For lifted trucks, Scotty recommends a tire plug kit. I suggest getting a security plate welded over your cat converter, because a HIGH vehicle is an EASY vehicle.
@@ajabellon most trucks can go much bigger than stock tires. At the very most 2in bigger tires. And that shouldnt have much of a effect on your suspension if any.

A good lift kit addresses many of the issues of drive train alignment. 2 drive shaft Toyotas have center carrier spaces to lessen angles. There are also shims for the rear axles to rotate it upwards to lessen angles. The front differential can be lowered with a spacer kit also.
Lowering the front dif defeats the purpose of lifting the truck. There are way better ways to address this, Like proper CV's. Same with the rear drive shaft. Scott just picked a lifted truck with a crappy lift kit and a poor execution on the rest of the lift.
I just lifted my Nissan Xterra not too long ago.. did all the work myself and really love how truck feels and drives and still plan to do more work on it and make videos about it !
My 1986 K-10 chevy was lifted with a 10 inch Lift in 1987 and has been a Daily driver Since.......never had any issues . If the vehicle is lifted CORRECTLY then you wont have problems.

My 1984 Toyota pickup came from the factory with a lift. It can't compare to most trucks with aftermarket lift kits, but it's plenty high enough for me. Besides, I want to keep it stock.
I'm not a mud rider but have owned a few drag race and round track cars. A rule I always follow-Nothing goes on my vehicle that slows it down. But I'll admire the creativity of the mud runners from afar.
I was walking home when I saw a utility truck coming towards the intersection on a slight downhill slope. It caught my attention because it was making this "Ding-ding" sound. When it got close enough, I could see the drive shaft had come loose from the differential and the loose end was bouncing on the road. Truck pulled up to the stop sign. Driver put the truck in first gear and hit the gas. From under the truck: BAMITY-BAM-BAM! The free end of the drive shaft whipped around and beat the bottom of the truck about 50 times. Well, did all that noise catch his attention? No. Driver took his foot off the gas, re-put it in first gear again - and gave it the gas again. BAMITY-BAM-BAM! some more! Driver slowly slides out of the cab and looks under the truck. Well, whaddya know. yuk-yuk.
Visit your local wrecking yard. Many large pickups with the cabs smashed down...rollovers. NTSB knows tall and lifted vehicles carry an increased probability of rollover in an accident avoidance maneuver. Lobby efforts from Speciality Manufacturers pay off at the expense of driver safety. Bumper heights are way too tall also for safety around passenger cars. The taller the truck, the lower the IQ generally.

I had a 76 F-150 4X4. The U joints cracked at the rear end, out in the middle of west Texas on a Sunday afternoon. Pulled the drive shaft off, put it in the back of the bed. Drove it back to Mississippi with the front wheel drive. Never would have believed, I got better gas mileage that way. Did put the driveshaft back on when I sold it.
My biggest complaint about lifted trucks = The morons don't have the headlights properly adjusted. I get blinded by them every night. It's worse when they have the 'driving lights' on too in town when there are plenty of street lights on to illuminate the road. SMH. JMO.
Each to their own I say. I just wish after these guys spend all the time and money they would spend a few minutes RE AIMING THEIR HEADLIGHTS! Maybe an automotive expert could do a headlight aiming video.
i drive a 05 F250 4x4....... Stock ride height. but still........ driving to work every morning i see all these Ricer shitboxes and guys with 5 light bars on the front of their Tundra or Tacoma with "custom extra bright bulbs" halogens LEDs etc etc........ bright as hell blinding me... not even adjusted in the slightest and my truck sits above these things....... and im scratching my head trying to figure out when they'll figure out you dont need super bright bulbs in your headlights to see at night hence why automakers invented Hi-Beams so you dont blind oncoming traffic.......... i just replaced and properly adjusted both my headlights on my f250........ they're brand new....... and these guys fancy mis aimed bulbs are brighter than my Lo-Beams....... they'd probably see farther with regular bulbs if they were aimed properly.

