I’ve watched this so many times and it’s still awesome inspiring to see. John John should’ve won with that last wave though but the high line on Kelly’s first wave was the difference in the first scores

Yeah unfortunately the wave size, positioning on the wave and a few other things that we wouldn't really think to notice factor into the score. A lot of the time what might look more exciting to a spectator might not be as technical or difficult which is what goes into scoring the heats.
Kelly got the 10 just for being Kelly, the judges do that again and again.

Lots of things, deepness in the barrel, sorry, wave tunnel as a lot of non surfers like to call it, verticalness of the manoeuvre, the number of high scoring manoeuvres on a ride, the list goes on, but it's really judged by experienced surfers who know how difficult certain manoeuvres are to do in various parts of the wave.
If you make the wave it's a 10. Wipeout without dying it's a 5. Die and it's a 4.
You can't even see what they're doing most of the time when they are in the tube. It seems like whaleshit to me.

Does anyone other than myself believe if Andy Irons could have kept it together and focused like he had between 03’ and 05’ he would have put a serious dent in Slater’s World Championships?
And the irons would have, and could have, but he wasn’t there so it’s kind of like an alternative universe. Today, I mean yesterday, after Kelly won pipelined with a masterful finale, he acknowledged that Andy Irons inspired him to keep on going all these years. Kelly is seven days short of 50 years old and he wins pipeline. I don’t think Andy would’ve done that! But Andy was fabulous! The best competition Kelly ever faced Year after year.

Slater was a little higher. John navigated more and was barreled longer
Awesome heat, I wanted to check out the comments to see if anyone else thought that JJF won the heat. No offense to KS but watched this heat several times in a relaxed state and without any left brain analysis and every time I come to the conclusion that JJF won. I have never seen a heat like this where every ride looked like a replay because the waves are so perfect and the surfers are so good that they perform perfectly too. But in my deeper mind and in my heart I believe JJF won.

May be the judging Wasn’t fair, but John John’s last wave was not a 10 as everyone keeps saying here erroneously. If you are a righteous judge, you don’t give someone a 10 when they grab the rail at the end right before emerging from the pipe. Holding the rail at the beginning as you drop and turn, they allow it, I wouldn’t for a 10, but they do. But no way are you getting a 10 when you grab the rail at the end. I’m not favoring either one of these guys, maybe John John should’ve won, God only knows, but he sure as hell didn’t earn a 10 on the final wave. What he did I can only dream of, but it’s not a 10.
