15-Inch MacBook Air VS 14-Inch MacBook Pro! Size or Speed!?

  • I go deep, comparing the all-new 15" MacBook Air against the current M2 Pro 14-inch MacBook Pro. While the MacBook Air 15 is super thin and light, the 14" MacBook Pro is more powerful and with a better display. Which one is the better buy?

It would be sooooo nice if there were TH-cam reviews for Apple laptops that didn’t solely focus on VIDEO EDITING and spec comparisons. I get it. You guys are content creators so that’s right up your alley. But please don’t forget about the rest of us. What about real-world use cases? I’m not talking about basic web browsing, etc. I’m talking some comparisons about the more taxing knowledge worker tasks like running virtual machines (VM’s), running collaboration apps such as MS Teams, Zoom, WebEx, screen sharing in collaboration apps, etc. I’ve yet to come across a single TH-cam review that addresses whether or not an Air is sufficient for such tasks or if a Pro is the way to go.

I can answer that for you my friend, for apps you're talking about, get the base air model. I've been using m1 air base model for 2 years with no issues. Just one thing, forget VMs, that's a different story, since you'll have to use arm version of every VM you need.

yeah I have the same problem, they only do export comparison tests most of the time, but that does not tell how good of a machine it actually is, like i'd much rather see how the timeline plays (if its smooth or not), rather than export tests,
also they never test how good multitasking is in these devices, or how good basic common apps play on the background, like listening to music or playing a youtube video on the background while working on your mac and its very hard to even known if any mac is good for u, when one day they say the m1 air is amazing at video editing, then as soon as the m1 pro and max launches, they say that you NEED an m1 max for video editing, and an m1 might not be enough
sometimes you gotta spend hours just watching reviews just to get the same conclusion bcz all youtube reviews are the same and nothing actually helps

but to answer ur question those apps will run just fine with just an m1 air, the m2 is just a slight jump comparatively to the m1 you wont even notice the diference and i'd argue the m1 could even run better with the base storage, since the m2 mac air has half the storage speeds compared to the m1, but if you're thinking of using vm's try to go for 16gb of ram skip the 8gb if you can, and for MS teams, that app just runs garbage on everything, it ran badly on my intel mac, and it continues to run badly on my m1 pro, even tho all the other apps, even much more demanding apps like after effects, run 10 times better, so for ms teams you'll just have to deal with the bad performance sadly

I think ARM Windows 11 is a very interesting VM actually... and it's a great way to test Windows ARM software and so forth. With Parallels. The Air is cute as could be and it'll do the deeds... I used a Starlight 13" M2 Air base model and the memory pressure with 8GB of RAM was often high, the tiny storage was stressed with Windows 11 added on... but it was somehow "fun". The 14" Pro even the most base model is easier to live with. I think the absolutely biggest issue with the Air and 13" "Pro" M1 and M2 base model chips is that you can only connect one external display. It's super annoying and there's no workaround. I think rather than getting upgrades on the inherently flawed Air... I'd look at open box base models personally.... Get that thing as close to $1000 as you can... it'll always be cool, and it'll always be limited. And then get something else for something else. A Mac Studio? A PC Desktop? I don't know. This idea that one computer must do it all and at all times is interesting but cloud accounts makes it easier than even to have two systems. A coffee shop comfy laptop like the Air. The 14 and 16" Pro are chunkers and they do the job. They lack a little bit the fun factor but you can charge the laptop or dock the laptop of either side, have more and better ports and SUPER long lasting battery. Importantly, the Air doesn't support fast charging either... you can 140W charge a 14 or 16" Pro and get out of a bind in minutes. Maxed out Air will appeal to some, but not me. I'd rather change it out every single year personally.

There’s a lot of users like me who literally only use their MacBook for email, video, ect. and just love the look, feel, and reliability of Apple laptops. I would consider the 15" not for speed but for its weight - if lighter. The larger size would be good for my failing eyesight as I grow older.

The introduction of the 15in MBAir completes the mix. This harkens back to the 4-quadrant strategy by Jobs when he came back to  and cleaned house. Two dimensions ... first across Pro-Users and Consumer-Users .. second across size. 13in MBAir and 14in MBPro = small size ... 15in MBAir and 16in MBPro = large size. As someone with extreme OCD ... Don't stop watching before you get to the 11:00 mark, because that is the heart of the issue. If you spec up the MBA 15 to the same base memory and storage as the base MBP 14 (16gb/512gb) the value proposition of the MBP 14 goes through the roof with better processor performance (10c/16c vs 8c/10c), better screen (miniLED 120hz), TB4 x 3, HDMI + SDXC. That's a very thin $300 for the extra 3oz of heft in your backpack.

Hello. I will be receiving a 14-inch Macbook Pro M1 (2021 model) shortly. But I much prefer the use of a mouse to the trackpad. What would be the solution to successfully connect my good old Microsoft wired mouse (whose purchase dates back more than 10 years) to this Mackbook Pro? I specify that this mouse has the old generation of USB-A socket. I don't understand anything at all about ports called Thunderbolt but I think those ports won't accept my mouse jack. Finally, will using my wired mouse cause me to underuse the speed capability of this Macbook Pro (I mean compared to a Bluetooth type mouse)? Thank you for your reply.