A lot of people actually need more ground clearance for legitimate reasons. I've had way more damage from bottoming out than I have from the angles changing because of a 2" lift.
Scotty is right, I finally got rid of mines sure it was coo riding around people amazed by it. Kid's love em but at the end of the day too many problems. Fuel, curb rash going through the Drive-through fixing the front end suspension. Shop's trying to overcharge you for dumb stuff. Buying new tires way more sooner than normal. It's a inconvenience when you look at it if you do catch a flat tire oh man. I just got tired of spending money on it and it didn't benefit me whatsoever. Not to mention finding a parking spot. It was fun while it lasted but it quickly got old. Some guys don't mind it but yeah I'm not doing that again. Rather put my money away and use it to make a decent return.
@@signkutter9218 I've had GM IFS,ford IFS, and multiple solid axles. You won't get any argument from me! The IFS systems are just more expensive to do right. Fords old IFS (the TTB) was especially difficult to maintain alignment, those split dana 44's were just a pain.
I had a 86 4x4 stock Bronco I cut the fenders off clean and stuck 40" super swampers with mounted smoke stacks that would blow flames and won lots of trophies. No need for additional lifting.
Scotty, no offense to the truck you’re looking at, but take a look at a truck with a quality suspension such as a BDS suspension, or ICON; these brands purposely engineer their kits to retain stock angles on all steering/driving components. Would like to see your opinion
We live in the country. Told my wife she had to get rid of her 2016 Dart She came home with a 2018 Ram 1/2 ton Ram laramie with the AEV Option. Which ia a Ram option. Lifted 4 inches Toyo 33 inch tires Steel bumper Warn winch Forgot to say it has the V-6 diesel engine. Electric steps. Gets 21 mpg on the fwy 15 in town Now has 40,000 miles on the truck. Will need new tires in the next 5,000 miles. Already bought the tires,just running out the old tires. Just regular oil changes and maintenance. She loves the truck. Me I have my 2019 Ram with the 1000lbs of torque. I get 20mpg on the fwy and not towing.Towing. Forgot to mention she got a 120,000 mile warranty on her hole truck including the lift kit.
Lift kits require a combination of quality kit and quality installation. There are kits that improve the ride and performance without sacrificing reliability. Coil suspension have much greater success than IFS. There's a reason some kits are $3000-$5000 instead of $1200
@@AV84USA You can change pinion angles and put 2 piece driveshafts with spaces if required to help the geometry. For the front end of IFS, you need a lot more fabricating and mounting but you can change the geometry. The fact is most people don't, most people buy cheap lift kits, hell where I'm from we used to use hockey pucks to lift up trucks.
One of my trucks has a 4” lift . A proper lift, property installed, most of these issues aren’t relative. Yes they lose fuel mileage, they’d to be expected. I have 340k miles on that truck. I’ll let you know when I have an issue due to a lift. And hold your hats, it’s a Chevy.
Been driving lifted trucks and Jeeps for over 20 years. No problems related to lift when done right. In fact, one of our company GMC Canyons has 391k miles with a 3” lift and still going strong. My company Silverado has a 3.5” lift since almost new, no issues at 111,000.
i'm actually ok with all of this, sometimes i care about my vehicle being fun and something i enjoy looking at more than i do about everything being in spec , i'll deal with slightly worse gas mileage and parts wear (within reason) just so my vehicle is something i enjoy being in.

I would rather it be useful off road, lifted on stock diameter actually hurts off-road performance. You want it as low as you can go on the biggest tires you can fit. The tires give you clearance, a lift kit won't get your axle clearance any better
I have a 12" lift and 40" tires. I love it! If you take care of it, get it serviced on time, and have the money for it, they're awesome. You gotta be a fan of lifted trucks to appreciate them, amd understand the expenses and limitations, and that being said I wouldn't change a thing! 2015 Silverado 1500, 117k miles.
All depends on IFS or if it’s independent suspension. Live axle is only affected on tail shaft angles, which is only a problem if you don’t lower the gearbox. Departure and arrival angles are greatly improved with small lift kits and bigger tyres. It also matters what you plan to do with the vehicle.
That's why I love my $35ooo 40 year old squarebody .straight axles and everything angled correctly ,different steering arm to prevent frame cracking due to steering box binding .

Scotty, when you turn the switch of ignition, you do it fast. An Ingenier of Chrysler in Mexico, told me to go slow in order let the pressure of the fuel line to stabilize. In my turbo experience it will last for ever, same thing when you get to a final stop, take some time for the sistem to get stable. The gas pump will last much longer. Cheap ways to make things last longer.
Funny you should post this today, Where i live it snowed today, A lady was stopped at the stop light with a almost new Toyota Corolla, Guy was behind her in a lifted F-250 With big wide tires which are the worst thing in the world for stopping on snow and Ice, he hit the back of the toyota and because it sat so high it missed the bumper completely on the toyota and wiped out the deck lid, both rear tailights and both quarter panels, almost made it to the back window, didn't hurt the truck, it had a big homemade square tube bumper / winch and grill guard, Bet his insurance company is not going to be too happy, from a safety standpoint, Even though they look cool, trucks lifted as high as his was should be for off road use only.
I live in canada...i use to move cars from dealers to auction sites or other used car dealership...i had a pickup with lifts and it was frickin windy that day and i swore the truck was gonna flip...
Big disadvantage is lifted trucks for a person under 6' tall is good luck reaching anything under the hood with out a step stool or having to sit under the hood to change anything. My old girl is a 1984 Chevy 4x4 and she sits a little higher than most but a great and tough as hell pickup. 1993 Chevy 350 TBI with 700R4 and I love it!
Lifted trucks are useless for towing and they're useless for hauling anything in the bed. Example try loading a refrigerator in the back the pickup with the 8-in lift kit versing one at stock height and then tell me which one's easier. I guess lifted trucks has their place mainly if you want to go play in the mud or your compensating for something but if I had my choice between a jacked up pick up and my F-150 that's a stock height I'll take the pickup at stock height every time
GET THAT SPARE TIRE OFF OF THERE ASAP!! I'm in Nova Scotia, and up here that thing will hold salt, mud, dirt, and water and will rot the crossmembers and box in a hurry. I took mine off this past summer and after 5 years the rust was unreal, even with undercoating every year!

Here in good old Northwest Washington we got guys with lifted everything. There was a guy grinding on massive mud tires on the freeway and it sounded like a plane taking off. I've been seeing alot of those fancy new Tacoma and 4Runners built for Overland that are also daily drivers. Not a drop of mud anywhere spotless. There was a guy with a rally build Turndra used as a daily driver as well
People don’t get fancy off road trucks to be practical or get fuel mileage. They do it because they can do it and want to do it. They also don’t care if you think it’s silly
Yeah I had a 2006 Chevy 1500 with a Rancho 6 inch lift and my ball joints kept going out however did not experience any other wear issues and I sold it after putting about 100,000 miles on it and the engine was still doing great but I did have to get tranny rebuilt at 60,000 but I believe that was because the previous owner abused the truck pulling and hauling very heavy loads and he moved up to a 3/4 ton! My Chevy had a very smooth ride with the 35 inch Nitto Terra Grapplers Rancho suspension it rode like a Caddy!
A slight lift isn't bad, but you get over 3-4 inch and it becomes pointless. Even if you have 11in of lift, your clearance is still limited by the front and rear axles.

