Anyone else hear a small popping sound when tightening? My torque wrench is 33Nm+ so I only hand-tightened with the wrench in the same orientation as the video. Didn’t think I twisted too hard, but I’m also a climber with strong forearms so “finger tight” might mean something different to me. No visible cracks. I’m hoping it was just the metal brackets rubbing against the edge of the glass, which is rough.
Minutes after I posted this a neighbor got home and said he had a smaller torque wrench. I was just under 2.5Nm but even when tightening it a little more my neighbor and I heard the sound even before the ratcheting torque wrench clicked. What the heck is that? I worry I unseated the adhesive for the glass to the frame or something. Tesla has no customer service so no idea who else to talk to.
Don’t worry, as long as you didn’t over tighten, all should be fine. I got some ‘sounds’ when I fitted mine. Just the way it is I think. You’re right, as a climber, don’t judge your ‘finger tight’ on anyone else’s scale 😂
Out of precaution we took it in and the person said they used to do mobile installs and heard it often. Nothing was over-torqued. They really should warn people in the instructions!
My Model S is more challenging. There’s barely any space. You have to wiggle around. The plastics tool slipped while I was inserting the screw & the glass cracked

Best video I've seen on this subject
No nonsence, well explained, … good tip, great idea about using the torque-measuring device!! That takes away the stress :)
Glad it was helpful!
great job! perfect timing on the video as I am just ordering mine now. Thanks a lot!
Thank you! Great video.
Hey mate, I am unable to find the Rack system that you have, could you share link for the same.
You can buy via the Tesla store online or via your app 👍🏽
range impact?
its less of an issue these days. on older cars the glass alignment is terrible.
Great video, big thanks 🙏
With just the empty bars, can you hear extra noise when driving?
Not really. It’s there a bit, but you have to listen for it. I’m just keeping them on for the summer.
Wow thank you for this
Which model of Thule box fits Tesla OEM racks?
2.5 foot pounds or newton's of force?
You notice any wind noise
Tiny amount if any 👍🏽
Hi Steve, what's the size of the hex bit you are using with the torque wrench? Is it metric or imperial? Many thanks!

The torque for this one 2.5 nm-3.5 NM maximum
Very interesting. Thanks! So sorry to hear about your wrapping business failure (I laughed so much that I almost dropped my coffee!) 😂🤣😂
😂
“Let’s get cracking”
Casually adds in lets get cracking 😂
What brand are the roof racks?
Tesla OEM (made for them by Yamika)
@@SteveJulien ok great thank you

Simple, is definitely not! But safe, I agree it is if doing right.
As with the tow bar, the Tesla “solution” is far from optimal…
