I wish the Chinese takeaway was still open, the Welcome was excellent in its day but unfortunately it closed 20 years ago, if you had gone into the grounds of St Johns church you would have found the famous grave of Molly Leigh the witch of Burslem, her grave is at a completely different angle to all the others, Burslem was once a thriving town with a nice atmosphere and good variety of shops, sadly those days are long gone.

I grew up in Burslem and it was pretty bad back then, about 20 years ago. It was much better though - the street you parked on had a nice Woolworths, a brilliant little independent toy shop, a sports shop, Blockbuster video and a Boots. Plus, they had a massive market on Tuesdays and Fridays that was always heaving. They might as well flatten it and build social housing, the area badly needs it.

Have to say the UK is far better than Ireland at preserving old buildings. Guaranteed if this was Ireland all those buildings would be knocked for glass monstrosities.

Not just Burslem. Half of the Potteries area is bordering on dereliction and has been for a long time. Head down Newcastle Street towards Middleport and there are buildings down there that have been empty for decades. Sad to see.

What I don’t get so many empty buildings yeah what I don’t understand is to help get homeless if the streets at least do a unit up so they can have warmth at least get them out the cold

Attended Port Vale Away two years ago & was shocked at how much of a shithole that place is.
I’ve done 70 of the 92 league clubs, have seen a lot of run down areas before but Burslem steals the title (so far) by a very long way!

The same thing happened to both, the jobs in coal mines and steel mills were taken from them and nothing was left but desolation and drug addicts.

I think you’ll find that Burslem was under Labour council control for many years,
certainly all through the 1980’s and 1990’s when they let it go to ruin!

Don't be stupid. Burslem was already half a slum when I attended art school there in 1965. The railways of the 1800's put an end to the canals. The masses of cheap china-wear from China in the 1900's put an end to Wedgewoods & others. Coal mines closed down all over Europe in the 70's - 80's with the advent of oil fired power stations and nuclear. What else did Burslem have but canals, pottery, and coal? To blame these huge worldwide movements on the Tory's (or the Irish, or the Martians) is stupidity of the most stupid kind. If u were educated in the UK, then I'm ashamed of the UK education system.
