We did mixed EC/nappies and it was brilliant. Little one was fully potty trained for number two's at 5 months and woke up one morning at 14 months said "no" took off the nappy and has been totally independant with the potty/toilet every since. Has never once wet the bed in 5 years

I didn't even know about this when I had my two but they are just about grown now lol. Even if I had, sadly this would not have been possible for us just simply due to both being extremely premature and various health issues in the first 2 years, surgery ect that just would have created more set back and possibly issues with self esteem with back and forth after each surgery and procedure along with the health issues. I don't see anything wrong with this as long as you don't take it to the point where you are punishing baby for not going or having accidents. I actually knew somebody, years after mine were through the toddler stage, who was quite harsh with this style of training. I can deff see where there can be a very fine line between healthy use of this technique and extremely unhealthy. As long as you continue with the way you describe in the video girl, you are doing an amazing job. I do hope this continues to work for you and your child.

I've had a conversation about it with my sister. (We both don't have any kids yet.) We do have friends that do through. I think what we leaded on, is it's more about training yourself which will eventually teach the child how to use the toilet by themselves.

    • @twdobesh
      @twdobesh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Pam M I didn’t see it as training myself. It was me being fine tuned to my baby’s cues that they needed to eliminate. Every cry and fuss has a purpose. Quickly you realize they want to communicate their elimination needs so they don’t soil themselves. You give them opportunities to potty when you would normally want to, like after eating, upon waking, and regularly throughout the day. There is no need to potty train later on when you use elimination communication because they don’t lose those urges to not soil themselves.

I love EC! Did it with 3 out of 4 babies. As a fellow mobility challenged mama, what helped me keep up with EC when I wasn't up to hauling baby around was having a little potty and a diaper caddy set up in our main hangout space (living room for us). The ikea potty is the best I've found for teeny baby bums to sit independently. My diaper caddy had dipes & wipes, changing pad, and an extra outfit or two and is easy to take with me as I move around the house.

Partly because some people need to make lots of money on diapers, I guess ..The more we know about this, the less diapers we need, and the earlier babies become potty trained. Selling diapers to four-five-six year old children is probably big business.

There are 1000s of children who are potty trained well before 18 months without using this method, not always the best if there's more than one child or restricted time. There's no rush of competition to get a child potty trained, just enjoy and love them.

This makes SO much sense. Biologically, evolutionarily, psychologically. My son, however, was and still is perfectly content to pee all over himself any time of day. There was no communication and there probably never would have been, because he doesn't give a piss lol. Poop training was easy peasy. He stopped pooping laying down at 6 months. He was poop trained 2 full years before pee! 🙄

We just started EC 3 days ago with my daughter who's 11.5 months! I was scared that starting so late would be an issue but it's gone well so far and we're really excited. Even she's excited surprisingly! The first time she heard her stream hit the plastic potty her mind was blown 😅 We've been catching a lot of pee but she's poop shy so we'll see how that goes. Wish I knew about EC sooner! For baby #2 we'll be starting right off the bat for sure.

Thanks for sharing this! I had heard of Ec before but never explained quite as well as this. My son also peed when the diaper was removed but it never occurred to me that it was a sign he did not enjoy being wet. Eventually he got used to it and potty training was long and hard since he would not say anything even if his underwear was wet. I believe that girls experience a bit more diaper discomfort because of their anatomy and therefore are a bit quicker to train but even my son had he had the opportunity when he was a newborn, might have continued to naturally lean towards staying dry. I’m definitely trying this if I have another kid!

I have a 31 year old stepson who has been my child since he was 16 months old. So, although I did not give birth to him, he's my son in every sense of the word. Due to a very hostile and uncooperative birth mother our custody of him was very limited. Even though, over his summer vacation when he was 2 1/2 I toilet trained him and told his mother to pay attention and not to screw it up! That all being said, I'm hoping to be a grandmother and I am very interested in EC! I'm TECHNICALLY not a mom, but consider myself to be as close to one as possible and I watched your post until the end! Very well done and lots of straight forward and useful information. Congratulations, your daughter is beautiful.

You are such a good attentive mom. My son is 19 months old and I still can barely understand him. Though he can sing half of the alphabet right. (I'm pretty proud of that.) I tried to show him some baby sign language, but he always had a problem with his hands being restricted. He would scream bloody murder at being swaddle. The nurses would keep swaddling him and I would undo it and he would calm down. Anyway I'll stop rambling on.

    Elimination communication.
I didn't learn about it until I had my second child, and I was too overwhelmed with everything to consider it. I have done a little bit of elimination communication with my 2nd, 3rd, though not my 1st or 4th.
I do personally know a couple of families who use it exclusively with all of their children from birth, one had three children the last I talked to them before they moved and we lost contact.
it's an awesome practice, but I only think I'd be able to be successful at it if I had known about it and started with my oldest when I didn't have other children to attend and to focus on as well.

My 2 month old is also using EC and she loves it! Big smile after each elimination!

A mother of two, and aunt of at least four, great aunt to 6, I have never heard of EC or Baby signing. Maybe it’s my generation, but it seems really out there. I’m not knocking it, just commenting on how alien the concept is to me, but clearly you are getting results. I was fortunate with my own children as they both self potty trained by about 13 - 14 months. My daughter hated a wet diaper, and quickly learned how to break free from hers, as soon as she learned the potty was for the business, she used it. My son was a streaker, constantly stripping off, we had to get him familiar with potty, but they also went to a day mother, so they learned in part from the older children.

My daughter is almost 7 weeks old and I felt like she was ready to start this with because she is doing the whole potting on the changing table and using three diapers in one changing thing. I had a baby goat who potty trained herself so I had already mentioned to hubby that I'd like to try this with our little human. On to amazon to find the toilet seat reducer now, lol. Just subscribed after seeing my first video of yours. Thank you for sharing! And your baby is adorable💗👶

I don't have kids yet but when I do im definitely doing this with them! I've been babysitting since I was old enough, because I love kids, but I've always though about how it couldn't possibly be comfortable being in a diaper. I love this because you're so right that parents can tell what they're babies cry means and that typically a baby will pee when the diaper comes off.

This was great! Like you I have been surrounded by children for most of my life (three younger siblings, eight older, and eighteen nieces and nephews). I’ve done a lot of babysitting yet I have never heard of this! I hope that someday I have a chance to do this with my future children.

Love the video! Thanks so much for the thoughtful and informative breakdown of your approach. Looks totally do-able! I work as a registered sign language interpreter (and grew up signing with a Deaf sibling), and I couldn’t help but notice your little one signing with her left hand. I wonder if she will be left hand dominant in her life. All the best!!

I also watched all the way to the end as someone without children. I think it is fascinating how babies and animals communicate. I am currently attempting to figure out cues for when my pet needs to eliminate. If I remember correctly, Buddy also does elimination communication.
I love your channel and the stories you share here. :)
