I am Durville Oliver a Jamaican Musician Keyboard Player I am very impressed and bless by your music ministry. There is a lot I am learning from your videos. It just work out like a miracle that I ended up watching your awesome chord movement that you have been demonstrating on the Keyboard. I need to enhance my playing as well so I will continue to watch and enhance my Piano skills. Be bless!
Wow, a class act. Besides being an excellent instructor, you show your true colors in the end, when you reveal, "I am not anything special or any person special that I have insight to do just these amazing things. At the end of the day, I just want to die empty, so that’s the reason I’m willing to share why I think what I think and what I do what I do when I’m playing…And remember, that today is a new day, a new life and a new opportunity to become a better you." CLASSY.
I'm definitely a step five musician. I love the notion of infinite progressions. Theoretically, the chords are moving in circles (4ths, 5ths, etc.). By mixing up the circles, along with different mode changes for each chord, the progressions are infinite. In jazz, a similar approach is used when comping and soloing. We understand this as playing inside and outside of the changes. Anyway, love this video. I got a few ideas from it. Oh, I also feel the oil (for those who understand what this means. :-) Keep it up!
I love this brother's ability and he talks only as needed. He gives a great lesson. Very glad I clicked. "I just want to die empty.". What a way to live.
I believe it is possible to overplay. I've found that most musicians have not actually worked in an orchestral setting and understand the dance of instrumentation. In church, except in the case of playing an instrumental solo, the musician is to accompany the singer(s). So many musicians try to show all their skills that they leave the congregation. I have often told musicians I work with that when people walk away focused on your playing more than the move of the Spirit, you overplayed. This is true for singers as well.
+Starkovich Forster couldn't have said it better!!! excellent quote... "If people walk away focused on your playing more than the move of the Spirit, you overplayed..."
I just found you yesterday evening. I did full-time music ministry for 20 years, and I like your spirit. wish you had been in my circle of associates in my days of laboring. I only do music part time now, but what an inspiration you are.
+Starkovich Forster HalleluYah powerful ! I was just listening to a word today talking about how the church has become entertainment based and not Holy Spirit filled worship/warship. He was talking about how we equate anointing to talent and how this keeps us as a congregation from experiencing the true move of our Heavenly Father because we are looking for the wrong things, Thanks for sharing that wisdom. It's confirmation .shalom
+HalleluYah HalleluYah, I wish there was a platform for teaching spiritual balance to music ministry people. Being famous has become synonymous with success in ministry so much that there are few servants left.
I'm so amazed by your fingers. I believe that these tutorials won't be 100% practical for me but it does widen my eyes and motivate me to learn more and more: ) thank God for what he has done in your life!
You are an amazing teacher...I'm self taught, somewhat accomplished - play by ear, with perfect pitch and wanted say as one who learned the piano simply by watching, kenesthetically, your videos are pure gold. I've played all these chords in some form or fashion over the years, but your break downs on expanding them is brilliant. You've opened doors here. These are tremendous teaching videos. Thank you, keep up the great work!
You kept saying that it would get harder like it would be discouraging, when instead it would be motivating. The fact that I am watching this lesson gives me hope to learn piano in the way I have been wanting to learn.: )
Hi Im David C and I have been playing piano and synth for Tony Orlando for almost 21 years, As to your question about what level we generally accompany the artist in. I would have to say I generally stay between level 2 and 3 most of the time.. Artists don't like overplaying, BUT they DO want to be led through the changes. Sometimes these flourishes and substitutions can inspire even greater performances out of the artist. This method is absolutely priceless and I am actually about to purchase it for myself. My issue is that I don't know which ones are the right choices for myself. LOL Upon viewing a couple of your you tube videos, i have already picked up a couple of new tricks. PLEASE keep this stuff coming.. You are doing important work by spreading this knowledge. GOD bless you !!!
Hi, I woke this morning itching to go on you tube to see what I could learn, but before doing so I thanked God for life and to help stop the many wars the planet is undergoing and I thanked him for guiding me to return to learning the piano after 35 years. I asked for guidance for today's lesson, then BAM, there you where. Now, I've watched many lessons but non as soulful and suave as you. I experience that soul when I listen to music and to play it must be so spiritually uplifting as if making love via music. If I . No, when I learn to play like you I will be so overjoyed. Thank you for sharing. I will follow your tutorials. Stay blessed.:-)
