Michael has the most amazing male voice I've ever heard. Michael defies description. Listen to him singing ala Cesare Siepi!!! It is utterly amazing how Michael can sound just like Siepi and then turn around and toss off the tenor high C's and D's.

He sometimes goes one octave above or below what's actually written, which demonstrate a huge effective vocal range ("effective" meaning he not only can produce the notes, but he can produce them with agility and projection above an orchestra during an actual performance), he does different voices, and goes into multiple vocal registers. The written piece is extremely difficult, steep, mountainous, yet somehow, I can't believe I'm saying that, still much simpler than what he does. And then yes, on top of that he acts. This performance is legendary. Source : Am currently deciphering it. I've got the range, except for his high, unwritten, contra-F (I stop at contra-E), but not the agility, and the projection will be a work in progress for years to come. I did not expect him to do all this extra stuff.
What an interpretation. It made me feel I had in front that barber (the most important person in the city) telling me personally his role in the city´s affairs and plots; and, therefore, why he considered himself "il factotum della cita". In his own superbly gracious way. Thanks.

Great performance, really fun. Nice touches all over (the octave jumps, the added "lalala" etc). I was blown away when, after anticipating the timing on "Pronto prontissimo" at 4:17 (he had to say "della citta" 6 times instead of the written 5 times), he was still able to take the piece home!

I dont think you really understand. Tenors can easily hit the notes of this aria but very, very few tenors can do it justice because it requires much more than high notes.
Grande Michael! I will give this as an example to all the boring baritones that make audition with this phantastic aria that you can easily tell a story if you are smart enough, like Michael, and do not think that some high notes are just enough for making impression. Wonderful! Come back for a masterclass.
I like that he's about the first singer I've heard who doesn't give a lick about voice type and just sings what he likes and can do well. I really wish more people were like that so we could get rid of all of this horrible "classification" bs and just focus on voices.
I mean, he probably would not sing the whole role. Sure the ''classifications'' are bs if you view them as a holy rule. But it's more of a guideline, more of an observation how voices behave and it fits MOST voices. Not all of them. Also it's not like he's singing Sarastro or Osmin, although he probably could sing it, it's a lyric baritone aria, and he is a ''baritenor''. Not like he is the first person to do this, Mario del Monaco also sang this aria in concert. Many tenors sing La ci darem la mano in concert. But i get the sentiment, he is a really needed breeze of fresh air in the opera world.

@@CallasAfrica Not really, keep in mind that all range between C3 and A4 is common to tenors and baritons, so anything that is written in between can be sung by either a baritone or a tenor. Some tenors even go down to Bb2 or A2. Placido Domingo shifted from tenor to baritone roles when he got older and performed some Zarzuela baritone romanzas in concert all along his career. Of course a tenor hitting the notes in his bottom register is not the same as a baritone hitting them in the centre, same as a baritone in top register sounds different than a tenor in the centre and the notes are the same. Furthermore, any man with a 3 octave range and trained voice (e.g. from E2 to E5) can sing practically any role.
