I am glad to know that there are folks out there who are saying what I've been saying about Milroe since last year. He's a great person and a fantastic athlete, but unfortunately he struggles making the correct reads especially when he has to do it quickly. That limits Alabama in the short passing game and in the zone read game. With basically the entire offense predicated on him being a factor in the run game and then throwing the ball downfield. It makes Bama's offense extremely inconsistent.
As an Alabama fan, i appreciate everything Jalen Milroe has given the program for four seasons. You can tell he really cares, and that his teammates love and respect him. That said, I'm looking forward to a new quarterback next year. Milroe remains fairly high on Mel Kiper's quarterback big board, and I have to think he'll be ready to move on to the NFL after this season. If we had a better run-blocking offensive line, perhaps some of his struggles would be mitigated, but I'm tired of seeing this offense.
So happy to hear about your son coming home! I have been watching and or listening to Alabama football for more than 50 years and the UT game and more so the OU game were the most demoralizing games I can remember. Dysfunctional is right.
I’d like to Think of coach freeze as a smart man. he has probably been reviewing and implementing strategy since Alabama’s first loss and then their second and then their third.
I was ready for Ty Simpson to start the 4th quarter. I know it would kill team morale. Worst I have seen Bama offense play in 15 years... I still have faith in DeBoer. Roll Tide!
Hi guys -- love the podcast... One thing, and trying not to be nit-picky, but that's par for the course with nerds... the phrase is "cut and DRIED" not "cut and dry" - it refers to how you could buy your tobacco a long time ago. i.e. it has been cut and it has been dried. Don't know why I find it so annoying when people say "dry", but there you go... Other sayings like "part and parcel" not being correct (e.g. Part and partial) also bug the ever living sh*t out of me too... It's sad, I know -- trying to overcome it. Great analysis as always. Agree about the Milroe hesitation/processing issue -- I think he's sucessful when he doesn't overthink and second guess himself too much and is just in the zone. His problem is that the open receiver read and checkdown is not second nature and knowing his hot receiver/dump off option or throwing out of bounds is not a reflex-level instinct. He'd rather instinctually just try to outrun everybody - same reason why he doesn't go north/south and runs laterally or when he gets a huge yardage loss on a sack. :)
Good breakdown, however, I want to challenge the notion that Bama doesn't have issues at home against edge pressure. I believe the South Carolina game is good evidence of this because Bama threw 2 interceptions and was held to just over 100 yards on the ground. Auburn's defense isn't as good at pressure but is close. Not to mention better run defense. Because they couldn't relay on the run game and got pressure the game was in jeapordy at home.I think auburn is going to make it closer than the model.
8:00. Skill can be developed. I’ve said for a while that not being live in practice for him is a problem. He’s protected in practice so he holds the ball, no urgency in the pocket, and a deer in headlights in the game. He is rushes his throws like a shot putt. When he gets sacked in the game, the O line isn’t even upset. What does that tell you? 1- soft practices 2-no competition in practice. Meaning O vs D /good on good being dawgs. They’re running this like a high school team.
Is it possible for the model to give a confidence interval for each teams score? For example the model had Alabama at 29.7, but could it also say it’s like 80% confident Bama score between 13 and 35 points or something like that?
Thank you for your points about Deboer at the end. As a Bama fan it is frustrating because so many of us want to call for his head without really thinking about the fact that this isn’t his personnel, it’s Sabans. If it took Kirby 5 years to get where he is, we Bama fans need to get out of our emotions and give the man some time
The thing with Kirby was that was his first time being a head coach so as a UGA fan you could see mistakes and think that it was him learning. Deboer is a really good coach and I think yall will be good long term but it’s still a major issue he’s gotta solve
@ when Saban coached LSU he didn’t win a natty until his 4th year if I’m not mistaken, and he had similar coaching experience to Deboer by that point. I think it’s a huge issue as well and I hope he doesn’t act like Sweeney where he keeps coaches just because he likes them even though they’re not good coaches, but like I said I’m willing to give him time
If DeBoer/Bama wins one of their next two games, DeBoer will have 9 wins - equaling the most wins as a first year Bama coach. Bear didn't do it. Saban didn't do it (he was 7-6). DeBoer and Frank Thomas will be co-leaders of that record. And before anyone says Saban had limited talent compared to DeBoer I'll remind you that Bama lost 32 players after Saban's retirement. Plus, DeBoer lost his OC and OL coach to the Seahawks so late that he couldn't go out and hire people for those roles in time for this season. DeBoer is still learning the intensity of every game in the SEC - especially if you are Alabama, everyone's circled game on their schedule - but he is smart. He will figure it out. And again, he will probably exceed Bear's and Saban's first year record while he was 'learning'.
It's very hard to rack up tackles for loss when you only rush 3 all season and have ur best pass rushers drop back in coverage 50% of their snaps. Been so frustrating. I guarantee the defensive playcalling will give Milroe time and space to make plays all game.
If DeBoer/Bama wins one of their next two games, DeBoer will have 9 wins - equaling the most wins as a first year Bama coach. Bear didn't do it. Saban didn't do it (he was 7-6). Thank you for telling the truth. TV only talks about what a dynamic, electric player Milroe is. Milroe can't read defenses, has horrible mechanics, is slow to make decisions and can't feel the pressure. He is turnover prone and tends to feel sorry for himself when he doesn't start out well. He struggles with easy completions and plays too out of control. Mentally he is not very strong. Bama may win this game but if they do it will be an ugly slugfest.
Regardless of what happens in the postseason, we can’t win a title this year. DeBoer is still a year or two away from having his team running his system. A lot of Bama fans want to get rid of him already and that’s just insane. We will be back and winning at a high level again, just probably not this yeat
