I appreciate how John nuances the difference between "tactical and moral considerations" and that he doesn't denigrate moral considerations simply because it may slightly take away from the tactical (*and from a utilitarian philosophy).

Officer Rex took his job seriously. From what I have been told Nashville metro doesn’t supply rifles or optics to patrol officers. This officer most likely spent his own money on quality equipment like that Razor HD.

@@TheGuardian_TM they should. Nashville collects more than enough tax money every year to outfit every officer with knights SR-15s and all the Gucci gear. I don’t go to Nashville often but there are some really rough areas and very few cops for the amount of residents and tourists. I usually fall on the skeptical side of law enforcement but you rarely hear of misconduct from Nashville metro and these cops that responded are top notch. They have restored some of my faith in modern policing.

John I'm so glad you addressed the fallacy of Gun Free Zones. GFZs are free kill zones for the mentally disturbed and by default are more dangerous than other areas because it's a filter that only lets in people with guns that have bad intent. The fact that we keep our children in these inherently more dangerous areas is insane.

Japan, Australia, Canada, Mexico, UK, France, South Korea, India, China are all Gun Free Zone countries! Between China and India alone we’re talking about over 2 Billion people and another 500 million in Europe. Why do none of those countries have Frequent mass shootings and mass school shootings like the U.S. does? It’s good to look for outside ideas on how to keep kids and citizens safe since Americans keep failing with status quo ideas. Texas of all places had 400 police officers rush to a school shooting within minutes and they failed to stop the shooter. Turning cities into Baghdad with armed patrols is illusion of safety.

I believe majority of cops are good, though far too many cannot shoot straight. This is part of what makes Uvalde so appalling.
I think biggest problem was that they stopped to think. Running to the threat can be automatically and requires far less courage and determination than starting backup once you’ve started thinking about risks. Solution is to train and game out scenarios to minimize decision making on the fly so everyone can fall back to training instead of focusing on their personal risk.

@@finngamesknudson1457 I've been a law enforcement firearms instructor for years. I've also taught active shooter, tactical medical etc. If you watch the body cam footage from Uvalde. It was a complete mess. You had too many agencies involved and nobody took charge. The great thing about this incident was that it was one agency. The Nashville Metro Police. They regularly train on active shooter response and it obviously showed in the video. I now work as a school resource officer and I have the same issues from surrounding agencies. Everybody has a chief that wants to do cheap stuff and play politics instead of doing what's right for the public. And you are correct, and my experience most police officers are great people. However, they get more caught up in responding to daily complaints, traffic stops etc than they do training for rare critical incidents. I've come to the realization that I can only be responsible for myself and my school. I regularly have meetings with staff and do trainings on how to keep the school safe.

Well done Nashville LEO! And great analysis from John at WPS. As a former Risk Manager of a charter school district that fortunately has yet to have an incident of this magnitude, but fails to have a realistic ideology of best practices to harden the schools, I could not agree more about the need for armed deterrents on campus. I was trained as a Guardian and needed only a letter from the district to legally carry concealed on campus. They declined stating they wanted to harden the campus in other ways. Nothing significantly changed after 2-3 years after the request.
I resigned after they repeatedly failed to support the needs within the district and changes in Texas law that directly impacted all public schools, including public charter schools in Texas. I couldn't stay and have this happen on my watch, having no real support from the district leadership for the safety of our students and staff.

I saw a tweet about the "chose not to attack a different target due to too much security," and I immediately went searching for the original source to see if this claim was true. It is. Those words came from the police chief's mouth during a press briefing. I still want to know exactly what she said/wrote, and how they determined that she had passed on that other target and why, but assuming it's as they say, this is a VERY significant piece of information in the gun debate. If a security/armed personnel presence deterred this shooter, that proves (at least to me) that armed deterrence works. Everything you said at the end makes sense (even though I knew it already did).

she did brilliant. she was a clear target for the shooter too but coolly stayed at the door to meet the arriving police officers and ensure there was no delay while lives were at stake. you're right, perhaps if enough of us keep mentioning it, the judge will grant her a civic award for her bravery. 😇

In not a LEO but when I was in private security/personal protection (for 20 years) I was always trained it there is an active threat or a potential for a continued threat handle the threat before administering aid to any injured.
The greatest deterrent to these events is having visible security measures like armed resource officers/security personnel… the next best thing is good guys/girls (teacher’s administrators)armed and ready to employ those methods of protecting themselves and others.

I live about 40 miles from Nashville and my kids go to a private Christian school. This shooting is very personal to me. I personally am very proud of how the law enforcement responded and efficiently handled the situation. Also, big props to the school being so prepared. That teacher that met the police and gave report was a rockstar.
John, I have huge respect for you and your skill set and experience. This was an outstanding objective evaluation of this incident. Thank you for your humble nature and method of presentation. You are very respectful of others and it is absolutely refreshing. I agree with every single word you said. I have a family friend that has been with Nashville PD for 30+ years. I intend to share this video to him.
Thank you for your knowledge that you share with others. God bless you. I also really appreciate how you openly convey how much you love your wife. I just find that to be awesome. Keep it up sir!

Again great job to the officers running to the gunfire! This was not SWAT. This was everyday patrol officers going in and stopping the threat!! They saved countless lives!! 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I'm glad you mentioned the tactical sacrifice here. Many have said they rushed the shooter. And that's okay. As an ex-Mil and ex-LEO, we've watched plenty of videos of shootouts between highly trained people vs low trained people. For a trained person, it becomes a high risk, high reward scenario when you can blitz an untrained / low skill person and neutralize them during a malfunction, bad cover situation, or a reload.

I think the initial hesitation upon entry was whether or not they were clearing rooms or if there was solid info on where they needed to go. You hear the one officer say "we don't know where he is" which signaled officers to start clearing until they received the stimulus from upstairs. I'm just wondering if the second team had been able to access the second floor right away, this may have ended sooner; or the shooter might have been in a different position to engage them rather than shooting out the window at units on the street. As an active threat response instructor, this is by far the most text-book real-world response I've seen; most responses are much more chaotic with officers seemingly forgetting their tactics training once their stress level goes up. Consistency and repetition in training go a long way to making sure various officers can come together and work as a cohesive and efficient team like this. It also helps when some officers step up and take some control to keep the team on track, like we saw in Nashville.

22 years as an LEO and been through active shooter training. It’s hard to be a 100% tactically sound team when you only get to do this in training. We have responded to calls for a potential active shooter at schools and more often than not, you are making entry with different people on a consistent basis.

TECC, ( civilian version of TCCC ), has 3 primary objectives.
    1 Stop the killing
    2 Stop the dying
    3 Evacuate the injured
So the idea of morals trumping tactics is very understandable. I will push that on our Active Shooter Team.
