How I Teach Kids to Love Science | Cesar Harada | TED Talks

  • At the Harbour School in Hong Kong, Cesar Harada teaches citizen science and invention to the next generation of environmentalists. He's moved his classroom into an industrial mega-space where imaginative kids work with wood, metal, chemistry, biology, optics and, occasionally, power tools to create solutions to the threats facing the world's oceans. There, he instills a universal lesson that his own parents taught him at a young age: "You can make a mess, but you have to clean up after yourself."

I think people love and appreciate science by default, it's so important to foster and cultivate the seeds of curiosity. Some unfortunately develop a life long hatred of education/academics from negative school experience.

+x0men Westboro Baptist Church protested at my high school maybe 5 years ago. Only roughly 2 people were protesting though and it wasn't even Fred Phelps. They also protested at some other locations in the city that same day. Your comment proves that the existence of WBC serves as a helpful teaching tool to help people see what crazy looks like.

just literally fell in love with this talk.I mean, I wish we could have such classes, where your imagination won't count against, but on the contrary lead to something unusual, eccentric , at the same time, beneficial and good.

Programming is fun and challenging at the same time! It's only fun if you have good teachers. If not, then it is challenging and stressful.
Out of all the instructors I had so far, only 25% can actually teach programming well. Sadly, I had to teach myself most of the time....it's really stressful and challenging, and programming is already hard enough. So without good support and teaching, there is a higher chance of failure. That's why a lot of people change majors from Computer Science to something else.....because the instructors aren't good.
Once I understood how to code well, it isn't too bad. In fact, I feel somewhat empowered because now I can possibly make something that may improve lives!
With programming, you need to learn new things constantly, because technology changes really fast.
I definitely recommend giving computer science a chance! You don't know what you are capable of until you try it. :)

Thanks you so much for the reply! I tried taking a python course, online, but never got that into it. But It's something i will definitely look into, as a possible career path. To have the ability and freedom to create stuff excites me.

Well Science is a better notion than so called man made religions. Science makes us understand, it lets us explore. All you who are against science, I can understand its hard for you to face the reality & want to be with your religion. But that's your choice! I feel Science should be a part of every individuals life, every individual can stick to 1 subject and trust me things will be better. As when we pass it on to the next generation, they will carry on from where we stopped. This is why I am in love with science. Only if you devote your life for it, you will understand what I meant in my first post. ^_^

Wow this is a amazing teacher it must be great to be a teacher in other countries that isn't America, since we're restricted to tests so teachers can't teach what they want, they have to teach what the test has. There's no free lance of teaching in America.

Really fascinating, congratulations for the dedication!
But to teach science like him, with all that technology and money to create what they want to, only exists there.
This is not the reality in the most schools of the world. Let me correct myself; this is really really far from other school's reality, specially in "third world" countries.
So, how to teach kids to love science?
