I have years of experience with pumps etc. What you need to do is look at your pump and see how many feet of head pressure it will pump. Then you need to take into consideration roughly the elevation from the point you are pumping from to the highest point you are pumping too. That is the head pressure you need a pump to overcome so you can size a pump accordingly. I hope that helps.

This is exactly the issue, too much head feet for the pump. When you are going up and over, the head ft is reduced by the drop to the house.

Katie you are an amazing woman! so ready to take on any task, learn new things, and work very hard. You are obviously a lover of our animal friends. You are a rare find to be willing to help build a homestead on raw, undeveloped land, and at the same time be supportive of your man. Greg, I am sure you realize how fortunate you are to have this hard working and beautiful woman in your life. Happy New Year to you both and may 2024 brig you prosperity, satisfaction.\and a steady,-year round water source.

Happy New Year! Having lived with a sketchy water supply for almost 10 years, digging a well is worth every penny. A reliable, safe water source makes a huge difference in the quality of your lives. The amount of time and stress you save is astronomical. Thanks for explaining. It must be so frustrating.

Reengineered the system and rethink the system. Increase storage and add another pump halfway to lighten the load to the one at the bottom. Have to have water. What you have works so spend money to beef up your system.

Concerning your truck it’s generally an easy fix. Had shifting is generally the shift cable itself, it runs under the carpet and rusts out/freezes up there. It’s generally not that expensive as long as you didn’t break off the shifter lever on the Coulm cable side. Also if need be climb under the truck on the side of the trans mission you can pop off the shift cable and shift it by hand in a pinch just count clicks. It will start in both park and neutral. Hope it helps.

My old Silverado hauled 3-4 of those tanks on our 16ft trailer. We usually hauled 3 so it wasn't so much on the truck every time. We were estimated just under 7,000 lbs. I know a lot of people question why we do things the way we do, that's ok. If it works for you, do it that way. A well is so expensive now to install. When I was a kid we couldn't drink the city water. We had to truck in water from a natural spring that came out of the side of the mountain. I have been told that location is now blocked off from the public to do snakes and other risks. I think you guys do amazing and have survived fine. Everyone is healthy and that's what matters. I am sure you all will explore many more options before it is said and done and find what is best. Thanks for another great clip of your life and journey.

@@ThisOffGridLife I understand that. We moved from having a 2 acre place with pasture and a well to being on county water now. The 10 acres we had didn't have a natural water source outside of rain. It was one of those good with the bad. But it's taking some getting used to not having well water. I can't imagine going from natural spring water. I don't remember much as a child but the water was clear and cold. As a child the city water came out of the faucet green and stank soo bad. I remember fighting to take a bath. It was horrible lol. Our off grid adventure didn't last mainly due to the gas generators costing soo much to keep going. Wasn't as many options as there are now. We passed on river front due to how young our children were or that would have been our choice. Anyway, I love watching your channel. Thank you. I hope you have a wonderful year. Can't wait to be a part of it!

If you have a road/track to a point lower than your water source then take the old truck with a tote and park it there permanently to fill.
When you need to fill the big tank at the house, go there and bring the water back to the house and then take the truck back again.
All that the truck will need is 1st and reverse and a motor that starts well and runs reasonably.
Or make a water pump using the truck motor and install it (and maybe a 5000 liter tank) at the source and run 38mm pipe to the house.
I'm sure that you guys will think of something...
    You always do...

You should check out Red Poppy Ranch’s water system he put in 4-5 years ago. It’s similar to what you guys could use. Off grid, solar power, and the water is from a spring. He developed a spring cistern with a solar pump that pumps the water to a large above ground storage cistern on the hill above his house which gravity feeds his house. He has no need for a pump to pressurize his house.

My mountain house outside Asheville, NC was at 3660 feet above mean sea level and about 1500 feet from the adjacent valley floor. My well was drilled to 1035 feet and flowed at 1 gpm. We hydro fracked and achieved 3 gpm.......2 years later the flow had increased to 5 gpm - very sufficient. The mountain my house was built on was 100% solid rock. You CAN find water by drilling.....

There is another way to pump water using a syphon effect. You get two or three 50 gallon barrels and you connect them together and you put very good shut off valves one on the up side of the pipe and one on the down side of the pipe next to the barrels. You run your pipe from the spring to 40 feet above your tank and then run the pipe down to your tank. First you fill all three tanks up with water. Then you turn both valves on at the same time. The water running downhill from the tanks creates a syphon on the uphill side and keeps the barrels full. then you turn both valves off at the same time keeping the barrels full.

