@@Fourtgru123 smile has better jump scares than barbarian. I was actually impressed with how interesting they made the plot cuz it seems so whack. Barbarians a better movie, smile is scarier
I think all jump scares are cheap. The only difference being how and when they’re used if you don’t see them coming. If you jump, you jump. If you do, they accomplished their goal and that’s all that matters.
Same!!! I was pissed cause some were saying too many jumpscares but in this one😮💨😮💨😮💨 The WAY the jumpscares come at you are definitely so FRESH!!!! So different. These were cheap ones either and a lot of times the scares were actually the setup to more than just being scared
I was specting less than zero from this movie. It looked exactly like one of those films that the posters is more scary than the movie. The trailer was confirming that though until the scene of the upsidedown head with the contorted neck. But i was still skeptical. Now even if it's now a perfect movie, i want to see it.
Hey Dan ima comment on both channels so u see it hopefully! You single handily held up screen junkies and old fans know that! Your conent and reviews are WAYYY better than what they doing over there
Parker Finn is someone to LOOKOUT for🔥🔥🔥!! I mean this movie had some amazing jumpscares because HOW they came at you. The music score is one of the most chilling soundtracks ever it adds so much into scenes. Sosie Bacon needs AWARDS for this performance because she was literally at the PEAK of her emotions the entire time.
Really odd that you mentioned the cinematographer did Relic. That was the movie I was thinking about watching Smile. I guess because of the Mom issues in both films. Good film but could have cut 10 to 15 minutes. The whole fiancee arc could have been easily trimmed. He just disappeared from the film so his storyline wasn't important. She could just broken up with the cop and was concentrating on her work. That would have trimmed the necessary filler. Music and sound really effect me and saw this after Pearl and nothing could exemplify the differences Pearl.had little to no score and musical ques. The odd musical sounds really made Smile so much more creepy and atmospheric. Really wish the trailer hadn't given away the sister's weird head turn. That was creepy but already given away. Completely agree their were too many jumpacares. I kept waiting for her to drop more glasses. Only other issue was the ending. The visual of the changing to the entity was incredible but I had 2 ways to defeat it. One, just commit suicide alone. I thought that that was what she was going to do. Secondly, when she's gone and sets herself on fire the ex boyfriend could have just embraced her and died in her arms breaking the chain and stopping the deaths. That ending would have so much more meaning. Still, a really good horror flick. I'm 2 for 3. Pearl was a slow dud but Smile and Barbarian were really good. A good fight would be the big momma entity from Smile vs the inbred big baby girl from Barbarian.
I saw it this past weekend. Went solely based on it being a horror movie in October, and some of my favorite marketing ever. Didn't watch the trailers or catch any reviews. I enjoyed it, but agree that it relied way too much on jump scares, surprisingly the sister one got me good. Also felt the story was too similar to some other horror movies.
A lot of people aren't talking about Parker Finns use of sound and background signs of the presence being around before any jump scare or even (in movie) Rose knows its around to torment her. The easiest to pick out would be the whispering from the closet, harder would be the hand around the wall in the kitchen before the patio opens (and moustache is dispatched :( ) SMILE looked great from the trailer and knocked it away. I've seen it in theaters twice and it still scared me. Very very strong opening from Parker Finn.
This movie was terrifying and uncanny. But why why why? Quit it with the unnecessary jump scares. They were not needed. Some of them were okay, but we don't need 15 of them. You are ruining horror. Smile was hilarious and really not that scary at all. During my screening almost everyone in the auditorium including my self was laughing. Especially every time it showed someone smiling it just felt unintentionally hilarious and at the end with the fire, the CGI during that scene. I still had fun with the film overall and it did do a good job of handling the subject of mental health for the most part.
@@DanMurrellMovies Forsure the reaction of the audience around you can easily change the way you perceive a film. I saw Barbarian that same day right before Smile, Pearl right after and the audience was very quiet during the frightening scenes for both movies even jumping a bit. It made for a much more intense experience.