I have been getting use for 11 years now after the first MacBook Pro Retina 2012 they still hang in there pretty good. I have been doing some special effects for fun on the side and needed power but from about 2015 to 2020 MacBooks Air or Pro sucked. I was not going to pay that much, so I switched to a Gaming PC, I liked it a lot, (it was black, rainbow keyboards, was able to upgrade a lot of RAM and SSD for cheap, had all the ports you could want, but it ran hot, and finally died after three years lately. I don't like dropping 3 to 4K for a laptop, so for me I decided to go for the MacBook Air 15" with the dark finish, it comes next week, can't wait. Apple is finally getting things together for laptops again (and phones) now that Jony Ives is gone (thank God, from my perspective). With the 14" MBP you also get better I/O peripherals, thermals, webcam quality (real-world tests show that MBP camera software is better than that on air), screen, and speakers. Fr $200 for an extra 8GB ram and $200 for an extra 256gb storage is way more than their targeted 70% profit margins. The 8gb ram does not cost them more than $50 for sure and the 256GB storage does not cost them more than $30. The only reason why they must do it is to not cannibalize their pro lineup. My question is why does an extra 16gb ram cost $400 dollars on the 14in pro 😐. At that point it's just greedy. They know the person that needs 32GB ram will be forced to pay.

Is it perhaps how much data can be transferred at once instantaneously, vs how much data is capable of being stored for instantaneous transfer? So you can store 16gb of data but only retrieve 100gb/s, vs storing say 8gb of data but being able to retrieve more of it faster at 200gb/s? This doesn't quite make sense either cuz.. 200gb.. is a lot more than the 8gb that would be stored.. so I must be understanding this wrong.

Price wise people make this comparison, but I think a better comparison would be with the 16" MacBook Pro. If you want a big screen, but don't need the extra ports and the sustained performance of the 16" MacBook Pro, you now have a great alternative. I ordered my 15" MacBook Air with 24GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD for $2099. Compare this to the 16" MacBook Pro with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD which is $3099. So yea.. I gave up a bit of performance (that I don't always need) for a much better travel weight. Oh yea...I also saved $1000 to spend elsewhere.

    • @larrydiaz7156

That's great, but there is no way you are going to need 24GB of RAM and not need the extra cooling capabilities and substantial performance increase, so your purchase seems rather incoherent. That's even more noticeable when the M1 Pro 16" can be found for 1800$ (which will outperform the 15 Air still) and the M2 Pro 16 is 2250$, both with 16GB and 1TB SSD. The weight difference is definitely more noticeable at 700g, which is about the weight of a standard FF lens.

I develop web software and mostly I need the RAM for multiple Chrome web pages. It's a pig compared to Safari but I have to support it. Incremental builds take only a minute or two and are nothing like Rendering or Transcoding that can fully load the CPU for several minutes. This new 15" MacBook Air is nearly IDEAL for a developer laptop. Given its better portability, I would say that it dethrones the 16" MacBook Pro for that title. Ahhh, but not everybody needs that and not everybody will notice. It is where the Tech Tubers have a role to play, to point this out to the people that are looking for answers. With 4K the standard for video capture and no way to upgrade in the future (unlike prior intel macs) it is completely unacceptable that the air doesn't go to at least 4 TB storage. Hi, I just wanted to share the Gospel. In the Bible, God made the commands of what we should and shouldn’t do, but we broke them. We all have lied, stolen, cheated, blasphemed the name of God etc. and only committing one sin is worthy of going to hell, that's how serious sin is in God's eyes. So that’s why God sent His Son Jesus down to earth as a human form to live a perfect life, and to die for all our sins in our place on the cross so we could be washed clean of them, and be with Him in Heaven, and not go to hell where we deserve to go. And to receive that, you have to repent of your sins and put your trust in Jesus Christ, then you will be saved! God bless!

Q1: If you run CPU-intensive and demanding tasks, then of course the fans may occasionally kick in to cool the system down. Otherwise, it probably won't be turned on most of the time. M series MacBooks are designed to work silently and efficiently (to the point that Apple don't even bother putting a fan in the MBA). The MBP is not noisy per say, but it is definitely quieter than most Windows laptops on the market
Q2: No idea what the question is asking
Q3: No.. it should be the other way around. The MBP is more than capable of handling demanding tasks like Final Cut Pro video rendering and all. The MBA, however, is more likely to heat up (and eventually throttle) when handling demanding tasks. Moreover, the MBA has no fans, heat pipes, heat spreaders, heat sink whatsoever (verified by a tear-down by ifixit), so you're going to have to deal with the heat on your own, should the need arises
Bottom line: Fan noise should not be your main concern. What's more important is how you'll be using the MacBook. If you need to run demanding tasks, then a MBP is more suitable as it has a more capable M2 Pro chip and the fans to cool it down. The MBA is fan-less, so it can reach high temperatures when run demanding tasks and start throttling to keep the CPU cool (inadvertently affecting the performance)
