The reason why there is a discrepancy in what the Berliner is called comes from the use of the term Pfannkuchen in German.
Outside of Berlin's local vernacular, it denotes a pancake similar to what one would commonly associate with the term.
Now, as in Berlin the term denotes this jelly donut, it was technically referred to as a Berliner Pfannkuchen, a Berlin-style pancake everywhere else. Due to the inordinate length, the term Pfannkuchen was then dropped over time, getting to the Berliner name.
Thanks so much for taking the time to elaborate on the history of the Berliner Björn Czaia! It's so interesting! We hope you enjoyed this video- we loved the food hunting in Berlin- we ate well! Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
Hy Thomas & Sheena, I just got back from Malaysia and Thanks a ton for your reference videos. Had really good time there. Also I would like to request you to see the following video from the food ranger vlogger Trevor who recently visited Dhaka and another city of Bangladesh, Chittagong. You'll find the vibrant taste and texture of Bangladeshi cuisine here in this video. Hope to welcome you people someday soon in Dhaka and see your own made videos about our cuisine :)

Hi guys
The Curry Wurst location is a true insider tip and really worth to have it there. Also not that known among the Berlin citizens. I was really surprised to see it. Just wondering how you found that spot.
Unfortunately the Döner you had is not typical Turkish. With all the different spices it has a Arabic influence and is almost Shawarma. Nevertheless this one is definitely one of the best.
@@hakansoylu6899 thanks for your message mate. We're so glad you enjoyed this video and thought the spots we picked were good ones! We do a lot of research prior to filming our videos- we aim to show true local favourites as that's where we like to eat when we travel 😄 The döner was so different to the ones we ate in Istanbul (where we were prior to Berlin) th-cam.com/video/Bh48XGwxYHc/w-d-xo.html- but both were just as tasty we thought. Hope you enjoy the rest of the content on our channel- thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena
That's a weird currywurst. A real currywurst comes sliced.
😆 didn’t affect the taste luckily! It was such a delicious one- we ate many around Berlin to compare 😝 thanks for watching and commenting- hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate , its true, a real Currywurst comes in small slices, there are machines to do that job in most of those places. Sliced, it also absorbs the sauce and spices a lot better. But there is a very colourful lot of Currywurst philosophers in Germany with all sorts of claims and opinions such as where it was invented and by whom and how its made from what? Same as the argument over the pavlova downunder!
Yes
Not at Krasselt's!!! It's famous for it for decades!
True that!
das ist keine currywurst das ist eine misshandelte wurst :-)
😂😂😂😂😂😂 you made us laugh X_Bumsgewiter_X. It was tasty though! Thanks for watching and commenting- hope you enjoyed this one and like the rest of our Berlin series. Cheers, Sheena
Diese winzige 3,5 qm-Currybude am Steglitzer Damm verkauft hunderte Würste jeden Tag und das seit inzwischen Jahrzehnten. Da scheint also jemand was richtig zu machen.
is so
war so
bleibt so
Ist halt wirklich so
Who Rain Zone so is dat
@@ChasingaPlate I guess it was more because of the extreme amount of sauce :D The Currywurst was completely drenched in sauce, there was literally twice as much sauce as there was sausage :D And I've also never seen a Currywurst on a stick. It looked really weird for me, but the taste was obviously good as I could tell from your reactions :)
Yes, Döner is hard to eat because it's so big :D But here in the Ruhr area, we usually get thicker bread (which is probably my favourite part about it) and even more fillings :D The bread you had appears to be in a triangular shape. Usually it has a round-ish shape, so the filling don't fall out that easily.
And yes, I enjoyed your video a lot :) I hope you visit other parts of Germany soon :)
Nutzername92a hahaha it was SO drenched in sauce 🤣 we are both sauce fiends so that suited us 😄 so interesting hearing about regional variations like the different shaped bread! This one was indeed triangle and yes the filling spilled out a little 😝 So happy you enjoyed this video- hope you like the final Berlin video we have coming up soon! Cheers, Sheena
du solltest die currywurst mal probieren ;) in meinen augen die beste in berlin :)
@@ChasingaPlate you will find unnumbered varieties of Doener. Every store has their own type of sauce, then there is greek-style, chicken, lamb, selfmade bread and so on.
Same with Curry-Wurst.
In the other video you had Eisbein, which is served different in southern germany and is called "Haxn". Then there is green cabage in the north, which is mostly served during winter. If you really want to go through all the local german dishes, you should calculate four to six weeks just to get a glimpse.
And the Berliner is what made me fall in love with jelly filled donuts as a child. I miss Germany.
😍 those Berliners are dang tasty! It’s a neat place- we loved our time there. Hope you are able to get back there for a visit one day soon mate. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
You can see that the Döner-meat is of good quality, because you can still see the different layers. That means it is hand made (stacked) and not minced meat (which can have many additives) but actual slices of beef.
Great spotting solokom and such awesome information! The minced meat döner look and taste terrible in comparison don’t they?! We ate an amazing döner kebab in our recent Istanbul series too. Thanks for watching and commenting and we hope you enjoy the rest of our Berlin series! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate being born in Berlin, living of Döner in all its beautiful varieties for many years, noticing stuff like this is a given. ;) and since I`m living abroad now where a good Döner can`t be found I a 500 miles radius, I really enjoy you little berlin series. I would kill for a good Döner and a Pfannkuchen now! Thanks for making me homesick you Flitzpiepen! :D
😆😆😆😆😆😆 we're so cruel! Hope you enjoy eating vicariously through our last Berlin video which is coming up soon even though it'll make you homesick 😝 Thanks for watching solokom! Cheers, Sheena
that's true! you can find a lot of those cheap döners because it is soooo popular here. Have to keep your eye open for those excelent ones like we saw in this video hmmmm tasty
@@Magerquark omg it was sooooo tasty! Thanks for watching and commenting mate hope you enjoyed this video. Cheers, Sheena
Once again, a lovely experience! You two are so good at adding another dimension to our visual experience by adding that "real feel" to the food with your descriptions of the texture & flavor, which is spot on! Having tasted these foods, its so easy to remember how they tasted! Thanks for that delightful walk down memory lane! Keep enjoying & bringing us more "foodventures" 👍😀💗
Hi Artil Denram, awww yay it makes us to happy to hear that! It’s genuinely awesome to be able to bring you guys along on our “foodventures” 😄 thanks for watching and commenting and hope you enjoy the rest of the series mate. Have a great week ahead. Cheers, Sheena
The way the Döner man talked to you is so stereotypical for the Döner venders. They tend to crack jokes and start a conversation. I love it
Very hospitable and welcoming! Thanks for watching and commenting Annette. Hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sheena
0:42 - Eating burgers in an old public toilet? Sign me up, that sounds delicious!
😂😂😂😂😂 thought that might get people going P//MBECH. Not your usual location but it didn't affect the quality and taste of the food luckily. Thanks for watching and commenting. Hope you enjoyed this video. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate Haha yes I liked it. Thanks, I was just joking around in my previous comment ;-)

