    This is often called the most difficult baritone aria in opera. Not only the tempo, but the lyrics in Italian come close to being a tongue twister.

    • @nickevershedmusic8927
      @nickevershedmusic8927 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I would have thought it’s range would be a factor in its difficulty too, or should a baritone easily be able to sing that high?

    A great performance! Ups and downs, happiness and anger in his voice, in control to perfection.
    Beside the vocal performance, the acting and the interaction with the other people on the stage is great. I am sure it was delightful to watch for the people in the place.
    Lastly, the stage design is extremely well thought. it looks like an oil painting with all the colors, objects and the customes.

      it is rumored "off stage" that if the Met Orchestra doesn't like a certain singer they will accelerate or retard the tempo...good luck messing with Peter Mattei... then again he's so lovable who would want to. (The Philharmonic have their own ways of testing and dealing with arrogant conductors...but sadly were stuck with James levine for far too long.

    Peter Mattei has an extraordinary talent!
    As an Italian, I can say that his pronunciation is truly PERFECT, and not only in Barbiere di Siviglia, but in any performance of italian operas I have seen him.
    He doesn't miss a word, and the interpretation of Figaro, the way he manages to shape his voice, and act with energy and perfect mimicry is incredible!

      @@hangeles1 me too, this is such a PERFECT opera, amazing cast, great production and lovely music. this is one of my most watched operas ever, but what is also bugging me is that there is no bluray of it. I streamed it via met opera on demand countless times, but since you can't purchase a stream permanantly in their system, you have to renew your monthly subscription each time you wish to see it. they have released other operas on disc, but I guess they know which parts of the catalogue bring in the most views. same goes for a few other favourites that I wish to see every now and then, including Le Nozze with Mattei, which was also never released on disc. In German we have this business saying: Why slaughter the cow when you can milk it too? it is sad, because it will encourage people to somehow cheat or copy it. if they released a disc for a fair price or allowed people to buy the actual stream without limiting the time span to watch it they would get more support I am sure.

    The first thing when I heard this song is from an Oddbods episode called "Jeff in Traffic" where he was stuck in traffic singing opera. I used to watch Oddbods on Disney Channel in my country when I was a kid. Then I heard it again on Tom and Jerry in "The Cat Above and the Mouse Below". Now I heard this on "Make Mine Music" in the final segment called "The Whale who wanted to Sing at the Met".
    Thank goodness! This got stuck in my head for years.
    EDIT 1/2/2024
    Beyond its frequent operatic and orchestral performances, the aria has appeared in cartoons and live-action films. The first example of the song appearing in an animated cartoon is Notes to You, released in 1941, where a cat annoys Porky Pig out of his slumber. The most popular examples in animation are The Barber of Seville (a 1944 film with Woody Woodpecker acting as a mischievous barber), the final segment from the 1946 Disney film Make Mine Music, "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met", Long-Haired Hare (1949), Magical Maestro (1952), One Froggy Evening (1955), and The Cat Above and the Mouse Below (1964). In the opening animated sequence by Chuck Jones of Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Robin Williams plays a canary singing the song. Examples in film are For the Love of Mary (1948, by actress/soprano Deanna Durbin),[7] Hopscotch (1980), Oscar (1991), and Luca (2021).[8][9][10]

    Mattei does an "end run" around the eternal-internal battle between directors and soloists, and that is breath control and the desire to maximise it by minimal movement. Mattei is so fit he can sing upside down and sideways - not that I ever want to see that - but he brings an emotional physicality to his characters - a braggodoccio to Figaro, a menace to one of his Don Giovannis, a poignant sensuality to another, and to the Queen of Sweden a warm and evocative romance, though what was the Prince thinking, having Peter Mattei sing a seductive love song to his wife.... hah! Brave man indeed! IMo he's a super star, but keep ambitious and insensitive directors like IvanHoe (ivan hove) and the overcooked set designers at the Met Opera in the wings. A great singer, interpreter, rare performer like Peter Mattei doesn't need other peoples' "frills." Bravissimo... !

      You know, as a natural born American, I'm ashamed to say that I did not remember that frog's name (thank you). Please, don't say that you're not that cultured, because that frog is certainly an iconic part of American culture. Hell, how many of us were first introduced to opera by those cartoons! And this is coming from a guy who sang in the children's chorus at the Met and was just there two nights ago!
