- For decades now, Cartoon Network has been a memorable part of many of our lives, myself included. It's hard to say definitively, but it's a common opinion that they've experienced a significant decline followed by a respectable comeback. This video takes a look at the situation and attempts to identify reasons behind it.

I've seen all the comments and you're absolutely right. Toonami was big for the network and absolutely should have been mentioned in this video. I never watched it personally so it was easy for me to overlook it. Thanks to everyone who pointed that out, hopefully this comment is a step forward in fixing this injustice.
Hey Company Man are you going to talk about the decline of Plymouth Car auto industry?
You did not watch the toonami block?
ive never even heard of it
Do adult swim
Moreso than that you forgot to mention AKA Cult Toons, one of the most weird and experimental things ever featured on the network.
The logo change for me signifies the end of the best era. You can't beat the lineup of Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow and Chicken, Sheep in the Big City, Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd and Eddy, I am Weasel, Samurai Jack, What's New Scooby Doo...
The What’s New Scooby-Doo Theme Song is still a banger and a half
Some of the best cartoons ever made in my opinion.
CZsWorld Billy and Mandy too.
CZsWorld the regular show/early Ben 10 alien force era was awesome though
Amazing World of Gumball and We Bare Bears were the only two shows I continued to watch past that era.

It's not that way anymore, this would be true if it were pre-2017 but the schedule has really opened up and leveled out since then.
Its safe to say CN best shows were created from late 90s to early 2010s thus making it the golden age imo.
To me the Golden Age of Cartoon Network was late 1990s to 2004. No disrespect for Adventure Time or Regular Show

"They may have overdone it with Teen Titans Go."
Nickelodeon: -continues to beat the dead horse that is Spongebob-
They were both pretty bad, I am unsure if Spongebob had as bad a schduel as teen titans go's in recent history besides it being on like those special 24/7 days. I do think they do it pretty bad tho.
At least SpongeBob is back on it's feet now and was good at the beginning.
Lol they beat that dead bourse good
@@njmaag Which? TTG or Spongebob?
Seriously, meanwhile the good shows like looney toons, Doug, Ren and Stimpy were left in the dust.
Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends was honestly one of the staples of my childhood
Yeah the whole "fall" was pretty much my childhood and those shows were awesome. It's all subjective I guess
@@emmajohnson7364 I was a teen when Foster's home came out. I loved it. I think most people agree that the fall was after Foster's home, when the live action started.

-Morning: Teen Titans Go
-Afternoon: The Amazing World of Gumball

I haven't had cable in years but I'm glad Gumball is still going. It was their best show after Regular Show. I recently saw a schedule for CN and Teen Titans GO was playing for something like 30 out of 36 slots for the day for a whole week. I wasn't aware of any special broadcast going on. It was nuts.

We got CN in 95 in my area during my senior year of high school. 25 years later I still watch the channel more than any other channel.
@@spiderman4x Even now? Most of the good 2010s cartoons are over now.

spiderman4x they got teen titans go gumball and some other new cartoons. I feel you too I barely watch tv since COVID came. Were growing up. Tbh i miss the cartoons and shit. It really made my childhood
I think their best era was probably in the 90's and early 2000's. They were still airing a lot of the older cartoons while also bringing in a lot of new content, plus making their own kind of universe with the commercials of all the animated characters together in a city. When the original shows started reaching the end, they kind of released a lot of low quality shows and even Toonami was cancelled, so less action anime made it onto the network. Then they just started spamming TTG, erratic release schedules for other shows, cancellations of half way decent shows, and the network was basically unwatchable at that point.
I'd even venture the era before CN Real and directly after it was pretty good too.
I’d go with the CN City era (2000-2007)
I still miss the old cartoons. It's sad that they aren't readily available to watch anymore.
ah the days of ATHF and Sealab 2021
I gotta say I was bored as hell with the older cartoons (born in 91) - scooby doo, flintstones and the jetsons were meh but when they started playing Tom and Jerry, Popeye, Bugs bunny and shit I’d usually go do something else unless I was bored out of my skull

