    So.... who'd be up for eating bull's testicles and/or horse? Let us know in the comments below! 😆

      Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena You know we are!! Had horse in Sicily a few years back - good stuff!

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can always count on you guys! How did the horse come in Sicily?

    • @FoodandFootprints
      @FoodandFootprints 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena Had it grilled with some lemon squeezed on top. It was thin sliced and lean but cooked nicely. Enjoyed the unique flavor and went well with red wine! This block in Catania had a few places offering horse

      My first experience with horse meat wasn't the greatest...we were in a little cafe in Paris and the owners kept insisting it was beef. With my first bite I knew it wasn't beef...it was sweeter than beef, very stringy and had a gaminess to it. Had they been honest about what they were serving I probably would have liked it.
      Haven't had bull testicles yet...one of these days. Here in the western USA they are frequently called "Rocky Mountain Oysters!"

    • @keithmasumoto9698
      @keithmasumoto9698 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely! Those were very nicely prepared. Thomas's description makes the testis sound like sweetbreads, delish. And the horse appears to be a secco treatment , better than the raw Japanese basashi ! But that tongue sandwich, oh my!

    Thanks from the deep of my heart for having given me the chance of doing this wonderful trip in the city I was born in and whom I'm missing so much, after almost 4 years in Japan completely alone. Had to hold the tears back 🙂

      Never confuse Olive Garden with Italian food. It is Americanized food to please the average American palate of people who grew up on Chef Boyardee.

    My bf and I went to the last restaurant...it was fantastic!!! He was a bit taken aback at the “no menu” thing but what they brought us was delicious and priced very well. It’s a bit off the beaten path but absolutely worth it! I had the carbonara and he had a tomato based pasta with two sticks of liver at the end! Thank you for the recommendation!!

    Thomas and Sheena a perfect video. That beef sandwich is calling my name, Expresso and pastry done, loved that pizza modernization (adding old standards sweet touch) but your last restaurant food choices were sublime. Because of you and this video, we're taking a train to Rome on Friday. You need to contact tourism boards in the countries you visit. Fantastic video. Thank you.

And Sheena, I hope you 'll get a sponsorship of some sort from THAT lipstick brand cuz boy owh boy, the lipsticks were still intact no smudge at all even after you took a big bite, everytime!! Every time your teeth crunched through those bready crusts, it woke up my appetite! I'm a huge fan of nose-to-tail eating, like you, Sheena! Unfortunately, especially in the US, it's getting hard to even find offal meats, and the preparation of them is becoming a lost art. I've tried beef and pork testicles, and both are good *IF* properly prepared.. The horse meat you had looked like it might have been salt-cured or dried, to be that stringy. Sort of like Asian pork floss. Pasta....you can never go wrong with pasta! Awesome Rome series, guys.

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi MsKestrela! Thanks for watching and commenting 😍 Ahhh yes Asian pork floss is the perfect thing to liken that horse to! How were the beef and pork testicles that you tried prepared? It was pretty neat to be at a restaurant with such a wide range of offal dishes- bet you would have loved it! I'd be super keen to hunt down some more quinto quarto restaurants the next time we're in Rome! Omg the crunch on the bread 😂- my mouth is watering just thinking about it!! Hope you're having a great week MsKestrela! Cheers, Sheena

      @@ChasingaPlate I had the testicles at a "Rocky Mountain Oyster roast" (euphemism for testicles here in the US), but they weren't roasted, they were sliced, breaded, and deep fried. Crunchy on the outside, creamy-chewy on the inside. SO good! It cracks me up when people cringe at eating things like intestines, but love sausages....not knowing that sausage casings, usually, are the small intestine of the critter the meat came from. As always, thanks for your reply, Sheena!

    *_Mordi e Vai_* - Everyone's go-to spot but I skipped for some reason. 😐 A super popular sandwich in the U.S. is called ... "Italian Beef." Ha! Yup. The roll is either dipped like you filmed or the entire sandwich is completely dunked! in the jus. Brought to Chicago a century ago by Italian immigrants but available all across the country. Delicious.
    *_Trapizzino_* - They came to NYC with a ton of fanfare. Never had much interest personally but as with the Sushirrito (sushi burrito) and Cronut (croissant donut), I'm sure a Trapizzino style pizza sandwich will become ubiquitous soon enough. 😀
    *_Betto e Mary_* - The bull testicles I've had were not as battered as these; sliced thinner, flour dusted only, fried and served with sauces. Quite tasty and should be more common but still treated as a novelty by the general public.
    *_Really fun food day, guys!_* Looks like you got to know Testaccio. Is that where you stayed?

    • @ChasingaPlate
      @ChasingaPlate  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tosh, hahaha Italian beef. That sounds epic. When you're next back in Rome you must try and get to Mordi e Vai- it really was a special sandwich. The trapizzino took us by surprise- it's not something we'd usually be into either but we kept hearing such great things and we liked the idea of the traditional dishes used as fillings so we thought we'd take a punt. It was totally worth it! The bull testicles you had sound great- would love to try them that way. We were actually staying in an area called Monteverde- it was fabulous- a little way out of the centre but that didn't bother us. Great energy and a local market two minutes walk up the road. We did spend a bit of time around Testaccio and Trastavere though- loved walking through those areas. Ahhhh Rome- can't wait to return! Thanks for watching this one Tosh, so glad you enjoyed it! Cheers, Sheena

      Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to modern, new, fusion, molecular, you name it and even dishes that start out "gimmicky" can become a favorite. I bet you and Thomas never saw *_"Carne Asada Fries"_* in Mexico, eh? Invented in southern California it's chopped carne asada, guacamole, cheese and sour cream piled on top of a mound of fries. Delicious comfort food. Relatively new, it's all over the U.S. west but can be found across the country. So, I'm not disrespecting Trapizzino but as Thomas mentioned in the vid, there's always initial trepidation. 😀
