    Vas' death wasn't what the problem was it's the fact that they used the "hidden bad guy" trope the thing is they introduced what's his name horribly, the story didn't hide hints of him being there, he wasn't given the same personal connection Vas had the only thing this dude had was a big army which guess what Vas had that too.

      Yeah I agree Vaas is the memorable one out of all the "bad guys" in FarCry3. Hoyt is pretty much very forgettable standing in 3rd IMO with Vass 1st and Buck 2nd.
      I still play it now on PC (even though it seems to crash more than Skyrim does) and hearing Vaas' lines about how his sister forces him into making a choice "them or me" only to find she does the same thing to us after we rescue all our remaining friends.
      FarCry3 feels like it ends after we kill Vaas & the rest of the game is tacked on to give it longer playtime.

    Regarding the Mary Jane thing, here's a note to all devs lol - No one wants sections like that, just don't do them. Not wanting MJ to be a damsel in distress is all well and good, MJ is a badass for sure, but make her a badass in a cutscene.

    Forced stealth sections in games can be a good thing if they’re done well. Mech assault 2 did a good job of it because it gave you a tense situation where you had no way to directly fight back until you could find a vacant mech, and in the meantime you have to either sneak around them, slowly dwindle them down with explosives, or topple a building to take out a mech in one go. It was a nice change of pace. Also these sections weren’t dragged out, and didn’t span entire levels. There was only 2 or 3 mandatory stealth sections and they were only small sections in levels if I remember correctly. Other than that the game only recommended stealth in some areas, and did not force your hand in it outside of the 2-3 areas.

    8:58. See, I always imagined the original ME3 ending as making a kind of sense...that the Reapers were such an enormous, overpowering threat that all our little choices that we thought were so important just meant nothing in the face of an enemy so damn big. And so in the end we have no choice....the threat of the Reapers is so big that we just have no choice in confronting it, but Sheppard tried to convince themselves otherwise.
    That having been said, the expanded ending is absolutely better, no question.

    I mean, no, that ending to Mass Effect 3 would have been even more loathed, as seen by the fact that part of the expanded endings needed to make it clear that the relays _weren't_ destroyed and the races _weren't_ cut off from each other because people hated the implication that was what had happened in the original version of the ending so much.
    The rumored other ending that people were upset about not getting was the one where something something dark matter. (I don't remember the details too much since I didn't find 'It was brought up during Tali's recruitment mission!' to actually be any more meaningfully foreshadowing than the BS we actually got.)

    You know the theme I kept hearing? "Not enough time." Game after game was damaged, even ruined, because they didn't get the time they needed to do it right. Just imagine how much studios would make if they allowed developers the time they needed to make a game a fully finished product. CyberPunk 2077 has managed to be a financial success (I think), but if they had spent the time to finish it, it might have shattered records. We might have gotten fans demanding Mass Effect 4. Deus Ex might have seen a massive resurgence. On and on it goes. But greed and impatience cost them those chances. Ironic since they'd have gotten what they wanted and more, had they just taken the time to do it right.

    The thing that got me about Mary Jane's stealth missions was the weak distraction mechanic they gave her. Peter had the superpowers to help him. Miles had the phone app that let him make electronics malfunction. Pretty cool gimmick for an unpowered character. But Mary Jane had to rely on risky environmental junk like knocking toolboxes over. If we could have done something like blinding guards with her camera flash, then cool. But what they did was a little too realism over fun.

    I know this sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I always had the feeling those "leaks" were done in purpose, so Walters and Hudson could be like "Ah, darn! Our great story... daaaamit. Now we have to make a different story"
    Since Walters became co-lead writer the story of ME got worse and worse and he loved to retcon and change existing lore and events of ME(1) (no wonder Drew left)
    I mean: Walters and Hudson came up with the ending we know. And no matter if EC or not EC this story for the ending is BS. Sahem that two people wrote an ending for a story so many people worked on...

  • @tyrannicpuppy
    @tyrannicpuppy ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Personally I didn't mind the 'end' of ME3 because I took the entire game as the end of a trilogy. You jet all over the galaxy closing plot threads from the earlier games one by one until you bring that army to bear on the enemy above Earth. Sure, it could have been better executed, but all of ME3 itself was the ending.
    Having said that, I don't understand this need to change a property because someone leaked something. Tech specs for phones and stuff are leaked way in advance all the time, and it never lessens the demand for them at launch. In fact, it often boosts hype for the thing. I write fanfics and reviewers guess where I'm going to take the story all the time. Sure, loads of them get it wrong too, but they still come back and read that next chapter when I post it. Just because we might know the bones of a thing does not mean the execution won't still be worth our time to play out.
    Mass effect had already dispensed with the mystery aspects. We all knew that ME3 was the confrontation with the Reapers. Knowing the ending wouldn't have changed that. Because the ending of a battle is still a battle we would have had to fight. And it would have been just that little bit unique for everyone because we all played a little differently depending on our class and loadout and our preferred companions.
    Stick with your plans and release it anyway. Let your work speak for itself instead of rushing to alter something days out from launch. Especially if you work under EA. I would have gleefully played out that ending to ME3 knowing what it was in advance. Even more if I knew going in that it would surely lead to an ME4.