If you're going to lift it, do the bumpers like this. You should still maintain legal clearance because that's what other vehicles are engineered for. Just make it easy to unbolt when you go rock climbing if needed.
I work with a guy who used to be a cop, and he said the vast majority of lifted vehicles are actually illegal because they don't adjust the bumper heights after they lift the body
Biggest mistake when people lift the front their truck is keeping the stock upper control arms. That is what causes the geometry to get all out of alignment. I put 2.5 inch leveling kit on my 2018 Silverado and spent the extra $200 for the correct upper control arms. Everything is nice and happy. No alignment problems, no wear issues and CV shafts are level and happy.
You’re right as usual Scotty. The final issue is what happens to the poor guy in a sedan when he gets rear-ended by one of these death trap trucks? He’s screwed.
Not really, it would be worse if the sedan rear-ended the truck because of the height of the bumper of some trucks. The truck in this video isn't very high and wouldn't be much damage. Plus the chev in this video was done wrong to begin with. Lifted Trucks are only somewhat death traps when done poorly/cheaply or way overkill for highway use (Like a 20" lift on 53's)
Anyone else notice that rig is 2wd? When lifting or lowering a vehicle you change all steering and drivetrain angles. You change one you need to change/correct all of them if you want things on your vehicle to last. After all the corrections I did to do to get everything into stock spec on my lifted 84' Toyota pickup 4x4 my rig handles great on or off road. Just hoping the 4cyl lasts to it's first birthday of 500,000 miles. A V6 or V8 conversion is in the fore seeable future, so at least till then.

With the wider tires come deep dish rims. These move the weight off center of the wheel bearings. Thru leverage it puts more stress and wear on the bearing. Definitely shorting life span of the wheel bearings. Same with leverage on the steering components. I say the engineers spent a long time making everything work a long time as soon as you start changing you can no longer blame them. 75 ford high boys came lifted from the factory.
When a vehicle is turning there is side load on the wheel bearing…hopefully the engineers didn’t just design the wheel bearings for centred loads. Same goes for the forces on the steering components. Other than in extreme cases these added loads don’t exceed what the components are designed for. Yes it’s worse, but it’s negligible with minor lifts and slightly bigger wheels.
The lowrider guys know all about that. Those tiny wheels sticking out is brutal on bearings. I worked with a guy who re packed them every 15k miles lol
Seems most good and experienced mechanic have the same or almost the same character. Used to live close to one, about the same age as you sir. Doesn't take any crap on unproven theories on car fix and mods. Even to the extend of giving you a good lecture for using a wrong name for spare parts. You know, there's the actual name and commonly used name of calling a spare parts. He is a good honest and good mechanic, nice to talk to about cars and maintenance. Ive never had a lifted truck that DIDNT wear the tires terribly. Its unavoidable. Part of the deal. Doesnt matter how often you rotate em or if you install adjustable cam bolts or run adjustable UCAs. They always wear on the inside drastically. Chevys were always the worst
It's just not the case if it's done correctly, I don't know about new vehicles but on my squarebodies it's just cut and reweld the spring mounts on the axles to correct pinion angle, drop the transmission crossmember to adjust your driveshaft angle, taller pitman or crossover steering if you're going over 4", and extended swaybar brackets over 4". Top it off with all new bearings and poly bushings and you've got yourself a 4-8" lift in a 40 year old truck that drives like a brand new one
Dont forget blinding oncoming traffic with your lights, and bumper height disparities can make some dangerous damage to mere sedans. What do you think of the monster wide tires the extend past the fenders 10-12 inches?
I think a LOT of the people who are having these lift kits put on their vehicles are mainly going for a "cool looking" Mall crawler and will NEVER see terrain that will take advantage of the increased ground clearance or traction gotten with the tires and lift kits. Myself, I am happy with my first generation ZJ Grand Cherokee with just a couple inches of lift and slightly taller tires than stock. And if ya find one with the factory tow package then you also get the added bonus of a limited slip rear end for more wheels helping it to keep on moving in whatever direction you are trying to go!
The tires are always out of balance/alignment. Don't forget the never used tow hitch. Either the triple ball thats still brand new shiny, or the 4ft high adjustable one that's also brand new shiny
Your correct as usual Scotty, but having lived in Texas, you know a fella has to out do the next fella. That's why my 21 Silverado 2500 is leveled on 37's with 20 x 10's. But I'm not completely stupid as I get a truck allowance and paid millage from my employer.
My friend rescued me from work after being there for 24 hours when tropical storm Allison hit Houston in 2001. He had a jeep that was lifted way up. We went through some very high water. The engine got really hot though from the water pulling on the tires.
Hey, Scotty as an ex tech, i sell parts now, i have had cutomers keep bringing back axle shaft for warranty. Many of these warranties were on lifted trucks, they just couldnt understand why they kept destroying axle shafts.

