    What happened to letting people do whatever the hell the want with the vehicles they pay for? Lifted trucks can be lifted properly. People who lift trucks don't give a shit about gas mileage also..Or tire wear. We lift our shit because we like it that way.
    How can you say there is NO real reason for anyone to lift up a truck that's already high? and then claim they have an inferiority complex? What about people that just like lifted trucks?
    I'm a bit disappointed by this ignorant viewpoint you seem to have! Its ok not to like lifted trucks but to say its "dumb" or because of an "inferiority complex" is really ignorant :/

    • @jacksonsmith5238
      @jacksonsmith5238 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      True, but he brings up several valid points that many people who lift their trucks for the looks don't consider. Your friend did some research, and lifting his truck was still worth it to him. To me, the added off road performance outweighs the higher center of gravity, worse drivetrain geometry, decreased stopping distance and cost that it adds to my maintenance. If this video dissuades one person from turning their truck into a pavement pounding poser-mobile, then I am glad it is on TH-cam.

    • @ramairgto72

      You just have to set the lift right and he acts like lifted messes up the truck just leveling it can mess it up you got to do it right the first time. I bought a cat eye chevy from my neighbor and it was leveled a nice truck but he didn’t level it right and when I bought it it messed up 3 months after I bought it but it was already junk looked good but wasn’t worth nothing. My cousin has a 12 inch lift on his d max no problems with it.

    One advantage of a lifted truck in heavy Deer country like in Northern Michigan is that when you hit one, not if, the Deer usually will go under the vehicle instead of over into the windshield. Does much less damage to the front of the truck and greatly minimizes the chance of Bambi joining you in the passenger compartment.

      Probably because he’s pointing at the transfer case calling it a transmission and said tires wear uneven/faster when a vehicle is lifted that’s false you need an alignment after installing a lift and most lifts these days come with and front diff drop so there is minimum wear on the components he is talking about. I used to like this guy but ive noticed he put opinions ahead of facts.

    This should be titled, "Why it's dumb to not lift an IFS truck properly". Offroaders know that lifting a truck with a monobeam front drive axle is much easier and doesn't have as much geometry to consider as does an IFS vehicle. However, if done right, there will be nothing that's going to go wrong with your independent front suspension equipped truck so long as you don't beat on it too hard off road. There are many guys who lift their trucks the right way that enjoy all the benefits of a lifted truck off road and still are able to put hundreds of thousands of miles on their rig when their not on the trail. Lift it right and your truck will be just fine.
    If you are saying that it's just dumb in general to lift a truck then that is just a flat out dumb thing to say. Sure, there is no reason to lift a truck if your going to spend all your time on paved roads; other than you thinking it looks cool. That being said, there are millions of farmers, mobile welding service owners, mobile mechanics, loggers, gas/water/oil well service guys, off-road enthusiasts, park rangers, people stationed in remote areas, families that go camping off the beaten path, etc. all across the world that would vehemently disagree with you that, "It's dumb to lift a vehicle".

      ***** actually your comments are the only ignorant ones here... You say Brendan isn't as smart as the hack in the video, yet you know nothing about him in the first place. Second my comment was and still is correct. "Scotty's point" was made clear, and it wasn't "yea you can lift stuff but its not a good idea to cut corners".... You did read the title right...? Why its dumb to lift a vehicle. I'm pretty sure his point is pretty straight forward there... His hole video did nothing but bad mouth an idiot owned/ lifted truck. Uneven tire wear can happen an any vehicle, diff angle doesn't effect how it works in any way (as little as it is indexed), worse breaks is a joke because they should be upgraded with bigger tires, on and on...... So again 90% of this video is bs. So in all actually zaco, you are the only one with the dumb and wrong comments.

