't dense enough to work well as tinder for setting fire thick wooden walls.
    One can argue that GrrM doesn't know this and intends silk to be a big fire hazard, but he does seem to put thought into these things so I don't think so.

    A little detail I love about this is the conspirators actually seeming to have a lot of respect for Jon's fighting ability. Jon seems to underrate himself as a fighter. While he does practice basically all the time, he doesn't seem to remark on his ability once he stops using his advanced training to bully new recruits, choosing to train and befriend them instead. The only time we really get a serious measurement of just how good Jon's gotten is when he spars with another reputable fighter in the watch, and Jon absolutely obliterates him, as his mind wanders and he gets angry. Others had to intervene to get Jon to stop despite his opponent yielding.
    And even assuming Jon was actually drugged, if I remember right the first man to attempt to stab Jon gets stopped easily. Jon grabs his wrist and to intercept. It's only because there were so many assailants that he was taken down. It makes you wonder if they would have had any chance against him if he was sober. Let alone what would have happened if Ghost had been with him. Grey Wind fought in full pitched battles all the time, and Robb even regretted bringing his direwolf into battle because Grey Wind had lost all fear of men, meaning Robb was the only one who could even somewhat control him. Ghost is the most battle seasoned direwolf remaining in the story, and if Grey Wind is any indication, unless you've got a spear or you've got some distance with a bow or crossbow, Ghost is pretty much unstoppable.

    At the red wedding the Boltons and Freys did outnumber the other northern forces. It's says in ASOS that only about 3500 of Robb's forces tfrom the whispering wood remain, and Bolton killed off almost all the other northern forces that were with him in the riverlands. The starks were outnumbered about 2 to 1. The idea of a handful of stewards overwhelming hundreds of battle-hardened wildlings and queensmen isn't comparable. And wouldn't the wildlings have left the hall with Jon to see wun wun?

    So is the comparison of Robb and Jon saying their direwolves' names when they die used as a callback from the stabbing to the Red Wedding? Or is it something more? If it's more, then Robb and Jon have the same initial fate - warging into their companions. Robb is extinguished when Grey Wind is put down, but Ghost is still a wild card and is very much alive.
    With the similarities, what does the future have in store? A Red Wedding repeat or a subversion of that expectation? Logistically I can't imagine the storyline at the Wall simply finished, but I suppose there was a similar feeling at the Twins?
    Also, can someone warg when they're drugged/drunk like that? The show needs to end already so GRRM can release the next book already lol

So much, Jon commands to give him mulled wine and put to bed. Maybe they were more than just friends? That would certainly make Alf of Runnymudd hate Jon.