Lifted trucks are status symbols for smaller nether regions. Good thing I do not own a lifted truck......I'd be in turtle mode all the time. It's a tough world, better not lift it.
If a lift kit is designed with proper suspension geometry factored in, then alot of times the lift kit is better than stock suspension. However, there are alot of kits that don't even know the meaning of suspension geometry. My 6" BDS suspension on my chevy is alot better than stock. Now my truck dosen't ride like a brick!
I did a “level kit” on my 16 JK. Raised the front 2”& the rear 1”. I changed shocks to Billstein 5100s & added bump stops to prevent over travel along with a steering stabilizer. I went with 33” ATs avoiding 35” MTs; overall tried to cover my bases. Hopefully I didn’t mess up my Jeep. It doesn’t ride as good on the road but kicks butt of road & looks great! How bad did I screw up?
What you did was pretty minimal and shouldn't have any appreciable effect on suspension geometry. If you haven't taken it in for a full alignment since doing the work, do so. My '15 jku didn't start needing serious geometry compensation until I got to 4" lift.
I've put a 3.5 inch lift on my jeep Cherokee 17 years ago and it's still going strong. I of course have had to do a lot of basic maintenance on it through out the years but have never had any problems with any major failures to my drive trane and this jeep has seen many of jeep trails.
A quality lift kit is a must. It drops the front dif so the shaft angles are correct. Also, a truck with a live axle is a different animal. I changed springs, shocks, link arms, and sway bar brackets and it has a smoother ride then before with more travel. I have been playing with lifted trucks for over 40 years. I also am good friends with someone that is in the business... And he is on the inside, design, manufacturing, etc., not retail. And the Yota... In the high teens MPG? LMAO!!! A friend of mine has one and 13-14 is on a good day, down hill with a tail wind. My Cummins powered Dodge with a 4' lift and big tires gets 17-18! And that is a 3/4 ton! I have two of them, one auto and the other 6 speed. One is a hotrod with a bigger turbo, exhaust, intake, program, etc.
If you’re going to lift your truck, use a quality kit that includes all the components to keep shaft geometry correct, and has the replacement heavier components where needed. I had the dealership install a 7” lift on my truck. 60,000+ miles so far and I’ve never had a single problem. Tires are wearing evenly, all driveline and suspension components are still going strong. It really comes down to choosing the right lift kit.
To be honest the drive line looked pretty well on that lifted truck , 2 piece driveshaft. Some kits come with front diff lowering mounts But still lift kits are for deep pocket boys with expensive toys

Even as a kid it became my lifelong Passion to modify the hell out of everything. I have had dozens of lifted 4 wheel drive pick UPS and S UV's in my lifetime. Some Set UPS worked better than others. Oh and stay away from Jeep's.. They are an endless money pit. Once you start thinking with a Jeep, yeah it becomes a snowball chain reaction action and you will never be finished with it. Wise man once told me you can either have a Jeep or money in the bank but never both. I tend to keep things on the mild side now and just pay attention to the small details like pinion angles and gear ratio.
I hold a B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering, and worked in chassis dynamics for not one, but two different OEM companies over a 35-year career. MOST of what Scotty says here is insignificant for lifts 2.5-inches or less. In fact, LOWERING a vehicle below its 'lowest OEM ride height' is worse on most components than raising it. Keep in mind, that 'bare-minimum 6-cylinder GMC Sierra ride-height is up to 4-inches lower than the 'topped-out' OEM 4x4 Sierra sporting the 6.2-liter Vortec. The shaft alignment angle IS important, but for U-joints, nominal is anything below 10-degrees off-center, and CV joints are 'Constant Velocity' joints for a reason...properly maintained, angles below 20-degrees are also 'insignificant'. A well-designed 4-inch lift kit compensates angles to return them to 'near OEM specs', so this is where 'cutting corners' shortens life. Now, you want to know what DOES destroy a suspension or chassis? Wide tires, differing wheel offsets, oversized (height) tires, 'mud lug' tires (aka 'Gumbo Monster Mudders', etc.), poor or no 'after-lift' alignment, lack of frequent alignments, poor tire balancing, bent rims (frequent, with off-road use), modified springs (A BIG FACTOR...which is a MAJOR contributor when discussing 'lowered vehicles') and modified engines and drivetrains (200-hp to 600-hp, you're going to break things...and you're going to throw ALL of your alignments off when you go from a stock 4L60 transmission to a 6L80 with a divorced transfer or overdrive). Even things such as 'harder dampening shocks and struts' can greatly contribute to severe life-shortening of suspension and drivetrain components. With 'lowering a vehicle', if you merely 'chop the springs', you have effectively changed the spring-rate...and for the stiffer 'worse', too...keep in mind, a coil spring is a 'spiral spring bar' that 'springs' by 'twisting'...so if you cut off a coil, you've cut off anywhere from 1-2 feet of spring...well, if it was 8-feet of bar originally, holding 1,000-pounds of sprung mass each, that's 10.41-lbs/inch of 'spring resistance'...but if it's still holding that same 1,000-lbs after chopping a coil off (that was 18-inches long uncoiled), it is now providing 12.82-lbs/inch of resistance...you've 'harshened your ride'...sometimes enough to shear axles, spindles, etc...not to mention detrimentally affecting handling, damping, etc. Again, you've got to 'buy new springs', not modify what you have...(in this case, a smaller wire diameter to return your spring rate to 10.4-lbs/inch, as it was before). The worst damage I've seen has come from wider tires/wheels, which put undue lever forces on the front spindle/bearing. It is premature failure that takes the form of total loss of control...and sadly, there is NO AFTERMARKET DESIGN that compensates for this! It doesn't take a lift-kit to put wide tires/wheels on. As for the most 'money-robbing, blood-sucking' car...I had to laugh when Scotty's opening shot shows him in an old Vette...as I had one. A 1970 454-4-speed...and one sentence should tell you how agonizing it was to the pocketbook...'It has 5-U-Joints in the rear-end, alone!!!'