Thanks so much mate! Hope you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching! Could do with some currywurst right about now! Cheers, Sheena
I really like that you step outside the usual tourist paths in your videos. And i got so hungry while watching this!
Thanks so much Norbert Blackrain 😄 we’re all about eating local wherever we travel. Oh gosh thinking about this day is making me crave currywurst! Thanks for watching and commenting and we hope you enjoy the rest of the content on our channel! Cheers, Sheena
Hi Sheena and Thomas, great video. Thanks for sharing with us. Foods look awesome.
Hi Jacinta, thanks so much for watching! We’re so glad you enjoyed this one. I fell in love with the currywurst in Berlin- couldn’t get enough of them. Have a great week 😄Cheers, Thomas
I really love how you tell us the history of the food that you are eating. I find it really fascinating. I never used to be a big meat person but I'm obsessed with the stack of meat and how they shave it off in small amounts for the kebabs. You do a lot of research into where to eat where the locals eat which is often more authentic as it's not aimed at the taste buds of the average traveller. The research, filming, editing and then you reply to so many messages takes a long time but I want you to know that I see all of your love and time in your videos. Thank you for sharing all of this with us, it's really special. I hope that you are both enjoying time with family and friends. Xx
What a beautiful comment! Thanks so much Amy 😍 we’re so appreciative of our community cos you guys totally get us! So pleased to know that our research and effort to hunt down local spots is valued 😄 How impressive is the doner?! The thin slices of beef would be right up your alley I reckon! We had fun filming in Berlin 🤗 So, so loving being back in NZ for a bit mate- getting to spend time with family is awesome. Hope you are doing good 😘 Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate you guessed right I tend to love shredded meat like pulled pork or pulled chicken. I cooked and ate pulled pork for the first time about 6 months ago and I'm now just cooking it to put in the freezer so I can have it anytime. I never used to like meat apart from chicken but now I'm enjoying meat. I think it's because I'm low in some proteins and I've had to have albumin infusions. I'm doing okay, I try to stay positive but sometimes it's hard when I'm in so much pain. Anyway I'm so pleased that you are taking the time to stop, relax and spend time with family and friends. All of these things are important, especially spending time with loved ones. Xx
Yuuuuuum pulled pork!!! So good in tacos! We can totally appreciate how damn hard it must be to stay positive when you are struggling. Good on you for striving to maintain that positive mentality- it's so important, especially when it comes to health and getting from one day to the next. Cheers, Sheena xxx

