This is extremely true. It's not a gun problem it's a people problem. The firearm is a tool, nothing more. The person behind it gives the gun its purpose, whether it be hunting, sport shooting, self-defense etc. It's like blaming a pencil for making a spelling mistake.

That's a good analogy. The gun is a tool but the person behind it is making a mistake in using said tool. @Okay Culture isn’t biological from the start. It is Geographical and socioeconomic, then SOMETIMES biology plays a part, not physically but mentally and emotionally.
By culture, I think people refer to mental stability and socioeconomic status. The poor will do anything to become successful, including violent crime. After that comes mental health. America has some of the most violent, and some of the most depressed people around. Combine that with the sheer amount of guns in the country, and it is easy for the wrong person to get their hands on one, legally or not.

Because of language problems I wasn't sure if it was real. So the general stands next to me and tells me to trow it at some objesct about 10 yards away. I pull the pin and trhpw it. He also shot a few canteens with live rounds on range day which is less relevant but rare here in UK. Good fun.

Blanks can kill for sure. Actor Jon-Erik Hexum found that out on the set of the 1984 TV series, Cover Up. He held the pistol to his temple when he jokingly played Russian roulette with a pistol loaded with blanks. The wadding from the blank drove a bone fragment from his skull into his brain which led to massive hemorrhaging. He died a week later. People unfamiliar with firearms naively think blanks are non-lethal.

@@richardtruesdell8289 technically, yes. Specifically, it was a squib round. Basically a dummy round with no powder and no primer was used for close up shots so that the audience would see a "real" bullet. The powder was properly removed. However, the onset supervisor neglected to remove the primer. The primer had enough power to push the slug from the cartridge and into the barrel, but not out. Then, they loaded the gun with "blanks" for the "smoke and fire" of a shot. Since they didn't check the pistol, the "blank" cartridge had enough power to push the wedged slug out of the barrel, though not at max velocity. However, it was enough to be deadly.

Well, my favorite clip was the last one. Not because someone got justifiably shot, but because the guy defending himself DID EVERYTHING RIGHT. He had a restraining order (which we see did no good), he moved at his own expense across town, he had his carry pistol on him even though it was 5am, and he was telling the attacker to get down and was backing away the entire time. While a rabid DA may still want to charge the guy with some kind of crime because the attacker was known to him (which is what would happen where I live), the camera footage should help any jury decide quickly that the guy wasn't trying to be a hero, wasn't trying to "kill", and wasn't playing cop. He chose at the last possible minute to try and minimize the shot, bringing it down somewhat. Not the best call in my opinion, but it did the job, and he kept himself ready should that not be enough. He did a great job, and I'm hoping that he isn't suffering from the trauma of having to do that.

Yeah but now it'll become a legal problem, and the attacker can sue for damages, given the right judge, jury and prosecution, the defending shooter in that last part could get screwed over big time, when I was in high-school back in 2001 or 2002 our dare officers even said if given a choice between shooting to kill or to injure, every one of those officers said shoot to kill, it's less paperwork in the end and there is nobody to testify against you as an injured party, they did stress the fact to avoid unnecessary loss of life but if you feel the need to draw a firearm in fear of your own life then follow through to the end, or don't even think about carrying or pointing a firearm to begin with, the simple act of feeling threatened enough to have to pull a firearm is enough for most cops to understand the loss of life from an assailant, of course they need all the info for reports and stuff, but most generally it is an easy proof of self defense for most situations, it would be interesting to find out exactly how the rest of that evening played out, with cops and legal stuff...

However, the context being stalking (which statistically almost always ends in horrible violence to the victim), plus a restraining order, plus the guy having a knife in his waistband, allllll adds up to this guy just trying to trick this guy into putting the gun down so he could stab him.

That blank to the head had me remember something from almost 25 years ago, when I did mandatory military service in Germany. During a training exercise, a few of us were manning a guard post and were pretty bored, when a non-com turned up, dripping fake blood everywhere. So after showing we learned our first-aid stuff, two of us then carried him to the medic tent, quite some distance away. A few of the others, even more bored, started playing around with the guns. None of us had any ammunition, but when one guy pointed a gun at another's face, just a foot away, suddenly there was a "pop" and that other guy got white as a sheet. Turns out the sarge had left his gun when pretending to be unconcious, and had some of the green things loaded that make some mediocre noise, but are pretty harmless otherwise. Just then the company commander was spotted being on his way to us, so the people involded hastily sprayed some deodorant and waved it around the room to hide the smell of burnt powder. Then we put all the guns neatly together, but were still chewed out as we had miscounted and had missed one of one of the guys that had gone with the sarge. Had the sergeant had loaded anything else, that could have ended pretty badly. And the guys taking the sarge away should have taken their and his guns with them. This was all the rules of gun safety at once, adding "guns are no toys", "don't play with other people's guns", and "keep your gun with you". I don't think anyone involved or watching this did any stupid shit with guns again.