A good lift kit addresses many of the issues of drive train alignment. 2 drive shaft Toyotas have center carrier spaces to lessen angles. There are also shims for the rear axles to rotate it upwards to lessen angles. The front differential can be lowered with a spacer kit also.
Lowering the front dif defeats the purpose of lifting the truck. There are way better ways to address this, Like proper CV's. Same with the rear drive shaft.
Scott just picked a lifted truck with a crappy lift kit and a poor execution on the rest of the lift.

My 1986 K-10 chevy was lifted with a 10 inch Lift in 1987 and has been a Daily driver Since.......never had any issues . If the vehicle is lifted CORRECTLY then you wont have problems.
That's back when GM knew how to build a four-wheel drive front suspension.

My 1984 Toyota pickup came from the factory with a lift. It can't compare to most trucks with aftermarket lift kits, but it's plenty high enough for me. Besides, I want to keep it stock.
I prefer it be lifted from the factory if it can. Less issues as well

I'm not a mud rider but have owned a few drag race and round track cars. A rule I always follow-Nothing goes on my vehicle that slows it down.
But I'll admire the creativity of the mud runners from afar.
I was walking home when I saw a utility truck coming towards the intersection on a slight downhill slope. It caught my attention because it was making this "Ding-ding" sound. When it got close enough, I could see the drive shaft had come loose from the differential and the loose end was bouncing on the road. Truck pulled up to the stop sign. Driver put the truck in first gear and hit the gas. From under the truck: BAMITY-BAM-BAM! The free end of the drive shaft whipped around and beat the bottom of the truck about 50 times. Well, did all that noise catch his attention? No. Driver took his foot off the gas, re-put it in first gear again - and gave it the gas again. BAMITY-BAM-BAM! some more! Driver slowly slides out of the cab and looks under the truck. Well, whaddya know. yuk-yuk.

smashed down...rollovers. NTSB knows tall and lifted vehicles carry an increased probability of rollover in an accident avoidance maneuver. Lobby efforts from Speciality Manufacturers pay off at the expense of driver safety. Bumper heights are way too tall also for safety around passenger cars. The taller the truck, the lower the IQ generally.

I had a 76 F-150 4X4. The U joints cracked at the rear end, out in the middle of west Texas on a Sunday afternoon. Pulled the drive shaft off, put it in the back of the bed. Drove it back to Mississippi with the front wheel drive. Never would have believed, I got better gas mileage that way. Did put the driveshaft back on when I sold it.
My biggest complaint about lifted trucks = The morons don't have the headlights properly adjusted. I get blinded by them every night. It's worse when they have the 'driving lights' on too in town when there are plenty of street lights on to illuminate the road. SMH. JMO.
Each to their own I say. I just wish after these guys spend all the time and money they would spend a few minutes RE AIMING THEIR HEADLIGHTS! Maybe an automotive expert could do a headlight aiming video.

Stock ride height. but still........ driving to work every morning i see all these Ricer shitboxes and guys with 5 light bars on the front of their Tundra or Tacoma with "custom extra bright bulbs" halogens LEDs etc etc........ bright as hell blinding me... not even adjusted in the slightest and my truck sits above these things....... and im scratching my head trying to figure out when they'll figure out you dont need super bright bulbs in your headlights to see at night hence why automakers invented Hi-Beams so you dont blind oncoming traffic.......... i just replaced and properly adjusted both my headlights on my f250........ they're brand new....... and these guys fancy mis aimed bulbs are brighter than my Lo-Beams....... they'd probably see farther with regular bulbs if they were aimed properly.

A lot of people actually need more ground clearance for legitimate reasons. I've had way more damage from bottoming out than I have from the angles changing because of a 2" lift.

Scotty is right, I finally got rid of mines sure it was coo riding around people amazed by it. Kid's love em but at the end of the day too many problems. Fuel, curb rash going through the Drive-through fixing the front end suspension. Shop's trying to overcharge you for dumb stuff. Buying new tires way more sooner than normal. It's a inconvenience when you look at it if you do catch a flat tire oh man. I just got tired of spending money on it and it didn't benefit me whatsoever. Not to mention finding a parking spot. It was fun while it lasted but it quickly got old. Some guys don't mind it but yeah I'm not doing that again. Rather put my money away and use it to make a decent return.
He picked the perfect vehicle to make an example of, a truck with IFS. Mine has a modest lift with a straight front axle and I've had zero problems.
There is no problem with lifting a vehicle no matter what type. This is however a problem with cheap lifts and spending money to do it correctly.

@@signkutter9218 I've had GM IFS,ford IFS, and multiple solid axles. You won't get any argument from me! The IFS systems are just more expensive to do right. Fords old IFS (the TTB) was especially difficult to maintain alignment, those split dana 44's were just a pain.

