200%, I felt like the microphone was inside Dennis Quaid's mouth during the shrimp scene. But yeah the sound design through the whole movie is what made me wince many many times
It’s about self hatred. Thats why they hate each other. Have watched it several times and it has so many layers. Great commentary. Heartbreaking. Glad you watched it.
They’re not each other. They are one. I find it very interesting that there is zero communication when both versions are alive at the same time. It reflect how much out of contact she is with herself. 😢
We forget how absuive self abuse is.. Its easy to tell ourselves 'Im not hurting anyone else. I can do whatever I want with myself who cares'. But self hatred and self destruction is just as evil and just as abusive. People shouldn't ever forget that. But I find myself making the same mistake.
2 sides of the same coin. the obsession of your own youth and beauty you once had before. but on the other side is also the self hatred of what you became as you grew older. The old man mirrors this very well too. also both the old and younger self are obsessed with that beauty too. Older self trying to cling on it to by tolerating giving their life span to allow the younger self to live with vanity. While younger self also clings onto that youth and beauty by literally stealing it from the old self. Both are also so wreckless with this obsession.
Demi Moore was insanely brave to do this and trust her visionary director to pull it off so well. This performance was so vulnerable and so over the edge and Demi at 60 is more gorgeous and present in herself than many people are at 30. So many props to her and Qualley and Coralie Fargeat and I've got fingers crossed this movie isn't overlooked for Oscar nominations AT MINIMUM for Moore and effects/editing/sound/direction. I'm so glad to see a generation of female directors emerging and putting their mark on horror.
6:43 - one thing I noticed is how she looks "younger" until she steps into that bathroom stall and after hearing Harvey she steps out of the stall obviously sad but on top of that she looks older, like his comments stripped her of her confidence instantly
I thought I was the only one to notice that. So maybe it was intentional? 🤔 Btw the only way they could actually make Elizabeth (Demi) “old” & “unattractive” was to literally put that hideous makeup on her 😭 she’s fab

Demi Moore is much more confident now, but in her past she went through being abused, addiction, eating disorders and self destruction. She said she basically had to confront herself for this role. In real life, looks like she was finally able to pick herself up, which is very admirable .
I saw her interview in Hot Ones and she finally feels so confident and happy with herself. It's so inspiring to any woman who still hasn't found that confidence.

@scottneil1187 You're not supposed to think about it too hard, honestly. If anything, it can be seen as her psyche actually snapping in two, but otherwise the director is French, so I'm sure it's not meant to make logical sense so much as emotional sense.

Don't forget the academy also snubbed Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse) too, not even a nomination simply because they look down on Horror, there's no excuse
I totally agreed with Roxy about the real horror of the film. The body-horror scenes were just the 2nd scariest part of the film. The sadness of the film is way more scarier. Because many people would feel exactly like Elizabeth from the inside.

Their reaction to the scene of her changing and not going to the Date at Luigi's here is so perfect. That scene made me so sad and furious at the same time.
The way I cried when the older gentleman man told her that sometimes he wonders if he is even worth existing/taking space. It has so many sad layers to this, and I felt it acutely.

Compliments are often qualified and it’s an odd space to occupy. I welcome aging but the unknown is frightening given that I am already dealing with ailments that usually occur as you become older. Great reaction!
So interesting about them being 1. When we are younger we smoke, we drink, we stay up late, things that take time of our older self’s and we do it without thinking of ourself in the future
Demi Moore WON a Golden Globe for this movie!! AND it was her FIRST award EVER in her career! Huge congrats to her performance and everyone else who worked on this movie!!
She so fricken deserved it!! And her acceptance speech actually had me tearing up cause u could just feel her heart! She had to come so face to face w her own demons to give such a visceral performance!! An absolute genuine commentary on Hollywood & she basically shoved it in the face of all the a holes that have ever abused her!! Yes it was a win for horror, but damn was it a win for a long overlooked amazing actress!!❤💞❤️
@@jimjimjimmy7793 it’s not a body horror, so don’t go in expecting that. BUT it’s a solid revenge flick and if you liked all the gross practical effects and prosthetics in The Substance, you will enjoy Revenge
My theory on the split consciousness after the failed termination is that the termination injection severs the bridge between the conscious bodies THEN terminates the actual body. But because she didn’t inject all the way, just the connection between Sue & Elisabeth was severed. Then by using the activator on the severed consciousness, it sort of “gave birth” to Sue as her own fully separated self. Also having them start to view each other as separate people due to insecurities/vanity so early didn’t help either.