@@danielneil237 It’s interesting how people can see horror so differently. I thought Barbarian was a good movie. But I don’t understand what anyone found scary about it. And I actually laughed a few times. The part where the main character is quickly trying to get Justin Long to understand the situation was very funny. Like “Listen were babies now ok?! We’re babies and she’s mommy so just drink the fuckin milk!” 😆 Justin Long throwing the girl off the platform to save his own ass like a coward. 😆 The dude who said the monster lady would never come into his area only for her to instantly show up and somehow rip him apart with her super human inbred strength. 😆 Smile, on the other hand, is exactly the type of thing that creeps me the fuck out. But I’m much more into bizarre type of horror and strange, disturbing visuals. For example, the doctor walking past a hospital room with a guy sitting there smiling at nothing. The shot of the girl at a party sitting and smiling even though no one else there is smiling. That creeps me out. People looking or acting a way that doesn’t make sense. That type of thing bothers me. To other people… it’s just a person sitting there with a dumb silly look on their face. 🤷♂️
@@mariosargiropoulos1715 it’s interesting because both Smile and Barbarian had ripping in it tho. And of course only the one lady at the party is smiling when no one else is because we know since Rose was cursed only she saw those things. But mani felt bad at those kids looking like “what is wrong with you?” Lol
The jumpscares didn't work for me. They still felt cheap and you could tell from a mile away when they would happen. Cool concept but it ends up feeling like a cheap Junji Ito story. The ending had some cool shots but I feel even the ending they couldn't land. Woulda been much cooler if the MC tried to off herself to destroy the entity only to realize as she's dying that the guy walked in and is staring at her last second. Keeping the cycle going.
It either showed him or had a voiceover from him. There’s a line on the trailer about Rose watching a patient die in front of her the day before that comes from him; I just don’t recall if it shows him speaking it.
First let me say that I enjoyed your review and I'm looking forward to seeing it tomorrow. But my main comment is about Express VPN. And I'd like to know why when I connect to the VPN, I lose my internet connection. And there are sites that won't even let me log in. Now it doesn't happen all the time, but it happens way too often. And It shouldn't happen at all, especially since I'm paying a monthly fee to use it. Any suggestions or comments on that?
I actually really liked this movie. It was kind of boring at first, but the lead made the movie super interesting, and the themes I picked up along the way hit deep personally. The ending was not what I expected, but I will say I'm not disappointed. Definitely one of the better horror movies I've seen. Side note: I'll never understand the disappointment some people have because this movie "owes its success to other films" or whatever. Inspiration like that should hardly be considered a penalty against the movie imho...
The main actress' performance and watching her slowly go insane is what carried it. The second half of the movie was predictable and her ex felt like nothing but a plot device for exposition. The "it was just a dream" tropes felt like cliche cop outs too from what could've been more interesting plot points than what had occured in reality, like when she dreamt that she'd stabbed one of the hospital patients in front of her boss.
If I was Express VPN owner I would sell it at a cheaper monthly price and sell all the info my users log on my servers. And it would be even more valueable because people who use a VPN clearly don't want you to know what they're searching. Fun movie though.
@@SumDumGy After watching it agree it spoiled a few shocks - still worth seeing though. Definite It Follows/70’s horror vibes. A director/writer to watch in the future going by his debut.
@@PCMonkfish I enjoyed the tone, the lead performance and the jump scares. I think the rest of the cast was either wasted or talentless. This movie was not amazing. It was well acted and well crafted, it just wasn't written well. I predicted the ending about 20 minutes into the movie, and nothing that happened was really surprising. The jump scares really took me out of it, and just kept me looking for those. I think that they really needed a script doctor to take this from a kind of by-the-numbers horror movie to something really memorable.
Yah me too. Smile could’ve stuck to its original Mental health plot by itself but instead derived from so many other Horror films that fans are only giving smile the credit for
You really dislike jump scares… I mean we all understand that true horror is more than jump scares but damn , horror movies are gonna have jump scares lol it’s not the end of the world..
@@steadyko7708 Some jumpscares in movies are infamous for being cheap and poorly shot/directed/placed in the movie and I think this has a backlash on the viewer where they subconsciously feel as the movie was treating them (the viewer) as unable to be entertained any other way. This however, is a bias and really should be worked on per person because jump scares when done well (especially in SMILE) are fantastic additions and create a terrifying experience. The second time i saw SMILE the man next to me caught air after the laptop scene. Early 2000's horror was bad at jumpscares but they are legitimate and just as important as any other element to a great horror movie. Lights Out would like a word with jump scare detractors.
