- That Night In Toronto
A film by Pierre & François Lamoureux
July 2005
When the colour of the night
And all the smoke for one life
Gives way to shaky movements
Improvisational skills
A forest of whispering speakers
Let's swear that we will
Get with the times
In a current health to stay
Let's get friendship right
Get life day-to-day
In the forget-yer-skates dream
Full of countervailing woes
Its diverse-as-ever seen
Proceeding on a need-to-know
On a face so full of meaning
As to almost make it glow
For a good life we just might have to weaken
And find somewhere to go
Go somewhere we're needed
Find somewhere to grow
Grow somewhere we're needed
When the colour of the night
And all the smoke for one life
Gives way to shaky movements
Improvisational skills
In the forest of whispering speakers
Let's swear that we will
Get with the times
In a current health to stay
Let's get friendship right
Get life day-to-day
In the forget-yer-skates dream
Full of countervailing woes
In diverse-as-ever scenes
Proceeding on a need-to-know
In a face so full of meaning
As to almost make it glow
For a good life we just might have to weaken
And find somewhere to go
Go somewhere we're needed
Find somewhere to grow
Grow somewhere we're needed
Find somewhere to go
Let's go somewhere we're needed
Find somewhere to grow
We grow where we are needed
'Cause in the forget-yer-skates dream
You can hang your head in woe
And this diverse-as-ever scene
Know which way to go
I came here after the Juno's 50th, Feist singing with the Tragically Hip in Gord's absence. Can't stop crying.
She did a great job
@@chrisgray353 she really did. It was perfect.
Can’t beat the original but god she had so much class ♥️🍻
@@MrRoundthetwist It was so wonderful--touching to see them playing together again--and they only would have done it with her.
Same
Well I just found out about Gord,..........I can't tell how much I love Gord and the Hip. Actually a bunch of us down here in Texas do. I have been with the Hip from the beginning. I always thought they were the perfect rock band in every way. Every player was perfect for his spot in the band. The music was the best. From the eighties until now they have continued to be creative and vital. Gord's vocals were the best. His lyrics and music and poetry,.....omg the images and the emotions and the stories,...... I can't tell you how bummed out I am right now. Y'all up in Canada are so lucky to have Gord and the Hip. I'm gonna grab me a pint of whiskey and have a couple of hits of weed and spend the evening listening to The Tragically Hip. I will be happy and sad and everything in between. I don't ever pray,..but I will pray tonight. I don't ever cry , but I cried when I found out. But I'm glad too. Y'all in Canada are very fortunate indeed.
Hope you're doing well in Texas Mike. Miss you so much already Gord.
peace, brother!
Never heard of those guys. 1994-ish? Some friends drug me kicking and screaming to see The Tragically Hip at the Backyard out Bee Caves road. They threw a hit of exstasy in me and I proceeded to have the most amazing musical experience I've ever had or will ever have. Just like you said, every person in that band was perfect at their position, but fuck was Gord mesmerizing to watch! Well over an hour of a spectacle I could never have imagined.
This was so cool to read right now. Thanks.
❤❣👌
First time I heard this song I got out from under the truck I was wrenching on, walked over to my stereo, and listened to it about five times. Loud.
The power of music my friend.
@@spiderman0863 I was younger, only like 12-13 when it came out. But I loved alternative rock and knew a few songs from The Hip; this song just felt different for a radio tune. Something about that swirly intro guitar part that sets the scene so perfectly.
I remember hearing this first time. You know, when it hits you, and you think: oh yeah!! played it for hours straight right away. Now it remains in my yearly rotation and will be played at that moment.
This concert right here may be the best ever recorded in history
I miss this music so much. The last few years seem incomplete without Gord and The Hip steering me through life
Me too ❤
You hit the nail with that!
This may be the most beautiful song ever written
It's a good life with the hip in it hi to all Canada during lock down from Bristol UK stay safe xx
Our lives are better because of them.......from Jax, Florida
The whole world deserves to hear this song
This song brings a tear to my eye every time, Gord was a LEGEND. Tragically Hip is one of the best rock bands in history of the planet. BEST Canadian band EVER no contest.
So deeply agree. Incredible. Love❤
Rob baker is the perfect example of not overwhelming people with speed and plays with more feel and playing the right notes
Music is the space between notes
watching this in July 2024....still brings a tear to my eye. We ALL miss you, Gord
we do indeed
Oh man! We all do Gord!
Their most beautiful song in my opinion…. That voice!… Damn! He left too soon because the heavens wanted him to sing with the angels
It’s beautiful.
“The only thing of importance, when we depart, will be the traces of love we have left behind.” ― Albert Schweitzer
Rest In Peace Gord.
This should have hundreds of millions of views, well, just like every Hip song there is. One of the best live bands to ever exist, let alone bands in the world period. Miss you so much Gord. Masterpiece.
thee very greatest
@@frankdonaldsoncanadianking9651 I agree 100%
Addicted to this song, but like all of their songs. No one could replace him.
As a Detroit area lifelong hockey player, I can't express how deeply I love the reference to the odd psychological phenomenon of the "forget-yer-skates dream " God knows we have all had it. Love this song, thanks for posting
"This song is about the lull of Detroit" -- TTH, Live Between US. Miss you already, Gord.
Yeah, truly an amazing lyric. Gord was a goaltender (as was I). Forgetting goalie skates adds a deeper dimension of horror to the "forget yer skates dream". The worst embarrassment for any goalie in minor hockey is having to wear some kids borrowed "forward player" skates in net. Been there!
I can imagine what the crowd felt seeing this live. Eerily perfect and haunting. A once in a lifetime perfect place at the right time. They made a point to perform this in a way that shook the room, and peoples outlook on life.