My theory was that the termination injection splits the bodies into 2 separate people and then terminated the matrix body so that the more “perfect” one can live on, leading back to that main idea of “Don’t you want to be younger, prettier, better?”
I describe this to ppl as The Thing/The Fly meets Death Becomes Her. It’s this reminder that it’s the responsibility of your younger self to take care of your older self. Coralie Fargeat feature film Revenge is great as well. The way a woman handles the r*pe revenge genre is so thoughtful.
45:50 you are 100% correct the process she did really disturbed me to because we have been their before well at least myself , that mirror scene and seeing her frustration with herself so heartbreaking
Watched this with my mother in theaters when it first premiered. We had to cover our ears on the loud scenes, we suffered in the hardcore scenes, we ended up loving it. My favorite film of the year.
You can see how men are visual when Greg’s first comment right after the movie end that he find it “Disgusting” due to the gore scene while the girl’s comment was “it was heartbreaking”. Which is the meaning of the movie and why the huge population of female as of the moment strives to have an immortal young look.
everyone understands things and experiences attraction as well in a primarily visual manner at first and then it deepens over time as you get to know the movie or person or whatever it is that you initially knew visually. women do the same thing. men would be more emotional if they felt like they could be without being ridiculed. human beings make their first judgements based on appearance, not just one gender.
this movie did a great job at creating a modern ambient mixed with 70's - 80's aesthetics. The monster design looks straight up from an 80's horror movie. it's atemporal and i love that
They are actually one, the vid explained that its her but another version of herself. It feels like her clone like parts of her but better looking, its just different body but parts of the mind are connected. Remember Elisabeth also recognizes the guy with the motorcycle, also Sue knows how to use the substance correctly because its also Elisabeth and they are also both desperate for something they wanted. We did see Sue as an evil girl and maybe that's also Elisabeth when she is young, we never see her younger attitude tho. Also a lot of ppl missed in the movie is the only reason Monstroelisasue died because she never take the stabilizer in Sue's body 😂
Elizabeth recognised the motorcycle guy out on the street because she saw his helmet in the apartment and made the connection, and Sue knew how to use the substance because she has all of Elizabeths memories up to the point of being born from the substance. They do not share consciousness after splitting. They do have a subconscious link though.
@@MarkEvans-xw5ix those things don't lead to one conclusion. Tell Demi Moore that there is no 1 consciousness :D You know that she said on Jimmy Fallon's that there is one consciousness?
@@MarkEvans-xw5ixand tell me what are her motives to continue the experience even when she looks worse than Frankenstein? Is she masoc**itic according to your assumption?
When Greg asked if there really were workout classes like ones "Sue" was teaching, it reminded me of something. Back in the early 80s, there actually was a tv show called "The 20 Minute Workout" and women wore skimpy leotards and would do thrusting type exercises just like that. You can still find them on TH-cam I believe.
just because a woman is the protagonist doesnt mean it isnt applicable to self hatred and body shaming for either gender. how about how we treat ourselves? equality, right?
@@Jonny-wt3rgyou’re giving away the game. “Young” and “beautiful” are both qualifiers you’re giving to said women. Implying that is their value. That one of the main points of the movie, that society treats women differently based on age and beauty.
All the performances were fantastic in this film. However, can we give a shout-out to the "Phone Guy" he was absolutely hilarious. The way he answered the phone and his voice. Brilliant.
Gregs reaction to the toothpulling scene is tooo relatable for me, I used to dream about my teeth falling out or being loose too many times. The nail scene was also triggering asf for me, i almost never have physical reactions to body horror since its one of my fave horror genres but this movie had me full body cringing quite a few times 😭😭 the substance is 100% my favorite movie of the year
51:30 oh, my god. you nailed it, i didn't think of it like that. there are many, many details in the cinematography of this movie that makes it amazingly good. like the details of when elisabeth is off she has her eyes open like its a traumatic experience, but when sue is off she has her eyes closed like sleeping peacefully. and there are many many details that make this movie really good
The segment of Demi Moore agonising over her appearance every single time was genuinely so painful, uncomfortable and heartbreaking. It’s so viscerally emotionally painful with such a masterfully subtle performance with the context of the story. The gut wrenching pain of just wanting her to be HAPPY, that there is a man out there who she can befriend or romance who just loves her as she is. It’s a nightmarish and painfully real scenario thrown at the audience after so many bizarre, surreal and sensory sequences. And we go right back to it - but for a horrible, awful, tragic window, Elizabeth Sparkle could have found happiness with a kind person who loved her.