I'm an old male. Guys can live 'dirtier' than women. This is a basic hygiene issue and women take much better pride in their appearance. When we were first married I told the wife, "That new tractor will pay for that couch! The couch won't pay for a new tractor. That is true but later on in life she said, "Screw your tractor, I'm getting _____. (Whatever) Now her saying that is damn true too! Greg, I saw you promise that trench!! Years ago Dad got Mom a new engraved saddle (with her name) for x-mas. She was so impressed that she got him a sewing machine for Father's day. 🙂

Couple videos ago you were told you cant plow the road which you were getting your water from with the truck. Untill you get it figured out why not just do what you have been doing the last couple years. You have no snow on that road so just do what you have been doing until snow levels stop you from getting water that way.
Use your gas powerd pump to pump it up that hill when the time comes. Reducers on the outlet connected to hose then to tote on top of hill.
    Just a idea.

DUDE! All you need is that creek. Just build a small shed ($400) down by the creek. Put a 4000 Watt gasoline generator ($400) in the shed. Fire up the genny each time you need to pump the water up - no fail system! New 1/2 HP Transfer pump ($100) will pump 250' uphill no problem - takes 30 minutes to fill the 275 gallon tote. Ask me how I know - 2 years and going strong!

From Google: To push water uphill it will require pressure and if water goes downhill then you will gain pressure. An easy calculation to know is that for every 10 feet of rise you lose -4.33 psi. For every 10 feet of fall in elevation, you will gain +4.33 psi.

Pump the water to a tank that is higher than your cistern. From the tank to the cistern with a siphon. A pump that starts the siphon.
Freezing from the tank to the cistern would be empty when not running. Once running, it would not freeze.
The trickle ta k at the spring would be empty until the front value turned on.
Once turned off, the line would empty back to the lower tank. So freezing would not be an issue except at the trickle tank and pump

Greg & Katie think about this . A builder built 200000 homes in a new subdivision in Arizona and he was then told by the Scottsdale Water department that water was being shutoff to his new development of homes. Shortly after this news came we heard news that Arizona was selling its water to Saudi Arabia and that caused a land phisher to open up in the desert and now Arizona is ruined by the state government selling America to the highest bidder before they are gone. The same water deal was in Michigan with CCP China getting its water from Michigan mountain spring water Nestle Company in Switzerland. Bought Ice mountain in Starwood Michigan where I vacation and the Lake Michigan was lower than ever before the water was being stolen and sold to CCP China.

Happy New Year.🍰🎉🎁🎵🎸 When one door closes. 2 other doors open :-) keep cars and tractors and other tools please put under the shed. rain snow corrosion and rust
shortens life. Correct calculation pump size X meters X + height. A thicker pipe will make your pump work less...if possible install a relatively small and aesthetic insulated water tank above the height of your house. That way gravity will help and you don't need to consume electricity, which is lacking in general. A water tank under the house so it will be easier to pump and it won't freeze... there are indeed a lot of trees around and less sun. It is advisable to take down some trees so that sun will enter your area and sun for solar panels

The only thing that you might do is build a pond upslope, not for drinking water, but for the garden etc.
Unfortunately that does mean making the downslope side able to hold the weight and volume of water.
    3 m. X 2 m. Is small but holds roughly 500 l. of water.
I know someone did that in the Jordanian desert after putting in a very simple water collection system. That's a land with nothing but rock and dust. So it can be done, just needs planning and a liner that will remain stable over winter.

Hi guys sutdave1 is spot on look at the pump head pressure rating you may need to put another pump and tank half the elevation up to the truck. Pick up an ac/dc clamp on meter and check how much the pump is drawing the load will go down if you cut the head pressure the volume will also increase. I know it is twice the equipment and more cost but much more efficient.