Lift kits require a combination of quality kit and quality installation. There are kits that improve the ride and performance without sacrificing reliability. Coil suspension have much greater success than IFS. There's a reason some kits are $3000-$5000 instead of $1200

@@AV84USA You can change pinion angles and put 2 piece driveshafts with spaces if required to help the geometry. For the front end of IFS, you need a lot more fabricating and mounting but you can change the geometry. The fact is most people don't, most people buy cheap lift kits, hell where I'm from we used to use hockey pucks to lift up trucks.

One of my trucks has a 4” lift . A proper lift, property installed, most of these issues aren’t relative. Yes they lose fuel mileage, they’d to be expected. I have 340k miles on that truck. I’ll let you know when I have an issue due to a lift. And hold your hats, it’s a Chevy.

Been driving lifted trucks and Jeeps for over 20 years. No problems related to lift when done right. In fact, one of our company GMC Canyons has 391k miles with a 3” lift and still going strong. My company Silverado has a 3.5” lift since almost new, no issues at 111,000.
i'm actually ok with all of this, sometimes i care about my vehicle being fun and something i enjoy looking at more than i do about everything being in spec , i'll deal with slightly worse gas mileage and parts wear (within reason) just so my vehicle is something i enjoy being in.

I would rather it be useful off road, lifted on stock diameter actually hurts off-road performance. You want it as low as you can go on the biggest tires you can fit. The tires give you clearance, a lift kit won't get your axle clearance any better

I have a 12" lift and 40" tires. I love it! If you take care of it, get it serviced on time, and have the money for it, they're awesome. You gotta be a fan of lifted trucks to appreciate them, amd understand the expenses and limitations, and that being said I wouldn't change a thing! 2015 Silverado 1500, 117k miles.
All depends on IFS or if it’s independent suspension. Live axle is only affected on tail shaft angles, which is only a problem if you don’t lower the gearbox. Departure and arrival angles are greatly improved with small lift kits and bigger tyres. It also matters what you plan to do with the vehicle.

That's why I love my $35ooo 40 year old squarebody .straight axles and everything angled correctly ,different steering arm to prevent frame cracking due to steering box binding .

Scotty, when you turn the switch of ignition, you do it fast. An Ingenier of Chrysler in Mexico, told me to go slow in order let the pressure of the fuel line to stabilize. In my turbo experience it will last for ever, same thing when you get to a final stop, take some time for the sistem to get stable. The gas pump will last much longer.

Funny you should post this today, Where i live it snowed today, A lady was stopped at the stop light with a almost new Toyota Corolla, Guy was behind her in a lifted F-250 With big wide tires which are the worst thing in the world for stopping on snow and Ice, he hit the back of the toyota and because it sat so high it missed the bumper completely on the toyota and wiped out the deck lid, both rear tailights and both quarter panels, almost made it to the back window, didn't hurt the truck, it had a big homemade square tube bumper / winch and grill guard, Bet his insurance company is not going to be too happy, from a safety standpoint, Even though they look cool, trucks lifted as high as his was should be for off road use only.

I live in canada...i use to move cars from dealers to auction sites or other used car dealership...i had a pickup with lifts and it was frickin windy that day and i swore the truck was gonna flip...
Big disadvantage is lifted trucks for a person under 6' tall is good luck reaching anything under the hood with out a step stool or having to sit under the hood to change anything. My old girl is a 1984 Chevy 4x4 and she sits a little higher than most but a great and tough as hell pickup. 1993 Chevy 350 TBI with 700R4 and I love it!
Lifted trucks are useless for towing and they're useless for hauling anything in the bed. Example try loading a refrigerator in the back the pickup with the 8-in lift kit versing one at stock height and then tell me which one's easier. I guess lifted trucks has their place mainly if you want to go play in the mud or your compensating for something but if I had my choice between a jacked up pick up and my F-150 that's a stock height I'll take the pickup at stock height every time

Here in good old Northwest Washington we got guys with lifted everything. There was a guy grinding on massive mud tires on the freeway and it sounded like a plane taking off. I've been seeing alot of those fancy new Tacoma and 4Runners built for Overland that are also daily drivers. Not a drop of mud anywhere spotless. There was a guy with a rally build Turndra used as a daily driver as well

Yeah I had a 2006 Chevy 1500 with a Rancho 6 inch lift and my ball joints kept going out however did not experience any other wear issues and I sold it after putting about 100,000 miles on it and the engine was still doing great but I did have to get tranny rebuilt at 60,000 but I believe that was because the previous owner abused the truck pulling and hauling very heavy loads and he moved up to a 3/4 ton! My Chevy had a very smooth ride with the 35 inch Nitto Terra Grapplers Rancho suspension it rode like a Caddy!
A slight lift isn't bad, but you get over 3-4 inch and it becomes pointless. Even if you have 11in of lift, your clearance is still limited by the front and rear axles.

If you're going to lift it, do the bumpers like this. You should still maintain legal clearance because that's what other vehicles are engineered for. Just make it easy to unbolt when you go rock climbing if needed.

I work with a guy who used to be a cop, and he said the vast majority of lifted vehicles are actually illegal because they don't adjust the bumper heights after they lift the body
Biggest mistake when people lift the front their truck is keeping the stock upper control arms. That is what causes the geometry to get all out of alignment. I put 2.5 inch leveling kit on my 2018 Silverado and spent the extra $200 for the correct upper control arms. Everything is nice and happy. No alignment problems, no wear issues and CV shafts are level and happy.

