OMG!!! YOU NAILED IT..... I am a Gospel Pianist who has always had this inclination for Jazz majorly and other styles.... I Can't believe that I spent some bucks buying salsa piano Dvds only to discover that they are no way near this lesson that is less than 20minutes!!! I would appreciate if you come up with your full instructional Dvds covering these and many more concepts I sure will be amongst the first to get them. Thanks again for sharing yoour knowledge with us
You explain this music genre in a very simple and clear way. Even a beginner can learn a lot. I have share this video to my students. They all like you very much.
Hello again, Julian! Last night, I played piano in a hotel lounge. Many people said I have improved a lot. But I was just my old self, I guess. Just more relaxed now and with application of some that i have learned from you. I know that I need to practice what you teach us to get into my system and come out spontaneously. So I will keep on playing these videos and learn each lesson one note at a time. You find a thousand and one people thanking you. Keep me as one constantly saying thank you!!!
Julien sincere thanks for an excellent introduction to Montunos. I have been playing piano for 60+ years and your harmonic introduction was fantastic. This past summer while on holiday in Puerto Rico I took an excellent piano lesson he also introduced me to montunos and 3:2 and 2:3 patterns. You however did not mention the clave patterns. I did find it interesting about the Cuban anticipation on the bass line. I have so much to learn and appreciate your sharing your vast knowledge and hard work, clear teaching and accessible patterns. Sincere thanks and best wishes.
Thank you for these. I'm learning more from these than the classes I'm paying for in college. You're amazing. I'll be sure to make donations. Please keep up the good work.
Chris, This is so nice for me to hear. I'm so glad this one was just right for you. Personally, I love to play the Latin styles too. The rhythms are so interesting. Thanks for the lovely comment!
Nice! Cuba is still on my list, really want to go there for a decent amount of time. My brother lived there for a couple of months, the music is amazing!
Despite being a guitarist,or better said Steel guitar player I found your course (expecially the latin one) = absolutely fantastic Julian!! For my idea of playing the steel it would take me a Teacher like you! Come and live in Switzerland, I will host you. You're WELCOME!!! Best Regards Cat Marino Galli
me too man, I had to pay ten dollars to a guy from venezuela to make a video how to play this kind of montuno, who wouldve thought that i could find a better with 8 chords version, for free lol this is my second 8 chord montuno I learn.
This is excellent. It covers many things that are essential to the montuno style, and it's much helpful to a beginner like myself. Keep up the great work!
I was finally able to perform it correctly on my guitar. Thank you so much. I am a guitar player, but follow your videos nad they have helped me tremendously.
Marino! Thanks so much for the lovely comment - I'm so pleased to hear this helped you, and I'll let you know if I'm in Switzerland! I once went to Murren (near Interlaken I think) and loved it there. Best wishes, Julian
So glad to hear this Paul! Really pleased this one helped you :) And thanks for the suggestion - I want to cover more on this subject. Also check out one of my older videos on Latin Montunos (just take out the spaces to this link): youtube . com/watch?v=i16aXgF1TNc
You're very welcome Jonas, I'm so happy to hear you're applying these techniques to your public playing, and people are noticing! Thanks so much for the lovely comment!
I thought you had to be born in Cuba to really understand this music. Somehow you do! Excellent lesson, excellent teacher, excellent presentations. I will subscribe, thanks again.
Thank you . I always enjoy your videos. They are very useful and informative. it would have helped, if you would have played it over a metronome and or over the clave cubana.( even a sequence of a whole salsa rhythms section would have been great )
Wow. Secret sauce! I see you are going with 1235 on the right hand for all chords. Wouldn´t it be more convenient to use 1245 for the first two and last two chords of the cycle? Or would that be too much fidget?
what a great course!, I am so pleased and now I can see that I need to learn more, the piano is a wonderful world, thanks because you are sharing us these courses, go ahead i ask you please, and I hope to play the piano like you :)
I noticed, when it comes to that bassline, so many lesson videos don't tell that the very first note of the bassline is ON cue to get you started, the notes after that are indeed pulled back one 16th note. To overcome the first note on cue, best (and musically) is to omit that note, leave it open and start directly with the pulled back 2nd note.. there you go

Great lesson. Some sheet music notation of the rhythms would be helpful for us classical musicians trying to branch out into latin and jazz. But very informative video. Keep up the good work.
Hey there I really appreciate that lesson I have a tutorial on passing chords of which I would say that was at least 95% your creation..... it means a lot to me