Hmm I went to go see it with some friends this weekend and there wasn't really much about it that felt new or different for the horror genre, to me. I watched this last night. While I found the jump scares impactful, I didn’t find the film particularly engaging. Sosie Bacon’s performance was spectacular, which made everyone else dull by comparison, with few exceptions. Jessie T. Usher (her fiancé)...wow, how did he get hired in the first place? I don’t know if I have ever seen someone look so bored and lifeless in a role in my life. For a moment I thought he didn’t actually exist and was all in her mind. Admittedly, I had to look up Kevin Keppy when you mentioned him to find out who you were talking about and the role he played. I’d give this one a 5/10 without a recommendation. i watched it yesterday and for something called smile, with the trailer it had. It wasn't bad. Too bad the trailer gave away some of the best scares. I didnt mind it. 6.5/10
It’s interesting how different audiences react. Mine laughed to ease tension after a big scare, but they seemed very wrapped up in the film otherwise
We’re babies and she’s mommy so just drink the fuckin milk!” 😆
Justin Long throwing the girl off the platform to save his own ass like a coward. 😆 The dude who said the monster lady would never come into his area only for her to instantly show up and somehow rip him apart with her super human inbred strength. 😆
Smile, on the other hand, is exactly the type of thing that creeps me the fuck out.
But mani felt bad at those kids looking like “what is wrong with you?” Lol
a rehash of Fallen ( with Danzel Washington)
That Kevin Keppy character is indeed intense
Another banger over your left shoulder. Love that graphic novel
I didn't get the big hoopla about this film. I thought it was average at best.
Glad they didn’t use the smile filter truth or dare used, the smiles in this movie seem actually done and makes it much more creepy and unsettling
I dont think the trailer showed Kal Penn... and I was delighted to see him. And the scenes he was in...
I'd suggest contacting them. I use it every day and I've never had those issues, but hopefully they can get it worked out with you.
LMAO great intro Dan!
Beat SMILE face by far is Dans opening
If I was Express VPN owner I would sell it at a cheaper monthly price and sell all the info my users log on my servers. And it would be even more valueable because people who use a VPN clearly don't want you to know what they're searching.
Fun movie though.
We really on the alternate universe when Smile doubles the Amsterdam rotten tomatoes score
Um, what?
@@moneysaver204153 There are no surefire anythings in Hollywood.
Just answer me this, is it better than barbarian? :O
It was scarier tbh

Trailer was creepy/scary. Just concerned it gave away too much!
Looking forward to it.
It did.
I also had an issue with the dialogue (I don’t think it’s normal for so many people to say f*ck so often in conversation). 5/10 for me. I was almost bored and saw at least one couple walk out.
THAT INTRO
Almost shat myself throughout most of the movie so yeah 10/10 fucked
It looks like it is way too scary for me even though it does borrow from other movies.
I saw it today, it´s very good and very scary. The music in the movie is awesome
Yah me too. Smile could’ve stuck to its original
Mental health plot by itself but instead derived from so many other Horror films that fans are only giving smile the credit for
What a intro dude 😂
I gotta respectfully disagree with Dan and the general consensus. this movie gave me scare balls, to borrow a phrase
I hate scary movies
There is a big piece of this movie that looks too much like a big piece of Barbarian even though both are really great and elite level for sure
You really dislike jump scares… I mean we all understand that true horror is more than jump scares but damn , horror movies are gonna have jump scares lol it’s not the end of the world..
I don't condemn all jump scares - I admit that I don't like them, but I've always made sure to comment on what works or doesn't work.
Why do horror movie fanatics pretend that jump scares are bad? I'm genuinely curious
@@DanMurrellMovies answer this
@@steadyko7708 Some jumpscares in movies are infamous for being cheap and poorly shot/directed/placed in the movie and I think this has a backlash on the viewer where they subconsciously feel as the movie was treating them (the viewer) as unable to be entertained any other way.

Dan I feel there is a scam going on your Hellraiser review, unless you have genuinely sent out offers of winning stuff for their comments?..
Hmm I went to go see it with some friends this weekend and there wasn't really much about it that felt new or different for the horror genre, to me. It wasn't *bad,* it's just that the reviews were so positive that I was really expecting something a little more unique. It felt very typical of a horror film, and was about what I would have expected from the trailer. Barbarian was much better.
The intro ROFLMAO
This was a complete Ring ripoff, they even used the same shots, like the face of the dead guy 'I saw her face' that line sound familiar?
I saw a couple walks out about halfway through. I guess they were more underwhelmed than I was.
Everyone saying this a good movie except it’s Dooggggg shiiiitttttt
The trailers for this movie have been laughably terrible, so I don’t have high hopes.
That's what's so good actually because low expectations made this a very very surprisingly good watch
That’s the best way to go into the film
😂😂👌🏽 intro nice movie for long time it like truth , or dare movie
Looks like aphex twin shit lol
Smile was straight trash. The MC was bland and had no personality. I knew the ending a mile away. And I liked that she lost to the boogeyman 🤣🤣
Parker Finn is the whitest name ever!!
This movie sucks.
Not scary.
😆😅🤣
No shade I felt like I was watching Karen breaking down the whole movie. Boring