    • @rickykalani2087
      @rickykalani2087 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** OK look smart guy. He ACTUALLY says "why it can be dumb to lift a vehicles suspension"..... Thanks for your correction. From the very start he's WRONG.... You don't " live the suspension". You replace the suspension.... Next, he doesn't say or even imply anything being installed improperly..... He just states all the issues with lifted trucks.... (Which is bs). Next "tires wearing out faster"..... How's that make any sense, a properly lifted truck has proper alingment, which in turn doesn't effect the tires, so he's WRONG again. Next.... (This one made me laugh). Ok I'll just hope that the link you shared whas the wrong page...... Because it deals with mostly caster and camber..... Which is the front tires. Non of that has ANYTHING to do with the angle of the driveshaft. The person is talking about lift blocks which either don't change the rear diff angle at all or very very little. Also blocks don't change the location or angle of the front diff at all.... So hopefully you just posted the wrong link. Every vehicle I've owned has had upgraded breaks for one reason or another. Next you lift trucks..... Not cars. (Haha okok you got me in the " actuallity ". Damn spell check). In all he implies and states all the things that can go wrong with lifted vehicles, and makes them statements. Not telling you things to watch out for, or to prevent. But that's enough technicalities for now.

      +zaco21 you are quoting everything. Get under a truck done right before you start shit. My truck has been lifted on mudding tires and has been just fine for 8 years. Not a damn problem, because it was done right. Unlike the restarted truck in this video. He tried to spend less money by lifting the body rather than getting new coils and shocks. He didn't get a leveling kit. He didn't align the wheels after getting the tires. I did all these things and my truck is fine bud

    • @ballader1
      @ballader1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1)He lives in Texas.
      2)He means giant as too much for the truck, it messed up everything.
      3)The tires are not mud-terrain but are more aggressive than road tires.

      1) doesn't get out much, does he?
      2) incorrectly installed or designed =/= too much.
      TBH, that truck is so beat up I'd be shocked if it didn't haven't a bunch of worn suspension components.
      3) Those are Bridgestones, that is a tread pattern extremely similar to the Bridgestone touring tires somebody put on a Pontiac Firebird I owned. Those tires aren't even remotely "aggressive". They are pretty much an all season tire at the most. He shoulda walked the 6 feet to the other side of the truck and showed the mud terrain tire there if he wanted to say that.

    • @ballader1
      @ballader1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      l337pwnage
      They are probably dueler 694, an All terrain kind of tire, they are not that aggresive but every new 4wd comes with road tires, in comparison to them yeah they are much more aggressive. There is no lift that won't mess up an Independent Front Suspension unless it's not lifting it much but still... The only right way to put such lift is to install a Solid front Axle and then lift it, but still it might require a differential lowering kit if it's too much. You also got to worry about the driveshaft. Lifting a vehicle is not as simple as it may sound. Sure you can do it but it will cost you in reliability. Monster trucks made from f150s and any other similar truck look cool, are great off-roading but they break often aswell. Just an example.... Of course if you need one of these lifted trucks nobody said not to get one, he was probably criticizing the people who lift them for the looks! That's crazy it messes up everything and gives you something that you don't really need. Anyways... oh by the way, what truck do you drive? Have fun and keep wheeling :)

    • @ballader1
      @ballader1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      l337pwnage
      Looking at it again and judging by the siping the tires could also be Dueler 695 or dunlop grandtreks but what I'm really curious about is why the owner had 4 different tires in the truck. That's one of the reason it surely gets bad MPG... let alone the aggressive tires hehe

    Rode like silk, and could go off the road at 30+ mph into dirt. And big tires wear like iron if you inflate to proper psi, and rotate/balance them.
    Your customers didn’t properly install their shit.

    This is a totally poor example to use. It's a cheap lift and doesn't sort out driveline geometry or steering geometry. A good, well designed lift kit will drive as well as, if not slightly better than factory with the right parts and paying attention to what is affected by a lift and what needs adjusting you won't even notice a difference in parts wearing out as everything will be almost as factory spec

    Ok .....
    1. A true proper lift has angle shims for the rear end to reduce the driveline angle.
    2. Depending on the steering mechanism a lift kit comes with different pitman arms
    3. A IFS lift should have a drop kit to keep CV axles at stock angle.
    4. You really dont know much about lifted trucks.
    I think your only valid complaint is working under the hood.
    With the new designs of lift kits available the ride the look the performance and resale are all greatly improved. Aftermarket springs and shocks will ALWAYS be better than OEM bs.