Sounds like you better save up to buy a ditching machine to go deep under the frost line. You would have to spend all your time hand digging a ditch all that way to bury the pipe. Katie was talking about all the roots as she was walking to the truck pulling the pipe and that will be a huge problem for you to overcome. Buy a ditcher, dig the line in and then sell the machine. I know that sounds easy for me to say but I know how hard it is to rent equipment that may break down and hold you up and be a headache.
In any case I hope you are able to get it done in the spring even if it means doing less on your beautiful house.
Take care and Happy New Year,

Someone once told me to "Work smarter, not harder." Not sure exactly what they had in mind, but I think it had something to do with reevaluating the work flow, and designing a more efficient approach to solve the problem. Incremental improvements help, but ultimately you might want to "rethink" the whole design, and try another approach.

As a kid on our farm (70 years ago) we only had rainwater from the house roof as our main water supply, for all household needs. We had a bore, but it was very brackish and although great for the stock, it was no use on gardens, or for our drinking and cooking. Of course management of the use was very important, with one bath a week (shared of course), weekly laundry washing using water boiled in a "copper", being the main things that people today wouldn't even consider, but you did what you had to.
Remember that a pump will typically draw 3 x the power on start, so your power station may not have suitable power capacity to handle that pump.

Hydrology reports for your area ? Have you checked ? You need pumping stations with overflow back to the start . IBC totes at intervals of 50 to 100 feet . No hose drag ing required. Thanks

Forks on the tractor should make hauling water not an issue unless the tractor won't handle the weight of the tote.

The answer your question about the weight of a IBC tote's 275 gallons of water is 2700 pounds . Each gallon weighs 10 lbs. The answer in U.S. gallons is 2282 lbs . The difference is because the Imperial gallon in Canada has 4.55 litres , and the U.S. gallon has 3.8 litres .

RV style pressure pumps have a regulator that limits output pressure to around 30 psi, which limits the height (head) that it can overcome. The good ones have adjustment screws that you can set the max cutoff pressure. If you can increase it to like 45 psi, it should be able to overcome all but a full hose kink. Even though they are rated for only 8-9 amps at 12vdc, they can draw up to 15 amps or more when starting up or at full pressure, which will likely trip any 10 amp breaker. Hope that helps.

set up a portable tank mid way on the water line. get another pump and power station so u pump less pressure to tank 1 then pump from tank 1 to the truck. less water in line les weight less pressure a bit more work

Good evening and happy new year.. I don’t know if you have considered what is going to be like to get water when you’re older and to be completely honest with you if you are smart, you will try your best to figure out A way to drill a well because when you get older, I’m sure you’re not going to want to be dealing with getting water down on the side of the mountain. It just doesn’t seem plausible or even sensible so you might want to take that into deeper consideration before it gets too late. Be sensible my friends..☝️ At any rate, all the best in 2024
P.S.Don’t forget if one of you gets sick or gets hurt who is going to run and get the water Because basically it takes two of you to do the job think about it!? I think it would be necessary for you both to think a little bit more in the future for your own good.☝️

You where saying that catching rain water is not viable because you don’t get any rain in the summer,If you had large storage Tanks the water that flows out of the spring must come from rain at sometime of the year one would assume or is it from the melting snow? And not have the volume to hook up a pump to catch as much as possible during the best water flow period.I’m on a farm in Australia so I’m ignorant to the fact of knowing your weather pattern but I enjoy your determination to solve every problem as we share the same predicament sometimes.

I have a similar situation. I have a 300 gallon tank at the source. The water trikles in 24/7. Inside the tank i have a jet pump 1 1/2 hp. This pump brings the water up aprox 500 ft and 1/2 mile away to a 2000 gal tank.. works very well but it requires 240 volts.

I live at 5600 Ft in an area of the South Dakota Black Hills that are considered Semi Arid. We drilled our well almost 9 years ago. It's 340 deep and when drilled produced 3 gpm. Last spring the well went dry. It slowly recovered but we spiked the well casing with400 gallons from town. not long after we had it Fracked and it was producing 4.5 GPM. Today I ran water after showering while my wife was washing clothes. When I turned on the faucet in the sink there were fines that are most likely from the well, indicating that it's drawing from the bottom.

To get the water to the cistern you may need to have 2 separate pumps to allow a steady flow. When you bury the line you may have to still use the 2 pumps to reduce the wood on the pump at the spring box. To keep from running the pumps use a float switch in the spring and one at the cistern it will require both switches to be closed. If there is not enough water in the spring nothing will run and burn out and if the cistern is full both pumps will not run. That could save you the expense of
      Buying pumps or ruining batteries.
      Good luck on this endeavor.
