Before that guy on the RM 450 that was stock length made it up the impossible hill climb in Andler I was saying the first person to make the hill would be on a stock length bike. I think for that one I just saw how much people were getting bucked but could carry a lot of momentum into the rocks from the bottom so I figured suspension and handling would matter more cause the only way someone was gonna make it up was by putting all the power down at the bottom and jumping over the worst part of the rocks. The guy on the RM proved my point like a year after I said that 😂

Another great video! I did a little local hill climbing when I was a young lad. It was fun, you had to make really quick decisions and didn’t always get to choose your path when the rear started bouncing side to side! Thanks for an interesting topic.

The big reason you commonly see large displacement hill climb bikes is the historical precedent set by early hill climbing. In the earliest days, road legal motorcycles with bigger displacements were converted to climb hills. From 1900-1960, there weren't dirt bikes capable of supplying enough power. At the same time, road legal bikes were designed for rough roads were many roads were actually dirt. Many early riders competed on essentially unmodified, Indians & harleys. Because of all this, the sport actually started with larger displacement bikes, with 450s & 500s becoming popular in the past couple decades as a good entry into the sport.

For sure, I mean, back then, I would argue that the concept of "dirt bike" didn't really exist... It was just... "motorcycle"

My Maternal grandfather was a hill climber and cross country racer on Indian motorcycles in the 1920’s and 30’s in Southern California, Nevada and Colorado at Pikes Peak. That is until he lost part of his right foot in a crash while racing the Reno to Vegas in the 30’s. Grandma put her foot down demanding enough was enough. Lol!

I really know the balance between the front wheel taking off and loosing traction being lost in the woods on a mountain bike in tuscany.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the impact being at an angle has on weight distribution and traction; and why an extended swingarm helps with that.

Is there any rule saying you have to use a reciprocating engine? What about having to use wheels to accelerate?
I wonder if you could use a jet engine or a piston-driven propellor to push yourself up the hill without having to worry about traction.
Electric motors are also an interesting option

Call it wonky but I’ve always built what I wanted. Whether a downhill BMX bicycle with a road bike crank set for it’s bigger chain wheel or my saw for cutting seasoned oak for grilling only. Don’t get me started on air cooled boxer engines. I could build one in my sleep.

Yz 490 lower front forks, with electronic hub from ev bike and battery on from fork wheels, and lengthening rear swing arm and track assembly in place of rear wheel i like bushwaker tire tread , now you have a hill climber :)

if you hae never been to a proper hill climb you should go, its amaazing......goon climbers as an example is a really great channel and those boys are f'in wild - funny story though, they hold this bash annually at his monster hill in some woods and around 20k turn up to watch it, crazy event filled with parties and maniacs, loads of modded vehicles failed on the hill - i then saw cody webb, boss daddy, ,ryder le blanc and a few others goto the same hill on their enduro bikes and clean it....

To answer the question in the title, Dirt Bike Hill Climbing is Highest Up The Wall*, for bikes. Forget all the technical details, it's just a game to see who can leave their mark highest up the hill...
*:- Highest Up The Wall is an extremely juvenile game, involving competitive urinating. Aim of the game, is in the name.