Not really, it would be worse if the sedan rear-ended the truck because of the height of the bumper of some trucks. The truck in this video isn't very high and wouldn't be much damage. Plus the chev in this video was done wrong to begin with. Lifted Trucks are only somewhat death traps when done poorly/cheaply or way overkill for highway use (Like a 20" lift on 53's)

Anyone else notice that rig is 2wd? When lifting or lowering a vehicle you change all steering and drivetrain angles. You change one you need to change/correct all of them if you want things on your vehicle to last. After all the corrections I did to do to get everything into stock spec on my lifted 84' Toyota pickup 4x4 my rig handles great on or off road. Just hoping the 4cyl lasts to it's first birthday of 500,000 miles. A V6 or V8 conversion is in the fore seeable future, so at least till then.

You just gotta make sure the angle of the dangle is correct and you'll have no worries. Angle finders are your friend.
With the wider tires come deep dish rims. These move the weight off center of the wheel bearings. Thru leverage it puts more stress and wear on the bearing. Definitely shorting life span of the wheel bearings. Same with leverage on the steering components. I say the engineers spent a long time making everything work a long time as soon as you start changing you can no longer blame them. 75 ford high boys came lifted from the factory.
the deep lip has to do with offset, not so much width though

When a vehicle is turning there is side load on the wheel bearing…hopefully the engineers didn’t just design the wheel bearings for centred loads. Same goes for the forces on the steering components.
Other than in extreme cases these added loads don’t exceed what the components are designed for. Yes it’s worse, but it’s negligible with minor lifts and slightly bigger wheels.
The lowrider guys know all about that. Those tiny wheels sticking out is brutal on bearings. I worked with a guy who re packed them every 15k miles lol
My brother used to work with a guy who put oversize tires on his jeep. Every year he was changing the wheel bearings.
Seems most good and experienced mechanic have the same or almost the same character. Used to live close to one, about the same age as you sir. Doesn't take any crap on unproven theories on car fix and mods. Even to the extend of giving you a good lecture for using a wrong name for spare parts. You know, there's the actual name and commonly used name of calling a spare parts. He is a good honest and good mechanic, nice to talk to about cars and maintenance. Ive never had a lifted truck that DIDNT wear the tires terribly. Its unavoidable. Part of the deal. Doesnt matter how often you rotate em or if you install adjustable cam bolts or run adjustable UCAs. They always wear on the inside drastically. Chevys were always the worst
It's just not the case if it's done correctly, I don't know about new vehicles but on my squarebodies it's just cut and reweld the spring mounts on the axles to correct pinion angle, drop the transmission crossmember to adjust your driveshaft angle, taller pitman or crossover steering if you're going over 4", and extended swaybar brackets over 4". Top it off with all new bearings and poly bushings and you've got yourself a 4-8" lift in a 40 year old truck that drives like a brand new one
Dont forget blinding oncoming traffic with your lights, and bumper height disparities can make some dangerous damage to mere sedans. What do you think of the monster wide tires the extend past the fenders 10-12 inches?

I think a LOT of the people who are having these lift kits put on their vehicles are mainly going for a "cool looking" Mall crawler and will NEVER see terrain that will take advantage of the increased ground clearance or traction gotten with the tires and lift kits.
Myself, I am happy with my first generation ZJ Grand Cherokee with just a couple inches of lift and slightly taller tires than stock. And if ya find one with the factory tow package then you also get the added bonus of a limited slip rear end for more wheels helping it to keep on moving in whatever direction you are trying to go!

The tires are always out of balance/alignment. Don't forget the never used tow hitch. Either the triple ball thats still brand new shiny, or the 4ft high adjustable one that's also brand new shiny

Your correct as usual Scotty, but having lived in Texas, you know a fella has to out do the next fella. That's why my 21 Silverado 2500 is leveled on 37's with 20 x 10's. But I'm not completely stupid as I get a truck allowance and paid millage from my employer.
Scotty is so right about the bad modification at the suspension system of lifting angle .
My friend rescued me from work after being there for 24 hours when tropical storm Allison hit Houston in 2001. He had a jeep that was lifted way up. We went through some very high water. The engine got really hot though from the water pulling on the tires.
Transmission and rear axle probably have water in them. I'd sell asap'

Hey, Scotty as an ex tech, i sell parts now, i have had cutomers keep bringing back axle shaft for warranty. Many of these warranties were on lifted trucks, they just couldnt understand why they kept destroying axle shafts.

No lift kit will void a warranty. Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. Look it up.
Lifted trucks are status symbols for smaller nether regions. Good thing I do not own a lifted truck......I'd be in turtle mode all the time. It's a tough world, better not lift it.
If a lift kit is designed with proper suspension geometry factored in, then alot of times the lift kit is better than stock suspension. However, there are alot of kits that don't even know the meaning of suspension geometry.
My 6" BDS suspension on my chevy is alot better than stock. Now my truck dosen't ride like a brick!
That's why you use a quality lift. My cv axles are at perfect angles. Now people cranking the torsion keys are another story
I did a “level kit” on my 16 JK. Raised the front 2”& the rear 1”. I changed shocks to Billstein 5100s & added bump stops to prevent over travel along with a steering stabilizer. I went with 33” ATs avoiding 35” MTs; overall tried to cover my bases. Hopefully I didn’t mess up my Jeep. It doesn’t ride as good on the road but kicks butt of road & looks great!