Congratulations on your regular piece in the NZ Herald..... How exciting you deserve recognition in your own country.... You guys deserve it because you represent world food in all different countries, and only show the best of a destination, always focusing on the positive. That is what we want to see and what the newspaper wants to print. I love your videos including this one and can't wait to travel again and eat as you guys do..... It will not be Berlin for me but, you keep me inspired and I will catch up with you somewhere at sometime for a beer and a good feed.
Hi OBIE!

Cheers, Thomas 😀
As someone else already said, the spots you guys picked were really good! The Currywurst you ate is unusual but very popular in Berlin. Been there as well even though I live quite far away from it. Also going to Neukölln was a good idea for eating Döner. One of the first videos on youtube where not only the most touristy spots are represented!
Hi Truthishere! Thanks much for your lovely message! It always makes us happy when locals think we’ve hit the right spots- we always try and show tasty local spots in all our videos. We loved our time in Berlin. Hope we can return soon! Thanks for watching and commenting 😀 Cheers, Sheena

Classic shop from 1906 - that is awesome! Great that the jams are fresh and not overly sweet
Love finding the shops with long histories!! I’ve just been reading about the difference between jams, jellies, fruit butters and preserves in America. Mind blown 😝 we just lump them all in as jam!
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena Absolutely! Always a reason those spots have been in business for so long
Too right! 😀😋
1906 is actually not all that old. there actually is a wineyard in germany that has been arround since 862
yes, but Berlin is a surprisingly young city. So not that much really old stuff as it can be found otherwhere in Germany.

Without question, Chasing A Plate is THE BEST food vlog on TH-cam. Skillfully able to articulate food flavors and textures, they bring to life their eating experiences through words and comparisons like no other vloggers can do. There is little doubt that these folks are super-tasters because their descriptions are so artfully detailed and complete. Combined with relevant and interesting background context, thoughtful video captures and superb editing, this vlog surpasses all others. I could taste the currywurst and doner kebab descriptions, loved the contrast on Turkish doner as well as the info surrounding "ich bin ein Berliner" and, above all, that gob-smacking dog at the start !

as a Turk living in germany i must admit, that Döner in Germany tastes much better than in Turkey because in Germany they put special yoghurt sauce and in Turkey not. That special yoghurt sauces make such huuuuge difference.
I order my Döner always with double yoghurt sauce
Hi Shockwelle1, it’s so interesting to get a Turk’s view on this! The two versions are so different aren’t they? We ate this döner in Istanbul recently: th-cam.com/video/Bh48XGwxYHc/w-d-xo.html it was utterly delicious but we’ve gotta say- the yoghurt sauce is sooooo good and such a great addition! Hope you enjoyed this video and also like our Istanbul series 😄 Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena
I agree with you. I am an Turk living in the Netherlands. I like "dutch döner" way more than in Turkey cause of the garlic sauce. And you get alot more meat.
I only like Döner with cocktail sauce.
Im turkish live in Germany and Döner is in turkey much much better then in Europe
LOL I am a Turkish living in Turkey, I also lived in Germany for a year. Nobody in Turkey adds youghurt sauce but it makes them delicious. I didn’t like the meat in Europe, it was like plastic, maybe it was because of cheap döner restaurants that I visited. Prag’s döner was good. Döner meat in Turkey is more tasty, salty and oily. 😍
That doner kebab is a killer Sheena! Couple with the jam doughnut and a chocolate milkshake, Im good to go the whole day....

