HAPPY NEW 2016 FOR ALL IN METROPOLITAN OPERA !!! THE BEST !!! BIG THANK YOU FOR THE WONDERFUL VIDEOS !!! BIG THANK YOU FOR THE BIG PLEASURE !!! ALWAYS WITH A LOT OF LOVE AND LIGHT FROM SOFIA - BULGARIA N.Mirkova from Sofia
The first thing when I heard this song is from an Oddbods episode called "Jeff in Traffic" where he was stuck in traffic singing opera. I used to watch Oddbods on Disney Channel in my country when I was a kid. Then I heard it again on Tom and Jerry in "The Cat Above and the Mouse Below". Now I heard this on "Make Mine Music" in the final segment called "The Whale who wanted to Sing at the Met". Thank goodness! This got stuck in my head for years. EDIT 1/2/2024 Beyond its frequent operatic and orchestral performances, the aria has appeared in cartoons and live-action films. The first example of the song appearing in an animated cartoon is Notes to You, released in 1941, where a cat annoys Porky Pig out of his slumber. The most popular examples in animation are The Barber of Seville (a 1944 film with Woody Woodpecker acting as a mischievous barber), the final segment from the 1946 Disney film Make Mine Music, "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met", Long-Haired Hare (1949), Magical Maestro (1952), One Froggy Evening (1955), and The Cat Above and the Mouse Below (1964). In the opening animated sequence by Chuck Jones of Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Robin Williams plays a canary singing the song. Examples in film are For the Love of Mary (1948, by actress/soprano Deanna Durbin),[7] Hopscotch (1980), Oscar (1991), and Luca (2021).[8][9][10] Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Largo_al_factotum#Legacy
Yep. When the long-hairs complain because we make references to cartoons in these comments, I counter by telling them that many people were exposed to classical music through cartoons, or the Three Stooges, so they should appreciate them a little more.
Mattei does an "end run" around the eternal-internal battle between directors and soloists, and that is breath control and the desire to maximise it by minimal movement. Mattei is so fit he can sing upside down and sideways - not that I ever want to see that - but he brings an emotional physicality to his characters - a braggodoccio to Figaro, a menace to one of his Don Giovannis, a poignant sensuality to another, and to the Queen of Sweden a warm and evocative romance, though what was the Prince thinking, having Peter Mattei sing a seductive love song to his wife.... hah! Brave man indeed! IMo he's a super star, but keep ambitious and insensitive directors like IvanHoe (ivan hove) and the overcooked set designers at the Met Opera in the wings. A great singer, interpreter, rare performer like Peter Mattei doesn't need other peoples' "frills." Bravissimo... !

I just ADORE Thomas Hampson as Figaro, he's my all-time favourite. But Peter Mattei is a really cool and modern Figaro, too. He's got swag. xD I like him.
Wagner as well. My introduction to opera was entirely because of "What's Opera, Doc?" (spoofing Wagner's "Ring" cycle) and "Rabbit of Seville," spoofing the Overture to this opera.
Amazing! I hate to admit this, I guess we aren't that cultured here, but this is the first time I've ever heard the whole song. Here in the Southern US, we associate this song with Michigan J. Frog. Absolutely amazing! I'll watch it again.
You know, as a natural born American, I'm ashamed to say that I did not remember that frog's name (thank you). Please, don't say that you're not that cultured, because that frog is certainly an iconic part of American culture. Hell, how many of us were first introduced to opera by those cartoons! And this is coming from a guy who sang in the children's chorus at the Met and was just there two nights ago!
+mikehano I am curious. The actress who throws her head back for the barber to brush her hair, then looks put off when he doesn't- is that Seanie Wade? (Seanie Wade-Warren now) She teaches theater now but was known to travel for plays years ago. It sure looks like her!
I have no idea. If she did not have a singing part, she wouldn't be listed in the cast for that performance, and if she was not in the chorus, she would not be listed in the roster for the company's chorus of that season. Sorry!
This is straight up an opera boast rap. It's a guy bragging on howgreat he s while simultaneously doing enunciative and verbal backflips intended to impress with sheer virtuosity. Brilliant.
This is often called the most difficult baritone aria in opera. Not only the tempo, but the lyrics in Italian come close to being a tongue twister.
I would have thought it’s range would be a factor in its difficulty too, or should a baritone easily be able to sing that high?

There's an Italian in there somewhere... "Mattei???"
EDIT 1/2/2024
Beyond its frequent operatic and orchestral performances, the aria has appeared in cartoons and live-action films. Examples in film are For the Love of Mary (1948, by actress/soprano Deanna Durbin),[7] Hopscotch (1980), Oscar (1991), and Luca (2021).[8][9][10]

❤😊
A great Opera! Music by a Frenchman, Libretto in Italian, Story set in Spain; Truely European...
One of my Favourites.
Original story by a French man, music by an Italian man :)
Immortalised by an American
Music by a Frenchman?
Rossini was Italian!!!
@@Levottomat01 Who is this american?😂
cara Vallati (sei italiana?), Rossini era ITALIANO, non francese...
Eternal thanks to old cartoons.
Yep. When the long-hairs complain because we make references to cartoons in these comments, I counter by telling them that many people were exposed to classical music through cartoons, or the Three Stooges, so they should appreciate them a little more.
Satan's Whore Bugs bunny and Beverly Sills on Johnny Carson did it for me.
And Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire.
@Cave Troll You're*
All hail tex Avery
You right, plus Wozzek, he is amazing in all those completely different personalities
He has a the most beatful lyrics ' voice. O adore him!! 🎶🎶😙
marco modesti bravo bravissimo, Bravo!*
This is my favorite version of this aria. Forget Pandora or anything else, nothing else compares to Peter Mattei's version.
All aspects of this performance are flawless.
Che figata!!! E pure molto bravo. Il lato italiano vien sempre fuori eheheheheheh
Paolo Cecini zitto, Nano!

You probably mean magical maestro
Herrlich ! Gibt sofort gute Laune ! Er ist einfach großartig!
I just ADORE Thomas Hampson as Figaro, he's my all-time favourite.
But Peter Mattei is a really cool and modern Figaro, too. He's got swag. xD
I like him.

Reiner Braun A TE FORTUNA NON MANCHERA! .... aaaaand SCENE! :D
bravo figaro
Looney tunes and Rossini had a very special relationship. They introduce a whole new audience to Opera without even trying.
Count me in
Wagner as well. My introduction to opera was entirely because of "What's Opera, Doc?" (spoofing Wagner's "Ring" cycle) and "Rabbit of Seville," spoofing the Overture to this opera.
Michigan J. Frog in “One Froggy Evening”.
Straordinaria voce e interpretazione grande
Infatti!!
Sorry!
+mikehano No biggie. I just knew her years ago. If that isn't her then she has an identical twin. Thanks bro.
MetOpera, please put this opera on DVD/Blu-ray. Peter Mattei is amazing in this production.
His excellent baritone color makes this so wonderful.
Sei bravissimo!!!
I didn’t stop until I got this version full opera!
😊 done
Magnificent! What a voice!
At this tempo isn't Largo al factotum, it's Allegro al factotum

Absolutely amazing!
This is straight up an opera boast rap. It's a guy bragging on howgreat he s while simultaneously doing enunciative and verbal backflips intended to impress with sheer virtuosity. Brilliant.
Bravissimo. This is so tallented man and actor.