Thanks so much... Music is certainly an expression of the heart and soul... You are soooo right!!!! More important than any of this, I'm so glad that you're returning to your passion... this time it will be much more life-fulfilling than ever before!!! Much love, KC :)
I humbly submit a a 2 level, yes you can go to far, God bless you for sharing. I've been playing for years, and your gift of sharing has brought me to a new level, I still love the organ, but the PIANO IS BECOMING MY FRIEND!
I believe in flowing in the anointing and being led by the Spirit of God when it comes to following a artist or soloist period. We have to understand that as musicians we are vessels that God created to give him glory and when we learn that, then and only then can we shine.
I'm a simple guy just like you kc. But im pressured from my band members and singers for more. So its all about your audience and its good to be able to fit in any category. So know your audience and what they want...playing 'too much' is relative.
Great job! I'm an old guy blessed to be a step 2 or three due to guys like you. Yeah I'm beginning to see that flowing with the spirit is more important than flashing chops. Love guys who can do both. Fewer than few of those. You are probably included in the list of those who can.
I'd like to tell you that I'm from South Africa and I have been watching your videos online and Im fascinated. I can tell you that my band is on another level because of you. Thank you Sir for making piano seem easy for us.
I just discovered you this morning and though I don't play as much as you do, you and I have the same kind of mindsets about playing keys. I'm gonna learn a lot from you and I'll be sharing the stuff I learn with others. Now, to answer your question, I believe that SIMPLICITY IS THE KEY.
This has re-sparked my desire to play the keys for the Kingdom. I would like to go through all 5 steps/ levels. All 5 steps are important because some situations require more skill and others less. It's all about what's respectfully appropriate at the moment. Bless you!
it's hard stop to listen this vídeo, he teatch very well and dives into the sound. i liked the way he show the music. he is enjoing and help me to learn. sorry for my english, i'm not american. but i had to write how this guy is doing me go back to study piano to play better. Thanks KC!
Mercy, you are fab !! I'm from a country, boogie, pentecostal background. I am now trying to broaden my horizons. Love your videos, and am learning greatly !! You did ask a question about doing too much. I recently attended a black church, the pianist was amazing, but playing for an artist singing Amazing Shall Ever Be My Song of Praise. Started slowly, but progressed into so many inversions{though they were fabulous} started taking away from the beautiful artists voice, and got so busy, in the end, less would have been more.. God Bless, you have it right, simple is best in many cases.
Thanks Thanks&Thanks! Theroy, harmony&progressions displayed in a cool/fun way, this is totally awesome! KC, you ROCK&thanks again! I won't be basic anymore even after 2yrs of music school, but the debt is still there Lbvvs! Practice was always encouraged/done but if you can't link the peaces, you're still lost as well as basic!
Man... I've purchased all of the pretty simple music video series for this very reason!! I love how KC breaks things down. I can always find my level of proficiency. I know that it may seem like a light thing but i have always struggled to grow because I've had a hard time finding a bridge between where I am and where i want to be. Based on the levels in this video I am at level 3. I want to be at 5 so my next step is to learn the concepts around level 4! Thanks KC!
Yes. Musicians sometimes are do doing too much during the actual singing portion of the song. But I'm only a level 2. Still learning and practicing. Praying for your ministry gift. God bless.
Music is all about sounding good. If adding a lot of chords sounds good the use them. I love a lot chord changes. sometimes simple works. At the end of the day if the audience loved it then you did a great job.
I just love your attitude and way of teaching. There's something so pure and charismatic about you. I see you really love what you're doing. Thank you for that. I'm trying desperately to expand my playing style and although I'm not even near your realm of skill, you encourage me. A little bit frustrate me but I guess that's the emotion I need to forge on. :)
between 2-3 step..I do believe I enjoy when a musician knows how to play simple at the right spots and shine their light(fanciness) in sweet spots. But I think if you are playing behind someone..it should be to aid them and compliment them...not out play them or tell the audience to look at you on the keyboard or organ through your playing. If you do it well it enough the small little pockets will be enough to highlight your playing ability. When alone...I notice that people enjoy something they relate to...which is usually simple chords with small grace notes and moderate passing tones. In other words, I think a musician is more effective when they cater to God or the singer, choir, or band they are playing with.... versus as playing with the attitude of look what I can do. Not to say that being able to do the fancy stuff is a bad thing..I love to here cool passing chords and really sweet tones out of the cuff...but I think true mastery is knowing when to apply it at the appropriate time. Just my thoughts..thanks for the vid.