    I think it hilarious that your best comeback is ride a motorcycle REAL men ride two wheels or none at all! A lot of these guys ride there dirtbikes that they take out of there jacked up truck! I am with the majority of people commenting on this that if a lift is done right nothing will happen but regular wear and tear! Everything eventually falls apart you as a mechanic should know that nothings made perfect! You're gonna have to work on anything you own whether or not its stock....has a leveling kit..or is lifted 6 inchs in the air. And most of these guys that are "tearing up the wilderness" are actually the guys keeping the wilderness clean and picking up trash from city slickers that don't give a rip and drive up the mountain and drop a truck load of trash over the bank. These 4x4 enthusiast and dirtbike riders want to keep the wilderness open to go out and have fun....they don't destroy anything if anything there saving the wilderness from being ruled by government! on another topic I'm sure that wayyy more people are killed on bikes then jacked up trucks i don't know if that's why you think its "cooler" or not! Everybody has an opinion but to me it sounds like you are trying to put people down just for what they drive which is crazy!

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find it silly for guys to put a bike on a truck, drive it somewhere, then ride the bike. Either ride the bike everywhere or don't use it. Like those dudes who go to Sturgis putting their harleys in a trailer, then riding the last five miles on their bikes into town. Not real bikers if you ask me.

    • @davidhall3478
      @davidhall3478 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha what's the difference between where we ride you ride on the street and just see what you can on the pavement where we can all see in our "jacked up trucks". Where as on a dirt bike you can go places and see things that no one else can! You're just concealed by the living of the city life instead of being able to go in the mountains where you're not bothered by anyone and relax without being bothered! And as for driving our bikes places not everyone has to some of us are blessed and can ride from our garages some are not so lucky and want to enjoy going into the wilderness and not be stuck to only the pavement that they drive on every day to there job! And they also make enduros that are capable of of riding both on and off road!

    Rev up your Little Man Syndrome!
    Another reason not to buy a lifted truck is that it tells you a lot about the previous owner and how they probably treated the thing. The type of guys who lift trucks are a lot more likely to have drove it like their hair was on fire. Not to mention, if they actually made use of all that ground clearance, that means they were driving it through some very harsh environmental conditions. If you're into rock climbing or mud running etc, that's fine, but I'm not buying your beat on toy after you're done playing with it.

    You really talk to the people that disagree with you like shit. Most people you're arguing with on here are just simply saying you should let people do what they want without calling them juvenile. Yeah, there are lots of people that lift trucks just to look cool, but you seem to be ignoring that lots of people actually go off roading, and even more important than that, there are lots of organizations, emergency response teams, and businesses that literally have to have lifted vehicles. Stop pretending like everyone that lifts their vehicle is damaging it. Lift kits can properly be installed, and the vehicle they are installed on can be adequately adjusted so that the vehicle suffers from no long term strain. It is possible, and many people need to have it done to their vehicle for their job, no matter how much you hate it or think it is "juvenile". You're being extremely close minded right now.

    Lifts have changed a great deal over the past few years....any decent kit will keep all the angles the same as the factory set them. But then again, every major truck manufacturer is now offering full size trucks lifted up to 6" out the door AND covering them with the same factory warranty that would be offered in the stock form....So, Not dumb to lift a truck when done right. Sure, a cheap lift installed by a DIYer could result in accelerated wear of drivetrain components...sure if the shocks & springs are not upgraded with the lift, the ride quality will be poor...sure the trans, Differentials, Transfer Case, ect. Can be damaged if NOT re geared to accommodate larger tires....And yes, you will also see decreased gas mileage if the ECM is not tuned.....BUT, These are things that are involved in doing a PROPER Lift. So once again, when done the right way....The truck will last just as long lifted as it would last in the stock form. This video was really unnecessary.

    Not sure why this video has so many dislikes but a lot of what he's saying is true. There is a "proper" way to lift the suspension that involves extensive driveline/steering modifications but most (if not all) "lift kits" do not address this. Lift kits only focus on the height aspect which is only half the puzzle, if you care about reliability and want to do the lift properly, you'll need to pony up the cash for the proper driveline/steering modifications. Often times, these ancillary modifications will end up costing more than the actual lift kit which is why most people overlook this.