The bread looks excellent on that doner - two types of sesame seeds and looks like it was pressed
It was excellent guys! Crispy, chewy and the perfect accompaniment to the meat and vege 😍 I want one now!! Bet you can find some delicious doner in NYC! Cheers, Sheena
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena Yum! Not exactly like this, but definitely some tasty spit roasted meats here
@Food and Footprints: DÖNER, as well as turkish as german!!! I personnaly prefer the greek 'γύρος' (Gyros in german) which tastes way better!
Sesame & black Caraway ;) Sometimes it looks like black Sesame, but its not.
German foods looks great here, love it! 😉
Us too Jade!! It was a great day of eating! Omg that currywurst 😍😍😍😍 thanks for watching and commenting mate and cheers for tuning into the live chat the other day!! 😄 Cheers, Sheena

Aw thanks so much Elias 222! So glad you are enjoying our content! This was such a delicious food hunting day. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena 😄
Berliner are my absolute favorite donut, so light but yeasty taste. One of the supermarkets here actually sell the Berliner and there pretty good to!
That Burger stand definitely goes into the "dodgy" 🤣street food categorie!! Must be worthwhile "dodging" the traffic to get to!! This series has got it all.👍
Oh gosh how good are they?! 🤤 loved the tart jam in this one. Hahaha that was a great burger stand- classic! Thanks for watching and commenting Brilliant But Blue, hope you’re enjoying this one. Cheers, Sheena
“It’s an easy drinking beer”, is there any other kind?🤣 Seriously though, when “new” food becomes classic, it’s got to be good. I so want a currywurst now. 🌭
🤣🤣🤣🤣 you make a fair point Jennifer! Oh gosh- we could wolf down a couple of currywurst and a few beers right about now too! Thanks for watching and commenting on this video- hope you liked it! 😄 Cheers, Sheena
The Endless Adventurers sent me, I enjoyed this ! 😎
Hi Fran Stains! Thanks so much for popping over and checking out our channel- we're so glad you enjoyed this video 😍 We had such a brilliant time with Eric & Allison- lots of laughs and awesome sharing a bit of Kiwi culture with them. Hope you enjoy what we have coming up on the channel and thanks for taking the time to say hi! Cheers, Sheena
Nice videos from Berlin! Very good investigation, no tourist-food. You made everything right! The kind of eating Currywurst was a little different, but that's typical for Krasselts. And the Döner was good as well, that was a good one without minced meat on the spit. Burgermeister is definitely my favorite burger in Berlin and Siebert is on my bucket list since months. On Sundays, there is a very long waiting line for buns :)
Greetings from Berlin-Wedding
Hi Aluminiumhut1337, thanks so much for your lovely comment. We love hearing from people who appreciate what we do! We always try and show delicious local spots so it's awesome to get a local's feedback that we hit the right spots! Oh gosh- we wanted to eat everything in Siebert! Hope you get a taste of those buns soon. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. Hope you like what we have coming up on the channel! Cheers, Sheena
so glad to see you made the effort to go to krasselts, which is often overlooked. a truly a local place and for me the best currywurst in berlin.
Hi captain subtext. So are we! 😀 It was so worth the trip out there and hands down was the best currywurst we had while in Berlin. We'd go back in a heartbeat. Thanks very much for watching this video and we hope you enjoyed it! Cheers, Thomas 😀
Das ist gut
We totally agree PAK TV 😄😄😄 we ate so well in Berlin. Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoy the rest of our Berlin series. Cheers, Sheena
For those of us who have not traveled to Germany it would be nice if you mentioned the prices of the various foods.

For the best beer in the world, just visit Bavaria. Especially the region Upper Franconia. The region with the highest brewery density in the world! ;-)
We are so desperate to get to Bavaria 😍definitely on the list for next time mate! Thanks for watching and commenting- hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena
A Berliner has many different names. In my Region we mostly call it ''Kreppel'' and im from Frankfurt :D

Ehrenmann weis wie man die dinger nennt
Loved it!! Currywurst always sounds like a snack someone would fix themselves at 2 am after coming home from a wild party and I love that it actually became a thing in Germany, haha .D

