it's funny when they let the "smaller" waves go by.. I am thinking to myself, "that would be the wave of my life."

the weird part is that with how dialed in their boards are and how long they’ve been surfing these types of waves, you adapt and start to get used to it. in two trips to Hawaii I eventually caught a friendly 9ft wave on an 8’0 beak nose gun at the Bay. that’s being on that island for 20 days total. so much of it is location, timing and athletic ability...many people have it-just not like KS n JJF tho haha...

I'm not going to judge this but just to say that I'm really glad I watch this two legends drop this heat live.
I think if John John surfed his first wave at the end he would’ve gotten a 10. I don’t even know how you judge those waves. It’s impossible to say they got it wrong because it’s all an opinion at that point.
Slater’s high line on his first wave was the point of difference. But I’m i agreement. Judging this heat would be a nightmare. This could have gone either way. Easily.
IMO: The nightmare is when they're clearly biased, this was well judged (not as clearly biased as a lot of regional or sponsored events can be). Judges get a lot of looks (replays) if they choose (and are hopefully not too influenced by a head judge (who can be biased)). If you watch those first 2 rides over (say 5 views) each, you'll see Slater's drop slightly more technical without hand, control, smoothness, etc., high line in the barrel as Pots mentions, and his exit is more confident, but a bit of a claim at the end (where JJF is more in a defensive stature). Easy 10 for Slater, could have been a lower 9 or high 8 for JJF (and I'm a super fan of JJF). 1st waves are often scored low, so they both got high scores IMO.

I wouldn’t want to be the guy who has to judge a contest between these two. No matter what you do or how, someone won’t like it. These guys are complete consummate professionals. Incredible!

one of the best heats of all time. I remember watching this live..... the day just stopped, and I was glued to my screen watching the 'highlight reel'. Sick waves, perfect drops.
Watching this every year before the chopes contest, never gets old, speechless everytime again

Honestly watched this heat like over ten times, its my favourite heat to get me hyped to surf!
I haven't surfefd in two years cuz I'm getting kind of old and tired. But I'm sitting here at Pacific Beach Pier watching the surf and this heat and it got me stoked to start paddling out again.

I remember watching this with my brother live....and we both had the same exact reaction, "dude....did we just saw the greatest heat of all time??" LOL its great that WSL channel uploaded this with the same title.
No matter when you watch the heat, it's always amazing to watch 🤙
After watching Kelly's 10 point ride over 100 times I have concluded, it was a true miracle sent by a true magician of tube riding. Hats off to the champion 🏆 taking nothing away from John who pulls a rabbit out of the hat to even the score but only one surfer can advance. So intense for the judges when every wave is a 10 but I think they eventually get it right in the end even when only the width of a hair is the difference

Kelly's 9.77 was overscored, and last JJF's wave was a 10 no doubt. But anyway epic heat !
@@BarbarraBay it felt that way to me as well... it seems kelly got overstored and john got slightly underscored... to me john seemed smoother and letting go of rail...

Agree. Kelly’s 9.77 was over scored for sure. More like an 8.5. JJ underscored on every wave really.
Happy with the Kelly win but I don't know how you can separate those first two waves. Both 10s in my eyes

Disagree as it was a slightly smaller and less heavy wave. Go back and compare it to those first two waves, they are way heavier.

@@levipenno6868 agree, not taking anything away from Kelly's waves, but JJ tube was also technical, adjusting his approach in the barrel. I think a tie was a fair result
Tied score in my opinion. It is difficult to say who won. Both surfed excellent, and there can only be one semi-final winner to surf against Medina.

@@wsl I have been critical of new developments in WSL but when the waves are heavy like Chopes or Chile it's a really exciting time watching the best get totally shacked.

If jjf first wave was a 9.90 his last wave was clearly better and longer than that. To me based off that his last wave was underscored.. there is a lot more to say but that is just that
such clear favoritism by the judges toward kelly....John 100% won that heat.

Kelly is the man but John won that in my eyes. I think Johns first wave could have been a 10 as Kelly’s wasn’t Better. His last should have definitely got the score as well. Oh well sick heat either way

Best wave of the heat at 32:09 ! I don’t know how that was not a 10, the wave spit about 4 times!!!
My issue is with judge #2, who felt it necessary to leave his mark, on the "best heat ever". While being one of the two judges who scored JJ's last bomb, as only a 9.8, he was also the only judge to score JJ's first wave under 9.9, which one judge gave a 10. If JJ's first, &/or last ones, were only 9.8's in Judge 2's book; then exactly how could Kelly's first wave be perfect?
I remember watching this thinking this is the greatest heat ever. And the finals right after with Gabriel and Kelly, had it not been for this heat right here...would have been up there in consideration for amazing matchups

That 9.77 from Kelly was maybe an 8.5 max compared to the other waves. I love slater but sometimes I think he gets inflated scores.

@@existinguser7788 comparing to other 10s in the contest isn’t really relevant. Conditions can change from one heat to the next.
When both waves could be potential 10s back to back like that, but Slater’s very clearly shows more difficulty by dropping in with no rail grab and being that high on the face inside the barrel and around the foam ball, they have to score his higher.

Both surfed mentally and honestly I could have seen that go either way. However, I will say while John's last wave was long, I think it may have lacked the heaviness factor the previous rides boasted, which is why it didn't get the 10.