Good Morning Teacher. These chords that you shown. I'm making a track from it to worship too. Im going to continue watch and learn from you. Thank you for your anointing.
I'm at step 4/5 but I don't necessarily understand the theory behind all of it. I usually just stumble upon stuff that sounds good to my ear. I'm trying to gain more knowledge so I can be ready to apply those moves at any given time and not be essentially guessing at what I'm playing and hoping it turns out right lol especially in keys I'm not the most accustom to playing in.
I'm André from Brazil. I saw your channel last week. Guy, you're blessed… I'm trying to take some things that you learn here.. is really amazing… the better thing is: You enjoy when you play.. music for me is that. Congratulations for your playing and the way that you love music… André Luiz - (from Roland Brazil)
Hi. I think this is a great video both the lesson and the talk and the video production. I think if I practised more I could be at level 2 easy. The beauty of accompaniment is backing someone up, but when they give way for you to shine then shine, but do not forget to give it back. Never drown out others or draw attention to your playing when backing them up.
I was Daryl Coleys MD for decades. I learned how to make a beautiful canvas for him to paint on. That means I didn't play everything I could. I paid attention to what he did at all times and I learned to accompany him. In all the time that I played for him, he only told once that I was doing too much.
+heavenlydove1920 AWESOME!!! I'm excited for you and your musical journey... let me know if there's anything I can do to help out... I have lots of other free vids on my channel... Much love and many blessings
Always compliment the singer or leader. "There is nothing more impressive than a well played Rest." I have been a studio musician for over 50 years. If you have had to mix a recording you can fully appreciate that less is more.
the question you asked at the end. I've been playing music for a long time and that question is always on my mind! I think theres simply a balance where you play just the right amount. playing around with rhythm is crucial but if the bassist is playing too much then you gotta leave room for him to show off and the other way around. Not too many people playing too much for sure! Its like 5 people sitting in a room and having a discussion(or an argument :D)
Man, I know it's a bit late to comment about this video, but i must say... I really love how you show about your passion about music and want to show people how to improvise about how to learn yourself about the music and feelings behind it. Keep up the good work! You're the best Piano teacher I've seen in my whole life. Now now. Take my sub&like and be sure to upload more videos!!!
K.C. once again that was a dope video. defintely gonna work out those step 4 & 5 moves. I like stuff simple too, but I also like to turn up when I'm by myself at times.
I feel like a musician can do too much at times, but at the same time it's there preference. Myself I'm like a 3 step 3 so I wouldn't have to worry about doing too much, but I would like to do like step 5 but I can't do it right now so I'm going to work on it, and thank you for putting up all these videos for us.
Hey KC I believe that there is beauty in simplicity that there is a such thing as doing too much but the key is doing things in moderation not doing to little but not doing too much. not be afraid to learn new things but what to you and when to use it.
To answer your first question...yes there is a such thing call doing to much. You have to present the song first so your audience can hear and recognize what you are playing. Also doing to much can throw some singers that aren't experience like others. And I'm more of a step 3 guy. God bless you Man of God. Keep pouring out your gift that God blessed you with.
I want to thank you dearly for these steps. I consider my self a step 2. I've been wondering how to start chording with my left hand since I have to run the bass on board due to no bass player. How ever, I am going to apply this left hand chording and go from there. I'm trying to bring my choir up and inhance our worship in Gods house. God bless you!
Hi I play piano in church, so I'm probably a three to four but my style is very different. I am pretty accomplished but not as Jazz oriented. Your sounds are amazing and I would like to learn to play more like that, or Incorporated into what I already do. I definitely think people can over play and I find there should be a nice balance. If somebody is being showcased then of course give him a moment or two to shine, but after a while too much of of a good thing becomes overwhelming. Love your music
Hi KC,I'm so glad the Lord lead me to your website.May his grace cover you and your family for the rest of your lives!

