I think he's the only singer who can keep up with the tempo he conductor sets. Most other singers run into trouble with the coloratura passages, the fast speech and pronunciation of the words, run out of breath and then are behind the orchestra.
He doesn't. He's perfectly on point and even sings admirably well. He's absolutely marvellous!!!
I happen to absolutely agree with you! Anyone who thinks Rossini's "patter songs" are easy to sing, then start carping on how singers should have better diction etc etc, should try singing one themselves, and get tangled in a torrent of words and fast tempi. I know, because I tried and I couldn't manage any of it!

Yes it's quite a tongue twister .. Thomas Allen sang this very fast too.

I've watched and listened carefully most of the interpretations of Largo al factotum n youtube (more than 15) and without a doubt this is my favourite,not only because of his great voice but most importantly for his interpretation, he really looks cooky and sure of his role, exactly how Figaro is meant to be.

Hampson is the king. Nobody can sing like him, so much emotion, so much fun, and so much raw power.
Sherrill Milnes singed Largo al Factotum too and his is better than this version
GOOD grace. Even the orchestra can't catch up with his speed. he is AMAZING!
musicalacting lol I do feel he his a step ahead of the orchestra by the fast speech, and that is actually one of the few flaws in the outstanding performance. the other I would say I'd his facial expressions when repeating "Figaro". It could just be I have a different interpretation than he does, so not a big deal there. All in all one of the best performances you could possibly see of this aria, and this is supposedly not his best.

Its nit an easy aria to perform , requires a lot of skills. very few are capable.
An absolutely tremendous performance. To sing this in the finale at the speed he does with accuracy and pronunciation is incredible.

Outstanding performance by Thomas Hampson - and even more so considering that he was singing this aria with another famous Figaro, namely, Hermann Prey (who had sung the role at the Met back in 1973), sitting right there on stage. And Hampson sings it with bravura, joy, and elan - a different type of bravura, joy, and elan from that of Robert Merrill, to be sure, but just as enjoyable in its own way.
He's officially my favorite Figaro!! Amazing!!

I used to think that Muslim Magomaev was my favorite Figaro but I keep rewatching this... he's GREAT, I love his acting skills, his expressions and the way he moves :)
Muslim Magomaev, Azerbaijani-Soviet citizen was very good in this and not only as Figaro. Unfortunately not well known in US as many great artists from behind the Red Curtain did not visit America. He died due to heart attack. He actually followed steps of Mario Lanza by switching to lighter repertoire. It was a big mistake he made.
I actually like Pietro Spagnoli's more, but this one is very good.
I believe Magomaev was more of a pop singer. He was ok at opera, but not his forte

I know nothing about opera, but i think this performance is good, easy and fun to hear, especially when you closed your eyes. His way to sing up and low note, put some strenght and go smooth, and also change his voices character during figaro is just awesome. Thank you so much for sharing this video.

Keep in mind that while this is a concert performance of an aria, but when Thomas Hampson sings this role in opera (which he did), he sings a lot more than this one aria, it's part of a 3-hour performance with a lot of singing. Notice - this is the Met, a 3800-seat theater, and there are no microphones anywhere, the audience hears the unamplified voice, and the singer projects his voice so that he is heard.
I have seen many varieties of this piece but this one is unbeatable!