I'm loving your videos at the moment and i have subscribed to your channel finally. I'm looking forward to your NZ and Australian food videos in the near future. With the German food theme, you should travel to Adelaide in South Australia (my hometown) to try the German food in Hahndorf (Adelaide Hills area) to compare? South Australia has a lot of German heritage. Looking forward to your next food adventures!
Hi J&M World Travellers, brilliant to hear, thanks so much! We were just talking about Adelaide the other day- a place we’d love to get to! We’re super excited about getting into filming our NZ series- we’ve just finalised a road trip to the South Island so it’s all on! Thanks for watching and hope you like what we have coming up! Cheers, Sheena
When you were telling the story about "I am a Berliner", I was reminded of Eddie Izzard Dress to Kill.. it's very funny.
As always, love the vids !!
😆😆😆 haven’t watched him for years will have to get back into it! So glad you enjoyed this one Kamae Daemon, thanks for your kind words and for watching! Cheers, Sheena
Wer is alles deutsch?☝️
Hi guys! Just came here through " Endless Aventure" and really enjoying it!! Abraços (Hugs) from Brasilia, Brazil!
Hi Luiz Gustavo Lima! Wow, Brazil! So glad you enjoyed this video, thanks for watching and for taking the time to say hi! Cheers, Sheena
Hi guys thanks for another great vid. There is NOTHING like a good home style burger. It beats the chain burger joints hands down. Chase that with a good donut and id be in heaven.
Totally agree Kellie! It totally hit the spot 😄 I wouldn’t have minded that donut with custard in it either 😆 so glad you enjoyed this one- thanks for watching and commenting mate! Cheers, Sheena
Are you guys really commenting every comment? I respect that!
Hi! Yep we really enjoying getting to chat with our subscribers via the comment section. We appreciate and love reading all the comments. Thanks so much for watching this one! Cheers, Thomas 😀
Me as a guy born and raised in Berlin, I can say that I eat Döner once a week but Currywurst maybe once in a year :,)...
But wow you liked the Berliner Kindl Beer ? I hate it ! There are so much more beers like Heineken (i know its not from Germany) Paulaner or Bitburger wich are waaaay better!
😄😄😄😄 I guess it’s one of those dishes- sort of like with Kiwis and pies and fish and chips. They’re iconic dishes but not everyday types of food. Delicious nonetheless though! The döner in Berlin are great! Packed with filling! Hahaha I think a beer tour of Germany should totally be on our next itinerary when we return- just so we can be sure of which beers we love the most 😉 thanks for watching and commenting- hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers, Sheena
Berliner Kindl isn't that bad. Paulaner is allright. But Heineken? And don't even start on Bitburger, why would you drink that?! It's the worst beer I've ever had. And I had real bad beers.
The Beauty about German beer is NOT brands. If someone from the other side of the country knows the beer you drink, you've propably had the wrong brand. Buy local beers! Best beers I've ever had where the ones, that nobody outside the region would ever know. This is also what I do, when I go somewhere in Germany I haven't been before. If I want a drink, I'll just grab a random Bottle and see how it turns out.
If you're in germany and drinking Heineken, you're not living life to your full potential.
Hi guys
Can’t wait for new videos!
Hoping you are ok after the recent tragic events in your country.
Continued safe travels
Hi Terese, thanks so much for your message. There is definitely a dark cloud over New Zealand- what has happened to our Muslim community is horrific and abhorrent 😔 Thanks for your patience on the new videos front! They'll be back soon for sure!! Cheers, Sheena
That bread that they use for kebabs in Berlin is incredible!!! We have Halloumi ones when we are there😋 very addictive👍
Mmmmmm they sound great guys!! The bread was fantastic right?! We loved the texture of it! Hope you enjoyed this video you two, thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena
There is still a discussion about "Was the Curry Sausage invented in Berln or at the Ruhr Area" and which is the better one.
In Germany Berlin is sometimes like the USA - Everything good was invented by them, everything not so good by others :-)
The Döner Kebab (proofed invention from a turkish restaurant owner in Berlin) is a germanized variation of turkisch Kebab. In turkey the meat , salad, sauce and bread are traditionaly served on a plate side by side. to make this eatable when walking the restaurant owner but all the food inside the sliced bread.
Hi DSP16569, hahahahaha it's like that in many places we reckon! The Döner Kebab was very different to what we were eating in Istanbul- we actually just finished filming our Istanbul series before Berlin so it was great to see the difference and how the dish has morphed! th-cam.com/video/Bh48XGwxYHc/w-d-xo.html Hope you enjoyed this video and like the rest of our Berlin series. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate I saw an interview with the turkish inventor of the Döner Kebab. He said, that his turkish restaurant was pretty empty, because all these damn germans were soo busy during lunch-time. Just running around and eating while running. So he took everything from the plate and put it into a kind of bread roll. And our #1 fast food was born. In the meantime you find this german kind of döner in Turkey, too.
Hi Frank Neugebauer, brilliant information mate, thank you! You gotta adapt to local culture right? This is such a great example of it! Hope you enjoyed this video, thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