Your attitude and approach to music is unmatched on TH-cam. Thank you for sharing a part of who you are.

KC, you're a good dude. I'm 50 and getting back into the piano after 30 years. Thanks for being part of my journey.
Your skill and your art to play is the best of the best. Absolutely wonderful. I am from Austria, Europe.
Dude you are so modest, you have an amazing gift. Peace and love
I'm definitely learning from you, K.C. you're one of the best. Thank You !!

this is a very balanced view...the best answer I've seen yet
Great job! I'm an old guy blessed to be a step 2 or three due to guys like you. Yeah I'm beginning to see that flowing with the spirit is more important than flashing chops. Love guys who can do both. Fewer than few of those. You are probably included in the list of those who can.
And yes sir i started with your first lesson to refresh and regroup my chords, can't wait to purchase more from you. .

I just discovered you this morning and though I don't play as much as you do, you and I have the same kind of mindsets about playing keys. I'm gonna learn a lot from you and I'll be sharing the stuff I learn with others.

Bless you!
it's hard stop to listen this vídeo, he teatch very well and dives into the sound.
i liked the way he show the music. he is enjoing and help me to learn.

Thanks KC!
I'm step 1 musician I also support simple playing in music to remain the musicality. God bless you
Hey KC, thank you so much for sharing your music! I love the way you play. transcribe it and practice it. That helps me and is a lot of fun.
I'm a step 2-3 but learning more as I go it's an adventure for me but feels good knowing you can play instruments.....besides drums, guitar,& bass

Mercy, you are fab !! I'm from a country, boogie, pentecostal background. I am now trying to broaden my horizons. Love your videos, and am learning greatly !! Justin Wright yt? iy Unum
Justin Wright this video is just him
Showing off. I don’t think he wants to teach via this TH-cam video
@@TH-camkert I bought the video from his website.... He has a break down of every thing he does in this video there.
NHaezer is it detailed/helpful?
It is... It teaches what it's intended to teach

Bro I’m step -1 and I really appreciate this video. Major goals
Sir, your videos are amazing. Thank you.
This man is the fucking Neo of music.. what a whole total understanding.. amazing.
I’m loving this. Thank you.
I'm glad I your video because I have a keyboard now. I used to play long time. I can't wait to start
this is truly amazing. God bless you for all ur videos
Glad you enjoyed it! You're right - too much shine and the message is lost... find our place, then open up when the time is fitting. Much love,
KC :)
Tired of playing those basic chords and really need a lift??? Here's how to go from Basic to AMAZING in ONLY 5 Steps!!!

Looking long time for this. Thanks. I got some cool stuff to learn. Hope to be using this stuff for real soon.
Hey, I just wanted to say your comment about wanting to die empty really spoke to me. Thank you for that little gem of perspective.
I was Daryl Coleys MD for decades. I learned how to make a beautiful canvas for him to paint on. That means I didn't play everything I could. I paid attention to what he did at all times and I learned to accompany him. In all the time that I played for him, he only told once that I was doing too much.
Looks like the piano gives you so much pleasure. I want that! but am finding it so so difficult.
You ARE special! Just amazed that I found you. I'm a new subscriber! 2016 is my year to step up.
+heavenlydove1920 AWESOME!!! I'm excited for you and your musical journey... let me know if there's anything I can do to help out... I have lots of other free vids on my channel... Much love and many blessings
Always compliment the singer or leader. "There is nothing more impressive than a well played Rest."
I have been a studio musician for over 50 years. If you have had to mix a recording you can fully appreciate that less is more.
Dude is too Cool... Thank you brother.. From those chords any things is possible...
Very good! Thank you for providing so much interesting content! Jomar, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
the question you asked at the end.
Hi KC!I don't know what step I am, but I appreciate much the Step 5..thank you for sharing skills and techniques..
Are you in Ab?
Fantastic, generate melodious sound with ease.
Man, I love this infinite progression stuff 😍
Hey KC I believe that there is beauty in simplicity that there is a such thing as doing too much but the key is doing things in moderation not doing to little but not doing too much. not be afraid to learn new things but what to you and when to use it.
I’m at step 1. Goal is to be at step 2 by the end of the year.
Did you reach it ?
Where you at with it bro?
Hey I’m a good 2nd level player and I feel that if you got it it will show on it’s own. “Your gift will make room for you...”. Thanx all the insights.
I'm 15 and I think I'm lvl3 based on this God bless you and hopefully next yr I'll be looking at 4
To answer your first question...yes there is a such thing call doing to much.
Thank you for this! This is awesome!