I'm crying. You always pull at the heart strings for all 90's kids.
But....the moment you mentioned Cartoon Cartoons. The way they'd say the catchphrase "Cartoon Cartoons!" the cadence. Everyone would quote it. You know exactly how it sounds. I was exactly like you. Cartoon Network, Disney, and Nick on rotation all day. That's how my cousin and I spent most of our summer vacations as kids. Fantastic video dude, this one really hit the feels super hard.
I know that it's overplayed and annoying to say "kids will never understand or experience x" but seriously, the *peak* of cartoons was 90 - 2000's. It was still being pioneered, it was something new never seen before just for kids. I don't want to condescend kids today, but I really wish they could feel the magic we got to feel because it was so neat.
The peak of cartoons was definitely in the 1940s and 1950s.
AGREED. My 6yo niece didn't know what Blues Clues was until I showed her. Then she showed me YT "Slime makeup mixing" videos. Smdh Sad! ✌💗
I have fond memories watching classic HB shows and Looney Tunes shorts on CN back in the day, and also of watching movies on Cartoon Theatre. It was through that latter that I watched The Iron Giant for the first (and so far, only) time in my life, at age 11, and it's probably one of my favorite movies of all time. I can't believe that Brad Bird went from that amazing film to cliched, ugly crap that Pixar puts out.
@@robgronotte1 Correct if you're talking about cartoons in general, but if you're focusing on TV cartoons, then it would be from about the 80s through the early aughts.
@@音楽ギャル I'm both a 90s and aughts kid. Glad to see at least one person who agrees with me that Pixar and CG animation in general are total garbage. I know that's not a popular opinion, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I actually seriously considered a career in animation about the time I started high school. I wanted to bring back traditional animation with traditional techniques like traditional ink and paint, hand inking, successive exposure, multiplane cameras, and the like. I'm so glad now that I didn't because Hollywood won't touch traditionally animated features with a ten-foot pole, and what traditional animation we do get on TV is generally as rotten as CG. Hollywood is where good animation goes to die. At least there's still some good anime out there, and enough good traditional animation from the pre-Pixar/DreamWorks era to keep me happy.
Toonami brought anime to America. This was a huge oversight. Tom was so cool and Toonami was one of the best parts of after school for me.
Yes I was very shocked he did not mention Toonami. It is the sole reason why I began watching Anime. Smh!
@Kenji azure Lmao how tho?
So surprised he didn’t mention anime, it is the big reason that Cartoon Network died off. Crunchyroll was so easily accessible back then as well.

The CN City era, from 2004 - 2006 was OUR HIGH POINT and was something that had a big impact on us ESPECIALLY when we watched some of those re-runs of Cartoon Cartoon shows

Cartoon network is just like a Saturday morning block but 24-hour with a nighttime block that shows adult animations
I'm very disappointed that Toonami was *nowhere* in this video. It, along with Adult Swim, most assuredly brought anime into the more mainstream spot it is today.
Same hat. I get that kid!Company Man wasn’t into Adult Swim, but like. Completely NOTHING on Toonami? Really? Toonami’s revival is why we have Samurai Jack season 5, for god’s sake!
That's right, Toonami was a real hit back in the day, one of the main reasons why CN was so huge in the early 2000's
Correct, and Toonami getting shuffled around to just Saturday night and later assimilated into Adult Swim and/or removed altogether was a definite falling point for CN as a whole.
Yeah, Toonami was a massive oversight, along with not talking about the actual significance of Adult Swim whatsoever. This was a pretty crappy video by Company Man standards.
Agreed. It opened up anime to an entire generation.
And made DBZ what it is.
This has brought me closure, i always wondered why these pre 2009 shows disappeared and i was a bit disturbed by it as a kid. Change as a kid is one of the toughest things to go through.

Though there aren't as many quality cartoons as there use to be but I'm still moving on to concurrent releasing cartoons like Ollie's Pack, Cupcake and Dino: General Services, Mao Mao Heros of Pure Heart and Unikitty. For those who are looking for fun, quality and somewhat character driven cartoons I do recommend those four that I mention that are still airing new episodes or re-airing older episodes that are quite good. But everyone of them goes to show that they are more then just cartoons but are works of creativity with passion behind them.

Lol I’m 14 and grew up watching teen titans go not the og one so I wondered why it got so much hate.
@@suckyomom6179 Well it not just that the original is way better because of the art style, huge plots and awesome action is why people hate TTG. It because TTG is just awful in general since it over uses cheesy jokes, tries insulting the audience with fourth wall breaking, too awkwardly weird at times and always likes to constantly shove its message of the episode down your throat too much in the most obnoxious ways possible rather then be creative to have fun or create a story with that message. It does have cool or fun moments here and there on rare occasions which is the best thing I can honestly say about it but the overall quality is garbage. I mean TTG probably can't be the same or similar to the original and I get that but at the same time for the most part they aren't making it enjoyable to watch. I wouldn't mind if it was say similar to Unikitty or Spongebob where it was mostly exaggerative/fun with some continuity or is character driven and a lot of people would probably dislike it a lot less but I think they're doing a bad job intentionally since they acknowledge it time to time. Same goes for the reboot of the powerpuff girls or Ben 10 which are embarrassing stains for such amazing cartoon franchises and CN just doesn't care so I'm disappointed at them. Powerpuff Girls Z was the reboot that the franchise deserved and it was a great one that they should of left it on that if they can't make any more good continuations but nope. Also on the rare occasion they do air the original Teen Titans as a throw back on that alternating theme channel but you got to catch it.