I love this movie! The incredible thing is that Demi Moore is actually 61 in real life & playing 50 in the film! She’s stunning. I’m her same age, so I basically have followed her entire career. I’m glad you guys enjoyed the movie!
Yeah like Greg said we don't get many "elevated" horror movies that go so hard with the horror aspect. Everyone involved with this movie delivered and deserve all the praise. Loved the reaction!
this movie is what "everything everywhere all at once" was 2 years ago, the whole time I was watching I kept thinking "I have NEVER seen something like this before" and Demi Moore is incredible
The way Greg squirmed and moved in the chair and Roxy was just tense af is so damn relatable, I left this movie with neck and shoulder pain that lasted a couple days I was so tense 😂 I also spent the whole drive home actively trying not to puke, so suffice to say it was an effective movie for me
My only complaint about this film [so far] is that I've only been able to find a copy to purchase on digital. I really want to own a physical copy of this movie because that's how good it was. I always want to be able to go back and rewatch it. So many layers, so much context, just a purely amazing experience. And if you haven't seen it already, please watch "Revenge" which was also directed by Coralie Fargeat. -- And had I not known they had to make prosthetics for Margaret Qualley to give her the "perfect" body, I'd have never guessed.
Dennis Quaid eating the food in the beginning reminds me of requiem for a dream where that creep is eating the steak 🤢 just a very uncomfortable moment
20:50 she does'nt look like this, margareth explained in interviews that she wore prostetics for this movie, that theres no way a woman looks like that, and that is the critcism that this movie makes.
@HABO2210 ok, first of all, never call breasts "knockers" again. Sue literally looks like a barbie doll, the prosthetics are to make her literally "perfect", no woman is "perfect", they're all beautiful but the idea that this concept of "perfect, youthful, woman" is a false reality. That's what the main comment was trying to say and you missed it, considering all you brought up about these women were their bodies, your mind was somewhere else and you're part of the problem.
I love the film and the Easter eggs in it. The yellow coat represents the matrix. Demi wears it all the time and Sue is wearing it in the beginning. After some time she starts to distance herself from Demi and starts to wear more colours. (hope it makes sense, English isn’t my first language )
Demi Moore really deserves all the awards for this role. Please react to Revenge (2017) it's a film from the same director of this film and it's really good and so underrated🙏
It's incredibly telling that when talking about their first thoughts on the movie, the male reactor says it's 'disgusting' and the female one said 'heartbreaking'. It's nothing against Greg but it just goes to show how different men and women experienced this film.
The "YOU ARE ONE" title card while Sue is killing Elisabeth is the moment Elisabeth dies, and the split consciousness merges into Sue. Yes, it was her killing her older self. They were never ever two people or two minds. They were always one. This moment was the only time it came close to being two people. But it's not that they're split people. They're one person, one consciousness that is split between two bodies. Could make the argument that such a state contributed to Sue losing it like she did. Only realizing what she had done once her consciousness reunited.
There are so many people talking about this movie. To me the real horrors is…Will there by any change at all? Will any women be more accepting of themselves as they age? Will any men? Or society in general? Or Hollywood? I seriously doubt it.
I didn’t see that before but now I can’t unsee it. I just had the Harvey Weinstein thought, and then him holding the shrimp reminded me of Olivia Munn’s Brett Ratner story. Quaid really even looks like Vince McMahon a bit
Loved this! Between watching this, then Terrifier 3 & Smile 2 i feel like ive been fed so good!!! Great separate stuff all in their own ways, but this year has been a banger for horror & im so here for it!! Fun reaction yall!!❤💞❤️
Great commentary on this one! Especially Roxy's final thoughts!😉👌So much going on with this film: fear of aging, pursuit of perfection, business of Hollywood, and even addiction issues. Would LOVE to see this film recognized during awards season. Solid film.

La mayor cantidad de personas lo deseamos, todos queremos el Oscar para Demi y sería indiscutible.
So interesting about them being 1. When we are younger we smoke, we drink, we stay up late, things that take time of our older self’s and we do it without thinking of ourself in the future
Great point!
I hated how vague the instructions are for the injections/transfers/food and yet she knew exactly how to use them.
I know! I am so sure I would have failed at the initial transition. Boom, end of movie. Lol!
Yes it was a win for horror, but damn was it a win for a long overlooked amazing actress!!❤💞❤️
the director coralie fargeat's first film 'Revenge' is 100% worth checking out as well.