This performance by Gord is without a doubt his best vocals of any other live performance I've ever heard. 👏👏👏❤️
One of my favorite Matt's, ever. Playing in the light. Thank God for Pearl Jam ❤
Rob Baker is the coolest guitarist in rock. Period!
Correct! One of the best ever.
Can’t believe the world didn’t wake up to one of the best poets in music at our time. There is no band like the hip. Any other band can be compared to some
One of my favorite hip songs
i found this one late, but i feel it big time now... #ripgord
Gordon wherever you are now, somewhere among the stars…I hope you know how much you are loved, missed, treasured by all of us…. ♥️🕊️
This song seems so appropriate for what we are currently enduring. Gord, our lost poet laureate.
This song is so fuckin good omg drunk high this song hits so hard RIP Gord hope your rockin somewhere thank you for your music
Incredible, this is better than the studio version
They released this concert 10-15 years ago on DVD and the whole show is great.
Thanks, Gord we are all a little richer to have known you too. Love to your family and your second family a band of brothers the TRAGICALLY HIP
I loved Hip for the first time I heard them in Montreal.
If this song doesn't feel like your is soul being released from it's Earthly bounds... Then you didn't listen
This song is absolutely stunning!
We grow where we are needed.
I am so sad I will never get to see these guys live. These guys became one of my favorite bands after hearing them on TPB. Simply amazing. Peace and Love from Texas. 🖤 RIP Gord
The "Legend" and the Lyrics to live by... RIP Gord
Rest In Peace Gord... Thanks for all the beautiful music and poetry.
This date will sadden me forever. RIP
This is such an incredible song.
This hits me to the core ,
RIP Gord....you will be missed!
Still is! ❤
Best band ever
Agreed
That is a piece of heaven right there. I hope your singing somewhere Gord. See ya somewhere down the road....
Wonderful version of this classic song.RIP Gord.
Let's get friendship right.
It's a been a week of tears and good memories that will live on... #ingordwetrust
That's the energy I was looking for! Yes!
yes !!!
I wasn't at THIS show, but saw them either right before or right after, outside Detroit. Indescribable. a highlight of my live music resume that's for sure
I can't remember everything but I remember the first time I heard Blow at High Dough on the radio and where I was at that time. I've seen this band so many times I'm not sure of the exact amount in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom in 91, at an outdoor summer festival in Kelowna BC, in Toronto Ontario then back a few more times at GM Place in Vancouver. I even saw them play this song live for this albums tour. The live broadcast from their last show in Kingston Ontario broke my heart and I still feel like I've lost a brother. The Junos 50th with Feist singing this song with the boys without Gord was beautiful and so good but hurts so bad. Thank you Tragically Hip for all those great times and the memories with your music so close to us all ❤💋💔🇨🇦🎶
Best song on In Violet Light.
love the chord changes in this song...moving, lovely tune
the love of a man .. brought me to this song
Hope you're loved too Khrys; I'm sure you are. Miss you so much already, Gord.
Amazing vocals. Gord at his best
My love for Gord and his bandmates for ever
Love...Love....Love....
Missing you terribly Gordie... 😭
great song
Oh god. So good.
My 4 year old calls this song "It's a good life if you don't forget your skates"
Wow! This performance touched me. Super powerful version of this song!
I love Gord. Since I saw him for the first time in 92, I think. I fell in love with his honesty annd perseverance. I never would have thought he walked down a similar path as my father. I was given the blessing of being with my dad for the six months up to the time he experienced the transformation. I got to hold his hand as he passed over to be with the eternal Energy Christ.
I miss you dad, Windel David and I sure do miss you Gord. You both taught me how to be be a loving and strong man. I still have a long way to go but you guys planted heavy, lasting seeds.
My goal is to reconcile with my son. Parker Ryburn. The Lord has already brought my ex wife back to me.
God is real.
I promise you all that
Edit October 2021 :
Dark days. Don’t know if love is real. Maybe it is just dopamine. I’m not trying to believe that.
Keep fighting.
Gorgeous!! Simply.
There will never be another Gord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy Birthday Gord. Missing you terribly.
It's a good life...RIP Gordo.
Its hell when you weaken, the story on my life, hope it does not go for too long
Brilliant
Brilliant.
How about that then , doesn't get any better than this ,
We could all use some Gordie right now. RIP you beautiful soul
❤
Gorgeous Iss Away..He Likes To Be Away💙💞💎💘
Wow
Waw they really were special
Gord is a genius
Nice Ayotte drums. Ray Ayotte still sits in on jams here in Van.
Poetry Poetry Poetry RIP GD
Justin Hawkins. God of Music Knowledgeness.
I love Gordon
Why are comments disabled for a lot of their other videos? Crikey, they seem the most inoffensive of bands (in a good way). Hadn't heard of them before he died, but then I'm from New Zealand.
Anyways, am enjoying them. ??????
Hits me right in the guts!
We Live On Together💯🎁❤💋
Soon it will be 7 years that he left us…..😢
God, I miss Gord.
Myself as well.
Fucking amazing ❤
Break My Heart*
Gord went somewhere he was needed
💎💘
Proceeding on a need to know
These guys were an amazing band to see live. I saw them first time play a festival in Kingston...they were barely out of high school. I knew listening to them that they were going to create some incredible music...and did they. Thanks for a lifetime of musical memories lads. 🍻
Fuck!.... I miss him 😢
🍀
So missed
when I put the dvd in and man and microphone begin...............
Life is a little less good without Gord in it.
broke a few with out ever playing.....
I know what you mean
This ain't Van Halen. There is no Gary Cheronne who can take his place.
🎁❤️
Probably their most poignant song.
Wow