      @andrewclark8989 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or just avoid story spoilers. You can practically always find out what the ending of any game, film or book is in advance if you want. They're available almost as soon as it takes for the first people to finish. It's usually no problem to avoid if you don't go looking for it, unless someone blurts it out without warning, which is universally considered a dick move. It makes no sense at all to change an ending because of leaks, as the people who don't want to know the ending probably won't be clicking on articles titled "Mass Effect 3 Ending Revealed"

If you want good stealth sections look at batman arkham servies he can get caught but the game doesnt fail, rather he gets shot until he dies or finds a hiding spot. The game tells the players they need to try harder if they want batman to stay alive, instead of reseting them for minor mistakes that will make a controller take flight.

    What is it with video games and horrendous endings? Even in many of today's movies, the endings suck. They used to be handled so well, I mean look at MGS1 on PS1. It used to be a giant payoff. Nowadays, you get to the end and you can tell they didn't know what to do... how hard can it really be to throw some intelligent twists into things? If you're burnt out, get a third party to help with a fresh idea.

    Pretty much goes without saying, 80% of bad video game moments, or bad games overall, come from the crunch put on to crank the final product out in time for marketing hypes, whether it be for Christmas, Black Friday, school holiday seasons, what have you. Deadlines put dead ends in video game quality.

    I hate it when developers allow a leak to shift the entirety of a game's ending. Shifting the entire thing just to throw off any plot points ruined by leaks is just stupid. Hell, add a joke ending or something, but don't throw away a perfectly good ending just because of a leak.

    People are not complaining about the correct parts of the Goldeneye port. The control scheme for the switch is almost unplayable. How hard would it have been to map the buttons to the normal shooter controls. The textures, sounds and fps are all authentic to the original game, only an idiot would expect them to be anything but dated. The controls however had to be remapped off the N64 remote and they chose the worst control scheme in history for the switch.

    HSWWSH Seriously, as an 80's kid, my favorite 2600 games were Indiana Jones, Yar's Revenge (I have the cover tattooed on my arm) and I also played the hell out of ET. It wasn't until years later that I found they were all made by the same dude. For all the flak ET gets, it wasn't THAT bad as far as Atari 2600 games go. They just overestimated the sales figures. Drastically.

  • @XanderVJ
    @XanderVJ ปีที่แล้ว

    As good as his Spider-Man films were, there is one thing that I will never forgive Sam Raimi for, and that's establishing MJ as "just a damsel in distress" in the pop cultural collective consciousness. Because of that, most incarnations of the character that were written ever since have had this weird obession with "fixing her", which includes the 2018 video game. And they have always been terrible.
    The thing is, as any long time fan of the comic book character will tell you, MJ is as far from a damsel in distress as you can get with a non-powered human who's not a cop or a soldier. That's not to say she's never kidnapped or in danger, but you'd be shocked to see how rarely it happens*. And even when it happens, she never stays put. There are even times when she ends up saving herself, or even times when she ends up saving Spidey. And I'm not talking about recent stories, I'm talking about stories that go all the way back to the frigging 70s.
    But unfortunately, cinema has a far more powerful grip on the culture than comic books have, thus people can't shake the image that Sam Raimi popularized.
    * Well, when she's properly written, instead of being deliberatedly written out of character so the readers start hating her and the writers can make Spidey single again and pair him up with their preferred waifu of the week. Which has been a blight in Spider-Man stories on and off since at least the Clone Saga. And the whole reason why "One More Day" is a thing.

      The other thing to point out is that it wasn’t the cause of the crash of 82, crappy games were. There wasn’t enough solid game releases anymore, especially on the 2600 which had the most marketshare. Once consumers noticed that they stopped buying cartridges and it caused a collapse.

    A "normies aren't powerless" trope should be in all superhero games. I'd say the MJ and Miles sections were jarring because the trope had never existed. No superhero game had ever considered the NORMIE side. Maybe somebody should develop (and HYPE) a Luke Cage game to make "normies aren't powerless" a thing.

      I remember seeing a while ago that someone patched ET so that he only collided with holes on the bottom two lines of his sprite, instead of the entire sprite, and it made the game feel so much better and less arbitrary. I only have hazy memories of playing it once as a kid, I had a 5200, so I can't say much, but I remember having no idea what I was doing or what was happening, and constantly falling into holes and having a lot of trouble getting back out.