      The video has dislikes because it’s a bunch of bullshit. The video should be titled why you shouldn’t buy a cheap lift kit. Not why are lifted trucks dumb. This is just an old creepy man spewing his opinions. If you have ever done a lift you would know a good kit does come with extensions and pivots for your steering and drive shaft. Most guys lifting their trucks are also changing drive shafts and axles and even upgrading the steering to push bigger tires around. You know what I think is dumb. Driving a tiny little car that’s slower than my big truck, I think it’s dumb to drive a little car that you wouldn’t have a chance of walking out of if you were to hit or get hit by my truck, I think it’s dumb when people put a wing on a front wheel drive car. I think it’s dumb when people put 2000 dollar rims on a car with a broken window and four different colored body panels.

      Cody Deadmond His advice appears to be mainly for the average driver in urban/semi-urban environments and so of course if you live somewhere where it is actually needed, then use it. I think the annoyance is that a sizable portion of lifted trucks rarely, if ever, see dirt roads.

    • @ImStormX1
      @ImStormX1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The people I know who lift there trucks that never see any dirt are the people that take them to car shows. And those trucks aare relatively nice. Looking at upwards of $20,000 in upgrades, and have all the upgrades in parts that he references that face more wear with your typical lift kit. Some kits even come with them. It one of the aspects such as, do it right or don't do it all. Don't do right and you break down, that's your own business, your own money, your own truck. Which I don't even know why he is complaining because it brings mechanics such as himself more business. I can see his stand point and it is a little biased. But not all of his viewers live in a suburban/rural area, and he never referenced that it's only specifically ignorant to those who live urban environments. Lastly, I know people who live in towns, but have friends that live on back roads or way out in the country, or still love to go mudding. Lifts have many different purposes. Style, performance, etc. I feel, if you own it, and it's your money, it's no one else place to tell you it's stupid.

      Body lifts do not change suspension geometry but they can hurt in other ways. Typically around 1" of body lift is ok, but 2" or 3" body lifts are not only ugly but can hurt the vehicle.

      My trucks got IFS. Diff was dropped so front drive line is at stock angle. Rears just lifted with blocks. So rear diff angle is the same. Nearly Everything else is unaffected. The only thing at a crap angle is the rear prop. But UJs are cheap and easy to change. I just make sure they packed full of grease often. Not all lift kits are half assed.

    It isn't a real lift kit, they don't just put a spacer and those are not aggressive.

    • @SM120THBORE
      @SM120THBORE 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, having a lift kit means you have smoother suspension which means you feel less bumps because instead of taking impacts like you see on every vehicle, like when the wheel doesn't get closer to the inner fender, your lift kit suspension absorbs it.

    • @SM120THBORE
      @SM120THBORE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      OverRotated Owl Yes I do, cars have stiff suspension, stock suspension on trucks are softer and do you know why? If not I shouldn't have to explain but softer suspension = smoother ride, stiffer suspension = rougher ride. So imagine the better suspension that guys upgrade on their truck which is even softer.

    • @Overtatedowl
      @Overtatedowl 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +F-350 6.7 PowerStroke no. Cars don't have "stiffer" and trucks don't have "softer". Every car and truck is different. My truck had a stiff suspension from the factory, since I've put on a cheap rough country lift, which wasn't cheap at all it was $1,200 and I put on 35" MT tires, truck is stiff as fuck. Because I don't want to spend 1,500 for King shock coil overs or a completely different lift that's 3,500. Cars are all different. No car really drives the same. They could be stiff. But there's plenty that are soft. Having a lift kit by no means at all is to have a smoother ride. It's all for height and ground clearance.

    • @SM120THBORE
      @SM120THBORE 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      OverRotated Owl I never said that applying a lift kit means a smoother ride (even though your suspension travel is increased) and if it's what you read well that is not what I meant. Anyway in general cars have stiffer suspension and trucks softer but yes not every one are the same.

      Same as the old Blazer ZR2s. Engineers installed different front axles, drive line, rear end, rear axle, front differential, etc. Changing the geometry of a engineered suspension and drive train, just invites trouble, expensive repairs, and higher insurance premiums.