So good!!
Loved that one.
I’m gonna 2nd Revenge. It’s EXCELLENT
So I’m gonna watch it is it as crazy as this?
I absolutely love this analogy & also recommend Revenge!!!❤💞❤️
45:50 you are 100% correct the process she did really disturbed me to because we have been their before well at least myself , that mirror scene and seeing her frustration with herself so heartbreaking
Ive loved the 100s of comments spamming about watching this. Its amazing and glad that a pressure campaign worked. Let the trauma and feels begin!
You act as if they had any impact at all. They watch a ton of new movies.

Choice of words. Pressuring someone into something isn't a good thing. Persuasion is fine. Ew lol
@@moxiemaxie3543 wrong situation
Watched this with my mother in theaters when it first premiered. We had to cover our ears on the loud scenes, we suffered in the hardcore scenes, we ended up loving it. My favorite film of the year.
Poor Fred. He probably still waiting for Liz
If only Elisabeth knows that she's enough, he could've been the validation and appreciation that she longs for.
the egg duplicating into a more perfectly round, deeper coloured, clearly "fresher" egg, is such a mindblowing detail
You can see how men are visual when Greg’s first comment right after the movie end that he find it “Disgusting” due to the gore scene while the girl’s comment was “it was heartbreaking”. Which is the meaning of the movie and why the huge population of female as of the moment strives to have an immortal young look.
fair point... it was also pretty gross with a lot of the visual body horror
everyone understands things and experiences attraction as well in a primarily visual manner at first and then it deepens over time as you get to know the movie or person or whatever it is that you initially knew visually. women do the same thing. men would be more emotional if they felt like they could be without being ridiculed. human beings make their first judgements based on appearance, not just one gender.
this movie did a great job at creating a modern ambient mixed with 70's - 80's aesthetics.
Greg and Roxy were the best line up choice to force to watch this film lmao
That kinda goes back to why they don’t give each other a bed it’s because they don’t really care about each other because she didn’t love on herself
Let's not forget this film won Best Screenplay at Cannes.
I remember that show. Butt shots and provocative bending, but slower.😂
For obvious reasons, Blind Wave need to watch this. With Aaron's eyes clamped open Clockwork Orange style
38:33 you guys being grossed out at the finger and I'm laughing bc I know how bad it gets lol
"The most horrifying part of this movie is how we treat women." ding ding ding
I would say "The mot horrifying part of this movie is how women treat themselves"
just because a woman is the protagonist doesnt mean it isnt applicable to self hatred and body shaming for either gender. how about how we treat ourselves? equality, right?
Young beautiful women are treated like goddesses
@@Jonny-wt3rgyou’re giving away the game. “Young” and “beautiful” are both qualifiers you’re giving to said women. Implying that is their value. That one of the main points of the movie, that society treats women differently based on age and beauty.
All the performances were fantastic in this film. However, can we give a shout-out to the "Phone Guy" he was absolutely hilarious. The way he answered the phone and his voice. Brilliant.
Gregs reaction to the toothpulling scene is tooo relatable for me, I used to dream about my teeth falling out or being loose too many times. The nail scene was also triggering asf for me, i almost never have physical reactions to body horror since its one of my fave horror genres but this movie had me full body cringing quite a few times 😭😭 the substance is 100% my favorite movie of the year
Oh I’ve had that nightmare sooo many times it was concerning. Sometimes they would come off like a string. 😮
51:30 oh, my god. you nailed it, i didn't think of it like that.
there are many, many details in the cinematography of this movie that makes it amazingly good. like the details of when elisabeth is off she has her eyes open like its a traumatic experience, but when sue is off she has her eyes closed like sleeping peacefully. and there are many many details that make this movie really good
Oh my God I cannot wait to see Roxy clutching at Greg’s arm, cross legged in her chair, yelling “GREG! GREG! GREG! GREG!!!”
Lmao am I that predictable
@@roxystriar I’m actually surprised it was more “No NO NO no no No ahhhhhhh” with claw hands in front of your face 😅
I’ve been eagerly awaiting this reaction.
I just know the receptionist guy rolled his eyes everytime he saw his phone and it said "503 CALLING..." 😂
Tara and Roxy should check out “Revenge” by the same director who created this
I didn't know it's the same director but that makes so much sense. Very distinct style
And Demi Moore is 62!!!!! She looks incredible!
