Is it possible that because Rickard and Brandon died at the same time no one told Ned about the dark secrets of the Stark family? There are often mentions that Ned wasn't trained to rule.
The story of the rat cook always reminded me of bloodraven. Killing a guest under his roof, transformation into a rat and bloodraven's slow transformation into a weirwood, the rat being albino.
And of course Alysanne's struggles with the northern lords to give up the New Gift to the Night's Watch, to end the right to the first night and to end the sacrifices are all in parallel to Dany's difficulties in abolishing slavery in Essos. That's the part that really makes this one seem very probable. I'm generally not on the PJ train, but this time, I was just checking stuff off on my list one after the other. Solid analysis.
and we wonder why grrm takes so long to write these books. if half of Prestons theories are true (pun intended), it would be surprinsing that he ever got one done after the first... fun theory, thanks Preston!

@@hobbes1887 Actually I think this is more complex than Tolkien‘s world. Or am I wrong? Well maybe it isn‘t more in terms of history and sheer mass, but it is in terms of interwoven complexity, foreshadowing and coherence in general, isn’t it?

I was just listening to this again and only payed attention to the detail about wells as places of sacrifice this time around. In our Finnish folklore, wells were not a place of sacrifice. But there were some elements about wells that fascinate me regarding asoiaf. Wells would have pikes in them. Pikes are a type of fish that eats carrion and other fish. They used to put pikes in wells to eat any trash, animals or food that fell into a well so the water would not be tainted with rotting material, thus requiring a new well to be dug. Possibly for this reason the pike was also considered a psychopomp: a servant of the gods who would take the souls of the dead to the underworld. So I'm not saying GRRM was aware of any of this, but rather that our beliefs might be associated with some broader ancient common themes about wells connecting to sacrifice and death that GRRM is also aware of. Also in another interesting mythological parallel our national hero Väinämöinen seems to be associated with Orpheus the singer. Both of them visit the place of death (Hades and the North, a place of the dead in Finnish mythology). Orpheus to retrieve his wife, Väinämöinen to create and then steal the Sampo. BOth quests fail and at the end they both play a sweet song that saddens all those who hear it. Väinämöinen even plays his song on the kantele a Finnish harp, made from the jawbone of the giant pike of the Underworld, that he killed while escaping.
There has to be a connection here with the Night's Watch vow, of fathering no sons. When were these vows first made? After the Lord Commander Night's King's rule? Maybe as a way to "starve" the Others? Or did it happen when the Wall switched from taking men of noble houses to taking criminals? Great video.
Your videos are infinitely better than the last season of Game of Thrones, and they have been responsible for fueling my love of GRRMs universe and works. Thanks for another great video and cant wait for the next one!
Glad we're getting to the genetics of the Starks, always wondered why there was such an insinuated burden of incest among the Targaryens but not for the Starks.
WTF Preston?!!!!! We the old Republic need more of these videos from you. ;) Some of these themes are revisited but to know you're still out there is a gift. Thank you
The tales of the nightfort being largely centered around children being taken by monsters, point to the fact that... the Old Nan was telling stories to scare children! Let's think a little bit inside the box. Though, the overall theory makes sense and I think you will convince me with the genetic analysis in part 4.
This is one of the best videos you've done in the last year. Sometimes I really wish George would watch your videos. Where you compared the events past the wall reform and compared them to present time events it blew my mind. Obviously the Blackwood marriage was a big deal, and ive always wondered what caused the wildlings to attack the wall in the past. I really feel like you've got this one right and im excited to see the next video.
I was always confused by the story about the thing that came in the night, because why were there so many kids at the wall? I’m sure younger boys are useful for chores and squires, but they’re not really referred to as children within universe. Having actual children around doesn’t make sense because they wouldn’t be useful, if anything they would be a burden on the night swatch.
Random thought. House Ryswell sigil is a horse and Bittersteel had a sigil similar to the House Bracken sigil a horse. Is it possible house Bracken comes from a branch of the Ryswell? Like the Greystarks and Karstarks. If so what implications does this have in regards to the Blackwood who were once in the north. Is it possible that the Blackwood are a branch of the Starks and thats why a marriage to them was acceptable to Lord Stark of year 131? Is the Blackwood vs Bracken really a convoluted continuation of Stark vs Ryswell? Especially considering in the intermarriage of Blackwoods and Brackens and how in a way they are really just one house similar to the Targaryens and the Velaryon, and it's possible Starks took Ryswell wives after taking the north from the barrow kings. I'm not sure what my question is. Please help. Great video, eagerly awaiting conclusion.

I don't know if there's any evidence of a direct connection but I believe the direwolves stop being seen around the same time (according to Theon in Bran I) as good Queen Alysanne's stay at Queen's crown
Preston, in this video you again mention Addam of Hall, how is that bastard able to become a dragon rider if the special dragon gene is passed down through X chromosome according to your dragon gene theory?
