Most improvements are incremental. Since almost every file I use is external the 512 is fine for an internal drive. Buying a M1 Pro MBP seems like a steal.

In my region, M1 Pro isn’t available. I might be forced to buy the M2 Pro😢……

its actually impressive that the cpu is benching the same because you're comparing last years upgraded model to this years base model. the full M1 Pro has 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency and the binned m2 pro has 6 performance and 4 efficiency cores. so with two "weaker" cores its performing almost the same.

But then again, if you take the price point into consideration, the difference is kinda underwhelming.

I think I’m glad I bought the M1 Pro MacBook Pro on Black Friday at Costco in Canada for $400 off (about $2100 Cdn)…instead of waiting for the M2 Pro version - which is now $100 more than then M1 Pro sold for ($2600 vs $2500). I got the “base” model, because even with photo and some video editing, 512gb is plenty to work with. That’s too bad Apple felt the need to cheap out on the SSD on the new model. I don’t think the “base” model is cheap by any measure, and increasing it to a 1tb drive to get around that slower “base” SSD brings the price up to $2850. Crazy.

How does SSD speed effect music production? Will upgrading the SSD (512 to 1TB) bring the SSD speed up?

  • @ZkyroV

Does the ssd speed on the m2 have a big difference compared to the m1 in the real world?

  • @andyH_England

SSD speeds are really mostly spec-chasing for the consumer buying the base models. What average user cares about the difference other than bragging rights? What workflow needs 6Gbps transfer speeds. My phone transfers much less than 2Gbps, as does my external SSD, and my SD card is less than 1Gbps!
Prosumers will buy sensibly, getting the upgraded chip (Max) with 64GB/2TB as they may transfer from networked drives.
As for performance, the slower SSDs will impinge on that if you flood the RAM. But if you are that type of user, you should buy more RAM, as even a faster SSD using swap will be slower than simply buying more RAM.
So, Apple resetting their lineup, so that base models have slower SSDs is a basic business practice; logical, you pay more for better! The M1 was a freak as it was a new project, and Apple wanted to impress. They must build a lineup and ecosystem for the future, so people need to understand this.

You are not comparing base model to base model here. M1pro 10 core you have is the unbinned one with 8 performance cores and 2 efficient cores. The m2pro you have is the binned model with 6 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores. It’s actually a good test but don’t call them both base models

Actually it’s what I’m looking for since the refurbished M1 Pro 10 core model price is 1839 compare to m2 base model 1999 so this video help me a lot 160$ off with 512 more ssd seem to be good deal

@@JoeyRiz what is the difference - unbinned vs binned? What does that mean?

    • @JoeyRiz
      @JoeyRiz ปีที่แล้ว

Their are 2 different M1 Pro chips, one is a 10 core chip with 8 high performance and 2 efficiency cores but they also sell a binned version that is 8 cores. This one has 6 high performance and 2 efficiency cores.
The M2 pro is similar but the binned version of the chip which he is using here is 10 cores but has 6 high performance cores and 4 efficient cores.
It gets confusing but he is putting the low end chip from this year against the high end chip for last year. Both are 10 cores but differently laid out.

My next MacBook won’t be for a very long time, but it better not have a notch! Horrible! How is Dell able to put a 1080p web camera without a notch yet Apple cannot?

My two-year-old MB Pro 13 M1 still has 100% battery. So, if the year-old MB Pro 14 M1 is looked after, that should not be an issue. I use 4-5 hours of SOT a day and get around 13 hours before I need to charge, and I only charge to 85% using AlDente.

According to Apple's own specs, the new 6E models should have exactly the same WiFi performance as the old ones when connected to 5GHz networks. I suppose it is possible that they changed the antennas, but I get 700 Mbit on my M1 Air pretty much anywhere in my house. Do you maybe have 2 APs and the one getting slower speeds isn't connected to the closest one?

That's disappointing. I'd rather wait for the M2 Max Mac Studio then than shell out for a 14" MBP.

Question: M2 Mac Mini 256GB has SSD speed issue due to lack of RAID0(by 2), while MBP is due to lack of RAID0(by 4), which means that MBP has faster SSD performance at 1TB(4*256GB) compared with Mac Mini with 1TB(2*512GB). Then, does it mean that the M2 Pro Mac Mini has a SSD slower than M2 Pro MacBook Pro?

If you get the larger configs, it has uses more storage modules to reach the capacity and can do more parallel I/O. I have a new M2 14" base coming to replace my M1 14" base. I am curious to see if this change impacts anything in actual day to day use.