    • @Satchmoeddie
      @Satchmoeddie 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh, and just how much engineering does go into four spacer blocks you bolt in between the axles and your springs? NONE! The same stores and manufacturers that sell those lift kits will happily sell you new Borg Warner joints, axle shafts, drive lines, differentials, transfer cases, brake rotors, springs, transmissions, etc. etc. etc. I worked on a desert jeep tours tourist businesses, fleet of jeeps. They had a modest lift on SOME of their jeeps, but the suspension, and drive train failures on those lifted vehicles were far more frequent, and they only lifted the newer Jeeps, thinking the older ones were not worth the effort, yet the older supposedly more worn out vehicles incurred far fewer problems, than the lifted Jeeps. When I say older, I mean 2 or 3 years older.

    • @JoeIsCrazyWillman
      @JoeIsCrazyWillman 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HereComesVinny Those are designed that way from the factory, so they're at the right angles, tho will still wear marginally faster due to higher center of gravity and higher weight acting in conjunction with the higher center will ALWAYS create more stress, no matter what. It just is engineered to work that way stock, so it won't wear AS FAST as say a regular F150 done as a raptor look alike.

  • @user-id8ng9eq9h
    @user-id8ng9eq9h 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I enjoy and learn a lot from your content - thanks Scotty.But about lifted trucks, I’ve had them for 35 years and almost couldn’t picture driving anything else. There are lots of crappy lifts out there - but a well engineered modest (2-4”) lift that accounts for all the driveline and steering angle changes has minimal impact and can increase the performance, utility and most certainly looks of a 4x4 truck. Needless to say, doing it “right” even for a small lift is not cheap. That said, any half baked lift no matter how small or big will definitely cause wear problems, funny enough - I think one of the biggest offenders that seems so harmless but can cause the most damage is leveling kits on IFS trucks. They just raise all the driveline angles without any correction.

  • @mondobananas1832
    @mondobananas1832 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It basically ruins the idea of a truck. They were originally made for work, not play. On a regular truck, the weight is lower to the ground and that’s where most of the power is at, so it’ll have a bigger towing capacity. But if you lift it, the weight is in the sky, and power without traction is nothing. There’s less traction if you lift it. I’m also partly grateful for the idea of playing with a truck, since it’s really fun to go off-roading through the mountains.

  • @EngineeringGoneWrong
    @EngineeringGoneWrong 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I love your videos Scotty but this is a very uninformed video.
    Lifting a truck like this one is absolutely bad,,,I totally agree on that.
    But, like anything else in the car world there is a right way to do it too. If he had used a more expensive (and well designed) lift kit that added things like conversion pitment arms, diff drop and transfer case drop (or different driveshafts) and the proper spring rates there is no reason that a truck can't retain most of its comfort and reliability. It's all a matter of how much money you put into it to lift it correctly.
    Yes the truck may be a bit more tipsy but wider tires and offset rims help gain a lot of that stability back.
    Most importantly though there are people that don't live in the middle of suburbia that need a truck that can get through the woods, desert, mud, deep snow, and not get stuck all the time. They don't make stock vehicles that fit these needs all of the time so one must customize it to fit there needs.
    So next time, before discounting all lift kits as stupid and destroying a vehicle, consider the fact that there is a wrong and right way to do things and what you are seeing is the wrong way, not the only way.

    • @scottykilmer
      @scottykilmer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      SO many people do it wrong, I had to show this one done wrong. and really, trucks are freaking high enough anyway, they are designed by engineers to run correctly, messing with that, makes em poorer vehicles if you're just driving on normal roads all the time.

    • @EngineeringGoneWrong
      @EngineeringGoneWrong 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get what you're saying, I do and I agree I guess it just would have been nice to see some mention in the video that it can be done correctly... I mean heck that guy had a chicken wire grill of course it was lifted poorly lol.
      What you should do is make a video about extreme lowering kind where you have to notch the frame for the a arms to fit... That's where you should be directing your hate lol.

    • @justrightnow8350
      @justrightnow8350 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scotty Kilmer im sorry but that just sounds ignorant. if they're designed for rough terrain and last longer on rough terrain I mean common sense would say that nice clean terrain would prolong the life of that part I mean I agree that they can be half assed but other than the poor workmanship the life of it depends on the way its made and the maintenance.

      if this truck had a straight axle it probably would have been easier to install a lift kit on it. my dodge is a straight axle so all i have to worry about is ball joints and control arms wearing out.
