I bought the album when this song first came out.. I have not listened to it in decades, I am now 73 and suddenly I realize that my two sons and I were exactly what this song is about. Interesting to be listening to it now and realizing what it is really about.
YT has to be suppressing. Even tho I'm sub & Bell is ON: I don't get notifications. The last new release took me 4 days to find it. You're right, If it were a level playing field; he'd be seeing double/triple numbers at the very least. I see 'wanta be' bands with much higher #'s. But, I'm Glad Carson & other favorites don't focus on this; I'm sure they know & are aware. One day this will all change! Meanwhile I'll keep checking in with his channel to see if there's anything new~
As a middle aged man, I've seen my father tear up 2 or 3 times in my entire life. Hearing this song after his dad died is one of those times. And these words speak to my relationship with him, as much as it does the relationship he had with his dad. Powerful stuff.
I listened to a lot of Cat Stevens in the 70s. So many of those songs were pure gold and now they are barely known by many young people today. I could see Carson putting together a collection of Cat’s 70s songs for a younger crowd and I believe such a collection from him would be pure gold again!
This song hit home so much. My stepdad was an ass and always verbally made fun of me. at 12 or so, I would listen to this song for hours thinking that there was someone else out there that was going through the same thing.
I always wondered why The Other Favorites didn't cover more Cat Stevens' songs. Carson, your voice is mellowing, a smooth baritone and guitar is sounding better all the time.
This is so good it gives me chills. I got married way too young and had a daughter and a son. Wife ran around on me and we divorced. I wouldn't change anything to have the great kids I have today.
I refused to listen to this song for years because it normally reduces me to tears of regret, but not today. Now it is reminder of my father and how much I miss him. Thank you Mr. McKee. This song really exemplifies the relationship I had with him, I was young and dumb and eager to go sliding down the razor blade of life, but he kept me on a leash and tried to control me until I the day I turned eighteen and signed myself out of school and his house for good. As I look back I see I was so much like him as a youth that I think he feared I would fall into the same traps he did and was maybe trying to steer me away from them. It didn't work... We had a troubled relationship for many years because of it, but I was fortunate that we finally found a place where we could love each other for who we were and not what we expected the other to be.
Such truth in this song........the determination of the young to go their own way, dismissing the counsel of the elders. There is wisdom and power on both sides of the equation and it is the dynamic of a relationship that determines what is taken to heart and what is ignored. Very well done, young man, very well done.
You know , that's the nice thing about TH-cam . A guy searches a song and then tries to find someone that can cover it . Then he comes across guys like Carson Mckee who he would never of had the pleasure of listening to ordinarily . You young man , can sing and play excellent ! Your covers and originals are well done . Keep it up !
It's a Saturday afternoon and I'm eating a chicken parm sandwich at a local restaurant. Watching and listening to Carson makes this simple Saturday afternoon a special moment. Thanks!
Maximum respect for singing this in two voices - too many covers use the same voice for both father and son and completely ruin the meaning. A great version Carson!
Your comment on your relationship with your Father is spot on. The sad truth is because of the time differences in our experiences, while we can relate, we can't really be on the same page. It is painful for both the old and the young. You have a beautiful feel for music. Thank you for sharing it with us. It makes all of our lives better!
This just gives me shivers. So much emotion through your voice in both registers. A powerful song made more powerful by your interpretation, your voice, and your touch with the guitar. Bravo!
Man!!! So good!!! Guitar work like he was only focusing on guitar, singing like he was only focusing on singing! Truly, such good music! Be Proud, that was so good!
A hello from France! A big thank you for this magnificent cover. Our family never tires of your special voice, continue, you make us happy with every song. THANK YOU!!!
Very nice! Carson, you are a very talented young man-thanks for sharing it with us. I first heard this song as a young man and I've always loved this song, especially now that I'm the "older man". Your cover brought me joy this morning!
I haven't heard this song in years. I think I wore out my Cat Stevens record "Tea for the Tillerman" album. Great cover of this song Carson. The song reminds me of Rodney Crowell's lyrics to his song "Things I Wished I'd Said".
A true classic. I had the tea for the tillerman album..wore it out..love your version. Nicely done didn't need anything added to it..no embellishments. Just sung as it was intended...beautiful
You have done justice to this timeless classic. The quality of timbre is close to the original but with a flavour that is distinctly yours. Well done Carson
I loved what you said in the description about your dad. Having a good relationship has certainly helped you to be successful. Great version and I love Cat Stevens.💗
Very nice job on this. I bought this album when it came out, I think 1970, and learned just about every song on it. I haven't listened to it or played any of these songs in years. Brings back great memories.
Thank you so much Carson to bring back these memories, this song from my childhood. I dreamt away to my parents home and those lucky days. And still I am happy today.
Thanks for a walk down memory lane. I get excited when I see that you have posted a new video. You are awesome Carson. Really enjoy your music and style.
I grew up listening to Cat Stevens and I have to admit this was one of my least favourite songs (mainly because it was played to death at my house). But man, I gotta say I love this cover and I must admit that I never really paid close attention to the lyrics until this video. I felt the words as you sang. I also never realised until now that the octave/register (?) changes in the song were intentional with the low parts representing the father's words to the son and the high part, the son's response to the dad. I can't believe it took me this long (20+ years) to figure out what this simple song was about. One would think the title would've given it away but yeah no, my kid/teen brain at the time only paid attention to the melody.
I liked the song growing up but I didn't understand at all that it was a father and son talking back and forth. Carson really brings out the spirit of the song.
Carson, my favorite song of all time. This was my conversation with my Dad all the time in the early ‘70s. My Dad is gone and I’m getting older…miss those conversations. Great job!
Carson, thank you for doing that. Haven't heard this one for a long long time. You have a great voice and talent playing. Your choice of some of these old tunes tell me you had a great childhood by being exposed to some of the classics that seam missing in todays music.
Nice one, Carson! Love this cover. Ignore those creeps who've left 'Thumbs Down' feedback. They're of zero consequence and hide behind anonymous feedback. No true musician would behave like that. We recognise musicality and feeling when we hear it. They're not musos - just saddos. You have done Cat Stevens credit here - he could be proud of you!

