    Grant, you might want to update this tutorial soon. there's a new dyntopo brush setting called "TopoRake" being developed that try to create a polygon line following the direction of your brush stroke during the mesh alteration. This can help A LOT in defining edges to process later

    A good video, and also good that you said "Try to make you hardsurface models with some other method than sculpting..." - because in Blender there is just the cutters missing in sculpting mode like we have it in Zbrush or 3D-Coat. The reason we also know: The performance of the algorithms is currently not good enough, unfortunately.

    • @grabbitt

      Yes. Master xeon seems to do very well with his stuff but it makes more sense to use things like boolean tools and your fast carve :)

    Tha k you, this was very helpful for my project. I was using a Gamecube model for future use as a personal 3D Print, and I wanted to sculpt/edit it to not only be a higher quality, but to have an easier painting reference for edges and designs only present with clever use of textures.

    With Dyntopo, I feel like the easiest route would be to start the normal way and make a "low poly" mesh, with the hard surfaces where you need them, and a rough approximation of the shapes you'll need to sculpt manually. Bonus points, this will save time snake hooking or grabbing more mesh out to work with. Then just use dyntopo to sculp your organic details, careful not to accidentally squish the hard edges.

  • @fearcry
    @fearcry 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Sculpting is good for organic modeling not for hard surface... Nice video, thank you for sharing Grant.

    Blender can do straight lines for sculpting. If you go to the brush settings in the section called stroke you can change the setting to line and get straight lines.

      when sculpting with dynotopo all the uv's get removed anyway, It's usually best to retopo it with the same detail but now it will be clean, then you can use the new mesh for the nrm maps.
      I wouldn't suggest using a sculpt for a nrm map unless your a pro at sculpting, otherwise it won't look all that great.
      Take it from someone who sculpted a torso and then spent the next 4 hours attempting to unwrap 2m faces to bake it to my low poly mesh. after I was done I realized that my sculpting isn't super precise and now I'm remaking it by modeling over the sculpt.
      Once I'm done I'll use my new clean mesh for nrm maps.
      Slow ik but at least it will look amazing up close.

      I actually have both (Msp and SB). But i find that for drawing and painting , on screen tablet works best and for sculpting a drawing tablet instead. So i switched to my Surface book and paired it with Intuos pro. Its working great for me.
      If you only sculpt or model, SB + intuos might be a better choice. If you also draw, id recommend MSP.

    These aren't hard-surface edges, these are sketch hard-surface edges. You need precise tools line curve-trim to perform a hard-surface object in sculpting workflows. Blender doesn't have one yet.

    • @grabbitt

      you can actually pinch along a curve

    that was so painful to watch, you don't need to suffer that much when sculpting in blender
    scrape brush with flat curve preset will behave like trim dynamic from zbrush
    locking area or view plane will allow you to make perfectly flat surface
    flat brush in blender is bad and almost completely useless
    don't use relative detail mode, brush detail mode superior in any way

    • @grabbitt

  • @mysticmarks
    @mysticmarks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are a lot of accurate comments already, but what i see is a need to decide on technique to model with. This could easily be modeled with very little vertices. Learn "2d profile extrusion" as a method and grid and snap options. There are many approaches to model something. Blender does just fine. Also, you should build a template that fits the project. If you plan a template out, a lot of things become easier.