I love this movie! The incredible thing is that Demi Moore is actually 61 in real life & playing 50 in the film! She’s stunning. I’m her same age, so I basically have followed her entire career. I’m glad you guys enjoyed the movie!
I am so glad this movie has gotten the recognition it has gotten. This is one of the best movies of 2024 so far. Glad you guys enjoyed it.
Yeah like Greg said we don't get many "elevated" horror movies that go so hard with the horror aspect. Everyone involved with this movie delivered and deserve all the praise. Loved the reaction!
this movie is what "everything everywhere all at once" was 2 years ago, the whole time I was watching I kept thinking "I have NEVER seen something like this before"
and Demi Moore is incredible
You better RESPECT the balance Greg :)
Demi is 62 years old and has aged so well!
omg, I've been waiting for this from you guys
I honestly believe that The Substance is this generations definitive body horror movie
man i can’t believe you guys are just watching this , easily my favorite of the year by FARRRRRR
25:14 the writer/director said the reason she chose the name Sue is because it forces Margaret’s lips to pucker into a kissy face when she says it
Margaret was incredible but something about Demi Moore makes me feel things, she is a goddess
Demi es mejor que la joven en todo sentido.
The difference between what a man sees and what a woman sees is so glaringly obvious in this reaction.
Right? I lowkey thought his reactions were just as horrifying as the movie
I wish Elizabeth wrote Sue notes like “hey… please don’t fuck this up for us.” 😂
12/10 film. Went in blind and it caught me off guard like "Under the Skin" did a little over a decade ago...
The fact Quaids character is named Harvey is not an accident. He plays Weinstein too well lol
Absolutely one of the best movies in the last 10 years IMO. The last 20 mins made it an instant cult classic.
The way Greg squirmed and moved in the chair and Roxy was just tense af is so damn relatable, I left this movie with neck and shoulder pain that lasted a couple days I was so tense 😂 I also spent the whole drive home actively trying not to puke, so suffice to say it was an effective movie for me
The movie literally left me shaking. I’ve never had a visceral reaction to a movie like this before.
Death Becomes Her is a great companion piece to The Substance imo. would be a great classic movie reaction !!!
I really admire the movie, directing and acting. I had same reaction as Roxy and found it really heartbreaking.
It will come.. and by the hype of this film it will probably be sooner than later
Mubi is releasing it on Blu-ray in January
Dennis Quaid eating the food in the beginning reminds me of requiem for a dream where that creep is eating the steak 🤢 just a very uncomfortable moment
And she stabs him in the hand with her fork in her imagination. Ugh I wish she really had.
Probably already mentioned, but Ray Liotta was originally cast as Quaid's character, only to die right before he was due to beginning filming.
Yeah, the poor bugger's last film was Cocaine Bear. Ugh...
I am so happy that you two chose to watch this movie together.
It’s incredible in every freaking way.
20:50 she does'nt look like this, margareth explained in interviews that she wore prostetics for this movie, that theres no way a woman looks like that, and that is the critcism that this movie makes.
Alexandra Daddario, Sydney Sweeney.
@@HABO2210 neither of these women look like Sue
@face4666 perfect tits, ass, hourglass figure, young face, mesmerizing eyes. What the hell they don't have?
@face4666 perfect behind, knockers, hourglass figure, youthful face, mesmerizing eyes. Tf they missing?
@HABO2210 ok, first of all, never call breasts "knockers" again. Sue literally looks like a barbie doll, the prosthetics are to make her literally "perfect", no woman is "perfect", they're all beautiful but the idea that this concept of "perfect, youthful, woman" is a false reality. That's what the main comment was trying to say and you missed it, considering all you brought up about these women were their bodies, your mind was somewhere else and you're part of the problem.
17:19 as someone who can handle gore but hates needles the fact that we see SO MANY shots of ppl using needles really made me squeamish 😂
Love how accurate Roxy’s spoilers are 😂😂 she is always tuned into what’s going on
I love the film and the Easter eggs in it.
Totalmente de acuerdo.
That is a scary thought.
Dennis Quaid was giving me Vince McMahon vibes in this.
Solid film.
This film is constant 😅 emotion
THE SUBSTANCE written and directed by Coralie Fargeat. She also made her first film REVENGE (2017).
Margaret is currently 30 years old ❤
This movie like creates it's own time period and aesthetic and I love it! Also, the score.... PU$$Y!!
I mean, this movie exists in a world where a woman like Elisabeth Sparkle lives in the same building as a guy like Oliver...
❤Love to you guys from Canada❤
