Woodturning - Burl Yew Log to Vase
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 26 มิ.ย. 2021
- Mounted on my woodturning lathe this large yew burl / burr log to wood turn into a vase. During turning it has shown its natural beauty and revealed some amazing grain patterns, colours and burrs / burls. To add a little extra feature 3 little foot was carved into the bottom to stand on and finished with Danish oil then buffed to great shine. 😊

Beautiful vase. Nice work.
The only word I can think of - Stunning...! Nice Work David...
the wood grain is very beautiful
An unbelievable piece.
Thanks so much 😀
Absolutely beautiful! I’m just getting set up for turning, but I want to make it my retirement pastime!

@@DavidsWoodturning you're welcome ‼
Beautiful vase, how dry was it when you started? Had a storm here the other night and the neighbors cedar tree lost a large limb and I'd like to try something similar but I'm worried about it cracking. I watched again and it looks like wax on one end, maybe it's dried for quite awhile?
Thanks 😀 It was about two years old air dried and correct it was wax sealed. But to be honest 2yrs for such size log is not enough to dry so was still quite wet. Will see whether it will crack over the coming weeks or not. My advise would be to rough turn into bowl/vase leaving it to about 1” wall thickness and seal the end grain after turning. Leave it for 12-16months and can go back on the lathe to finish turning. There are some methods to speed up drying but rough turning still a must to do. Nearly impossible to stop a log to crack longterm
Great project! Did you make that large scraper you were using on the outside? Thanks
Thank you :) Check out Simon Hope Woodturning for the scrapers
Very beautiful, thumb up. There is a question, will it crack if it takes a little longer?
thank you :) More likely it will as it is an end grain vase but that's just the unstoppable nature :)
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍💜💜💜💜💜