*Cartoon Network 1992-2004:* perfect, absolutely perfect. They had a lot of variety in the schedule, they had amazing originals, they had a *HUGE* library of Cartoons. They were truly on top of the world, and they also helped anime become very popular thanks to Toonami.
*Cartoon Network 2005-2008:* good. The new programs were weaker and the channel no longer had their pre-1990s stuff, but they were still good.
*Cartoon Network 2009:* awful, Cartoon Network focused on *LIVE-ACTION* more than Cartoons, which makes no sense for a channel named *CARTOON* Network.
*Cartoon Network 2010-2012:* Cartoon Network managed to become great again during this era. CN during this era was more experimental, and the network tried to push the limits of what a kids show can have during this era, as many of their programs were rated TV-PG. It also has Regular Show, my all time favorite CN show.
*Cartoon Network 2013-2015:* Cartoon Network was middling during this time period. The network would start to focus on TTG a lot during this time period, and by this time period, Cartoon Network had no 22 minute action shows beside acquired anime. Plus, Adventure Time and Regular Show would go downhill during this time period (thankfully, Regular Show improved during the 7th season), and the scheduling got worse during this time period.
*Cartoon Network 2016-2017:* terrible, this era was the worst for CN in my opinion. TTG at this point would take up nearly 100% of CN's schedule, and not only that, TTG was the only show CN advertised, and CN's new programs were terrible reboots of good shows, and those reboots were in an attempt make those franchises replicate TTG. CN also lost the rights to Pokemon because CN lost respect for anything that isn't TTG. CN also treated any show that wasn't TTG terribly, even Gumball.
*Cartoon Network 2018-present:* They are meh at this point. They have thankfully improved their schedule and started putting less emphasis on TTG, which was a great thing CN did, and they started treating their other shows with respect (even airing their older shows on Christmas week 2021), but the reason why they are meh now is because they don't really have anything interesting on anymore, and TTG still airs a lot, but not as much as how it did back in 2017. I am glad CN is improving though.

Personally, throughout all of my rantings about networks failing, one of my main criticisms has always been toward networks lacking that care toward their older shows and I believe that Nickelodeon (and Disney Channel) are both prime examples of this. Over on Nickelodeon, they air something known as The Splat on one of their sister channels Teen Nick. While it is a late night block, Nickelodeon at least has the decency to air their older cartoons even if they're just simply ones from the 90s era. Meanwhile, on something like Cartoon Network, there seems to be a neglect toward their older cartoons. Ever since Boomerang rebranded itself to some horrid modern design, the lack of older cartoons has significantly increased. No more Ed, Edd n' Eddy, no more Powerpuff Girls, no more Camp Lazlo, no more Fosters, ect. You get the point. Boomerang has basically become a place where they air Tom And Jerry for hours along with shows that should air on CN or shows that are just plain horrid. It is true that Boomerang will air some of the older shows at night, but it's often barely anything and airs much later and much shorter than something like The Splat. And you could say that this is a Boomerang problem and no so much a CN problem, but CN doesn't even play shows like Regular Show or Adventure Time anymore despite those shows not even being that old and both ending fairly recently. I just wish that networks would not neglect the shows of their past as it isn't that hard not to do so. Boomerang could easily start their own version of "The Splat" or just simply return themselves back to the version they formerly were, but instead of airing the classic 60s/70s cartoons change it up to 90s/00s to cater toward the new nostalgic audience. That's all I can think to say now, thanks for reading.
that is a very on point issue. they just drop the older shows and effectively (re)start chartering to a new audience group. (who when that 5/10 year cycle) of a network programming will move on because the network is again focusing on the new show for the new group.
That in a time when the older (children and by now also adults) can't really see there shows (unless pirating).
I mean i can see older people (17+) would love to just have exes to the vault that CN has and just see a show in the setting they saw when they where children.
Gaming Wizard bruh you could use this for an essay
I used to love (re)watching Jonny Quest, Swat Kats too!
Then they stopped doing all the old good series and I stopped watching the channel!
by early 2000 I had a PC and P2P was a thing so didn't had to watch 10 min commercial for 20 min content.
At least Hulu has a good amount of older CN shows.
I know this will be unpopular, but 90/early 2000s era shows probably aren't that lucrative. Their target audience would be people with nostalgia for the shows: people in their 20's/30's, who are the least likely to have cable. I think the best option would be to add these to streaming networks. I know personally, every now and then, I'll watch a cartoon I grew up with to see how it turned out, but I just watch it online. I'm not going to flip through my cable guide to see when Dexter's Lab is on and wait until 7PM