What you did was pretty minimal and shouldn't have any appreciable effect on suspension geometry.
If you haven't taken it in for a full alignment since doing the work, do so.
My '15 jku didn't start needing serious geometry compensation until I got to 4" lift.
I've put a 3.5 inch lift on my jeep Cherokee 17 years ago and it's still going strong. I of course have had to do a lot of basic maintenance on it through out the years but have never had any problems with any major failures to my drive trane and this jeep has seen many of jeep trails.
Btw, thos 5100's are known to be a pretty stiff ride. I'm super happy with the Fox 2.0's
A quality lift kit is a must. It drops the front dif so the shaft angles are correct. Also, a truck with a live axle is a different animal. I changed springs, shocks, link arms, and sway bar brackets and it has a smoother ride then before with more travel. I have been playing with lifted trucks for over 40 years. I also am good friends with someone that is in the business... And he is on the inside, design, manufacturing, etc., not retail. And the Yota... In the high teens MPG? LMAO!!! A friend of mine has one and 13-14 is on a good day, down hill with a tail wind. My Cummins powered Dodge with a 4' lift and big tires gets 17-18! And that is a 3/4 ton! I have two of them, one auto and the other 6 speed. One is a hotrod with a bigger turbo, exhaust, intake, program, etc.
Thankful my Warlock came with a pre-installed lift. Only an inch but it feels worlds different to me and I know it's installed right

If you’re going to lift your truck, use a quality kit that includes all the components to keep shaft geometry correct, and has the replacement heavier components where needed. I had the dealership install a 7” lift on my truck. 60,000+ miles so far and I’ve never had a single problem. Tires are wearing evenly, all driveline and suspension components are still going strong. It really comes down to choosing the right lift kit.
To be honest the drive line looked pretty well on that lifted truck , 2 piece driveshaft. Some kits come with front diff lowering mounts But still lift kits are for deep pocket boys with expensive toys

Even as a kid it became my lifelong Passion to modify the hell out of everything. I have had dozens of lifted 4 wheel drive pick UPS and S UV's in my lifetime. Some Set UPS worked better than others. Oh and stay away from Jeep's.. They are an endless money pit. Once you start thinking with a Jeep, yeah it becomes a snowball chain reaction action and you will never be finished with it. Wise man once told me you can either have a Jeep or money in the bank but never both. I tend to keep things on the mild side now and just pay attention to the small details like pinion angles and gear ratio.

I hold a B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering, and worked in chassis dynamics for not one, but two different OEM companies over a 35-year career. MOST of what Scotty says here is insignificant for lifts 2.5-inches or less. In fact, LOWERING a vehicle below its 'lowest OEM ride height' is worse on most components than raising it. Keep in mind, that 'bare-minimum 6-cylinder GMC Sierra ride-height is up to 4-inches lower than the 'topped-out' OEM 4x4 Sierra sporting the 6.2-liter Vortec. The shaft alignment angle IS important, but for U-joints, nominal is anything below 10-degrees off-center, and CV joints are 'Constant Velocity' joints for a reason...properly maintained, angles below 20-degrees are also 'insignificant'. A well-designed 4-inch lift kit compensates angles to return them to 'near OEM specs', so this is where 'cutting corners' shortens life. Now, you want to know what DOES destroy a suspension or chassis? Wide tires, differing wheel offsets, oversized (height) tires, 'mud lug' tires (aka 'Gumbo Monster Mudders', etc.), poor or no 'after-lift' alignment, lack of frequent alignments, poor tire balancing, bent rims (frequent, with off-road use), modified springs (A BIG FACTOR...which is a MAJOR contributor when discussing 'lowered vehicles') and modified engines and drivetrains (200-hp to 600-hp, you're going to break things...and you're going to throw ALL of your alignments off when you go from a stock 4L60 transmission to a 6L80 with a divorced transfer or overdrive).
Even things such as 'harder dampening shocks and struts' can greatly contribute to severe life-shortening of suspension and drivetrain components.
With 'lowering a vehicle', if you merely 'chop the springs', you have effectively changed the spring-rate...and for the stiffer 'worse', too...keep in mind, a coil spring is a 'spiral spring bar' that 'springs' by 'twisting'...so if you cut off a coil, you've cut off anywhere from 1-2 feet of spring...well, if it was 8-feet of bar originally, holding 1,000-pounds of sprung mass each, that's 10.41-lbs/inch of 'spring resistance'...but if it's still holding that same 1,000-lbs after chopping a coil off (that was 18-inches long uncoiled), it is now providing 12.82-lbs/inch of resistance...you've 'harshened your ride'...sometimes enough to shear axles, spindles, etc...not to mention detrimentally affecting handling, damping, etc. Again, you've got to 'buy new springs', not modify what you have...(in this case, a smaller wire diameter to return your spring rate to 10.4-lbs/inch, as it was before).
The worst damage I've seen has come from wider tires/wheels, which put undue lever forces on the front spindle/bearing. It is premature failure that takes the form of total loss of control...and sadly, there is NO AFTERMARKET DESIGN that compensates for this! It doesn't take a lift-kit to put wide tires/wheels on.
As for the most 'money-robbing, blood-sucking' car...I had to laugh when Scotty's opening shot shows him in an old Vette...as I had one. A 1970 454-4-speed...and one sentence should tell you how agonizing it was to the pocketbook...'It has 5-U-Joints in the rear-end, alone!!!'
De-modify that truck, sell the tires and extras and re-fit it, and you've got one sweet reliable daily driver.
