  • Jack runs through his top 5 low cost winter cycling hacks to keep you warm, dry and comfortable during the wet and cold of winter ❄️💪
Riding your bike in the winter months is hard. It can be cold, wet, windy - often all three at once - and that’s before you factor in having to occasionally ride in the dark. But that doesn’t mean you should avoid it altogether.
In this video, Jack Luke runs us through his top 5 favourite free (or very cheap) hacks to make cycling in winter that little bit easier.
Which hacks do you use? What did we miss? Let us know in the comments!

Instead of poly bags I wash out foil crisp packets and use those over my socks. They act like thermal blankets. Highly recommended 🤜🏻🤛🏻

When you take off your winter cycling tights after your ride, and your knees are cold you are causing harm to your knees. When I was 16-17 yo, I asked my mom to make some padding to tackle my dead cold knees.
She sewed pallet shrink wrap to a piece of jacket insulation material. It's 40 cm x 20 cm and 0.5 cm thick.
After my rides, my knees are warm, and sweaty. I put it under the tights, with the pallet shrink wrap facing outwards and the insulation material goes on my knee . It does not move, if you tights are not loose. I use this when the temp goes below 17 C and it good down to -3 C . Below that I not going out cycling. Problem solved.

      Love those hacks.👍🏼
I will surely try and wax my cleats, maybe it'll shed mud & clay better. Underdressing and layering: Yessss! Definitely my way to go.
Always carry some plastic bags, best hack, I guess. Freezer bags & rubber bands are great ermergency mittens, esp. w/ wider socks.
For feet my tip from winter camping: really thin liner socks, silnylon VBL socks under normal socks, if your shoes accommodate the volume (or size up). Hi-viz booties with zipper or velcro to add/remove on the ride.

For the pedal hack my dad likes to use silicone spray for the pedal and the cleat. It works for a long time, doesn't affect the look of the pedal, and doesn't collect dirt.

I commute year round. Not a tip for roadies but when it's getting to -2 or colder I switch to flats and wear high walking boot. Also if you're a MTB summer commuter, try winter too. I swear it's the best time of year. Trails go hard again when frozen riding better than dry summer. And they're emptry. No dog walkers or random kids. Wrap up get some good lights and you'll be well set.

That candle wax tip is awesome. My oboe teacher did this to the screws of this instrument for two reasons. It keeps the bolts in place, like a cheap and weak version of loctite and keeps moisture out. Never thought about doing that on anything that has to do with bikes though.

I use to ride in Chicago back in the 70s and what you suggest will work. My friend, Jimmy, and I were bike racers, we rode all through the winter when the streets were dry. Salt trucks melted the street ice. I worn a water/wind proof light jacket&gloves, sweater jersey, and t-shirt and wool leggings. We got up to speed quickly and once our blood was really circulating nature took over and the wind actually felt like a summer breeze.

Tumble dry your kit or put it on a radiator (If your kit allows, never a fan heater!) a few minutes before your ride. If you underdress you will still start warm from the heat in the clothing, hopefully once this goes, you have warmed up from pedaling! 😊

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

Or just put the kit on, then run around trying to find bike computer/keys/bike lights before you go outside. But it's is good way of thinking.

Jack,, you are a great presenter, I like your enthusiasm!
I use chemical heat packs called “toe warmers”. I place them on top of my shoes, over my toe area. They have some sticky backing so they stay in place, and then I pull my overshoes over them. Works great for really cold weather, like well below freezing.

Some good hacks there! Here's some more:
Drying your shoes after the ride:
Stuff them with newspapers, they really soak it out amazingly!
Even though, I just got those Drysure thingis you put into your shoes. They essently do the same thing as there's not really so many newspapers around anymore :)
Also thinking about buying a full suit like the ones by Dirtlej to close that awful gap between your pants and jacket.

  • @chadkranak4521

I used plastic bags on my feet for winters as a bike messenger in nyc. It was a life safer!

  •  ปีที่แล้ว

Reading the weather forecast, noting temperature before you leave and during the ride is really important to learn how much you need to put on. If it's windy and/or rainy you'll have the same temperature for the whole ride. But on a still day with blue sky it can differ 10-15 degrees. I had a ride recently with 10 degrees by the house and 4km out it dropped to -2.8. Forecast said 20-30km/h wind but it was none for the first two hours. Absolutely horrible.
Otherwise my biggest problem is my feet are too hot and will get sweaty with overshoes. I'm planning I'm buying winter shoes to get the much needed ability to breath. Always wet feet from the inside now.

  • @caveboy9988

I go for oiling my feet with olive oil or similar when really cold. Still acts as a barrier and more comfortable than a plastic bag.

  • @KoenMiseur
    @KoenMiseur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I use my gravelbike (Ribble CGR SL) as my winterbike (and I ride more on it in the road tbh) and I always have mudguards on it, on the road I use 30mm tires (why aren't there more 30mm tires!) and on gravel 38mm and I don't need to take of my mudguards!
I do hate legwarmers, they are never comfortable and they leave a huge mark on my upperleg, it also feels like it cuts of my blood and if I buy a size larger they fall down!
Also that plasticbag is just dumb, if u live in Belgium or in the UK or in any country that it rains a lot just buy wintershoes, they are waterproof and warm but u can still ride in them when it's 15°c! They are also super string so they last much longer than normal bike shoes and they are so worth it!

  • @gac4460
    @gac4460 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Instead of putting my feet in a plastic bag (although I have also done that once, but that was on a hike) I wrap my feet with socks on in tinfoil. Isn't waterproof, but you don't sweat that way - if it shouldn't rain or snow that day, this is in my eye a better solution.

    1. normal cycling sock

Came back from a muddy bike ride yesterday and the mudguards were one of the things I was planning to strip off - or replace with something smaller, or further from the tyres. Mud and bits of grass just kept getting wedged under the back and between the tyre and the wire stays. I'm pretty sure an additional mudguard extender would have collected even more. Great for wet commutes, but I'm not sure about MTB rides in the sticky mud. Any (cheap) solutions for this would be appreciated in replies. I'm intending to combine my off-road cycling with camping, so I can't just go all who-gives-a-sh1t and have a shower later, I need to keep clean and dry.
I'm starting to like the idea of plastic bags inside shoes (but why not outside the sock, is my question), since every pair of "waterproof" shoes and boots I've ever had aren't waterproof after a month or so, despite cleaning and treatments, etc...with the possible exception of leather with Dubbin, which I may have to return to using. Good old technology, a dead animal hide and some wax.

Have definitely used the plastic bag over feet trick- like you said it feels terrible and wrong until you’re about 2 minutes into a ride and all is well. I usually run dog poop bags over my socks inside the shoes because their small size makes it feel less bulk and doesn’t run up your ankle. Also, they’re plentiful and you feel *slightly* less wasteful throwing them away compared to larger shopping bags.

I like the flappy reflectors on the back of the saddle. Where does one get it? I find that when I am wearing flappy things (such as the hi viz waistcoat that Jack is also sporting) cars keep their distance. There is research to show that long hair has a similar effect. I think that hair may be a gender thing as well but there is something uncertain about flappy things that makes people keep their distance.