I feel like cn will disappear in the near future due to the rise of streaming services and the lack of new shows, also why teen titans go like 24/7.
Same can be said for most of the big cable channels.
They'll just merge with a streaming service then. I think HBOMAX is probably the obvious answer since it's WB
I highly doubt that they will probably make there own streaming service as there’s a lot of good shows coming up the one I’m personally looking forward to is Villainous

This is the network that kick started many people's careers and brought upon a new era of cartoons, cartoons that had actual passion behind them and weren't just seen as products for children. Shows like Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Ed Eddn Eddy, Samurai Jack, etc. On top of that, they revolutionized adult animation and broke the formula of crappy Simpsons knockoffs, by green lighting shows that were dark, edgy, low budget, and highly experimental, shows that would've NEVER been green lit in any other network! And they succeeded! Adult Swim is debatably one of the key factors in shaping "ironic" or "random" humor, something that we see everywhere on the internet nowadays. But even on top of all of that, Cartoon Network played the most important role in bringing Japanese animation to the west! And to say that anime is "big" would be an understatement, it's HUGE! And that wouldn't have been possible without Cartoon Network, Toonami, and Adult Swim! They had a few hiccups throughout the late 2000s, but they still had some classics, like Ben 10, Chowder, and Flapjack. And on the very early 2010s, they gave us Adventure Time, Regular Show, and (one of my personal favorite shows of all time) Sym Bionic Titan!... Which got cancelled... but at least the episodes we got were good?... Point is, Cartoon Network was showing ones again that they were revolutionizing the cartoon industry and bringing something new and exciting to the table!... And now they're just making crappy tumblr calarts cartoons that are unfunny and doomed to fail after one or two seasons... Oh well. Let's just hope they change their game up for the 2020s!
SYMBIOTIC TITAN is so underrated
@@thejaycrewsshow9827 It had a lot of hype when it came out but CN subtly killed it off. If it had just kept going for at least 2 more seasons, the fanbase might be a little bit bigger now. The lost potential that is Symbionic Titan is something that will forever piss me off. Oh well, at least the season we got is still very good, and is currently available on netflix!
Philza?
@@thejaycrewsshow9827 Idk if yall know about the Secret Saturdays League of Super Evil Sidekick Storm Hawks Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 and Starwars the Clone Wars 2010
You know that Genndy Tartavosky went to CalArts right? He worked on Dexter's Laboratory and Symbiotic Titan. Are those shows bad now? The problem with shows like Thundercats Roar is that they took an old IP and slapped it onto a cartoon that had little to do with the original not that it has a simplified art style. CalArts isn't even an animation style to begin with. It's like when the old fans years ago would complain about everything turning into anime and then they would point out examples like Teen Titans and Masters of the Universe - two shows which looked nothing alike.
i honestly want Cartoon Network to make a streaming service already, you know how many great shows were on that service? the toonami, adult swim, and the early shows, I think that’s be the only streaming service I need

I remember being a sheltered homeschooled kid, literally freaking out whenever Adult Swim came on. Like I was genuinely scared of Adult Swim because it wasn't for kids.
What's interesting i used to watch it as a kid with my cousin but as i matured, i realized how imature and gross the humor was and stopped watching. I liked space ghost, Hunger Squad and Family guy, that Birdman court show( I forgot the actual )name but the other shows were trash, most of the humor was just random gore or shitty Sex jokes and toilet humor. I used to ask alot of adults if they watched adults swim but none of them watch, only hormonal teen that giggle at those cheep jokes lol.

The City era was peak.
The loss of those bumpers was a serious bummer for the audience. What's worse, it could have still worked for the new cartoons; the idea of the various shows interacting with each other was not by itself outdated.
How great would it have been to see the casts of Chowder and Flapjack, or Regular Show and Adventure Time, interacting in the city setting?

