Great points you made here. I was really considering this lens because of the price but I found a middle ground of almost "GM quality" from the new Sigma Art 85mm 1.4 DG DN (Ordering mine this week)
Nice, that lens will probably be great, Sigma is good at that almost GM quality lenses
The 85mm f/1.8 is really loved by a lot of Sony shooters because of the price and quality for that price (me included) but I have to agree with your points. The minimum focus is really starting to bother me as I make more TH-cam videos and film more weddings and the chromatic aberration is a lot worse compared to my other lenses. Just waiting for the 85mm GM II to come out in a few months and then I can finally retire this guy. Great video man!
Totally fair. When I was first getting into the Sony ecosystem, I wanted the 85mm GM but according to pretty much everyone, it's just not really all that much better than anything else, and apparently it's older than this one. An 85mm GMII would be a very welcome addition I think
So what should be the replacement, maintaining the 67mm filter size ? No way I'd buy a complete set of wider filters ! 20mm 1.8 G, 35mm 1.4 G, 50mm 1.4 GM.... all 67mm.

@@itmeremy The point is: I'm trying to replace the old 85mm 1.8 because of its shortcomings but with its 67mm filter thread size in mind. All my ND, cpl and mist filters are 67mm because Sony pushed this size in their GM primes lineup. So what is the upgrade in the 85mm range ? Anyone ?
@dergelenkspreizer5272 ok, I see. I don't know the filter diameters of all the handful of E mount 85mm lenses. I guess that's the downside to getting smaller filters, they won't work on bigger lenses, but bigger filters will work on smaller lenses with a step up ring
@@itmeremy That's the problem. Sony doesn't come up with an updated 85mm G lense. Even 3rd party 85's are wider. There is a blind spot now in the lineup
@dergelenkspreizer5272 I agree that they are definitely due for an update to the 85mm, especially the GM