I'm an old guy that was a young guy when this song was released. It's a timeless song. Thanks for sharing it!
Same here - was so young when I first heard this. Beautiful lesson - able to experience the meaning now as an "older" person.
Same here, I was a huge Cat Stevens fan back in the day. Good times and good music 👍
Me too. Always makes me cry.
@@jeffreyprice2982 I think I should have listened more than I did.
Boggles my mind that Carson doesn't have more subscribers. His voice is gorgeous. And what I nice guy.

It’s so melancholic and it really suits your voice and character

Your voice just keeps getting better, Carson, and this song is a great showcase for it.
Too late to discover the world, to early to explore space, just in time to hear Carson sing Father and Son.
I always wondered why The Other Favorites didn't cover more Cat Stevens' songs. Carson, your voice is mellowing, a smooth baritone and guitar is sounding better all the time.
Salmon Rushdie perhaps?
Lost my father for the cancer 3 years ago. Still hurts. Always will. Great redemption by the way. Tks.
Beautiful singing Carson. One of my favorite songs of all time.
me too :)

Oh yes. Carson gets to the heart of the matter. Breathtaking and gorgeous.
I saw Cat Stevens sing this in Cardiff in about 1969. At the time I related to the son.....now.....I still do 😂. This is a great performance 👍🍷
His voice is so beautiful.
Carson and Cat, so much goosebumps! If Yusuf see you he will be proud. Thank you so much!
I've been playing this song for decades...it seems to strike a chord with me...thank you for covering this one! Job well done!
You pick some great songs, Carson. You are a great singer as well.
Holy shit - one of my favourite songs, and you nailed it. Great singing, man -- and you make that guitar _speak_ .
This takes me back to when I was a kid. My father and I would sing this together often. He passed 5 years ago. Thanks for sparking a special memory.
Gorgeous. You had this old man in tears.
This 'ole lady too! I just adore this kid. He is so musically diverse...

Man, you did this justice. Grew up listening to this on vinyl. Your chords, timing, and inflection are sweet as...
Thank you Carson.
I liked the extended bassline (e.g. the F#/D) as well as the extended cords (e.g. adding g and e to D chord). Very nice variation!
Thanks for this. Well, thanks for everything you shared actually.

Every time Carson posts a 4 minute song , I end up watching it for an hour.
Carson! Gooooooosebumps from second 1 till the end! So magical. So beautiful. Thank you

Carson, you made me cry.. singing is sensitive, gentle and beautiful ! And the lyrics indeed timeless
One of my favorite tunes. My dad used this song to teach me guitar. I’m a new fan, your new original song inspired me to write a new song of my own.
Shows your empathy that you didn’t have that push pull, but you understand and can sing it with such feeling. So beautifully sung, and played
I just have to say that you are so much better than pretty much every current "famous" artist out there. Keep it up man.

Wow amazing
This was one of the very first songs I learned to play and sing in 1970. I went on to learn the entire album.

What a beautiful voice, and the song, of course...congrats

Thank you!!!!Always loved that song!
Great job man! I’m 61. These are my jams!
Another stellar job on one of my favorite songs. Thanks, Carson.
Amazing. Makes me sad and happy.
Thank you Carson. Father and Son as well as Cats in the Cradle are two songs with so much meaning.

There’s a great deep dive on the song by Yusuf himself, on the Song Exploder podcast ✌🏻 Enjoy!