Back in the 90s CN experienced their highest ratings in their history when Dragon Ball Z was premiering never before seen episodes during the Namek saga. Also it shouldn't be underplayed how big a hand CN played at introducing anime to the US: Sailor Moon, DBZ, are two of the biggest names and most saw them first through CN.
They had a deal with Spirited Away and other Ghibli for a while as well (that was how I found out about it, although apparently Disney was the first to release Spirited Away on US video).
Don't forget how Adult Swim still airs dubbed anime to this day, though in the era of simuldubs, Funimation, Crunchyroll, and Netflix, it matters far less.

I'll always remember the scarring image of the CN schedule from a couple years back where it was almost _all_ TTG all day every day with like maybe a few SU episodes thrown in - it was a dark time for us, lads, hiatuses aren't fun
Ah yes the infamous 99% Teen Titans Go, 1% Steven Universe schedule from 2 years ago, that still gives me nightmares
This has since been revived by MTV - 99% Ridiculousness, some premieres for reality shows, and _15 minutes_ of music videos
During it's prime it had Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, Scooby Doo, Ben 10, Edd Ed n Eddy, Kids Next Door, Teen Titans, Samurai Jack, Grim Adventures Billy Mandy, Justice League, Courage, Fosters Home, and Clone Wars.
They had such a strong lineup of shows during the early-mid 2000s to the point I could watch for hours or even all day until finally a show I wasn't interested came on.
Then those shows got phased out/cancelled/ended and a bunch of newer shows came out that sucked and leaned more towards younger children than pre-teens.
Lightning in a bottle.
**Laughs in Regular show, Adventure Time, Gumball, and Steven Universe**
Batman the brave and the bold was also fantastic

Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends and Codename: Kids Next Door were two of the best cartoons on television. Other than SpongeBob on Nick and Dave the Barbarian on Disney, my favorite cartoons were on Cartoon Network. I remember vividly that drum beat that ended with the whispered, “Cartoon Cartoons!” Such a great time period at the beginning of the fall. Unfortunately, for me, there has never been a rise. It was nice when there was an even amount of old and new content. I miss the late ‘90s Cartoon Network.

"Space Ghost Coast to Coast didn't have a huge impact on the network"??? Dude, it CREATED ADULT SWIM!!!!"
Most of the people that worked on that show were integral to Adult Swim. A lot of the early Adult Swim shows were heavily inspired by SGCTC's style such as Harvey Birdman and Sealab. It's like saying that Dragon Ball Z didn't have an impact on the network. lol.
Space Ghost: Coast to Coast was a great show. Adult Swim wouldn't have been the same without it.
I was just thinking that.
It has been massively influential. It is cited as an inspiration for the Eric Andre show
Fair enough. I should have said it didn't have much of an INITIAL impact.

@mart5610 Agreed. After 2010 I barely watched most of the shows. And after 2015 CN has been dead
You didn't even mention Toonami! That's where so many of us saw our first anime and fell in love with it! I loved their action cartoons around the turn of the decade. Great lineup, even though they all flopped. Generator rex was awesome, Symbiotic titan was cool...
The finale to batman: the brave and the bold will always stick with me, partly from a sense of "wait, it's over? but it can't be! what about equinox? where's the big final battle? It can't end!" but also because it was such a mindfuck to basically break the fourth wall and go "so here's why we're closing up shop."
I spent countless hours on the website, playing flash games. I loved the event they made the beginning of ben 10: alien force out to be, or how the season two finale to that show felt like the equivalent to the avengers movies years later, or that generator rex crossover...

Boomerang only plays any Tom & Jerry, new looney toons, and “new” bad shows and completely cut out the classics
Boomerang is what CN was 20+ years ago.
At least in my country, I think they also overplayed _Grizzly and the Lemmings,_ which it's a CGI cartoon with nice visuals and a simple plot, but also the worst repetitive ending where both of the bear and the numbers of lemmings lost the battle. EVERY. SINGLE. EPISODE. Bruh. Seriously? Why can't Grizzly and the Lemmings just get their happy ending already?

Remember thundercats reboot? And then the reboot to the reboot?
If you actually look at their schedule it kind of bizarre. Most days there like 5 total series in total with it mostly just alternating between Gumball and TT GO.
Is it even profitible ? Do kids really sit through 20 episodes of TT GO a day ? As a kid even I would change channel after like 2-3 repeat episode of a series. And I feel if kids are obsessed with a specific series they must be savy enough to just pull up entire series on stream.
