Woodturning - A Black Cherry Log

  • Welcome back to Ian Mac Woodturning! In today's woodturning video I decided to have another go at woodturning some Cherry & tried a new method of applying black spirit dye to the wood to accentuate the grain.
    In these more natural woodturning pieces I am trying to experiment a little with turning techniques and ideas to make the outcomes a little more unique so if you have any ideas I am happy to hear them!
    I appreciate all the support on my woodturning videos and if you're interested in any of my other platforms here are the links:

    Hi Ian, I am a retired, disabled former Senior Master of Art from South Australia where I majored in Sculpture (mainly wood), Design, Graphics & a few others. This is a beautiful piece of Cherry. I am glad that you did not turn all the natural 'imperfections' away, using the black spirit dye was new to me but you certainly were right that it would accentuate the grain. It is a superb finish you have achieved on this stunning piece. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

    Nice piece Ian you almost lost me when you blacked it all out but I kept on watching and you sanded most of it off which made that lovely grain pop and high lighted the knots really makes this a stunning piece well done and two thumbs up thank you for sharing this piece with us

      Cheers Wade! The original plan was to keep it black but it didn’t look right when we’d done it so once we’d sanded it down it looked a lot better! Thanks very much for your comment mate.

    Ian, nice job! Looks aged and spalted. My undo suggestion would be to accent the live bark red to match the interior. I recently made a coffee cup using the same colors and was surprised how well it came together.

    Wow. I was surprised when you turned it off the first time and it was so white, because to me it looked kinda beige. So then you got out the color and started applying it. I did a double take and said out loud, BLUE?, and that's when you showed the bottle as if you has heard me. I laughed.
    When you were wiping the blue off and I could see the grain...WOW. The blue really showed off the grain nicely.
    Even the smaller of the two bark pieces looks like a silhouette. Really nice piece.

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha thanks for your comment! I can understand why you’d have been taken back by the application of the dye, it was a MASSIVE contrast 😂.

    • @RevdUp.Art.Fotografer
      @RevdUp.Art.Fotografer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IanMacWoodturning -- I'm all for contrast...light...med...dark & I'm into all kinds of colors. I have a really bright palette myself. I guess I had it in my head you'd do black, and I don't know why. You could just of easily used Azo Yellow, Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber,....or _____,...or _____,...or Madder Red, etc...lol.
      The spectrum is crazy full of options.
      The Blue you chose was groovy for this piece. It totally worked.

    I just had to cut down several very large limbs on a 40+ year old cherry tree. I keep hoping I'll find a wood turner who wants to turn some of the limbs into something beautiful like this. With the cost of shipping it will have to be a local artist, or someone passing through Utah by car who can pick it up. I'm still trying to find a woodworking guild locally I can work through.