While doing my mandatory service at the Bundeswehr, I went in as an extra for some extended training exercise of the new soldiers fresh out of the basic training. Prior to the training days, we were all instructed several times to always handle blank fire rounds as if they were live rounds. Especially, not to toy around with the guns, not to aim directly at anyone at any given moment, not to restrain any comrades and absolutely no "execution" plays.
It was the second day of the extended training where they had to get one of the freshmen into the hospital for treatment of a blast trauma...
Later that day I heard that some idiots tied his hands behind his back and fired a blank from a G36 (.223 Remington) with the muzzle less then a meter next to his ear. As far as I know he did not suffer any lasting injuries at least.
Luckily that was the only incident in this training. On the good side, I had the opportunity to blank-fire a G3 way above the heads of the new recruits to simulate an attack. 7.62x51 is a lot beefier compared to the sound of the G36 we were used to.

    • @danielschuett
      @danielschuett 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Shadow_Lunatale If I remember correctly (the time is a bit of a haze, due to sleep deprivation and the time that has passed since then), that incident was at the end of basic training (2 of the 10 total months we had to serve back then) We had the G3 then. The G36 was being rolled out, but as supply and logistics, we still had the old ones. Of course, we had been told how (not) to handle guns, but 18 to 20 year old boys bored out of their minds tend to forget things. And then, as T7, we didn't have much experience with the guns, just had target practice a few times, and had just been parked at the guard post to not get in the way. So nobody expected any ammunition of any kind to be around. So this turned out to be a great lesson about any gun potentially being loaded. If it had been a real blank instead of those green ones, I think the guy with his face in front of the muzzle would have gotten some burns or worse and everyone in the room would have had their ears ringing. And it would probably have been heard outside. That's not to say those training dummies were totally harmless. I think I have slightly damaged my hearing when I was still fumbling with my protection while the rest of the squad was firing all at once.
And to explain the "T7" I mentioned earlier, for anyone not familiar with the German mustering system (back then): Before you were drawn for service, you were examined medically. Then you werer either assigned T1, T2, or T3 as being (mostly) fit for service, or T5 for being unfit and exempted from service. At least in my time, therer was also T7, which meant you were practically unfit, but not so much as to be exempt and still be usable in some support position. I think what did it for me was my bee allergy, but as the group had mixed problems, they had to find the least common denominator. Training was *very* basic, you'd only get to shoot your gun a few times, had bivouac indoors, would not get worked to exhaustion but on the other hand, missed the fun stuff, too, like shooting machine guns or throwing grenades. And your assignment later would be the most boring one possible (in my case: picking small items from storage or sorting and putting things away, in between alot of waiting for transport to deliver or pick up stuff).

I used to live in a rough neighboorhood too, so I went medieval and started wearing a home-made shirt of butted-ring chainmail under my hoddies, or in my coats. it actually saved me some pain once, as the leather of the coat plus the resistance from the rings stopped an incoming blade to the guts. I had one heck of a bruise and a slight knick, but apart from that I was pretty much unharmed. The guy who stabbed me, however, was high as fuck at the time and turned himself in shortly after because he was sure he'd killed me!!!

I like to think that the butted mail did help: the area the blade came in was much larger on the outside of the jacket than on the inside, and the rings were hardly forced apart.
Maybe I was simply lucky. Maybe the blow wasn't as powerfull as I perceived it. (Edit: the mail was also a six-in-one pattern maybe this also helped.)
There are historical examples of butted mail existing (because if you're poor and can't afford the time and labor an armourer has to put into rivetting your armour together, then you go for the next best thing!), but of course, as you pointed out, it doesn't hold a candle to rivetted mail.
Nowadays butted mail is too often used for fancy cosplay, I agree, but as a reenactor, I can assure you that butted mail has it's place in certain time periods, and on certain "characters".
In any case, thanks for your reply! Have a good one!

The last clip is my favorite because of two things
1: how immediately the attacker folded and started to cry “OW”
2: the amazing trigger discipline, he has the gun out but aimed down at the ground, giving off the warning that I will shoot you if you don’t back up.

gave him 2 cahnces to stop to. Raised the gun pointed at his neck or face. A clear threat of "I AM READY YOU BLAST YOU, LAST WARNING"

That last case is probably also a good example for how to handle that situation after the aggressor was incapacitated. It looked like the defender was fingering for his phone afterwards to call for help - police and ambulance. Mind you that, if you have a Knive and attack someone with a gun and are shot down, you will likely not get first aid before you are unconscious. It is too risky, especially if the person with the gun is the only person that could aid. Also do not stalk people!
